Motorola Unveils a Handful of RAZR-esque Devices for China With On-screen Nav Keys, Potential RAZR HD Candidates

The Samsung Galaxy SIII and its arrival in the U.S. is a huge deal, but for whatever reason, I get the feeling that everyone is also eagerly awaiting the DROID RAZR HD by Motorola. While most details have avoided us thus far, the original RAZR and RAZR MAXX have been big enough successes that an HD variant will likely draw in some long time Moto fans. Thanks to an event held by Motorola China, we have fresh pictures of 3 devices coming in June that give us a bit of an idea as to what we can expect with the RAZR HD here in the States.

Currently codenamed the “DROID Fighter” and headed to Verizon, we have only seen one picture of the device at this point. It looks exactly like the phones you are seeing above though, with on-screen navigation keys, same RAZR styling, and Ice Cream Sandwich. The source that took these pictures did claim that these phones only have qHD screens, but that is sure to change when the phone arrives here or that “HD” tag on the end of its name won’t make any sense. The thickness is right around 9mm, which would lead us to believe that Motorola is packing in its 3300mAh battery. Other than that, it’s the same wide body, hump on the top, and kevlar backing.

Is the RAZR HD your next phone?

Cheers kirabee!

I’ll likely get this IF Googlorola makes the bootloader unlockable. If not, it’s the s3 for me I think. If I even stick with vzw after they limit data…

There are a lot of if’s at the moment for me :-)

  • beyedup

Same here! My Droid X is good, but I would like to upgrade to an LTE phone. The MAXX is very tempting. But if this RAZR HD comes out , that would be great. That is, If Verizon and Motorola can get their heads outta their asses and release the phone I don’t see what could be wrong with the camera in the Maxx. If has the same or even an upgraded 8 megapixel as the X, it should take really good pics and vids.
Anyway, I just hope they will release it soon. I’m a big fan of Moto. I think they a have a good solid quality line that is very durable as well. But if it takes too long I will settle for the Maxx.

Is it just me or is this design played out? come on motorola… step up your game your going to try and release this next to the GS3… Google… get in there and shake things up!

  • JMonkeYJ

motorola heard you guys like bezels, so they put a bezel around your bezel!

  • Knlegend1

Too be perfectly honest, none of these phones look all that great. Maybe they are just prototypes but boy I wish they’d make the screen take up more space. Don’t get me wrong I love Moto’s design but these phones look tacky. If these phones are any indication I’d go with the Maxx now.

  • LordStickMax

the one in the middle looks more like a droid X then a razr interesting. i am rocking a Dx now and its nice but i want a 4g phone. i wanted to avoid the contract upgrade nightmare i see coming so i got a Galaxy nexus off ebay. i’ve been waying for a razr HD but had to do something. always loved moto and although i like the maxx im not up for an upgrade yet.

  • Ruben Ali Fuenmayor

The one in the middle looks like its heading the hidden leaf.

  • Dan

If they put a 5.3″ screen on it I’d bite.

    Just like the Droid X2 and the Droid 3, expect Verizon to release a re-hashing of this phone with ICS. Call it the Droid Razr Maxx Plus or something. {{-_-}}

  • http://twitter.com/kanagadeepan Kanaga Deepan N

Razr is my current phone… Razr_MAXX my next, if MAX_HD doesn’t come for 2 months…

  • arthur2142

Ugh…Sell my RAZR for $250 now and buy the Maxx through AmazonWireless for $160 (after promo discount), guaranteeing I keep my unlimited data…

    OR

Wait for the RAZR HD to come out, pay $300+ and risk losing unlimited data. Oh and the RAZR will probably drop in value to about $100…

    • http://www.facebook.com/objection89 Miguel Angel Portela

Go for the Maxx. Its a fantastic phone. I have it now and also intend to switch to the Razr HD. Luckily, the resale value on the Maxx is relatively high.

  • SolipsisticPsychologist

The real lesson with Motorola is, as most I’m sure know by now, if they release a new phone don’t buy it. Because in an insane, short amount of time, there will already be 1 to 2 upgraded versions of that exact phone for sale. The new Motorola Droid Terminator just came out? Nope, skip it. Wouldn’t you rather wait a very short time for at least two iterations of it, and get the new bombastic Droid Terminator Pro HD XL Ultimate Maximum Extended Director’s Cut Multicolor Edition? Hell, you only have to wait three weeks after the original Terminator was released.

    • John

Yeah I know people like to say that, but I don’t really think it’s the truth. Sure the Razr came out soon after the Bionic, but only because the Bionic was delayed for what seemed like an eternity. Even so i saw blurrycam pics of the Razr weeks before the Bionic went onsale.
The only time what you’re describing has ever actually happened is with the Maxx, and if you buy your phones from a good 3rd party retailer with much longer return policies, then that really shouldn’t even affect you that much.

  • Matthew Merrick

On the picture of the back of the 3 phones, the center one looks just like my dad’s DX.

hm…. i can see that coming to Verizon as the DroidX3

  • biker bill

Yes . Come with it I have 2 upgrades to burn

  • Jack Landers

That link cheng posted has a 1750ma battery….. I have a Maxx and a Nexus, I want the battery life of my Maxx on my Nexus in the same size phone. :)

  • LP

I’m on the DroidX to since launch day, and while this phone has been great (never ever had a problem, never took it to the store, never ever replaced, Rom support), I’m ready to look at something different. The MotoBlur WOULD bore me, i need the S3 in my life soon. I couldn’t imagine buying a new phone and continuously looking at virtually the same set-up.. (*PHONE)

  • Ron Perlman’s Jaw

None of them look like they have the Maxx battery.

  • Detonation

As much as a like the freedom of my nexus, I’ve had more frustrations with it than I ever had with my Droid X. My phone needs to work properly as a phone first, then I’ll worry about unlocked bootloaders, etc. Was thinking about switching to a Razr Maxx, but I think I’ll wait for details on the Maxx HD first.

  • http://www.facebook.com/timothy.warne Tim Warne

Hope its the middle phone that’s the Razr HD, and the other two look like maybe one will be a bionic2.

  • Frood

I’m not so sure any of these are the RAZR HD since they all appear to have an 8MP camera. The RAZR HD should be getting a 13MP camera with two flash LEDs.

Also the front speaker-phone grills on two of the phones don’t jive with the DROID look, the speaker-phone will probably be in the back of the phone.

I normally HATE motorola’s hardware designs because they look like a gothic high school kid drew them, but I really like the device in the middle. It is minimal and classy, with what appears to be nice materials used.

  • MikeCiggy

Seems with the indents in the back of all those phones that none are rocking the battery of the MAXX. They should just make one version Droid RAZR HD that includes the large battery instead of a big battery variation a few months after release.

  • antony3322

It’s called “RAZR V”, really not “RAZR HD” and it has three verison:
    XT885 – International GSM/WCDMA verison
MT887 – TD-SCDMA verison, for China Mobile only
XT889 – CDMA verison, for China Telecom

    • http://www.facebook.com/antony3322 Antony Cheng

        Shows only a 1750mA battery :(

    • http://ian.cazabat.com IanCaz

If that’s the case, then looks like we’ll get the one on the left, without the circle logo on the bottom? I could deal with that!

      • antony3322

        Yes =)

      • http://profiles.google.com/johnthacker John Thacker

No, because the one on the left is the XT885. WCDMA is a name for 3G GSM (UMTS). That’s not what we’d get on Verizon. The one on the right is the XT889, which uses a CDMA radio fairly similar to Verizon’s 3G. I don’t see any mention of LTE on any of these.

  • http://ian.cazabat.com IanCaz

I’m hoping for the Maxx HD to be my next phone!

I’m just hoping that this phone hits the US before Verizon’s family data plans do!
The middle one in the pic looks like the “old school” moto devices, so I can’t imagine that being the Maxx HD.

    • Hocky

They all appear to be the same thickness which means that they are probably all packing the same battery as the Maxx. This being the case, I doubt they we will see a Maxx variant of this device seeing as it’s already ‘Maxx’d out’.

  • Gil

My DroidX is on it’s last legs and I’m due for an upgrade, so I’m hoping this phone comes out soon. I’d rather wait for this one instead of just getting the Maxx, especially if this will be out sooner rather than later.

    • http://twitter.com/Bailers Bailers

I’m in exactly the same place as you are. On my X the headphone port is slowly going out, and there are other problems that even a factory reset didn’t solve. I almost purchased the Maxx but would really like to get the HD. However the family plans might push me to make a decision before then. I’d much rather have unlimited 4G than the Droid HD.

    • http://twitter.com/j1d10t j1d10t

Same here! I’m ready to upgrade my X and would rather get the Razr HD than the Maxx, or the S III. Come on Moto! I want this phone now! lol

    • FadingRadio

me too. though i’m having the same dilemma as @twitter-20294466:disqus. plus there’s that $40 credit this week that cancels out the $30 charge i’m going to get for upgrading…

the other thing driving me crazy is how much it would hurt paying $299 for a phone whose main draw is a better screen and camera. RAZR should be free, RAZR MAXX should be 99 and HD should release at 199. dont pretend that the tech inside these phones is brand new vzw.

      * bracing myself for RAZR iteration jokes ad nauseam *

    • Micah Gemmell

same boat. I need a phone that grips me like the X did, so far, nothing i’ve seen really does that. the razr maxx hd or the sg3 are my candidates, depending on when they release… I may just fall back on the g-nex…

    • BigRed4X15

Not that I wouldn’t want the HD screen, the Maxx is a great phone. I have had it for a couple months without a single issue. This is my 4th android phone (OG Droid->Droid 2->Droid Charge->Maxx) and it is by far the best. One thing I notice is that I have never had to restart the phone because it was bogged down or jammed up. So if you get forced into a Maxx to save your data plan, you are getting a quality phone.

      • LordStickMax

damn boy you just getting phones every year? must be leap frogging your family upgrades or your a rich SOB. not complaining, just jealous. i’ve been rocking my droid x and loving it. really want a razr hd though.

      • Killer4247

Ive gone from Droid OG -> Droid X-> Droid Charge-> iPhone 4S-> Droid Charge (reactivated). How do you like the Maxx compared to the Charge. My main complaints on the Charge is how cheap it feels, how easy it is to damage/dent the plastic, And the crappy battery life (can’t make it through a day with moderate use). Although I wasn’t planning on upgrading, the news of Verizon pushing me down from unlimited if I upgrade later made me consider using my available upgrade now? So how do you like the MAXX coming from the Charge?

      • http://www.facebook.com/objection89 Miguel Angel Portela

        I agree. I’ve had

        G1>Cliq>Droid>Droid Incredible>Droid X>Droid 3>Fascinate>Razr>Razr Maxx

Of those, I’ve only loved the OG, Fascinate (arguable the best) and the Maxx. My only beef with the Maxx is the camera. Maybe I’m picky but its just horrible. The screen is perfect. Hell, the whole phone is perfect, but that camera.

    • http://twitter.com/DustinK27 Dustin K

Doing the same exact thing, but I am just hoping I can grab one of these before they try to make me give up my unlimited data!! My DX has had a mind of it’s own the past few months, restarting by itself and freezing up :/

      • Gil

Exactly what mine has been doing. I’ve done so many more battery pulls in the past month than in the past year and a half that I’ve had the phone.

    • feztheforeigner

That middle phone looks a little like a Droid X3. Maybe that’s your next phone! :p

    • vernon

i was in the same boat but just gave in yesterday and bought a nexus off of amazon

    • snark

I have all of you beat. I still have the original Motorola Droid that I got in 2010 and am looking to upgrade. This phone seems like the best option of all of them. I wanted the Galaxy Nexus S, but the form factor, 5MP camera(my current phone has a 5MP camera, sheesh!) and the inability to transfer data directly onto the phone’s storage ruined it for me. This one has a good form, 13MP camera and ICS. Bingo! Can’t wait for them to release this one!

  • Butters619

If a Razr HD variant actually comes to AT&T, then probably. Doubt that is going to happen though, so I’ll just have to enjoy my One X.

  • K Y

is it just me or do NONE of these look like the Maxx version?

    • http://www.facebook.com/objection89 Miguel Angel Portela

No, none of them do. They have that weird bump in the camera. Also, is it just me or do these devices look…cheap? I mean, look at the edges and near the headphone jack. They don’t look like Motorola’s usual build quality at all.

  • spickle

i could care less about these phones but the only thing i like about them is the on screen nav keys don’t have that black background under them. hate that i can’t take that off of mine.

    • RedPandaAlex

Wonder what those look like when you’re actually in an app.

    • LiterofCola

      *couldn’t care less

    • FortitudineVincimus

The phrase is “I COULDN’T care less” not “I COULD care less”. If you could care less, then it means you could care less than you already do and if so, it makes the statement useless. But your trying to say you care so little, you COULDN’T care any less than you do now.

  • RW-1

I think I’ll wait until anything remaining from the Jha Tools Reign is gone. It will be interesting to see what comes down the line afterwards, but for now … nope.
Moto will have to do quite a lot to win back ex-customers like me.

    • RedPandaAlex

Yeah, having the nexus, I’ll probably be getting another phone around the holidays of 2013. By then, Moto might be worth looking into again.

    • sc4fpse

      Jha Tool? Ahahahahaha, love it!

  • SugaShane

Am I the only one who doesn’t like the aesthetics of these phones at all?

    • Captain_Doug

I for sure don’t. Way too wide, ginormous bezel, it just looks dated.

  • http://twitter.com/ErikPalau Erik Palau

I don’t care about this. All I want is Inc4G news; namely it is for sure coming out this Thursday since it’s blown multiple rumored dates already. I had to buy a gay palm pre+ just to lock in unlimited data last year with Verizon and this is the first 4″ phone to come out with reasonable specs. I can’t take it anymore…

    • LiterofCola

If you don’t care about it, then feel free not to comment on an article about it.

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Wow, the second one is really nice. Pl0x come to the UK :D

  • Aaron

The middle one I hope. Reminds me of my old droid x.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

    These actually look nice…

  • LiterofCola

At this point, with ICS and the global “switch” being flipped, I’ll probably be sticking with the Razr. Especially since it looks like I’ll be having to pay full retail on any new device, it’ll have to be a significant improvement from the original.

    • FortitudineVincimus

Yeah, that global mention in the last day also has me eying the RAZR more than the SGS3 since I do travel in Europe yearly. it is just an added bonus to consider as you get a more universal phone.

    • paul_cus

I agree, if it’s just a bump in the screen and camera I’ll just be good with the RAZR I have.

  • azndan4

    Ugly

  • Devilsephiroth

Wow that’s a lot of real estate not being used for a screen . A 5 inch possible yet only about 4.3. Probably needs the room for the verizon logo …

    • Captain_Doug

The Eluga power is a 5″ phone and is only .05″ wider and the One X is .04″ bigger. I’d say that’s negligible. The Razr could definitely have a 4.7-5″ screen… OR a lot less bezel.

    • http://www.facebook.com/objection89 Miguel Angel Portela

The bezel isn’t really that bad. I actually prefer the Bezel on the Maxx.

  • moelsen8

well at least moto is doing a smart move here and including onscreen buttons vs. htc and sammy’s stupid hardware keys with ICS (= legacy menu button ugliness)

    • RedPandaAlex

I think HTC elected to go with hardware buttons because they’re not using super AMOLED. A black background on a super AMOLED screen blends in with the bezel around the device to the point where you don’t even really notice the buttons are part of the screen. A black background on an LCD screen looks kind of grey.

Sammy probably just didn’t want to change things too much from their previous successful phones.

  • Greg Morgan

I like the middle one, kinda looks like a Dx. I still don’t know what Moto’s obsession with the hump is? HTC and Samsung have been able to make awesome cameras inside of thin phones without a hump for a while now.

    • RedPandaAlex

I like the hump. I think it makes it harder to drop the phone. If it slips the hump catches in your hand.

      • paul_cus

You’re right. Totally makes the phone easier to handle.

    • FortitudineVincimus

The hump allows bulky hardware to fit in the 1 area that needs it and yet keep the slim design throughout. it is not a visual thing just for fun, it has a purpose and I would take that over bulk all over the phone just to keep the phone profile even throughout.

    • FortitudineVincimus

Yep, for design aesthetic, the middle one wins for me also

    • Butters619

It’s either a camera hump or a camera nipple (a la HTC) lol.

    • LiterofCola

Yeah, but if you look at the Nexus, it also has a minor hump on the bottom of the phone. I think it’s a nice touch to both phones.

  • FortitudineVincimus

My next phone is either the SGS3 or the newest verison of the RAZR MAXX… and I hope it is damn soon so I can get up to a 4G phone with my unlimited data before the new tier data crap hits. But I bet they will make sure to push the new data tiers before either phone drops so they force your hand.

    • http://ian.cazabat.com IanCaz

That’s what I’m afraid of too!

    • Apostrafee

You’re not gonna wait for better procs?
