Verizon Approves Jelly Bean Update for Galaxy S3, Likely Available in the Coming Days

Moments ago, Verizon posted up support documents for the Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) update of the Samsung Galaxy S3. I’d call that “official.” We had heard from sources that the final build had been approved and that December 14 was looking like the targeted release date, something that now appears to be spot on.

The update includes all of the Jelly Bean features you’d expect, like Google Now (even though they label it above as “Plus”), better notifications, smarter widgets, and Project Butter. Beyond Jelly Bean, Verizon also included support for Isis Mobile Wallet (still only available in test markets), turned the phone into a global roaming beast, and fixed a variety of bugs.

The update appears to be 400MB in size. The build number is VRBLK3, which leaked last week.

Update:  We aren’t sure why, but Verizon just changed the support docs back to a previous update. We’ll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Update 2:  The new Jelly Bean docs are back. They updated the top doc to say “Google Now” instead of “Google Plus.” They also removed the “Starter Mode” mention from document two.

    is this real life?!

    • bogy25

I haven’t been happy with it on my MAXX HD so don’t be too excited..I think it is slower now – lags never did before and I have to restart occasionally to get some apps to work properly – never had to do this with ICS.

    • PhoenixPath

      Don’t let them fool you…it’s still Memorex. (I think I just dated myself…and I didn’t even pay)

  • John Doe III

Its about time…. now we don’t have to hear all the crying….. until the RAZR HD gets KLP at the beginning of Feb :-)

  • possomcrast1

Damn I got excited when I saw the stock notification bar (which I like a lot better)…then I saw the on-screen keys.

  • EvanTheGamer

Can you say “it’s about damn time”!?

    • PhoenixPath

Nope. I tried several times and it just came out, “FACKWORS!!”

  • Td

Correct me if I’m wrong but I should be able to flash the leak granted its signed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/matt.jones.7355079 Matt Jones

If it’s the same build, can we just flash now and still be good for future upgrades?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Robson/1317522018 Chris Robson

Already got jellybean on my s3 and I’m sure I’ll be updating this phone even when vzw puts it out to pasture.

  • Buckoman

VRBLK3? Uh oh. That’s not good. That’s REALLY not good

I installed it (the latest leak, same build number) that came out a week or so ago, and it’s bug ridden goodness. I swipe pages and it glitch freezes for a split second. Notification bar is delayed when coming down. Battery life is decreased, and it still has that annoying lockscreen issue where the help text keeps popping up. I factory reset and everything, so this is in the build. Not what I expect from “Project Butter” at all, as I don’t even see an improvement over ICS in this build.

Is there any light to shine on this?

    • billy routh

Sounds more like a problem with your device. I’ve installed it on three devices and all three of them are running better than ever.

      • Buckoman

What do you recommend I do?

        • PhoenixPath

          Factory reset.

          • Buckoman

With the ROM still on it or reflash?

          • PhoenixPath

Just go into settings – backup & reset – factory reset. (You’ll need to re-enter your Google deets and re-install your apps…)

          • Buckoman

Well. It’s running a LITTLE better. But now the two finger pull down on notifications doesn’t work.

            Ugh. This bothers me.

        • endurotech

Make sure you check all options when factory resetting. Yes this also means you need to wipe the internal storage and remove SD card

    • ed

re install with a full wipe. mine is working great!

    • Yoderz

I’m with you on this. Not too excited to see that it’s the same as last week’s leak. Primarily because of the excessive battery drain. I flashed back to stock ics last night because of it. Hopefully it was just the ROM I was using that was causing the drain and not the stock build.

  • DC_Guy

So since they included Isis support in this update I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath for them getting Google Wallet working on my Note 2.

  • Kwab Tanks

    YESSSSSSS

  • Drummer62

Next up, 4.2 for Galaxy Nexus, bwahahahahaha!!!

  • Leo

Yay Verizon is the best said no one ever

  • http://twitter.com/DroidKl0wn Droid Kl0wn

Why is everyone so happy? We’ve had JB leaks for months haha. Root your phone and be done with it! ;O)

    • http://twitter.com/afgbruins21 A.

Don’t want to root my phone. I’m not really that tech-savvy so I don’t wanna void my warranty or whatnot.

      • http://www.facebook.com/BreezlyBruin420 Chris Long

You don’t need to be very tech savvy to root. If you can read and follow instructions, you’re fine.

      • jax

You do not need to root to flash the leak with odin. I dont no why people keep saying that

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500038791 Christopher Daniel

Because everyone wants to whine and moan, and wait for their “expected” update, rather than actually learn about the technology they’re using… You don’t need root, and won’t lose your warranty with the right amount of learning… (It’s not very hard… Couple steps… 4 at most) You could be running a non rooted version of the latest 4.1.1 leak, which is set to be the OTA update anyway… Again, using ODIN… Very easy to do, and you don’t have to root…. I have no idea why people, including the rest of the tech forum, except droid-life keep saying that… I guess it’s because of the simple fact you’re flashing a version that isn’t the final OTA from Verizon….? Who knows… I’ve flashed the leaked version, but will be reverting back to the OTA Version only to ensure it’s validity and to make sure there are no features that are incorporated into the OTA Version that may/may not have been in the leak… (ie… ISIS Payment compatibility, Global Roaming, Road Runner Email, etc…)

          • http://twitter.com/afgbruins21 A.

okay tbh i dont really understand a lot of what you said. and dont really know what ODIN is. and i dont need global roaming or whatever “road runner email” is

      • http://twitter.com/gishump Jeff Rosen

non-tech savy person on droid-life? Unheard of.

        • http://twitter.com/afgbruins21 A.

haha i just wanna learn about like new phones i kinda skip over most of the other posts…

  • http://twitter.com/Bateluer Robert Boluyt

An upgrade from ICS to JB on a GS3 is only 62MBs?! Razr HD was 276MB, and GTab8.9 from HC to ICS was ~300MB.

  • jester4281

No word on if this includes the Samsung premium pack ??

    • AverageUser

Hey 6 months at a time

  • JohnPA2006

Too late I already want Key Lime Pie, FAIL VERIZON !!!! (I kid I kid… Thank you big V)

    • AverageUser

Key lime comes out next week

  • Shannon Reed

I have that leaked versions on my phone right now and it is buggy as hell. Constant force closes, horrible battery life (it won’t make it through an 8 1/2 hour work day, I only use it briefly on my 2 ten minute breaks and 30 minute lunch, before this update I would be at around 60%) drop down notifications can only be expanded and collapsed by pinching. Numerous other things but you get the gist.

    • scorchedsky

Are you just on stock K3? I’ve been on all the JB leaks in some form or another (CleanROM or just stock deodex) and they’ve been fine. J1 kinda sucked on battery life, but I can get 24+ hours on the stock battery on the newer JB leaks with 3 hours screen time. Haven’t had a force close in months. If I were you, I’d try one of the custom ROMs over at XDA if the stock leak isn’t working for you…

    • http://www.facebook.com/BreezlyBruin420 Chris Long

I’ve been using Beantown 106′s Jelly Beans Build 5 which is based on the leaked version, and it’s flawless. I’ve never had any problems with his ROMs.

  • T4rd

Has the AT&T and T-Mobile S3s got JB yet (officially)? If not, then Verizon isn’t doing too bad then. I know the Sprint S3 got it a month or so ago.

    • trixnkix637

Dude, Verizon is dead last as always. Att & Tmobile got official JB already. Granted it’s hard to tell if your statement is sarcasm or not.

      • T4rd

Serious question. I never saw it in the news that they got the update too.

Thanks for downvoting a legit question, guys.

    • PhoenixPath

Well…now you’re just going to get down-voted for complaining about down votes. The internet is a fickle beast…

      • T4rd

Lol, indeed. Now I’ve edited my post so it can deserve its down votes ;-).

        • PhoenixPath

There ya go. Of course, now you’re going to get up-votes… ;-)

  • JohnPA2006

    WHOOOO HOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!

  • Rich R

And still no “Swype” keyboard for the GNex which was released 7 months earlier unless we download from a 3rd party! F Vzn

  • Dilson Silva

why do those pics show onscreen keys?

    • Buckoman

      Cause Verizon can’t Photoshop.

I just don’t understand why they don’t take an actual screenshot.

    • LionStone

Oh that’s just the S3 trying to act like a real Android device :-)

      • billy routh

The s3 and the note 2 are the best android devices out and can do 10× more than any nexus device out today.

        • T4rd

          Exaggerate much..?

          • http://www.facebook.com/BreezlyBruin420 Chris Long

Billy’s right. They’re the top selling Android devices. You can spin it however you like, but facts are facts.

          • michael arazan

Just like the Nexus, welcome to your one and only JellyBean Update, Verizon will not give you anymore updates for JellyBean from now on.

        • NexusMan

          yea…like S Voice!

          • Kurt Weber

            hey s-voice is useful…!
            said no one ever

          • NexusMan

LOL. I AGREE! My comment was totally a joke :)

Really? The king of marketing victims are iPhone users. If u don’t like the Damn phone then why are u on this discussion

        • nightscout13

I like the GS3 and GN2 also, but they are not 10x better than Nexus devices.

        • Jason James

          can u list these things????

        • Jim McClain

ok, would you care to list the 10 times more you are speaking of ? I have a galaxy nexus and would love to see your 10

        • LionStone

You forgot to insert, “In my opinion”… Best “sold” does not equate to best device, we learned that with the iDevice :-)

      • EvanTheGamer

Real Android device? Shooo Apple iSheep lover. Don’t let the barn door hit ya on the way out.

        • LionStone

iSheep lover? Hehe, shows what you know…please name another Android device that sports an iButton for Home? :-)

      • Adrian Bevington

Look, both are good, don’t be hating.

        • LionStone

Haha, hating? Did you not see my happy face at the end of my comment? I was having fun, you got trolled…like the others ;-)

  • scorchedsky

Nice one VZW. On-screen keys in one of the photos, Google “Plus” instead of Google Now, and it’s the same update that we’ve had since last Friday? At least try to pretend like you care about your best-selling phone

  • Eric

We waited long enough why not just bump us to 4.2, ugh!

  • http://twitter.com/MyndMayze John

This can only mean one thing… the world’s going to end!

  • jboogie1289

C’mon with it Big Red!!!!! Lets make it happen tomorrow…..or Friday. I’m easy.

  • Nick

Whoever faked this, called “Google Now” “Google Plus” by accident.

    • Jared Fulgham

That’s how you know it’s real Verizon made, all the errors and whatnot… :)

  • schoat333

For having such a large cast of Android devices, you would think Verizon would know more about Android.

    • John23

i’m sure they’re probably using the phone with that other operating system.

  • WalkerNA

Seriously? “Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software updrade?” I thought the excuse for always being last to releasing upgrades was that they were doing some hardcore testing. They can’t even complete their first full sentence without an error.

    • http://www.facebook.com/christian.t.clauss Christian Trevor Clauss

Lol and since when was Google Now, Google Plus? They failed big time on this.

  • Corey D

I hope there’s an option to not allow popup notifications for SMS, because I hate handcent.

  • Nex__

Damn would that mean that the GS3 would have same version of android as GNex? That would be depressing. I can’t tell for sure since i’m rooted etc. etc.

    • http://www.facebook.com/drekryan Derrick Lambert

Until Key Lime Pie comes out…

  • SexciiP

Oh crap…If I get Jelly Bean I won’t be able to look at flash videos anymore….*Sigh*

    • T4rd

Flash still works on JB. At least it has on my Gnex.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dominick-White/642535026 Dominick White

      Just side load it

    • DC_Guy

Flash still works with the native Samsung browser. I sideloaded it to my Note 2 and it works just fine and if you already have it on your S3 you should be fine.

    • super droid

Side load does work (rooted and running leak) but it’s a little buggy, for instance if you go into a full screen video, you can’t just push the back button to get out and also it doesn’t keep your screen on, it turns off according to set timeout interval, you have to keep touching screen ever 10min (or whatever your screen off time is set to)… or use smart stay in well lit area.

    • http://www.facebook.com/BreezlyBruin420 Chris Long

I’ve been on JB for about 6 weeks and Flash works fine.

  • Verizon still sucks

    woohoooo!

  • DanSan

    i cannot believe my eyes…..

  • SexciiP

Well it’s about darn time! :D

  • Chris Wood

I just might shed a tear. I thought this day would never come!

I guess this day isn’t actually hear yet. :(

  • chris125

Only 62mb. Used to those huge file sizes with skinned devices

    • john

based on the “screenshots” you get stock android. So bye touchwiz crap ux. hahah Just kidding. Seriously verizon, should get some designer that actually knows that a screenshot on HD will be fine for this stuff and that knows that google now is not GOOGLE PLUS!

  • Tyler Haines

We’ll would ya look at that they caved

  • http://twitter.com/splendorthought Splendor Thought

    whoohoo!!!!!! Finally!

  • Scott

Why is Verizon calling Google Now Google Plus?

    SMH

  • Kevin Jones

Sooooooo Google Now is called Google Plus now? Interesting.

  • BlKtigra

    So yeah about those Mayans….

    • John2go
