Verizon Kicks Off DROID RAZR MAXX HD Ad Campaign, the “DROID” Voice Returns

Shortly after the original RAZR MAXX and DROID 4 launched, we saw a much more personal and almost poetic “DROID” campaign from Motorola. The ads were a drastic change from the loud and explosive robotic action sequences that accompanied Verizon’s DROID phone commercials. They featured real humans talking about their lives rather than futuristic ninja chicks fighting robots. In other words, they were a breath of fresh of air.

Today, Verizon brought back the loud and explosive action for the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, this time with massive CGI speakers in the wall of an apartment in the desert without a roof. (What?) The man featured in the commercial decides that after placing a call and using those speakers, that it would make sense to use his phone to blow a hole through his wall and then walk out into the previously mentioned desert…because well, he’s “powering through.” Again, what?

Terrible commercial. Did the guy parachute in? With all the violence in the world, all we need is a cell phone activated exploion advertising cell phones.

  • http://www.steelbandhire.com/wedding-reception-music/ Steel Bands

Needs better brand integration. There was also a glimpse of Pulse; why?

  • dro159

    I want those speakers

  • http://twitter.com/n0m0n_ n0m0n

    What was that desktop cradle?

    Thanks

  • Rodys Gonzalez

i thought it was a cool commercial;… we already know what the phone’s can do nowadays!!;.. :)

  • Trevor

    He’s probably gonna get robbed.

  • duke69111

Stupid commercial, but where do I get the app/game that blows up wall.

  • EvanTheGamer

    Yay, The Droid Voice Lives!

  • skant

    what if it rains?

  • Sirx

HOLY SH*T–THERE’S A CANNON/RPG APP ON THAT THING!!!

Way to bury the lead for all these months, Droid Life :-P

    • Ionut Costica

Actually, he installed a Bluetooth/Wifi direct controlled RPG in his house…Which is such a smart idea… NOT. Now I feel the need to walk around searching for people’s hidden in-house RPG launchers, the go “Oooh, what does *this* button do?” :P

I like the crazy commercials lol

Well this here is a commercial that makes no sense whatsoever…and I freaking love it. Before I get flamed, let me explain. The way I see it, is that in the earlier days when the OG Droid and Incredible came out, people didn’t have the grasp like they do now as far as what smartphones do. Now a lot of people have them and are honestly just looking to upgrade, so you point out a couple features (HD display, 4G, cloud gaming, simultaneous voice and data), and you’re good to go. Remember, these commercials are meant for the masses, and are supposed to be a stark contrast from Apple commercials. I think they accomplish that. Plus it has explosions….that’s all I need.

  • Loony2nz

Simultaneous voice and data? When did they fix that on VZW?

    • LionStone

Not sure, when did it break?

    • Sam Paasch

They’ve had simultaneous voice and data for a while now. Most 4G phones have it (not all, but most) But since it uses the 3G for voice and LTE for data, many phones, like my original RAZR MAXX, can only do simultaneous voice and data when an LTE network is present. So it doesn’t work in 3G only areas.

  • DanSan

i dont get why they try to do all this high tech, crazy commercials. just do what apple does, highlight a stupid ass, simple feature that’s a complete gimmick and idiots will pour in by the thousands.

  • Core

is that the actual desktop dock for it ?

  • 0pusX

I like how they make sure to point out simultaneous voice/data…. the option that is preventing me from buying the new iPhone 5.

  • moelsen8

wow.. introducing the new droid razr maxx hd by motorola. what a mouthful. it’s horrible.

  • NexusMan

I am a fan of the robotic, loud, brash Droid commercials…but this one is just not good.

  • Greg

I like it. I am a sucker for sweet CGi speakers and explosions! Are those the new beats by Dre MAXX edition?

  • DanWazz

Back to the useless non-sense, high tech ad campaign.

  • brando56894

This sounds ridiculous, I can’t watch it at work though because youtube is blocked :( The “Droid” voice on the OG was cool once or twice but then it got annoying, especially when you were rebooting your phone in a quite environment.

  • Nate

Saw the title in my feedly feed, and said, “Here we go.”

  • http://twitter.com/webtwoohno Jack

It kind of feels like they are marketing the M to the “average smartphone user” and the Razr HD MAXX to the “geek crowd”, while still doing it poorly. I’ve got to say the M commercials are much better.

  • trophynuts

The OG DroidX ad campaign is still the best IMO. Remember the teaser and then the full commercial? That was great ish right there.

  • Philip A. Kaiser

I guess the race horse that was duct-taped to a scud missile has been killed off and turned into glue.

  • Mikezilla Harris

Who wants real people talking about there lives? I’m a dude. Wow me with explosions!

  • meatsheild

here is another commerical for the maxx that was made by google.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os6-Esjal6c

    • MikeSaver

Now thats actually making me want to buy the phone. Even though I won’t. Because I have a Nexus. Which has stock android. And gets fast updates. Hear that Verizon?!?!

    • Mikezilla Harris

I think i like the song more than anything.

    • Tyler Chappell

I like this commercial way more but I also like the music in this explosive commercial and wish it didnt end so soon. =

  • XvierX

Are they really going to go with this cheap looking flipstand instead of manufacturing a true docking station? Yeesh, it looks so cheap. I think I could fashion one just as good if not better out of paper clips.

  • http://twitter.com/_GotHeeem Eric Witts

How about the overly massive 4G LTE service status indicator….Anyways, Droid Life.

    • Tyler Chappell

I am glad I am not the only one that noticed this lol

  • MikeSaver

Verizon can suck it. I hope Google steps up in the Marketing Branding department. The name “Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD” sounds ridiculous. It’s a five word product. Thats like the equivalent of being like,

“hey what phone do you have?”
-“Oh I’ve got the Extreme Mega Ultra Phone 3000″

    • Paul

Well, Motorola isn’t really part of the product name and I think verizon is the one putting “droid” in the names without Motorola’s control. People will probably say they have a “Maxx HD” or “Razr HD”. Just like people say they have an “STI”, not “Subaru Impreza WRX STI Limited”.

But I do think verizon needs to drop the “Droid” in phone names, at least.

      • Tyler Chappell

I agree, I just had to explain to someone yesterday that his Samsung Galaxy S3 is NOT a “Droid”. They also should get rid of it just because its licensed from LucasFilm

    • scokeguy

Now with the rumored Razer x, will they seriously call it the Motorola droid Razer maxx hd x? Cause if they do I’ll kill myself.

      • kixofmyg0t

You’re not allowed to comment on the RAZR X or RAZR T Mkay.

    • durangojim

I think their next phone is going to be called “Droid Fanboy Hardon”

    • Jason Brown

reminds me of the samsung galaxy s2 hd skyrocket 4g lte on at&t (or some ridiculously long name like that).

  • r0lct

Where’s the rest of the commercial which shows me why I would want to buy it over any other Android phone or even the old RAZR Maxx?

  • Al

If I can blow a hole in the wall with that phone automatic win. Take my money :-)

    • KleenDroid

If only it would blow a hole in its encrypted bootloader.

      • mustbepbs

        Zing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/larry.a.hartman Larry A Hartman

To bad i have moved away from Motorola after 7 moto phones finally got a GS3 and like it a lot more.

  • Paul

You’d think they would have brought back the extreme commercials with the Incredible X. There’s not much about the Razr HD that’s extreme, besides battery life – and that’s like saying a car is extreme for getting good mpg.

  • paul_cus

Nice, always liked the crazy commercials better anyways. Now they just need to bring back the ninja chick.

  • Plerisei

I see they are back to the pointless commercials again, lol

  • zepfloyd

Don’t miss the subtle wall blast metaphor for Apple’s ‘walled garden’.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Hah :P

    • Greyhame

      Violently subtle that is. Nice.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

Please please please, make the Droid brand die!!! Long live Nexus!

  • tonysam1

    Ugh

  • bkosh84

That was easily the stupidest commercial I have ever seen..

    • nwd1911

“Where other phones only make calls and play music/videos, Droid blows giant holes in your apartment, wasting your security deposit.”

      • The_Other_Ray

Imagine what it will do in your pants.

    • http://twitter.com/morpheus282 William

I don’t know about that, the commercials Old Navy put out a few years back with the cast of The Jeffersons were pretty dumb. I didn’t have a store nearby at the time and the commercials left me with no clue what they were trying to sell. The current round of Target commercials is pretty stupid as well. This one is at least on the same level, but I don’t know if it ranks as the stupidest ever. Either way, the marketing department needs to stop taking acid.

    • http://twitter.com/wade_county John P

Exactly. How did he get there in the first place? Does he have a door? If so, now he has to live with a wall that has been blown up.

      DROOOIIIID.

      • michael arazan

The Droid HD also teleports you too, maybe? Into roofless walled in rooms that look like military kill boxes that they practice in for armed incursions.

    • durangojim

Then you obiviously never saw any of the other droid/ninja/aliens/bionic chick commercials

  • Siggy

    Seems legit.

  • moozicmon

    That was really stupid.

  • Josh Persaud

    wat.

  • Radgatt

    That was…..boring
