Bugless Beast 4.1 for LTE Galaxy Nexus Released

Our buddy, Peter Alfonso, is still crankin’ out AOSP ROMs to this day. Last night, he released Bugless Beast for the LTE Galaxy Nexus (toro), which we recommend you jump on if you have yet to flash a Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) ROM. Pete usually keeps things as clean as possible, meaning he doesn’t add a bunch of fluff to his builds. If you are looking for something about as stock as it gets, this would be one to consider.

He did toss in Chrome as the default browser, gave you free native tethering, Google Wallet, louder audio output, and improved scrolling. He also recommends that you “download offline speech recognition package in Google Search settings once ROM is installed.” Google Apps are included. You may need to do a full wipe going from ICS to JB, but it’s up to you.

Cheers Brian!

  • Rob

installed BB and lost exchange services and email. were these taken out? i kinda need them so if there is no fix, i will have to go back to my previous rom.

  • Prime7

I’ve downloaded (but not yet flashed) this, VanirBean 8.0.1, and JellyBelly 3.1. Reading the change logs is pretty overwhelming for a newbie.

It would be nice if Droid-Life would do some sort of comparison between the more popular ROMs.

    • I avoid Vanir and Jelly Belly because they add to much to the stock AOSP. The Jelly Belly dev seems to break things too often for me.

  • THIS is the ROM to have!!! I’ve tried MANY and I insist on the stock experience. I can’t find a single thing wrong with this ROM and it’s pure stock.

  • Teabling

installing it now. Pete is the best

  • GawkerRedesignSucks

Does this have any significant advantage over the leaked stock Jelly Bean ROM? That’s what I’ve been running and it’s pretty terrific.

    • zepfloyd

That was a hacked up port of the GSM pre release. This is full AOSP 4.1.1 compiled with Verizon binaries available in source. This will be 1000x more stable.

      • GawkerRedesignSucks

Then it looks like it’s time for me to flash a new ROM!

  • Jimmy Chen

Is it possible to install stock browser? I like Chrome but unfortunately, it doesn’t support flash on Android.

    • GawkerRedesignSucks

Try ICS Browser+. It’s basically the stock browser with extended quick controls.

      Dolphin is also decent.

    • Detonation

Download a ROM with the stock browser, pull it from the zip and put it in system/app

      • Jimmy Chen

        Cool. Ty sir.

    • Will Rehse

my experience with JB is flash is unsupported currently anyway

  • dean2359

Is it possible to install a rom using just the phone itself? I usually use my PC then drag and drop

    • YankInDaSouth

Just use the browser on your phone to d/l the file and proceed as normal. (file will be in the download file on your sd card)

      • dean2359

Thanks I’m anxious to try try while I’m “working”….

        • YankInDaSouth

DOOOO EEEETT!!! Nothing better then getting paid to satisfy our flash addiction 🙂

          • dean2359

I’m gonna! I am addicted,I may need to be admitted to the Betty Ford hospital for my rom flashing addiction

    • Yes, just download the .zip(s) right to your phone. But you will need a file manager such as Astro to move the file from your downloads folder to the root of your phone. Really simple actually. This is how I do it.

  • BlackMamba

Would this work for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus LTE?

  • skyskioc

Instructions for installing ? Can this be flashed just like normal ie- wipe/data factory reset, cache, dalvik etc etc ?

    • rodney11ride

      • skyskioc

Thanks ! going try some JB

  • Go Hawkeyes

Pre-ordered a GS3 at full price. Received it yesterday. Been following the development for it. Got tired of all the crap. Returning it today. Buying a Nexus at full price. Installing this as soon as I get it. Will live happily ever after. The End.

    • Duong Vu

if paying full price for a nexus, you may as well wait for the GS3 developer edition

      • Cause the Gnex will still be cheaper and still have the dev support that he is looking for.

        • Duong Vu

I’m a nexus owner myself (lovin it).. but IIRC, only the HSPA+ Nexus from the Google Play store is cheaper ($350); VZW Nexus is still $599, no? And while what you say is true about dev support, I’d bet that GS3 will still get support from the all the “big boys” in the dev community. Combined with the superior hardware, if i were in OP’s shoes, I’d go for the GS3.

          • completely true forgot about that one. oh well i say either phone is great.

          • mothRelay

Check craigslist, I got a nexus 2 days ago for 200 bucks, including the extended battery. Guy met me at a verizon store so I could verify the ESN was clean and waited while I activated it. He had just gotten the GS3 and was selling the nexus.

Keep an eye out on there, you can nail a good deal.

      • michael arazan

Or sell the GS3 on ebay and buy a Nexus with that money and make a few bucks for yourself.

    • will bartlett

buy it on swappa. trust me. worth your time and money.

  • GTIguy

Can someone post a MD5 sum please?

    • j3nitti

I get the following MD5 sum: 8796e246e01b60e822fe45ac53102fdd What do you get?

      • GTIguy

I get the same. I downloaded from the mirror and coming up as 203MB. I thought I saw on Twitter at one point that it was 212MB.

        • j3nitti

I just flashed it to my GN, it is pretty smooth

          • GTIguy

I just finished downloading from the link in the OP and it has a different sum. Coming up as: 6CAE8ECCF48E3139E0C2B31D09049C20
            From mirror: 8796e246e01b60e822fe45ac53102fdd

  • Patrick Flanigan

I’ve been using BB for a while and this is a great ROM. I tried one of the earlier JB builds (not BB) for G-nex and it was not that great, BB is smooth like butter and absurdly fast. Well done Pete

  • duke69111

Has anyone tried this through boot manager?

  • Mark

    No maguro release 🙁

    • rodney11ride

Im spending way to much time on this forum… lol. according to petes twitter Peter Alfonso [email protected]
Maguro builds are next, I should have mine in the mail soon 🙂 12hrs ago

  • Artur Z.

Does anybody know if latitude is working on this build?

    • NexusPhan69

Someone answer this! It has not worked for me on any of the other JB roms. And I’ve tried a lot of JB roms.

      • Caleb Shahamat

Delete maps.apk from /system/app. Then redownload maps from the market.

        • Artur Z.

I did that with first Jb from and app was still installed .any ideas?

    • rodney11ride

I can confirm its loaded and im being asked to share with family and friends.. it went through and update screen. gps is running and location is locked….

      • Artur Z.

Can you actually see other.people on the map?

        • rodney11ride

i can see myself… lol i dont use the app so i dont have anybody connected to me. sorry

          • Artur Z.

At least you tried to help. Thanx

  • download is crawling right now. definitely gonna try this though. i had problems with other roms.

  • ddevito

Does anyone know if I’ll need to do a full wipe from Team Vicious V2??

    • rodney11ride

Im probably talking for many when i say i do a full wipe everytime i switch roms…

      • ddevito

I usually do, but one day we won’t have to :p – thanks!

      • Vance McAlister

I am also coming from Vicious v2, and I like to fully wipe, but I hate having to reinstall apps and set up each app again. Last time TiBU didn’t seem to work, so I had to spend hours to put everything back in place.

        • rodney11ride

I have been reading that TiBu is having issues restoring to JB. I just went to sleep and let them download for me….

          • Matt

Went from 4.0.4 to V3 and had no issues with TB pro. Tempted to try this one though from everything I’m reading.

      • Flat_Stanley

When you say full wipe, does that also wipe the data on the internal sdcard storage? I’m new to this so sorry for the basic question.

        • Connor Cowan

nope..does not wipe what’s on the internal sdcard storage ie camera photos, music etc

  • Bill Anderson

    Is there a Torrent?

  • elemeno

Installed this last night. I hadn’t tried any JB roms out there but when I saw his twitter post I couldn’t resist. Love it!

  • Lol oh man, by the time this thing gets done downloading, Pete will probably have an update out for this…lol we are so spoiled this brings me back to 56K dial up days…..oh Kazaa 🙂

  • br_hermon

What bootloader is everyone using with this rom? ICS or
    jakeday’s JB?

  • Kevin

The best nuff said. He didnt crank out a half assed jb rom and i commend him for it great job best jb rom out.

  • ddevito

    Is this 4.1 or 4.1.1?

    • rodney11ride

According to Petes twitter this is 4.1.1

      • ddevito

    • This is pure AOSP 4.1.1. The real deal.

      • ddevito

        sweet, thanks

  • Hothfox

I’ll probably download it once it includes little things like the power button mod, like he usually has in his ROMs. I’ve run his Gingerbread and ICS ROMs and like the fact that they’re basically stock with a few useful mods.

    • otter34

I agree. I need that mod as well as long press to skip music…without having it turn the screen on

      • Hothfox

I’m running Jelly Belly right now, and it has a power button mod you can flash. I’ll probably stick with this ROM for now until BB has a more refined release.

        • otter34

Cool, thanks. I’ve read a lot of complaints about that ROM so I think I’ll just be patient for a few more days. I was running axiom a couple weeks ago and am looking forward to running jb again. I’m also hoping the GPS issue is fixed

          • Hothfox

Curious what complaints you’ve heard? I know every ROM behaves differently on every phone, but I haven’t had any problems yet, and my GPS locks in like 15 seconds.

  • Frogskins

Pete does it again. Installed last night and smooth as butter

  • im not root yet, so if i root, is there a way when i do the wipe that i wont loose any app data, like game progress and settings?

    • msnight04

After rooting, use Titanium Backup to backup all of your apps and app data. The Pro version is definitely worth getting too as it will save a lot of time when restoring apps.

      • i just looked at it, it says that you need to be root to use it, so how can i make the backup before i root if the app wont work?

        • KG

it will be a long process, but if you really want to save the apps and data and you’re not unlocked and rooted, you can use WugFresh Nexus root toolkit (google it) to do that. It has the option to backup your apps on a locked/unrooted device. Once you do the backup, the tool will also allow you to do a one-click unlock/root of your device. This will factory reset it and wipe it clean, but you’ll be able to use the toolkit to restore the backup you made earlier. After that you can install and backup with TiBu for the ability to restore after flashing a ROM in the future. Hope this helps.

    • richcricketz

Also make sure you do a Nandroid just in case anything goes wrong. you can backup/restore inside Clockworkmod or in the “Rom Manager” app.

    • CuppaCoffee

Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro apps will serve you well.

      • Mudokon83

i did a app/date titanium backup, then tried to load it up with a new rom and it loaded all the apps but none would open or function. Any clue on what are the best settings for titanium backup of apps?

    • AnotherAndroidKid

The key is to already have unlocked your bootloader. If you’ve not already done that, you will have to wipe.

If you have, root it, then use TiBu as everyone is saying (i agree on paying for pro here). This will let you recover your app+data after. Then if needed, your app can update from market but still have your data.

Be aware, some games don’t keep data in an easy way to backup and could be lost.

    • MAKE SURE you do a reset from within Google Wallet before you wipe/ROM so you don’t brick your Secure Element!!

  • wickets

Im on razors 2.5 which is excellent…..the thing is why go through another wipe/download when 4.1.1 will be out and about any minute?

    • rodney11ride

Not sure how to explain but the BB Rom is 4.1.1 according to phone info in settings

      • Because AOSP source is 4.1.1, and Pete’s ROM is compiled from AOSP.

    • Because Verizon may take FOREVER to release an official OTA, and there are a few bug fixes and improvements in the 4.1.1 AOSP vs a 4.1 ROM based on the developer GSM preview (which Razors is).

      • wickets

Misunderstanding….DL headline was 4.1 ergo the question. At 4.1.1 it makes perfect sense to download…thanks

  • Attention – Everyone stop downloading the file!!!!!!

So there is more bandwidth for me! 🙂

  • Download is crawling. Anybody got a mirror?

  • I cant find a forum where this guy has the Jelly Bean hosted at..so im going to ask it here. How pure stock is it…besides the little enhancements here and there for performance, but visually and kernel all stock as it gets?

  • To me, you cant beat Pete’s Roms.

  • What does everyone use to back up all of their apps, data, pics, etc. so they can be restored after wiping?

    • aj

      Titanium backup works for me

      • Cool thanks. That is what I normally use but wanted to see if anyone uses anything else.

    • EvanTheGamer

Titanium Backup is the single most handy backup/restore tool for rooted users available in the Android Market, bar none. I suggest getting the paid version as it offers more features.

    • I use appextractor

  • I’m not getting 4G but I didn’t with my last ROM either. My location should be fine (Boston)… any fixes?

    • Also this seems to take quite some time to get on the google network (or whatever you call the blue bars vs grey bars). How could I speed this up?

  • rodney11ride

Simple and smooth. EVERYTHING works and NO issues for me. Flashed and restored all 115 apps and all run perfect. Thanks Pete

    • Does it say T-CDMA 64 or Verizon Wireless in the notification drawer? Also, how’s the boot up time, does it get stuck on the Google logo?

      • 3M4NU31

It got stuck once for me, so I pulled the battery & it booted back up just fine

    • br_hermon

Which bootloader are you using? ICS or jakeday’s?

      • rodney11ride

Im not sure… stock? ive never installed a boot loader so i guess its ICS

  • EvanTheGamer

So ya all would totally suggest this Bugless Beast 4.1 ROM? Never used any of his ROMS before, so yeah, just asking.

    • rodney11ride

Yes its a plain (no fluff) Rom with a few tweaks like the above describes.

      • EvanTheGamer

        Right, okay. Thanks!

Any suggestions for a ROM(with JB) with all the bells and whistles, but doesn’t slow down my G-Nex?

        • rodney11ride

No… But when AOKP, CM10, and Liquid come out id check those out if you want all the bells and wistles

          • EvanTheGamer

            k, thanks man!

  • Detonation

Holy slow download link batman. Any mirrors?

    • No kidding

      • Well im going to go to lunch and hopefully when i get back it will be done downloading.

    • rodney11ride

Yeah there is a mirror on rootzwiki prob a few pages from the end…

      • Detonation
        • Dang now that mirror is getting bombarded!!! AAAHHHHHHHH lol

        • pezjono

Thank you! MUCH faster than original link.

        • Jose Calderon

that was fast download. It only took 5min with my nexus. Installing now.

  • Southrncomfortjm

Going to give a few different Roms a run this weekend. Currently using VanirBean V 8.1 and like it alot, though I had to flash my own fix for the GPS lock issue.
Probably going to try Bugless Beast, Jelly Belly… and anyone recommend a third or fourth? Looking to test roms that will boost performance v. boost battery.

  • 3M4NU31

Had this since last night & its smoother than any other JB rom I’ve tried!

    • rodney11ride

      Same here!

    • br_hermon

Are you using it with jakeday’s JB bootloader?

      • 3M4NU31

I haven’t messed with the bootloader. I did a full wipe from his last ICS build & it works perfectly

  • Best dev out there. Patiently waiting for his crespo4g build.

  • are gapps included?

    • rodney11ride

      Yes they are

    • Yes.

    • haha

lol, guess you missed that part of the description in the blog above? hahaha

  • TheWenger

    This vs. Jelly Belly?

    • C-Law

yeah that’s what I’m wondering. Just installed jelly belly v3.1 coming from vanirbean. Very happy with jelly belly v3.1 and am looking forward to AOKP when it catches up, but when I had my og droid, I always used Pete’s roms

    • Kyle

I can’t decide. I have Jelly Belly 3.1 right now, but I loved Pete’s ROMS on my OG Droid

      • I dumped Jelly Belly. That dev seems to break things more often than he fixes them. He adds too much and breaks too much.

  • Downloaded it last night & like every Bugless Beast I’m loving it. Audio is superb. 🙂 Glad to also see chrome as the default browser the way it should be.

  • kervation

After DL’ing this last night I can attest that this ROM is smooth as silk and as stable as you’ll ever find. I wanted a pure Aosp stock build and I was waiting on Pete’s ROM and he delivered the goods.

    • A lot of the AOSP JB ROMS are not letting you download Youtube from the play store…can you confirm on BB ROM

      • rodney11ride

I am downloading you tube vids from BB. no problem here. I did read this in the forum and saw a flashable fix i believe…

        • thanks for the reply

      • Whyteboyello1

YouTube downloaded fine with this rom

    • br_hermon

Did you keep your ICS bootloader or use jakeday’s JB bootloader?

      • kervation

if jakeday’s has the “X” then that is the one I have

        • zepfloyd

The X is the new JB boot animation, nothing to do with the bootloader.

          • kervation

Sorry about that, thought he was talking about the boot ani.

      • AnotherAndroidKid

What do i do to flash this? Just move it into /sdcard/ and flash the zip in recovery like a rom?

        • br_hermon

To be honest, I’m not really sure. I was asking before I even began the whole process so I had everything I needed to know first. I can tell you though I installed BB without messing with the bootloader and it works perfectly. Pete actually requested a link to the bootloader from me. He never responded to what I sent him but he did say later on that “we don’t have a jb bootloader” That might mean he doesn’t have it, or an official one doesn’t exist. Either way installing on the ICS bootloader hasn’t given me or others problems. Of course, YMMV.

  • HomerJ

    Another masterpiece from Pete!!

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    Liquid Vicious V5… Perfect.

    • I liked it a lot but got some random restarts. Booting as BB right now

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Hmmm… haven’t noticed that yet… but I did only jump to V5 last night. Did see the random reboot on V2.

  • I haven’t used one of Pete’s ROMs since i had a D1, and they were always good. Going to have to try this one out tonight

    • T4rd

Same here. I remember his Bugless Beauty (stock clock) ROMs too. They
were my primary ROMs until Chevy’s Simply Stunning came out. I wish
Pete would get back into making feature-rich ROMs as well as
stock/stable ROMs too though. I’ve been spoiled by all the
customization that Liquid and CM provide.

      • KleenDroid

Ha… I also was a Beast and Beauty fan that fell victim to Chevy roms. I enjoyed what Chevy did back then and I’m surprised that he has not been a player with newer phones like the Nexus.

    • Droid_Junky

I pulled my OG Droid out of my desk drawer the other day. Still running Bugless Beast on it. Don’t use it for much but it still runs great.

  • jcorf

How would we go about downloading the offline speech recognition package in Google Search settings?

    • google now > settings button at the bottom >voice > download offline speech recognition

      • jcorf

        Seems logical, thanks.

      • Gus

        Oops. Didn’t see your reply.

    • Right, that’s what I want to know. Where is this?

    • Gus

Google Now>>Menu Button>>Settings>>Voice>>Download offline speech recognition

  • Vince

Can someone verify whether or not wipe is necessary? I’d love to be able to just update without having to backup & restore.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

If it’s a different ROM then you’d wipe unless you want a disaster on your hands…

      • Dylan Bunnell

        What about Vicious to BB?

        • Will Gardner

I always wipe unless I’m upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM that’s on my phone, and even then, only if the versions are pretty close together. It’s your choice, but if you run into ANY problems with the ROM, you have to assume it’s because of not wiping first and don’t clog up the forums with your problems until you’ve wiped and re-flashed.

    • T4rd

I do full wipes between flashing any new ROM, even incremental updates. It’s worth it just so you don’t have to worry if that random FC is due to an app or actual system instability. If you use Titanium Backup, it’s way too easy to restore data, so there’s really no reason not to wipe.

  • 4n1m4L

Pete! Good to see he’s still devving

  • htowngtr

    Giving P3’s implementation a try now…
