Which iOS 6 Features From Android Will Reinvent Smartphones This Morning?

In case you were wondering (wait, why would you be?), Apple’s developer conference, WWDC, kicks off this morning in San Francisco at the Moscone Center. During their opening keynote, everyone expects them to introduce iOS 6 and all sorts of new features that will forever change the way smartphones work (sarcasm much?). As you may recall from last year, iOS 5 apparently did the same thing, however, anyone who has used an Android phone over the last 3-4 years knows that much of those newly introduced features were standard fare from day 1 on this platform. You know things like, notifications, OTA updates, tabbed browsing, an IM client, etc.

So with this iOS 6 business about to happen, let’s have some fun with it. What Android features are we going to see? Any chance that Apple introduces something new or is it going to be to take Siri out of beta, which will be followed by an extra 5 Zooey Deschanel commercials per hour? Reinvent, people!

11:25Dan Moren: Choose “send a message” and you get pre-made options (or custom messages) to send.
11:25Dan Moren: Slide up a control on an incoming call, and you can reply with a message or remind yourself to call person back later.
11:25Dan Moren: Probably been in a meeting where you got a phone call, and wish you could quickly text person or remind yourself to call them back later.

sound familiar? (read the messages backwords if you didnt know)

  • greeknasty

well i see a feature added that i wish android had…do not disturb and allow only certain people to call you during the DND time…would love to see that..and no i dont want to download an app for that.

    • SeanBello

you want it, but you don’t want it? lol

      • greeknasty

why the hell would i have to download a battery draggin app to do a simple feature like that?..get real bro

        • SeanBello

instead of a battery dragging app that’s pre-installed?

          • greeknasty

not sure what your trying to imply but last i checked this isnt a feature built into the phone app is it?

          • SeanBello

no, but if it’s active it runs all the time in the background constantly, hence draining battery. also, this has been in AOKP for awhile (minus the exception function)

    • http://twitter.com/ineedadiSPENCER Spencer Ward

      like quiet hours?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1469070004 Cory Dobak

I know for a fact I can do that with my Razr with Motorolas Smart Actions.

  • wickets

Do not disturb???? oh my, thats rich

  • iKing_5

They’ll stop the approval process of apps so malware can grow by more than 400% per year and delay updates for the vast majority of their users by more than 10 months…

  • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ TechRumblings

Direct access to a shard area of the file system for any file type would be a miracle-awesome thing for iOS. Gotta love Android for that!

  • SeanBello

LMAO…Siri button on steering wheels! stock has to be dropping

  • Joey Bourgart

I think more about features from other Google products also, not just Android.

  • SeanBello

pretty easy to get 80% of your customers on iOS5 when you haven’t changed anything hardware design-wise in 3 yrs and you only make 1 phone/yr.

  • thatsspecific

Now when you go to unlock the phone there’s a lock and you can drag it around to either a unlocked lock or a icon of a camera to in lock the phone.

  • Acosand

A patent suit button on the bottom of the iPhone 5?

  • Cam

“Apple Brown Out”. The phone detects when you are ‘indisposed’ and automatically sets you away in all connected clients.

  • peezwizz

the new mbp starts at 2200 bucks… YIKES

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=797475274 Nadeem Najib Kizi

It’s going to take Siri out of beta just like you said. Tim Cook said that in an interview just like 1-2 weeks ago…but again, Siri was stolen from Android and they just improved it.

    • DrewNusser

It like where you’re going, but it wasn’t stolen from Android nor is it any better. Voice controls on a phone have been around forever, and I actually like to be able to say “navigate to Subway” or “play ….. on Pandora” and have it work.

  • SeanBello

“re-invent”…probably the most annoying term ever. you can’t make something for the 1st time twice!

  • droidman101

New macbooks, Mountain Lion, and iOS 6.

  • http://twitter.com/BodaciousBryce Bryce

Android did it! Android did it!

  • Tim Swann

Switching between apps will be silky smooth in iOS6…but Android has had that for almost 6 months now…I guess apple is reinventing multi-tasking

  • jakymiwm

I bet they will announce that Apple and Oracle will merge and the new name will be iTroll!
Or, they are having a baby called Troll.

  • Dan

    exporting contacts lol

  • droidman101

and new maps is getting announced as we speak. turn by turn navigation

    • SeanBello

no way! turn by turn navigation?! amazing! LOL

      • Tim Swann

        don’t you mean iMazing lol

  • sk3litor

Getting sued by apple. Oh wait…

  • Kris Brandt

I bet you Facial Recognition Unlock will end up being one of the new features.

  • Nemo Hoes

Apple is taking shots at ICS off the top lol

    I’m betting widgets ;-)

Just read this on the Engadget Liveblog. Funny and True

TIM STEVENS One @bheater is predicting Ice Cream Sandwich on the iPhone 3GS, which is pure insanity.TIM STEVENSWe all know the 3GS can’t handle that kind of firepower.

  • droidman101

I never got why people would ever pay $1,600 for these things, it’s not like Google I/O where you at least get tons of free stuff.

    • Sven Enterlein

Is that just for the few hours of presentations and then playing with the gadget for a short time? Or is there an actual multi-day conference attached?

      • droidman101

Few hours then I think they get a few minutes of hands on.

        • Google

its a multi day conference with developer seminars going over the new APIs and feature. You should learn what you are talking about before making dumb comments.

          • droidman101

I thought he meant the keynote

    • MikeKorby

      comes with a jacket too…

      • droidman101

Ooh. A cool WWDC jacket! Must cost THOUSANDS of dollars retail.

        • MikeKorby

Well the zippers are made of aluminum, and its called a smart jacket. When the jacket is zipped up, it automatically hides whatever it says on your shirt.

  • droidman101

Magical, unbreakable, unfathomable Chimp Glass that allows you to slide your finger across the surface like Kristy Yamaguchi’s blades on Olympic ice and also instantly files a lawsuit against Motorola with each swipe.

For the beautifulness that is that prediction, it’s Kristi*

  • Nemo Hoes

I love the Android Community! We are so Ruthless lol
    Hashtag AndroidArmy

  • Sven Enterlein

I don’t think that Apple actually steals all that much from the Android community directly. I have the feeling that most useful changes/upgrades/new features come from the jailbreak community. Not sure where they get it from but it is amazing to see all the features that you needed a jailbreak for pop up as “innovations” in the Apple-approved iOS.

    • http://www.gizmoninja.com/ Tabe

So, the devs who develop features that require jailbreak steal features from Android and Apple steals them from the jailbreak community..?

      • Aaron

        Exactly!? Uh… If A = B and B = C then A = C?

        • Sven Enterlein

That’s why I specifically wrote “directly”

          • CopierITGuy

So I “acquired” this car that my buddy, Steve, stole from this other guy, Tim. It’s still Tim’s car that I have acquired!

It’s this kind of “reasoning” that keep the sheeple coming back for the latest, greatest iSomething. It really makes me nauseated! Just come up with something new again. At least try to keep it interesting.

          • Sven Enterlein

You simply don’t want to understand the point I’m making… Apple is stealing their ideas from somewhere. I don’t care if it’s from Android or someone else. Point is, they DO NOT INNOVATE as much as the iSheep claim. Not sure how your car example works in the legal system so I can’t comment.

          • CopierITGuy

I agree. Although, I don’t think they’ve innovated ANY with the last 3 iterations of the iPhone. The only thing good they’ve contributed in the last 3 years is a screen with a high resolution. Oooooh! Wow! Nobody else would’ve brought that to the market! Thank you, Mr. Apple! We’re forever indebted to you!

  • CHRIS42060

I have some insider information that they will be adding a new feature to the iPhone. It will be a series of 10 numbers (0 – 9) and the symbols # and * right on the touchscreen. By pressing them in a unique sequence the phone will connect to someone in particular (if you know that person’s specific sequence of numbers). My understanding is that they are already working on a patent for this revolutionary technology.

    • droidman101

The next advancement will be adding in support for sending letters as well.

      • michael

Yes I believe steve jobs’ lawyers did prove he was a direct descendant of alexander gram bell, and every phone manufacturer and company still owes apple money.

    • slops

i see what you did there, and i laughed, quietly, to myself

  • http://twitter.com/branshaw09 Brandon Shaw

How about they simply start with a 4G phone? When they announce this I’m sure it will be spun off as the first of its kind.

    • slops

i was waiting for this.. Apple patents 4g

      • TheTruthSquad

Apple patents the letters G, H, I, Q and A. Google has to change their name to CanDtoid.

  • Steven Roy

Have you ever had trouble getting your separate GPS navigation device to work properly? We thought it should be as easy to use as Siri. So we made it that easy. Introducing with iOS 6… iMaps.

Oh by they way… it’s free.

  • droidman101

    http://www.bgr.com/2012/06/11/apple-itv-rumors-motion-control-touch-remote/
So, basically a Samsung smart TV….AND a tablet remote.

  • EC8CH

Honestly NFC, because I’d like to see some traction behind getting NFC payments available at more retailers in the US. iOS adoption would certainly help that.

But I see you trollin’ K.

  • SGMD1

I’ve been browsing iPhone forums and it’s almost sad how nearly everyone posting their hopes for iOS6 wants to see a feature that already exists on Android. These people are totally oblivious.

    • DrewNusser

They’re not oblivious. Most of them know that those things are on Android, but they refuse to jump ship because Android is icky to them. They’re sincerely afraid of malware/bugs/lag/whatever else iBloggers have filled their feeble minds with. They actually use these things as an excuse to pass on things they want like widgets/bigger screens/LTE/better batteries. It’s that same attitude that let’s Apple keep skimping on specs so they can keep those margins high.

  • fajitatt

Best title for a DL post ever!

  • Aaron

“By moving the power button to the left .00005 mm, they created a warp time flux that will allow the iPhone to turn on .001 seconds faster than android! Thats 100% faster! I think?”

    • Lord_Vader1941

I just spit my tasty beverage onto my keyboard whilst reading your comment.

      • Aaron

I hope that is a good thing?

        • DrewNusser

When is it NOT a good thing to spill liquid all over your electronics?

          • Aaron

I ment i hope he thought it was funny lol

  • Stewie

A revolutionary new skin to go atop iOS, they shalt call it:
    “AppleBlur”!

        iBlur-u-out-Android…..

    • Lord_Vader1941

      Apple HurDur…

  • digsoreos

Random reboots? OS fragmentation? Seriously though, anything that pushes the envelope to make all smartphones even better can’t hurt.

    • PC_Tool

Apple already has both of those. I know, I know…you’re just trolling. ;-)

“Seriously though, anything that pushes the envelope to make all smartphones even better can’t hurt.”

Truer words… I honestly don’t care (more than for entertainment purposes, of course) who did what “first”…As long as the march of progress continues, good for us.

      • digsoreos

If by trolling you mean being interested in the development of all smartphones and not believing one is the magical unicorn to rule all others, then I guess I was trolling. ;) There are good things about each OS and things each can learn from the other. Is that really such a bad thing?

        • PC_Tool

By trolling I mean calling out one product for a failure that permeates all products in that market….and it was a joke.

Oh, and if you read my post carefully, I actually agreed with you. But, hey…argue away, man.

          Defensive much?

          • digsoreos

I did read your first reply carefully and got past your joke. Was just clarifying my original joke which may have been lost through your troll comment. No harm, no foul, man. No need to argue about it, right?

          • PC_Tool

No problem. I was simply clarifying the clarification of the joke that I made about the joke that you made, and that then, for the purpose of clarity, clarified.

            Um…

            …or …something. ;-)

  • eddieonofre

New ultra designed back cover unbreakable… not like our last design

    • droidman101

      Kevlar back, curved screen.

      • eddieonofre

And then patent the curved screen because is an apple innovation

  • T4rd

Install apps from third parties..? Lol, yeah right.. I’m sure that will forever be exclusive to jailbroken iDevices =p.

One of the few key things they haven’t ripped from Android is Widgets, so I’m guessing those will make an appearance in some form or another.

  • MrSteve920

Hopefully multitasking, and not the piece of crap system they have now.

  • Noles419

I dunno about you guys, but I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Zooey Deschanel… I don’t care what she’s advertising!

    • DrewNusser

So it’s just me who wants to punch her in the face every time she asks “Is that rain?” when she’s 5 feet away from the window? With that one comment, all of her quirky, sarcastic, lovable and hot roles got thrown out the window and are now drenched and ruined, because yes, that is effing rain.

      • Drew

No, it’s not just you, but if you’re wanting to punch her in the face with your FIST, well, that my friend is where you and I differ.

        • DrewNusser

          Haha, either or, really.

      • Manny

        Yes.

  • Lord_Vader1941

Maybe they will inform everyone that it isn’t actually the iPhone 5, but it’s actually the 6th installment of the iPhone line….

    • Chris

      The NEW iPhone…. whatever

      • Lord_Vader1941

        Now that is revolutionary!
