DROID DNA Bootloader Reportedly No Longer Unlockable Through HTCDev

To no one’s surprise, the HTCDev bootloader tool apparently no longer works on the HTC DROID DNA. The timing couldn’t be worse, of course, as the device launches on Verizon in the morning. We first reported that the tool was working, but feared that a last minute change would ruin our fun. That change has happened according to members at XDA.

In related and more positive news, developers do not appear to be worried about this change affecting their progress on fully unlocking to S-OFF. In the mean time, though, this will likely stunt immediate ROM development.

And do I even need to mention the responsible party for this move? Probably not.

To my surprise I am really enjoying sense 4+. I can from the galaxy nexus, which was running 4.2, and Iam really happy I upgraded.

  • brando56894

Wow that was quick! I’m stuck with Verizon for another year but after that I’m going to seriously considering switching to another carrier because this is just BS.

  • ozo012

The Incredible 4G got unlocked without HTCDev, they’ll get this one too.

  • Jim

Well, I won’t be rushing out today to buy one. My errands list just got a little shorter!! None of us should be surprised. This is exactly what I expected. I am glad this report came out before I bought it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/steven.bobulsky Steve Bobulsky

    Whoops. They mispelled the name.
    It’s not DNA, it’s DOA.

  • jaybar

    ..

  • dandar

That’s why Motorola is still a better choice. At least with the Maxx HD you have pretty much a stock Android experience and Jelly Bean right around the corner (I’m running JB on mine for close to a month now.) I also can regularly go three days between charging.

  • C-Law

Verizon is so evil. So many people would leave if they could. What happens when we all finally can go to an equal, friendly carrier?

  • Verizon hater!

ARGH I hate verizon also, but unlimited data is my true weakness :/

  • markopolo

As much as i love Verizon I’m leaving them because of all of this locking and no more unlimited data there is nothing to hold me down to them anymore . I rather PA y less in a shietty service and not worry about 2,years on contract . Byte Verizon

  • tomn1ce

I knew it was too good to be true/to stay that way for long….wow the night before that is one big of a smack on the face for those waiting to get it and unlocking it right away….the xda devs should have this taken care of soon enough….

  • kdub

Doesn’t matter it will be unlocked with s off in no time. When will they learn ?

  • RaptorOO7

Seriously, and no one thought this wasn’t going to happen. Verizon likes to suck the air out of the room, pee in the punch bowl. It was bound to happen and it did.

My hope is this kills sales but sadly the vast majority of users have no clue what rooting is, what you get and why you want it. They are basically aSheep instead of iSheep.

I’ll take my GN2 and root it anyways.

    • WCDave

So… the vast majority of users are sheep for using their phone as the manufacturer and carrier intended… am I understanding you correctly?

  • http://www.facebook.com/alex.woods.5832 Alex Woods

My two cents about Verizon: They damn near have the most reliable service in the US. Period. We as a developer community always find a way to get around these things. Yes, they got rid of unlimited data, yes they lock bootloaders, yes they brand phones. But who cares? At the end of the day all of that is fixable. Want unlimited back? Leave and got to sprint or Tmo or simply pay the full price of the phone, that’s what i’m doing with my Note 2. The bootloader will eventually be unlocked. And covering their branding is as easy a case. My point is, you people make out Verizon to be Satan when all they are is a business, doing business, and clearly what they’re doing is working or people wouldn’t have eaten it up like they do. /endrant/

    • tomn1ce

I hope that case of yours covers up the the home button so it can cover up the vzw branding…..I could care less about them branding the phone….as far as I know they the have the best service in my area. I always hear people complaining about their service on the other 4 carriers. Others just tell me the vzw is expensive…..is vzw more expensive yes do I always have good service you damn right I do. The way I look at, I’m only paying $15/month more then a plan on T-Mobile with unlimited data throttled at 5GB. I have unlimited data plan and I’m planning on keeping it for as long as I can. I’m used to buying a phone every 2 or 2.5 years anyway so paying full price for a phone its not a big deal for me.

  • Ibrick

This is why I was going to purchase on my way into work tomorrow, figured it would happen sooner than later, but the night before.. wow..

  • http://twitter.com/hexagram86 David

    that just happen!

  • Tim242

Note 2! Just 1 more week!!!

  • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

and this is why I left Verizon and got the Nexus 4 on T-mobile.

  • http://twitter.com/armus75 Armus

so much for another promising phone. next!

  • ShakaShakaBreak

And I planned on getting it this weekend….Looks like I’m gonna wait

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

Instead of whining about it on blogs… Spam their twitter feeds, emails, facebook, etc…

    • fixxmyhead

how about just leave this carrier

  • SLRSLY

    DL should do a poll.
“How many customers have ACTUALLY left Verizon?”
    I’d bet less than 5%

    • chris125

It would be less than 1%. People bitch and whine but that’s all they do

      • Dr_Buttballs

I left about 6 months ago. I know of a few other people that have or are doing the same.

      • zepfloyd

        you’re right.

“For the 10th consecutive quarter, Verizon Wireless reported the lowest postpaid customer churn rate (0.91 percent), meaning that fewer than 1 in 100 customers left Verizon Wireless during that three month period. That was the lowest churn rate of any of the nation’s major wireless providers.”
        http://news.verizonwireless.com/news/2012/11/verizon-wireless-customer-loyalty.html

        • TheMan876

I’ll leave when they finally force me off of my unlimmited data

      • turb0wned

Put me in that 1% that actually left. I’m tired of people saying that they are going to leave but don’t. Stop your bitching or do it.

        • sgtguthrie

I will when my phone breaks or contract ends, unless you want to pay my etf that is ;-)

        • Bedrock

I’m with you on this one. We can make a difference and make Big Red change by hurting them in the pocket. That’s the only language they speak, bottom $. For those of you who are truly tired of them and can Afford to leave Verizon and have another option in Reliable carries should do what the 1% has. Ditch Verizon of course thats my opinion.

      • Blasmonk

I would like to leave but they’re the only carrier with decent coverage in my area. The other carriers don’t even have solid 3G and Verizon’s already got 4G.

    • kane

I stayed with VZW. And I stayed with my unlimited LTE which I milk even though I don’t need to when at home. Once all the other carriers catch up to their network. Lots will likely leave then

    • Bedrock

Now that would be a good pole. 3 choices. 1) Yes I have left Verizon.
      2) Seriously considering the idea.
      3) No, I just love Verizon

      • Bedrock

        I meant poll.

    • bizi

Put me in the 1% I left and went to Sprint.. The data speeds are horrible but I’m no longer verizon’s b!tch.. I get phones early and they are all unlockable.. I’ll live with wifi until they get their LTE network up and running.. Plus I’m saving a lot of money every month… Guys trust me life goes on after Verizon. You don’t have to keep buying their bloated locked phones ..

  • CaptainHowdy13

Reminds me of my time in the Army “I got a year till I’m out”

  • CRH45

and as soon as i get tired of my gnex (contract ends in feb.) i will be leaving vzw for good.

  • QQpayne

Doesn’t matter much to me, Nova or Apex on the DNA and I will be satisfied.

  • chris125

hahah what else is new? Figured with it all over the web verizon wouldn’t let it stay

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Gulyas/709632554 Daniel Gulyas

Ironically, this crap about “ruining customer service and user experience” is ruining my user experience and makes me feel unserved as a customer, to the point that I will leave when my contract is up, no ifs ands or buts about it.

  • Butters619

Oh yeah, shouldn’t affect S-OFF…..where have I heard that. (One X owner)

  • DroidXFanatic

And another reason why I will be leaving Verizon January 12 when my contract is up.

    • Greg Morgan

      Diddo…

  • Justin Garrison

So since I’ve been on the GNex and haven’t had to deal with this, can somebody tell me what this means? Does it mean no ROMs at all, no ROMs for a couple weeks? Etc.?

    • WCDave

It is a temporary problem. It will get fixed, timeframe based on how much the developers work at unlocking with S-OFF, then ROMs will start sprouting up

  • nickS

getting of this year old verizon contract asap

  • DanWazz

bummer, but everyone knew this would happen.

  • fauxshizzl

MY OG Droid sits in the corner and weeps at what the future has become, and of what that phone originally stood for.

  • Kurtis Tamez

Was just dealing on an employee Special Ed. DNA… Hmm, to just cancel it, or buy it an throw it on eBay….

    • Mack

Ebay for sure, if you really aren’t planning on keeping it.

      Profit.

    • WCDave

Have fun with that. As one employeel to another, I should add that as soon as they see your MEID on a non-employee line, you will be considered in competition with Verizon and likely be fired. Don’t believe me? Check the t&cs.

On a side note, no you were not just dealing with it. They aren’t available for order until December.

      • Kurtis Tamez

I didn’tsay I had it in my hands. Dealing with the employee. I don’t want them to get fired. Just bag the whole thing.

        • WCDave

Touche . apologies for the false assumption. Still I wouldn’t advise letting him give it to you – they really are quite strict on the limited edition devices.

  • Greyhame

    EFFF YOUUUU VERIZON!!!!!!

  • pd240

Things like this are driving my decision to leave Verizon and get a nexus 4 with straight talk. The DNA is a great phone but I would prefer a stock Android ROM on it. Sense looks old and tired.

    • leoingle

I am in the exact same boat as you.

    • Bedrock

Don’t blame you for thinking about leaving. I’ve been a loyal Verizon customer for years. Well not anymore, TMobile gets my business now. Verizon could care less what you and I want.

      • Ravi Rao

Buy some shares of Verizon and they’ll care what you want.

        • Ha

And by some you mean “a large quantity” of course

      • http://twitter.com/armus75 Armus

straight talk throttles at 2g. worthless

    • Tim242

Straighttalk throttles at 2GB, and forbid streaming of any kind in their TOS.

      • sgtguthrie

I have no idea why someone would give you a down vote for stating the facts of straight talks tos :-

        • Tim242

They must be mad they didn’t read the TOS, and now they lost their unlimited LTE haha

    • http://twitter.com/trter10 Luke

that’s exactly what i did. Porting the number was painless but make sure to order the sim when you order the phone

      • Bedrock

You are right, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to port and keep my number.

    • Jim

I’m with you. I am seriously considering bailing on VZW! I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be unlockable by the time launch day hit or that they would OTA a patch or force HTC to close door within a week or so of launch. I was planning on buying today and unlocking before that happened, but now I’ll wait and see if the dev community can hack it to my liking before I commit.

  • Dorian Brooks

    SON… OF… A…

  • GotSka81

    Google Wireless: Hypebeast mode enabled.

  • Korey Page

    And we are surprised………no?

  • PalmerAdam
  • http://twitter.com/trter10 Luke

    What did you expect?

  • Mike Kilar

And that’s why I don’t buy non-Nexus devices. My work phone is an EVO 4G LTE and while I like the size, screen and feel in my hand, I rather use my Galaxy Nexus. Sense is horrible.

  • Greg Morgan

    Thanks Verizon!

verizon seriously sucks. i blame verizon for this.

    • Greg Morgan

Who else would you blame? lol

      • thedonxr

        Obama

        • Christopher Moore

          Romey. Oh wait!!!

      • zepfloyd

Kellex for posting the article about it working before launch. ;p #DoubleEdgedSword.

      • chris125

HTC for not having a pair and letting verizon tell them to remove it from their site.

        • michael arazan

Verizon is as worse as republicans when it comes to fear of the unknown and they don’t want to believe in science and technology. No phone can bring down a network because people were able to put a new os or remove or add apps to their phone.

Verizon’s new logo should be an ostrich with it’s head buried in the sand!

          • geedee82

            Haha, great comment! +1

      • kixofmyg0t

        Motorola. AMIRITE GUISE?

      • rjh20136

        Bush of course!

    • itznfb

There goes any interest I had in this phone…. thanks VZW.

  • ddevito

And gnex stock goes back up

  • ddevito

    Rezound 2.0

    • Meticode

The Rezound has a unlockable bootloader and is S-Off and has working AOSP/AOKP ROMs working to 95% capacity on them.

      • AlexKCMO

Chad got AOSP working at 90% about 2 months… maybe 3 months ago. Needless to say, the phone is on ICS and about 6 months behind a current update. Jellybean will come (4.1 or 4.2 JB?), with time.

95% working AOSP based ROMs is not something to brag about. I give all the props in the world to Chad, but short of him, I don’t see much to look forward to on the Rezound. I swapped out for a G-Nex and I love it. The screen isn’t as great the Rezound, but 4.2 will be hitting CM10 at any point. I don’t have the same enthusiasm for the Rezound.

        • zepfloyd

          CM 10.1 for the record.
