Facebook to Buy Instagram for $1 Billion

Whoa, Facebook just bought Instagram for $1 billion. According to a press release, they plan to keep Instagram as an independent company and work to add some of its strengths into other Facebook products. Mark Zuckerberg has stated that they won’t force you to share things with or follow all of your Facebook friends and that they will continue to allow the app to connect with other social networks. Then again, don’t companies always say this stuff when they acquire another?

Mark Zuckerberg had this to say:

I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.

For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.

We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

That’s why we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.

We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.

These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram’s experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure.

This is an important milestone for Facebook because it’s the first time we’ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.

We’re looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we’re going to be able to build together.

Let me say it again, $1 billion for a camera filtering social app.

It might a coincidence but I chose to remove my Instagram account today…

  • summit1986

    Whelp… there goes the neighborhood.

  • no way, no how.

Did Instagram exploit an iOS limitation to create a competitor to Facebook?  Did Instagram start a “social” component to its app because you can’t easily share between apps within iOS?

Put it another way, if Instragram was Android only, would there have been a need for a social component due to the way Android allows easy sharing between apps (eg to facebook, G+).

Did they stumble upon pure gold by accident here?  We as android users are spoiled in that any photo we take with any app is easily shared via text, IM, FB, G+ etc, etc.   But as iOS users, you can only share via twitter or e-mail easily.  Instragram recognized this and created a solution – a social compenent that took off with iOS users because they couldn’t easily share otherwise.

    something to think about.

Thanks u made it make sense… I have been wondering what is the big deal with this app. Me never having a iphone and there and there limitations I wouldnt know… Thats y I never will

    • Trueblue711

As an Android user for 2 years (never had an iOS device) I couldn’t figure out why people were so crazy about this app, especially on the iPhone. I just didn’t see the difference between hitting the “Share” button on a photo and posting it to Facebook. Now I understand.

It’s almost sad that this was influenced by an iOS limitation, but at least some people benefited from it.

    facebook? Ew.

  • Cmrudy

I must be the minority…I would like to see instagram and fb together

  • Psychoticpantomime

You have all been Facefucked, again.

  • Danofiveo

I guess I won’t be using it, then.

  • speraider430

Why did they pay 1 Billion Dollars for a sepia filter?

  • Liderc

What’s strange to me is Facebook is usually well known for building their own versions of apps because they have the engineers to develop them in no time.  You’d think if they wanted a social camera filtering app they’d just make an even better one.  It almost seems like a strategic move to kill the masses that are jumping onto the instagram bandwagon.  I can’t honestly think they won’t integrate it with facebook, unless they start putting their advertisements on instagrams site and just leave it separate as a platform.

That’s the only way I can see them making money from instagram, they must be worried about the face time spent on the social aspect of instagram.  It can’t be the filter part, because those aren’t even good.

    • Google

Its playing offense. Why let Instagram continue to grow and potentially expand their social scope. Pay a billion now and kill it. Smart move for Facebook. I guarantee you they wish they had done the same for twitter a few years back.

      • Liderc

Meh, twitters actually losing members in the latest polls.  They have more spammers than actual members.

  • 11knives

Instagram is horrible, why not just give me the 1 billion throw away your XLR and I’ll give you a Kodak instamatic to take your pictures with.

Great, just as I was beginning to enjoy it. It’s going to Zuck now.

Yeah like how Google acquired Motorola Mobility and promised it wouldn’t interfere with it and then promptly interfered with it by replacing CEO Sanjay Jha with one of their own…..

  • EvanTheGamer

    Well…I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!

That came of nowhere…but it was bound to happen at some point. Hell, Twitter or even Google could have done the deed eventually…but I guess Facebook wanted to snatch ‘em up before that could happen. Crazy!

  • T4rd

This is just one of those things where you’re like “I should develop an app that most devices do natively and give it a hipster name… nah, that’ll never sell”.  =(

  • majormudafuckinhun

If it wasn’t for Android, this wouldn’t have happened! It’s bittersweet… Iphone beeochs!

Hahah. Yeah Facebook only decided to do this last week. Hahaha, they decided and executed a billion dollar deal in a weeks time. Nice try.

      • MKader17

Haha. Yeah, it was also a total secret that this was being released on Android up until last week when it was officially announced. Nice try.

      • majormudafuckinhun

Well asshand, I’m sure they had advance notice that Android was getting Instagram! So in some way or another it was because of Android!

  • rals

You know what’s cool? A Billion Dollars!

    • Guest

      this comment is underrated

    • feztheforeigner

I guess so…how much money does Facebook actually have? It seems like it would be a full year of revenue for such a useless app, why?

  • http://twitter.com/DroidGuru Droid Guru

WTF! $1 for a camera filtering apps is GOLDEN! The developer would have become a billionaire overnight!

  • Liderc

I can’t believe it.  A billion dollars for a filter app, this is unbelievable.

    • hkklife

WHY the F couldn’t they have thrown 1B $ at R&R of better lenses and imagine sensors for mobile devices? Or for a new battery or screen tech? Or a totally revamped Android Facebook app?

What a waste! This one will end up ranking right up there with the AOL-Time Warner merger, HP’s acquisition of Palm or News Corp’s MySpace acquisition.

      • Lumpysherman

They just want the data from every ones account so they can sell it. hasn’t FB come out and said their selling all of your info to pinterest? Don’t matter my FB account has been closed for a while… I know they will never erase my data but eh they are not getting any more of it.

    • EvanTheGamer

What a waste of money, yeah? lol

    • feztheforeigner

A billion dollars could create much better filters than this app, it’s not like it’s some magical application…

  • http://www.unexpectedparameters.com Aaron Hurt

    Well that ends that.

  • MikeCRock

Did you hear it??? That was the sound of millions of hipsters collectively sighing as they heard the news.

  • http://twitter.com/Phaze08 Cody Revels

Now I know why I never had the urge to install this to begin with..lol

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

You never had the urge to install an application because you knew that it would be acquired by Facebook? Pretty weird reason to not install an app.

  • DeJarvis Oliver

Wow. Talk about a BOSS move….

  • user01

Ha.  And the iphone users were mad about Android users scuzzing up the joint :D

  • DanWazz

    Bummer, back to StreamZoo.

  • Havoc70

    UGH! another FB clusterPhuk

  • Crazydog

Really? A billion dollars? That’s enough for half of the funding for another Apollo 11 mission.

    • no way, no how.

seriously.  you apply filters…to photos. FILTERS = 1 Billion dollars.

      FIL-TERS!

      • Crazydog

Don’t forget cropping to a 4:3 aspect ratio! That’s expensive computing. I bet their server farms chug for many processor-days to crop one photo.

    • Craig Waldick

Yeah, but how great would the photos of the moon have been with Instagram’s filters?

  • John

    Great. There’s goes that program..

  • Daniel Archibald33

    Facebook is a joke!!

    • http://twitter.com/john_ecko js

Yeah! All their billions of dollars making start-ups filthy rich. what a joke!

“In order to use this application, you must first upgrade to Facebook’s Timeline feature.”

    um, no.

    • http://twitter.com/jheyneman James Heyneman

I saw that when I tried using some app on Facebook, don’t remember which.  Yesterday, I got a notification that said “Here’s what your Timeline looks like which will go live tomorrow!”  Wonderful warning.

  • no way, no how.

yeah, another good reason to not use instagram. Use other alternatives people.  First, there are better alternatives and second, why would you want your entire existance on FB when they have a proven track record of privacy violations.

  • Michael_NM

Now, I completely understand why I immediately unistalled this app after trying it…

  • Benjamin Landwehr

Their going to develop this app(and I assume implement it into the desktop facebook) and they can’t even develop their facebook app now right?  Fail.

  • http://twitter.com/brigwheels patrick

    facebook = cartman’s trapper keeper

Facebook hasn’t even touched the app yet and you are going to uninstall it?

      • RCCola85

Why not? I doubt FB paid $1 billion in cash & stock to acquire Instagram & not put its hooks into it, regardless of what they have said. That’s what they do.

        • Themiddleman07

          Defensive acquisition

          • MKader17

Meh, The week after Zanga bought draw something the ads became obtrusive and actually crashed my app. I feel I can expect similar from this…
