Motorola Updates Timeline for Ice Cream Sandwich Rollouts – DROID RAZR and MAXX in Q2, Bionic and Others in Q3

droid ics upgrades

Within the next month and a half, owners of the DROID RAZR, RAZR MAXX and XOOM 3G/4G will have official Ice Cream Sandwich on there devices, straight from Motorola. Their timeline for updates was updated this morning, finally putting dates on the U.S. variants of many of Moto’s phones. The DROID Bionic, DROID 4, and XYBOARD tablets will all see updates by the end of Q3.

This newly updated list also confirms that the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3 for good. In other words, a couple of phones that have been around for less than a year are already done receiving support other than bug fixes.

Start the countdown.

Via:  Motorola

Cheers Captmilk, Mark and Kevin!

  • michael curtis

    What month does Q3 start?

    • Felix Wilbur

      July i believe

  • http://www.statsprofessor.org/ StatsProfessor

By that time I’ll probably have a Jelly Bean device anyway……

  • Bionic

Q3 for Bionic? What a bunch of total bullshitt. Ill believe it when i see it. My update is may of 2013. So i’ll get to enjoy ICS on my Bionic fo what? 8 months maybe? What a bunch of total BS.

  • spyro

no ics for droid 3? sad face v.v

  • Slappy Sam

What are the odds that the red-headed step child known as the Bionic gets a newer version of ICS than the NEXUS?

  • http://www.facebook.com/tzimmick Tyler Edwards Zimmick

Yay I’m so happy my bionic is getting upgraded to the best software about time I can’t wait for the web browsing experience… wait it says early Q 3 not the end of Q3

  • JSW25

    List is incomplete….

  • Kweb

Verizon is trying to wait to push out the updates until they set in place all capped data so they push an update while using your mobile network and use your data lol.

  • Darksthour

well its good to know that everyone who bought a droid razr or maxx that this is probably going to be the last update you will ever get. I have a Droid 3 and I don’t know why I even bother to look at these. I update my phone when AOKP has an update not when moto says “here some more blur!”I know for a fact that when the bionic gets ics someone will make it available to the Droid 3. They are the same damn phone lol. Just a little less memory in the phone with a keyboard. But untill then I’m ok with the better than stock experience on my phone.

  • David Rudometkin

    So early Q3 is Sept/Oct?

  • akazerotime

Need a little help here. Kellex, you say the 3G/4G XOOM, but I see no mention of MZ602.
I see MZ600 which was my XOOM before I sent it to Moto for my 4G upgrade. We just assuming here?

  • http://www.facebook.com/coreyvallejo Corey Vallejo

As if we needed another reason to never buy Motorola phones again.

  • Lipe

to droid life you posted a date for the Razr ota ICS update will be on May 23 so does still this date?

  • http://twitter.com/DeCrescenzo DeCrescenzo

At this point I’ll believe it when I get it and not a moment before.

  • Rob Schoenfeld

Personally I find the experience on my droid razr maxx to be pretty awesome. Most people don’t understand the difference between ICS and Gingerbread. They just want a solid reliable device that has good battery life. The Razr Maxx hits all of those marks.

  • Mario Lo

By Q3, I won’t even have the Bionic. Actually, by tonight I won’t have the Bionic. See ya.

  • duke69111

Waiting this long for the upgrade to ICS just seams pointless if its going to take this long. Holly Crap Motorola.

  • sneakerhead23

So basically its like a big f u! The ones that will b getting it won’t be seeing it til the next android is ready and the rest of us are screwed. I got a Droid x2 and think this is some BS

    • Erick

eh, I have an X2 as well, but frankly, I’m upgrading to the RAZR MAXX myself here just so I can lock down a new contract with a 4G phone. Unlimited is going anyways, so might as well lock down a 4G phone that has, or can get ICS here in the next month or two while you can.
Sucks, but it’s simply a way for either/both Verizon/Motorola to squeeze as many $$ from you as possible, while you’re trying to spend as little $$ as possible.

  • Knlegend1

2 products belong to At&t and if those updates come on time that would really say something about Verizon.

  • Diablo81588

Well at least it says “early” Q3 for the bionic.. :P

  • Liderc

I’m curious why we think a list from Moto is going to be followed?

We know Verizon still has to do their work after Motorola is finished, so tack on another 2-3 months to this list if you want to be realistic.

    • Buy This

It’s possible that the list was updated after those initial leaked updates (i.e. 904 for Bionic) were evaluated and then sent back by Verizon at which point Motorola reassessed its timeline to account for meeting Verizon’s standards.

      • Buy This

Edit: I meant in the way that 904 became 905. There may be early builds that have not been leaked but they surely go back and forth as they iron out the bugs and details.

  • Sp4rxx

Ironically while I was reading this article, the group Europe was playing “ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!” on Pandora ….

    Must be a sign!

  • Butters619

Woo Hoo! Q3 for my Atrix! Oh wait….I already sold that phone and moved on.

  • enigmaco

Between the Verizon screw job and the motorola screw job I just read I’m really contemplating even owning a smartphone. If it wasn’t for rooting I would thrown this phone out the window months ago.

  • MG_USMC

VZW IS NOW: THE EX WIFE. We’ll get in a commitment, then just as you get comfy with the unlimited plan, I’ll file for divorce and screw you on the prenup you made me sign. Then I’ll laugh all the way to the bank…..Thoughts?

    • bakdroid

Enjoy your days in court for breach of contract.

      • MG_USMC

That’s what it feels like they’re doing. I mean damn.

    • wtsamatta

I’m sure to be buying my phones from now on. Small price to pay to keep unlimited data. I use near 4gb/m now.

      • lovehate

I’m worried even if I buy my phone they will just throttle the hell out of me.wish at&t bought t Mobil so there was some one to compete with them

  • mustbepbs

Did they even have a reason for the DX2? It’s got dual core. It’s got enough RAM for ICS (well, maybe not blurred out ICS). I don’t get it. The phone has barely been out a year. Even worse for D3 users.

    • bakdroid

512MB ram is the reason for both the X2 and D3.

      • that guy

One v from HTC i think has 512 ram and single core will release with ICS

        • Diablo81588

It will run like garbage. Doesn’t matter though for that phone, as it’s considered low end anyway.

      • mustbepbs

Grrr. There are tons of devices that have 512MB of RAM that run ICS like a champ. They should at least have the courtesy to unlock the bootloader if they’re going to **** people over like this.

        • MicroNix

Anyone remember the article that Motorola was going to be concentrating more on their software than # of phones this year? More time dedicated to MotoBloat…just what we needed. #Nexus

          • mustbepbs

I don’t take Motorola statements seriously. They always find ways to go back on their word.

      • http://sam.abuelsamid.com Sam Abuelsamid

I’ve had ICS running on my D3 for 2 months and it now typically has 150 MB or more of free ram while it frequently ran out completely with the stock rom because of all the crapware that MOTO loads up at boot. Only rooting and freezing apps would get the free ram up to 70-80 MB. Again we can blame Moto and their craptastic software devs for this

    • enigmaco

Don’t remind me, me and my droid 3 got screwed like obama at a republican convention.

  • BrianWenger

That’s amazing. If independent devs can get working versions based on ICS source code working within a couple weeks, why does it take OEMs almost a year?

    • mustbepbs

Because they have to slap their skins all over it.

    • enigmaco

Because if people were able to update their old devices to ics they wouldn’t be interested in the new phones that comes preloaded with them. And we all know how money hungry verizon is.

      • mustbepbs

That is a very good point that I hadn’t thought of.

      • BrianWenger

Right, but from a carrier’s perspective, why would they want to sell new phones? They have to pay the subsidy. It would be much better for the carrier to keep people on older phones for longer unless they just want to trap them into some new contract with worse conditions than their previous one.

        • enigmaco

Well you do bring up a good point, and I did some searching on htc because they were listing ics updates for 3G phones that do not have 1GB of ram but the phones do have 768 mb. So maybe the storage issue could be the holdup.

    • Butters619

The get working ish versions out in a couple weeks. Carriers don’t like working ish

  • http://profiles.google.com/jeremy.sheehan Jeremy Sheehan

I just hope that the webtop functionality is better. It’s horrid right now (Bionic)

  • http://twitter.com/spdivr1122 Stephen

you can blame verizon for this bullshit

  • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

So by the end of June my XOOM should have ICS? I’ll believe it when it says update available.

  • MG_USMC

If I had a dollar for everything Moto. Or VZW said they were sending updates by a *timeframe * that they have No intention of sticking to, I could BUY VZW by now! I SWEAR I’M GONNA HAVE A HEART ATTACK AND DIE FROM NOT SURPRISED!! LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Buck/100003482949493 Joe Buck

not sure anyone is interested but, I was on the phone with verizon yesterday trying to get this guy to get them to give me the update for my pos nexus, could not get it,but he did call samsung to try and get it pushed to my phone, since I have had 5 of these turds already, anyway, they would not give it to me, but did say it was coming this month, so who knows, told him I was between running over this phone with my truck, or just going to sprint since they were selling them with the update

    • La2da

      You’re such a turd.

  • BenMock

Whatever happened to my poor photon?

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

      i know, Q4 is disgusting

  • moelsen8

wow. keep up the good work moto. i love the potentially 5/6 month gap between the xoom updates. hahaha.

  • Detonation

So that leaked timeline last month could still be right..It had the Razr update starting 5/23. But I wouldn’t be surprised if June 30th comes and goes and there still isn’t an update, followed by Moto announcing another delay.

Actually I bet the Razr HD will come out first, just so that’s the first Moto device to have ICS. Any recent rumors saying it will be out in Q2?

  • tech247

Dont have any of those phones or tablets but that schedule makes me want to slap the shit out of Sanjay. ICS was announced over 6 months ago. It should not take ANY manufacturer this long (especially a Google owned company!) to make it available to their devices.

  • Bionicman

Q2 for the RAZR will turn into Q3 and Q3 for Bionic into Q4 or “eh we’ll get to it when we get to it – Love, Moto”. I hate being so pessimistic but can anybody blame me?

  • hasbrobot

    Awesome!

    First!

  • maxoct97

At least Bionic has been reconfirmed by Moto, and there’s a timeframe.

    • Buy This

My sentiments exactly. A phone that is now cheap and already great will get even better.

      • WickedToby741

Not my sentiments exactly because I got the phone the day it came out for $299 and have been waiting ever since.

  • LiterofCola

    Woohoo!

  • RedPandaAlex

Remember that 18-month stuff that they were talking about at i/o last year?

  • Daniel Dlugos

We are going to need to separate all the comments on this thread into three groups.

The gloating Nexus users (“Pfft, I’VE had ICS since it was released…. what is taking them so long. What a pity really, ICS is quite lovely…”).

The whining Motorola users (“zOMG MOTorOLA!!!!!!!! WTFFFFFFF is taking so long????? I bought this phone in October when it was first released, I am such a LOYAL CUSTOMER!!!! Why do you HATE ME??????”)

And the Verizon haters. (“Verizon SUCKS!!!!! Mandatory tiered data plans and now THIS? SCREW IT! I’m going to T-MO where I can get REAL 4G!!! As soon as my contract is up. In two years, because I just bought my phone…….”)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=705034 Jeff Simpson

You forgot the Motorola Haters that aren’t Motorola Users. I guess most of us are also Gloating Nexus Users. :-)

      – Former OG Droid owner, would have bought the RAZR if not for Motorola turning Evil, happy with nexus.

    • Derrick James

I miss the days when i had an OG Droid where i could just update myself; i remember when eclair and froyo first came out and we could all do the updates ourselves independent of verizon and motorola. I remember one week i changed roms at least twice a day trying to find the perfect 2.2 rom; i even got 2.3 on my droid thanks to the outstanding development community. looks like we have come a long way…mostly in the wrong direction. i dont understand how a rooted and unlocked device can harm a network besides free tethering, but we should be able to do that free of charge and on our tiered data limits that they have forced us onto; sadly they will never change locked bootloaders or anything because no matter what we will still buy these phones over the competition…

      • http://twitter.com/55938 MrSix

I can think of at least 3 good ICS roms off the top of my head out there for various Moto devices. Yeah if you wanna flash new roms every week then avoid Moto at all costs, but if you just want ICS, the locked bootloader isn’t stopping you.

        • Guest

What if he wants full function ICS?
You forget – many games don’t work. YoutTube HD videos don’t work, face unlock doesn’t work. All because hardware acceleration is not present in the non-ICS kernels. So if someone relies on their phone for any of these things – well they are out of luck with Motorola at the moment.

    • LiterofCola

You also forgot to mention the Motorola users who never whined, and patiently waited for this since November.

      • Liderc

        rofl

      • http://www.unexpectedparameters.com Aaron Hurt

I was one.. but it tooooooooook way too long for this.

        • Butters619

You just whined, so no you weren’t one. :p

          • LiterofCola

            I lol’d

          • WickedToby741

He did say “was,” you know, like in the past tense. He WAS one, UNTIL now.

        • Dale C

Also, you emphasized the wrong word – waaaaaaay – would have worked better

      • http://fujibayashi.jp/ Gasai Yuno

I’m just waiting for them to support GSM and then I’ll “upgrade” from my DROID2 GLOBAL. By getting a used DROID4 off eBay. Because who knows when XT898 will finally be released, and because there’s no Verizon in Japan.

    • Motoguy

I guess I have nothing to say now. Thanks alot Daniel.

    • MooleyBooleyTroll

You forgot about those who will cry when the Razr gets an official 4.0.4 update before the Nexus.

      • Daniel Dlugos

I see what you did there…

      • http://sam.abuelsamid.com Sam Abuelsamid

I’m already running 4.0.4 on my Droid 3 and have been for 2 months in spite of Motorola’s incompetence

        • MicroNix

And how much of it doesn’t work yet?

          • michael

When did they take the Photon Off The List??? It was ther 2 Months ago on the List of phones to get ICS in Q3 2012, My friend is gonna be pissed!

          • Guest

The only things that don’t work are the video camera and bluetooth has a lot of static. The bluetooth is apparently an issue with the FM radio and the other recent Moto phones have the same hardware so hopefully this will get resolved when the Razr rom is pushed out. I can easily live without both of these so this has been my daily driver for 2 months now

Both of those are big things for me. I don’t want to compromise features of the hardware for the sake of running the newest OS. I can leave with quirks but full features like video camera being broken is a deal breaker.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/UDU4TNSQS5YYHEZDNNVVRP2OLM Lillian

as Carolyn answered I didnt even know that any body able to profit $5539 in four weeks on the internet. did you read this page LazýCash5.Çom

    • Promethius

Actually Verizon does kind of suck with the pricing, and as far as tier data plans… I don’t have a data limit on my plan, promotional plans are great. Unlimited data!! Yay me!! I digress though, I love my Droid X and will probabally stick with them without doing upgrades on my phones in order to keep my true unlimited data plan.

      • Johnny Nguyen

I upgraded to my phone from the Droid X to the Razr Maxx without having to give up my unlimited plan =)

  • Addinsx

If only there was a stock ICS phone you could buy on VZW that you could unlock and do whatever you want with….

    • jaymonster

It really should be, “If only there was a stock ICS phone you could buy on VZW that you cold unlock and do whatever you want with, that wasn’t cheap plastic, had decent radios and had a worthwhile camera…

      • Addinsx

Haven’t had any issues with radios or camera.. also haven’t had any issue with Motoblur.. Enjoy your update in 4 months

      • Butters619

But nobody wants a phone for that! Jeez what are you thinking?

  • Geeks on Hugs

I don’t understand why my Xoom with mobile broadband is taking longer than wifi only?

    • Addinsx

VZW sucks? However I have just recently thrown CM9 on it… that works great!

Isolate the parties involved and the answer lies within.

        *PENSE EMOTIONS*

  • AnotherAndroidKid

I hope we see further updates like this. I am waiting on ICS for my wife’s Rezound.

It is likely more frustrating to me than her though….

  • AhsanS

Droid 3 and X2 get no update? Way to go, Mototrolla.

    • Chuckers

      you’re just now realizing this?

    • http://sam.abuelsamid.com Sam Abuelsamid

Motorola really sucks now, try CM9, AOKP
      http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/downloads/motorola-droid-3/ or Gummy
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/21329-droid3beta/ I’ve been running ICS on my D3 for 2 months now and its better then stock GB ever was.

      • Senate9690

I use Gummy for the D3 and absolutely love it. The problem with D3 never getting ICS is that there will never be a ICS (official) kernel. Which may very well mean that we will never have hw codecs or a working camcorder among other issues. I’m hopeful that someone will figure it out but am VERY disappointed with Motorola’s decision.

      • MicroNix

I will not sacrifice hardware features just to have ICS. No ICS kernel = things that don’t work with an ICS rom. That is not what I call “running ICS on my D3″.

  • Mr Waldo

How the hell do devices that came out AFTER the Bionic get ICS before the Bionic?!?!? This is BS

    • LionStone

I think one of the criterias was device compatibility and popularity…

    • WickedToby741

It’s called Moto and Verizon pushed out the Razr and stopped caring about the Bionic.

  • http://twitter.com/Defenestratus Defenestratus

At the very least, Moto could be kind and unlock the friggin bootloader on the X2 so that the one I just gave my little sister will get a worthy mobile OS

  • http://twitter.com/JamMasterJim Jam Master Jim

F Verizon… Their bloatware probably slows down the process..

  • Derrick James

It should not take a year to get ICS on a phone…especially when the Bionic and RAZR have nearly identical hardware…..

    • jaymonster

And (Nexus aside) how many manufacturer’s are doing it any faster? There must be a reason that they are ALL struggling with this (though I have no idea what that reason may be).

      • Derrick James

lets try unnecessary skins that try to differentiate their products from the competition; i hope the biggest thing that comes out of this 5 Nexus thing is that the hardcore audience (aka us) will have updates way faster while the regular consumers who buy the bloated devices will wait when they really could care less about updates or dont know about them

        • noyfb

Not to mention that Jean Baptiste referred to all the bloatware that slows down the time to update it by trying to get it all on the new OS

      • http://sam.abuelsamid.com Sam Abuelsamid

Sony, Samsung and HTC have all been pushing out ICS updates for some time now to overseas devices. Some HTC devices here in the US are starting to get updates as well.

        • jaymonster

Yeah, overseas is nice… but not helpful. HTC has one device… and it started all of two days ago. Which yes is faster (obviously), but it is not like Motorola is so dramatically later than others (at least not yet), which is the point… They all seemed to struggle to some extent to get this update out compared with Gingerbread.

          • WickedToby741

It’s US carriers that are the problem. In Europe, a lot of devices can have updates pushed out without the carrier’s consent to my knowledge. Here, the carriers sit there and pick apart the updates for months. Plus, carriers are much more interested in selling new devices than they are in updating old ones.

    • bakdroid

Blame Verizon, they are holding back updates for some reason.

      • kretz7

New phones are coming out and they definitely want to market those (having ICS) before they update their current lineup with ICS.

    • http://twitter.com/Dave12308 Dave Russell

RAZR will supposedly have it by the end of this quarter (end of June), the Bionic is supposed to get it “early Q3″ which could be as soon as the first week of July.
It’s very possible that the RAZR and Bionic will receive it within a week or two of each other.
