Google’s Android Glasses With Built In Screen To Become Reality By This Year’s End?

Recent reports from various sources are stating that Google has plans to release specially designed glasses for consumers by the end of this year. Shown above is a pair of Oakley Thumps with the Google logo crudely shopped onto them. Minus the logo, sources close to the project have stated the glasses could look like Thumps but of course, will have a small screen built into the lenses for viewing by the wearer.

The glasses would be based on Android and even have 3G/4G data connections, plus GPS capabilities. If that isn’t enough, there are also indications that the glasses will come with a low resolution camera, for real-time layering of information on locations and other various things such as navigation. The most impressive part so far is what the price may be for technology like this. Sources state that they should cost no more than a regular smartphone. So we may be looking at about $300-$600 for a pair of these Terminator-like pieces of hardware.

Is this the next big thing, or is this just in gimmick phase? Would you be seen wearing these things and walking down the street? So far, I can only picture Eric Schmidt wearing these around town and thinking he looks awesome.

Does it come with a pogo car dock?

  • http://profiles.google.com/borochocho Cesar Lopez

If i can see through walls or any material then im sold!!!!!!!

  • KRS_Won

It would be really cool if game devs could make an augmented reality version of their software.

  • Anon

X-Ray Vision –there’s an app for that. ;)

  • genetruelove

Will it have bifocals for us old people?

  • EvanTheGamer

I’d buy ‘em if they aren’t super expensive, but would NEVER wear ‘em around town or anywhere where people can see ‘em. Would totally wear ‘em in my house though. Imagine watching Netflix through these glasses. That would be sick. OR playing a game with your mind. haahah

  • moelsen8

ya know what, for the right price, I’d buy them.  screw it.  it’d be a neat novelty.

  • Hjwd1

These look an awful lot like Oakley rip off’s…  just sayin…

    • TC Infantino

Uhm..did ya read the article at all?
”Shown above is a pair of Oakley Thumps with the Google logo crudely shopped onto them. Minus the logo, sources close to the project have stated the glasses could look like Thumps but of course, will have a small screen built into the lenses for viewing by the wearer.”
That might explain why they look like Oakley rip offs…just sayin…

  • Kyle

    I am buying 3!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/TJHRULZ tjhrulz

I am throwing my money at the screen but nothing is happening, I will take my pair in black or deep blue

  • tomgillotti

I’m in. I’m going with next, “must have”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

Just one more thing for us to worry about people messing around with while they’re driving.

    • http://twitter.com/Lancer033 Keith Hollis

it could also be a heads-up display so you would never have to look down.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Justin-Moore/100000103458508 Justin Moore

There should be a screen in each lens with adjustable opacity for 3D display/augmented reality. Eventually it would be good to have cameras pointed inward that can detect eye movements in order to allow control by looking at things.

  • KleenDroid

II would be real curious as to what these glasses can do. If they are a useful tool I would buy a pair. I see more potential with these than I do a tablet.

  • http://twitter.com/bibbyboi Mike S

Now all they need to do is incorporate kinect type of capabilities and you can bust the minority report all day.

  • KRS_Won

Can you root them? I need to be able to install black ops apps from overseas.

  • ddevito

Those ARE NOT what the glasses are going to look like. See attached for the real design.

  • TomAce7

Until Oakley changes their stance on locked bootloaders, I will pass on all their products.

    • KRS_Won

Eye can’t see them doing it in the near future.

  • tjpeco

If there’s a cheap version that doesn’t have cell radios in it that I could pair to my cell phone then I’m all about them.  I’ve already got a 4G phone and tablet that should be a single device with a tablet dock in reality.  I’m not interested in buying a third data plan.

  • huskerhog

Would look better in black.  Can you imagine people trying to drive while using these?  They’d have to be controlled by voice command only which would be clumsy at best.

  • Austinrgoebel

    Love them

  • ViciousKing1914

Will they help me get better in Modern Warfare 3 and/or Battlefield 3?  They look more like the optimum home entertainment glasses than for life.

  • Jeff

This could be a great thing for people with vision impairments like my niece……

  • Duh

So talking to your phone is dumb but wearing these ridiculous things is cool? hahahahahaha

    • tjpeco

Well, these would actually be useful.

  • LxMeister

I too would rather have them as an accessory to my phone, just like I’m waiting for the perfect watch as an accessory to my phone rather than a full-on replacement for it.

    Doesn’t mean I don’t want them.

Oh, and I couldn’t resist calling them “Google Goggles.”

  • Thanassi

OMG I CANT WAIT TO not BUY THESE!!

  • http://twitter.com/timberwolfkw Kyle Wilkins

Hahaha. It’s great to see Google breaking ground in new area’s it really is, but I don’t think we have the ability to pull off adding that hardware into glasses just yet. But one day if they can somehow fit it into my Oakley Radars without the immediate nerd flag going up I may bite. They should partner with Oakley for this. Great glasses.

  • r0lct

Surely they would be the official eye-wear of any DL event.  :P

  • Towelie420

I can watch porn while making awkward eye contact with people during conversation. WIN

  • ddevito

Ah, blinded – forgot to charge my shades again

  • Jim McClain

    300 to 600   ?   dont think so

    • http://twitter.com/eatmode4life Ray Mendoza

Considering a good pair of sunglasses will run from $150 to $300, its not that bad.

  • Timineri77

Now comes the question, who will be the first to the gate in rooting them?

  • Butters619

Hopefully they don’t copy those because they look like they come equipped with Apple earbuds lol

  • http://profiles.google.com/matthew.mason.1985 Matthew Mason

    “What is it Doc?”
“I thought I just saw a taxi following us in my rear view display.”
    Heck yes.

  • http://twitter.com/Kyle_Kidd Kyle Kidd

Really Google? stick to tablets and smartphones, oh and that whole search thing you guys do.  hahaha…..sarcasm

  • durangojim

I couldn’t see myself wearing these often, but I think they would be excellent when travelling.

  • CheeseMcGee

It’s already bad enough that people driving (including myself on occasion) check their phone constantly for texts and email!  Now we just make it more dangerous by putting the screen right in your viewing range… Brilliant!

On the plus side… you could be driving in the parking lot watching a failblog video with your sweet shades, and at the same time create an all new failblog video!

  • Dliuzzo110

Lmfao. Ha ha “thinking he looks awsome” aww shyte I needed that

  • ddevito

I honestly (still) think this will be a pilot testing program like the Cr-48 was.

In which case, where’s the link so I can apply 2,397,264 times?!

  • http://twitter.com/spdivr1122 Stephen

i think id rather it just connect to my current 600+ dollar smartphone and use my data plan then have to pay for a separate data plan. but these look really cool

    • Butters619

Agreed. An HUD in the glasses connected via bluetooth or wifi tether to the phone.

    • Raven

Exactly!  These suffer from the same failure as the Android watches.  I don’t want another full Android device.  But, I would love something to extend my current phone with these capabilities.  Whether they pair via bluetooth or something higher bandwidth, the ability to add a HUD from my phone to my glasses would be very cool, but I would never pay for a whole other phone (not to mention data plan) shoved into my glasses making them way bulkier than necessary.  You think the battery life in your current Android phone is bad now, imagine what would it be with the small battery they would have to use to cram it into some glasses.

    • KRS_Won

      Maybe they use Eye-Fi?

  • Bewara2009

All that crap with 3D is a gimmick and I am sure this will be a gimmick too!

  • LaCokaNostra

People should read the NYT article before they make ignorant comments. These sound revolutionary.

    • Thanassi

I don’t care if they also make coffee and give BJ’s. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing those things. Especially with “Google” on the side.

      • TC Infantino

Eh, I ceretainly would strongly consider them if the BJ part were true.  Even better if you got frequent updates that enhanced the ‘technique and skill’.  lol

        • Thanassi

I hear the “technique” upgrades will require more RAM and wont be available until Android 5.0

  • JaySee08

: I certainly would! However, I don’t think many would. I don’t even think Eric would be caught wearing them… in some of his dialogues that I’ve heard it seems like he isn’t even the biggest enthusiast of Android. Like his attitude is just ‘whatever’ about the platform.

  • baniels

Kinda of narrow sighted to only market these at beach volleyball dorks.

  • poeddroiduser

Right and I want a 4G radio and GPS next to my brain why?

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Do you not answer your phone? PS: You are surrounded by radiation at all times.

      • jayluis100

        Also very true though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sephXiroth Kyle Taylor

      idiot

    • http://www.facebook.com/TreyMotes Trey Motes

WTF? LOL! Dude you stick a PHONE next to your FACE.

    • jayluis100

Now this is among the two most important issues to be concerned with, the other being use while operating a vehicle or other type of machinery. Great observation.

  • Anon

    i would rock these

  • Thelegendofdavid

Mmmm sounds kinda cool…as soon as more info is available…”i’ll be back”

  • Jdstell

It will just be a gimmick. But, as soon as Apple comes out with iGlasses, it will be the greatest innovation known to mankind.

    • pezjono

I “like”d your comment, but I dislike it because it is totally true…

    • http://twitter.com/timberwolfkw Kyle Wilkins

They already patented the design for a device that sits on your ears and nose and shades the sun..

    • Michael Forte

Sad, but probably true. And then they’ll sue Google even though they had it first.

    • Thanassi

      iEyes

    • john0214

      eye phone :P

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716789798 Lonnie Kerchief

One of my favorite episodes, right behind Slurm.

    • KRS_Won

Lol. O gosh. Half the country won’t be able to see and have to call anything not iGlasses spectacles, or get sued. I’LLC be surprised if they haven’t already filed a patent for it like they did for face unlock, even though they don’t have the tech yet.

    • MrEnglish

Yea, cuz it’ll be designed right and not look like a homo day parade.

      • TC Infantino

Yep, you are right, Apple would design it perfectly…perfectly to what Apple wants, meaning that the screen would be too small, you could only put apps that were approved on it, and it would still only have 3G.  Move along iFanboi, the glass case enshrining SJ isn’t here, it is in the Grand Central Station Apple store.

    • Omar Ibrahim

       http://www.oakley.com/products/1238/2576

      sigh i would prefer these…

/laser eye surgery here i come

  • bakdroid

    First…….not to buy! :P

  • LaCokaNostra

Im ready to ditch my smartphone if these can make calls. Omg I want

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

You would want to wear dog the bounty hunter styled oakley’s? Am I the only one that hopes these don’t look like those trashy redneck glasses?

      • LaCokaNostra

Early adopters pay the price eh? These sound amazing tho. They can display information from the web, use images from the low res cam to identify objects. You control them with head gestures.

        • DroidzFX

          dude do you have tourettes?

Nah I was playing angry birds.

      • TC Infantino

I would take that as long as I didn’t have to ever look at Dog’s wife.  Ugh, I feel sick just remembering.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

That should be fun while driving at night…

      • LaCokaNostra

Why would you be stupid enough to use them while driving?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25001493 Hank Godwin

You said you would ditch your phone for a pair of these…

          • http://www.facebook.com/sephXiroth Kyle Taylor

            yeah…….. and?

          • justincase_2008

what if he has to make a call at night.
