Live Chat – Apple’s iPhone 5 Event

Look, we fully understand that we aren’t an iPhone or Apple site, but the iPhone 5 is the only story in tech today. Every other company is probably using it as a holiday of sorts because they would be foolish to try and announce something that would compete with this moment. So since they are the competitor and we like to see what kinds of silly things they claim to invent, we thought we would run a live chat. No, not a live blog since we aren’t there or covering as press, but a “chat” because we like to hang out with the DL community and talk about hot topics.

Let’s keep it clean, yet fun. Join us below.

  • Ryan Frankenstein

Did any of you read the Steve Jobs book that came out after he died. wow It paints him as the biggest a-hole since hitler (and he paid for the biography or autobiography or whatever you call it)

    • j_peter

At least he had original ideas unlike the losers at Google. Copying someones else’s OS is just pathetic.

      • http://www.facebook.com/borgey401 Andrew Borges

ohhhh that’s right…… Google must have copied lots of features like that pull down notification shade huh?

  • Mark

Ok, this is going to be an unpopular comment but I’m tempted to get one. I got the og droid the day it came out and the galaxy nexus the day it came out and I absolutly love the android os. But I’m tired of bad battery life. It’s yet to be seen, but I suspect you can use this new iPhone for a day without even thinking “ah crap, if I do x will I have enough juice to make it through the night?” that way of thinking is getting really old. I hate iOS and am loving jelly bean, but if your battery is dead it doesn’t really matter how sweet the os is…

    • NexusPhan69

Nope. My two friends with a 4S go two full charges a day. 5 will probably be worse because of LTE and a bigger screen. If you want battery life, get the MAXX. Your GNex with extended battery will outlast the 4S with similar usage.

    • ezpotato

      razr maxx. genius.

RAZR M even is getting good reviews on battery.

  • Shin77

How is it still $100 for an additional 16GB and then $200 for an additional 48GB? Those are the same prices from 2 years ago, and I’m pretty sure memory has gotten quite a bit cheaper since then

  • Chris

I’m sorry, but THIS is what they come up with?

The exact same looking phone, for the 3rd time. It has a .5″ bigger screen, a 5th row of docks (not like you couldn’t already do that with jailbreaking). NFC, Panorama, 4G (ALL have been out for over a year). And ImageSense which was copied from HTC (which I hope has a patent).

And guess what, iOS still looks the EXACT same, but with more features stolen from Android. Thank God I’m not interested in Apple, and didn’t wait a year for a slightly bigger and faster iPhone 4 and 4s…

    • j_peter

Thank goodness no one cares what you think.

      • ezpotato

        i do, though.

        • Chris

          How nice! :D

      • MonkeyWork

        You seem to.

    • Chris

And just to clarify, I had an iPod touch 2g and 4g, and had a Macbook (sold them all a bit ago). So I did like Apple a few years ago, but not anymore.

    • http://twitter.com/JRogers1978 Jamie Rogers

      Actually, it doesn’t have NFC.

      • Chris

Really? Must have read that wrong! I’ll take it out of my comment if it lets me edit. Thanks.

  • Stewie

Google Secretly sends the “K” version Android out tonight just to F–K with Apple, now that would get everyone’s attention wouldn’t it? :)

  • NexusPhan69

Look at the iPod nano’s gigantic physical home button. Why is apple so stubborn? It looks hilariously bad.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angel-Luis-Gonzalez-III/591224353 Angel Luis Gonzalez III
  • Tim Buchanan

Apple: “The revolutionary iPhone 5 now does some more of the stuff Androids have been doing for years!”
    Yawn.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackBlizzNerd Ben Landwehr

No NFC. No wireless charging. No Bluetooth 4.0. No micro-USB compatibility. Software looks the same, barely does anything different. No wow factor. Moving on now.

  • Prime7

Apple’s newest feature: screen size fragmentation.

    • NexusPhan69

It could be worse for iPhone than android. Android apps are written to be scaled to different screen sizes. How is apple going to make this work?

  • RoadsterHD1

    does it run 4G LTE?

    • summit1986

      yes

    • LionStone

      Yep….finally :)

  • Frank F

I been buzzing in and out so no NFC for iPhone cinco correct???

    • summit1986

      correct, no NFC

  • GreenMeansGo

Time to sell off some of that AAPL. I am NOT impressed.

    • summit1986

It’ll still sell like crazy. Plus, the 4 being free on contract and 4S at $99 will keep sales up.

  • RoadsterHD1

is there a website to watch this live?

  • Robin
    • lostsync

This always happens after an Apple event because all of the hype and wild speculation inflates the stock price beyond where it should be, then reality corrects all of that once the product is actually announced. If you play the stock market, it’s a decent time to buy in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rufus2021 Jeff Morin

TOTAL BUST!!! At least put in NFC so it’ll be more relevant among the masses.

    • LionStone

No, you see, that would future-proof a phone…hehe!

      • http://www.facebook.com/rufus2021 Jeff Morin

        So true.

  • GreenMeansGo

I am underwhelmed. Android phones still FTW!

  • http://twitter.com/RGB_99 RGB_99

What’s the over/under for LTE patent lawsuits?

    • summit1986

With how bland the new additions are, I dont thing Sammy and HTC will feel as pressured to attack. I’m sure they’ll pick it apart and try to get some royalties, at the very least.

  • http://www.hypable.com/ Joshua Nealey

So, two years for a 4” screen and LTE. We’ve had panorama for what over a year now? This is going to infuriate me because so many iphone users are going to brag about their new Iphone 5 that is basically a phone that has features Android users have had for over a year. I was hoping they’d actually invent something, so it would cause Android manufacturers to up their game, but they didn’t do anything we don’t already have.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackBlizzNerd Ben Landwehr

Just waiting for Apple to go, “Just kidding, this isn’t the iPhone 5 – THIS, is the new iPhone. Like we’d really release a phone with decent improvements Android already has had for the last year.”

But alas, no.. Looks like Android will have to keep innovating on their own.

  • Andrew

Awful lot of Android fanboys going crazy in here. Be calm everyone, I think iPhone owners know they are sheep at this point. It’s not a secret and it doesn’t need proven anymore.

    • EvanTheGamer

We need to make iPhone lovers understand that they are fools and are making a grave mistake by going to the dark side. Unless they just want to use a simple phone that is easy for them to operate and to understand.

      • Andrew

        haha touché

      • Stewie

Cmon … that’s not fair. There are those who are not techno inclined, and using that simple, just works, phone is the right choice for them. The issue for all iSheep is that it is never THEIR experience, it’s Steves. (think it through iSheep, it will happen, then you’ll be all flamy at me for speaking the truth :) )

        • EvanTheGamer

I just strongly dislike Apple in general, which is the reason for my animosity towards ‘em. They suck, and people just don’t understand that. They want to sue everyone and everything. Why can’t they just be happy with what they got? “Why can’t we all just get along?!

    • j_peter

People use iPhones because they work like they should. I never have to worry about updating my phone, because that’s taken care of by Apple. With Android, you never know if you’re going to get an official update. That’s ridiculous. Also, I don’t have to worry about lagging or crashing of native apps. Crashing seems to be a feature of Android. I will never give up my iPhone, and if I do, it will NEVER be for Android.

      • SethMcDonald
        • Andrew

hahaha now that is a serious pie chart!!

      • Andrew

Well said for someone who has no experience with the device you are mocking. Those are all valid points relating to Android 1.6.

      • summit1986

Nice to see someone so open-minded and fact-oriented around here… /sarcasm

      • Droid4All

With my brother’s ipad, safari and chrome crash so often what you said is ridiculous.

        • j_peter

I think your brother might just be an idiot.

          • Droid4All

            Not sure if trolling
Or just likes iOS so much he will not be openminded

Seriously though, it sometimes has problems when I’m typing, such as not typing at all or freezing safari.

          • http://twitter.com/cheese cheese

Im on a new ipad right now. Its choppy as heck rendering the comments section. Safari crashes daily. Weak memory too. You open 2 tabs and it wont save the page. It has to reload everytime you goback to the tab.

Sorry but ios is a gimped OS.

          • MonkeyWork

I actually support this line of thinking. If only all OS could crash the browsers of idiots at will. The internets would be a nicer place.

  • JazzoRenee

I don’t understand why Droid Life, a free enterprise journalistic tech site, can’t do WTF it wants to do.

Apple would want you to believe that they own a patent on the internet and web messages boards, to which they don’t, so DroidLife keep doing you.
If you don’t like it as a reader, kick rocks, because we all KNOW you use Google to search the web anyway.

  • voll

Wake me up when something impressive is announced

  • http://www.facebook.com/bhughesiii Bill Hughes

Have to go and get me one of those new massive 4″ display iPhones.

  • Droid4All

Scumbag Apple! “calls competitors copiers and sues them for rounded rectangles, copies all the feature of their competitors”

  • j_peter

Once again, Apple is going to make Android totally irrelevant.

    • Droid4All

Pfft, with 1.5 year old features android had a long time ago? Tell me about how apple’s next iphone makes unicorns fart android rainbows.

    • JazzoRenee

      @j_peter You’re a joke and a fool.

      • j_peter

How appropriate. Joke describes Android, and fool describes the typical user.

    • hateallapple

      jackass_peter

      • j_peter

That’s your comeback? You fandroids are even lamer than I thought.

    • Laki S.

Totally. Apple releasing a new phone with year old features is gonna bury Android. Makes sense.

  • Buy This

    /puts on flame retardant suit

So I am truly bummed that the Bionic ICS update looks like it isn’t coming this week. I’m not angry and I don’t want to rail at VZW. I’m just bummed. I really had faith it would be here OTA by now. There was another leak in the last day or two but since .232 they have been useless in that you are unable to go back once you get on them. Security checks and CDT.bin and something something. I would flash .232 but for some weird reason I cannot get any version of RSD LITE to install on my computer which BLOWS. So yeah. Just bummed.

  • DRAZY

I like Apple I do, Im a Macbook Pro owner, but the new iPhone 5 is a solid dud.
It’s like Facebook’s stock – overhyped and underperforming.

    • EvanTheGamer

Glad you dislike the iPhone 5. Now with that said, come to the good side that is the Windows PC! ;) You’ll like the way Windows runs…we guarantee it.

      lol

    • RelentlessPace

I’m in the same boat. I have a Macbook that I absolutely adore, much more than my previous HP laptop, but I just can’t get into these iPhones. Probably thath my phone is much more integrated into my life, and I like think I live on the cutting edge, so I stick with Android :-p

  • Robin

    Ready the lawyers..here comes LTE

    • http://twitter.com/JRogers1978 Jamie Rogers

Didn’t Samsung say they were going to sue Apple if they put an LTE radion in the new iPhone?

      • Tim Buchanan

        I think it was HTC.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Williams/579249547 Jonathan Williams

          Actually both of them.

      • RoadsterHD1

YES, Samsung is probably calling the lawyers RIGHT NOW….

  • PhillipCun

I don’t understand the point of the live chat above if only 10% of the comments get moderated and published….

  • Ron_Swanson

    So it’s a stretched out 4S…lol

  • ohlongjohnson

Dude just said at 7.6mm “it’s the thinnest smart phone in the world”.

    lololol Droid Raazr???

    • Hunter

They also invented the “Panorama” feature on cameras that allow you to stitch multiple pictures together

  • Knlegend1

wow lol the rumors had it on point

  • TROLOLOL

When is Steve Jobs coming on stage?

    • JoshGroff

      O-o, wow, that’s just wrong.

    • Knlegend1

      Not cool

    • EvanTheGamer

      Too soon, too soon.

      • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

        So he’ll be on later?

        • EvanTheGamer

          Yes. In spirit I’d imagine.

          • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

iphone 5. Now with resurrect app. Truly remarkable.

          • EvanTheGamer

            LOL! Wow man. Wow.

          • RW-1

            Yea, it’s an app – iGhost …

    • JazzoRenee

      Hologram Stevie Jobs

    • TheDrunkenClam

Well you saw what they did with that Tupac hologram. Perhaps they could do it with Steve.

      • Speez

Digital Domain just filed for bankruptcy so doubt it lol

    • Mike

      i lol’d

    • LiterofCola

      I lol’d

    • fixxmyhead

i wish somebody would scream out “where’s steve” that would be hilarious

  • EvanTheGamer

Why the decision to start covering Apple events and Apple news now? I mean, come on! Apple is lame and Android is beast. Just don’t understand the sudden craving for covering Apple news. (end rant)

Sorry…haven’t had my coffee yet this morning.

    • JoshGroff

It’s the only thing happening today as stated in the small description thing, and they want people’s opinions and what not, also stated in the little description.

      • EvanTheGamer

Fine, I get that, but there are FAR more interesting and BETTER things that can be covered today. Like new apps, games, whatever, etc.

And all of the above would be way better than seeing the word “Apple” plastered across my favorite Android site. lol

  • leo

Is this still an android community?

    • JoshGroff

Mostly. Consider it droid(and other random occasional tech news)-life.

  • http://twitter.com/pop_arks Parks Dekle

Don’t sweat everybody. I too am interested to see what Apple is putting out because my sister will most likely buy it and I will have to put up with it

    • EvanTheGamer

Kick her out of the house…that would solve everything. Then change the locks and put up a sign that reads, “This house is protected by Andy. Not afraid of Andy? Well, Andy is an insane killer robot from the planet Android! He will destroy you if you enter. Scared now? That is all.

      • j_peter

        Typical fandroid.

        • hateappletrolls

go troll the apple sites fool

  • Kierra

Did any Apple site do this when any new android phone was released?

Is this purely for hits? I don’t get it

    • JoshGroff

I bet page hits have something to do with it, but some of us would like to see what new features are coming out, even if just to show them to our iOS loving friends.

    • http://twitter.com/pop_arks Parks Dekle

If we didn’t bother checking out the competition all us android lovers would be just as bad as the apple freaks. Of course they do it behind closed doors so we don’t see how much they are worried about android.

    • Jake

Apple fan sites don’t cover Android phone releases, because Apple fanboys don’t “get” cutting-edge technology. That’s why they’re Apple fanboys. Just kidding. Actually, several Apple sites cover Google IO’s Android announcements. It’s how they get ideas for their “want” for the next iOS release.

      • Manny

Ha funny considering that’s what Eric Schmidt said once he saw the original iphone and quit the apple board and all of a sudden…. Android sucks

        • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

          What did he say?

    • Manny

What android device will this many people really be waiting for?

    • EvanTheGamer

You and me both, dude, you and me both. There’s a thousand games or apps, or new roms, or whatever, that they could have covered, which would be WAY more interesting than covering an Apple event.

  • NexusPhan69

I’m really pumped for this iPhone 5 announcement. It means that the next Nexus is almost here!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I like this way of thinking.

      • NexusPhan69

How is it that there have been so few leaks about the next Nexus? Should we be getting worried that it might not be released as soon as we hope?

        • Mapekz

Last year the only real leaks we got were that picture of the Nexus on the fur carpet/blanket and TI announcing their partnership with Google for the reference platform for ICS. The real leaks didn’t come until 3 to 5 weeks prior to the actual device’s release.

I expect we won’t hear anything until later this month or early next.

    • JoshGroff

      Tis true. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/objection89 Miguel Angel Portela

I was really hoping for an iPad Mini :/

      • http://www.facebook.com/emad.zia Emad Zia

        yeah what happened with that?

  • Bewara2009

    Let the Apple madness begin.

  • Ron_Swanson

    Galaxy S3 > Iphone 5

    • Droidzilla

Heck, Galaxy SII > iPhone 5, in a great many ways. This newest device from Cupertino rode the failboat in to the announcement.

      • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

To the intelligent community they always are under impressive. Remember last year? Hell, even the fan boys were complaining. After a couple weeks it will be hailed as the pinnacle of technology and break sales records.

        • Droidzilla

Oh, no doubt it’ll break sales records. Then again, so will Big Macs.

  • zorak19620

Wouldn’t it be better to just take the evening off?

  • http://twitter.com/Erlack88 Erlack88

What I imagine the I*hone announcement will seem like.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJuhNDrX008

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Starting to scare me a bit there Kellz

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Well, we figured since we’ll be following along in today’s festivities, we might as well do it with our favorite group of Android enthusiasts.

      • JoshGroff

I’m all for it, let’s see what the dark side has to offer.

        • EvanTheGamer

So you can buy their next phone? lol Who really cares what they’re gonna offer. Seriously. It’s either you’re with Android or you’re against ‘em, can’t go both ways.

          • Hunter

            I’m for/with mobile… what now!

          • EvanTheGamer

Mobile…what? iPhone? Android? Can’t go both ways damnit. lol

          • Hunter

All innuendo aside. I can go both ways. And frequently do. :)

          • EvanTheGamer

            No loyalty, friend.

          • JoshGroff

I’m just hoping they release something that can actually compete so we can get better stuff. :)

          • EvanTheGamer

I just don’t understand the “apparel” for that retched device. Sure, they get all the latest games before we do(maybe it’s easier to develop on iPhone than it is on Android, I don’t know, I’m not a dev, or there’s more iLame users than there are Android users, so their games/apps get to more users), but their not open source, they despise customization, they want to keep users from “owning” their own device, etc. I just don’t get why people LIKE that blasted phone.

Sorry, I just don’t get it. They have NOTHING that is better than Android phones, other than simplicity. It’s easy to operate an iPhone, since I guess you can’t do jack with it other than running games, apps, and the like.

          • JoshGroff

I have no idea why people like it, but they do. As for developing, I think it has something to do with having to optimize the code for all the different CPUs/GPUs Android uses. (at least game wise.)

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Well I did just win a100$ gift card to the Apple Store from a raffle at my job.

        • Beezey

that might buy you a nice case

  • Jroc869, Cool story bro

Im not gonna lie, this cuts deep.

  • William Peterson

Can’t wait to see what “new” things come out today that we have had for a while.

    • JoshGroff

It’ll probably have these new things called widgets and LTE.

      • http://twitter.com/ezbbycame2play E. Echols

        What does “LTE”mean?

      • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

        Preeeeeettty much.

        • JoshGroff

Oh, and maybe even moving wallpapers, but that could be the next model. In all honesty though, I respect them for changing very little about the OS, makes it easier to troubleshoot for some of the less technical people.

      • William Peterson

No widgets fo you!! No LTE if things work out in favor of Samsung and HTC either. So sad. :( HAHAHAHA

        • JoshGroff

          I have widgets and LTE. :P (G-Nex and N7 when I hotspot my G-Nex)

          • William Peterson

Loving the N7 and sporting the GS3 so I agree! Just got my ass ate at a news site for asking where their widgets were and their LTE that was stolen from other companies. Was told Widgets are stupid and Apple helped start LTE. I love these people. I need counseling now, but I’ll make it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/soccermadman Allen George

If only Apple would go away in general. My job would be a lot easier. Unfortunately because everything costs (stupidly more) than a regular product (Android, or PC) the doctors only want Apple because its a status symbol. Apple please commit corporate suicide and die and burn in a fire. That is all.

    • manny

Doctors only want apple cause their products Work. Every android update is a bug fixx.

      • thebruce44

Android has been shown to have less crashes than the iPhone, so your point is false. I suspect you haven’t used an Android OS since the early days.

        • Stewie

He posted that thru siri – she added the extra “X” in fix, I’m sure Apple is working on that now ….

  • http://twitter.com/Xeneize480 Xeneize480

    Second here to laugh

    • http://twitter.com/Xeneize480 Xeneize480

apple bring the clowns out please lol

  • dingus

In b4, “I thought this was ‘galaxy nexus life’, not ‘iphone life’”.

    • Knlegend1

Can’t talk about the competition if you are oblivious to them.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Hah +1.

  • http://twitter.com/addisontodd Addison Todd

First. And; I would never buy one. ;-)
