Does it say anywhere you can’t do exactly what you described? Could it be they included a charging port so people can actually charge their device rapidly?

to sell accessories and docks/keyboards etc.
I have a TF700, I don’t mind as long as I have a microSD card slot. One or the two are necessary, so that I can easily access files for my tablet with one of two very common tools: a MicroUSB cable or a MicroSD card reader. Since I almost always have at least one of these, I am usually ok.
As a last resort there’s always Samba filesharing, but that needs root ;(

It appears you’re right that a lot of newer Android tablets are using usb. So the question is why are the two companies selling the most Android tablets, Samsung and Asus (excluding the Nexus) still using their own proprietary solutions?

Totally not true. A 2A USB charger is sufficient for charging.
Nook Color, ALL Kindle Fires (even the big new one), ALL Archos models since the G8, ALL of HTC’s short-lived tablets (Flyer, View, Jetstream), ALL Moto Xyboard/Xoom2/Xoom FE models, the Pantech Element, the BB Playbook, Acer’s Iconia A510/710/110, Lenovo’s A1/A2109, S2110…the list of tablets that charge over microUSB is quite extensive by now.

I am fine with it charging via microUSB only whe the screen is off. My Nexus 7 will charge over a “generic” microUSB charger, jus not while it’s powered on. But if I go on a trip and want to pack super-light, I want to be ale to bring a 2-port USB AC charger to charge my headset, phone and tablet and not have to worry about packing anything else.

I use a USB OTG for my Nexus devices. it works great and I can carry 32/64GB in my pocket/bag when I think I’ll be needing it. Honestly, as long as I manage my large games, (and my Nandroid backups) I don’t have a problem with 16GB on the phone.

Most likely the Nexus 10 will be from Google much like the Nexus 7 was. You’ll probably see it advertised as:

“The first 10in Tablet available from Google Play”, “The first 10in Nexus Tablet”, etc.

On most 10″ tablets OEMs have a proprietary charger. Some of them have hacks to charge with microUSB but not all.
