Wednesday Poll: Does it matter to you that mobile Flash is dead?

Adobe announced a couple of months ago that its mobile version of Flash would no longer be developed for and that it was essentially dead. At one time, mobile Flash was one of the #1 selling points for Android phone manufacturers. Once Froyo hit, you couldn’t turn around without seeing Moto or HTC or Verizon bragging about the “full web” thanks to Adobe Flash. Now that those days are all but over and major apps like Chrome will not have mobile Flash, we are wondering if it matters to anyone. The web is moving more and more towards HTML5 and according to our poll yesterday, folks have decided that apps without Flash might be more valuable compared to those that have it. So let us know, will you miss Flash?

Yes it matters to me, in that it’s death should be hastened. When I had my iPad, I was very pleasantly surprised at how well the HTML 5 video experience was. I was also dissapointed when I switched to an Android tablet, that the experience with HTML 5 video was way behind, and that Android browser liked to load Flash whenever possible instead of HTML 5.

I then switched my browser User Agent on my Android tablet to iPad, and was able to enjoy some HTML 5 video. My experience is that it runs smoother, zooms to full screen easier, easier to control play, pause, and fast forward.

So I’ve been very happy at the announcement that Flash is essentially dead going forward on mobile platforms. It needs to die, and a quick transition to HTML 5 video is what’s needed. Not a prolonged, drug out transition.

Bring on HTML 5 video, and lets finally do away with Flash.

(on another note, as a graphic designer that has spent many hours on flash, I’m happy to see it go)

While I didn’t use Flash every day, the option of being able to is the important part. Some people don’t use Bluetooth every day, some don’t use the Nav function or Voice search every day…..but the important part is being able to when you want. It is sad to see Flash mobile die.

the majority of webpages use flash, flash should still be an option. simple as that…html5 talk is just talk, its not the standard, and is so far away from being the standard. Give me my flash please!

I don’t care until I run into a site I can’t view without it. Flash will be relevant as long as flash content exists on the internet. It sucks but it’s true. No one really likes flash, but running into content I can’t view more than I hate flash.

For the majority of my browsing I don’t use Flash. I don’t watch much video on my phone due to battery life concerns, and don’t use my tablet much (since Android still isn’t great on the Touchpad).

That being said, I still wish it was being developed. I love choice, and having the choice to use Flash was a big selling point for me. But at the same time it was obvious that Adobe didn’t have the chops to get Flash running really well on Android. In fact, the only platform I can say Flash runs on without much issue is Windows.

I care because allthough html5 is the future, its not the present. As long as many sites still use flash, it shouldn’t be abandoned on android! Its a HUGE contrast with iCrap!!!

Frankly, I wish desktop Flash would go away as well. It’s time, and we all need to admit it.

I know, I know, people will say that HTML5 is not ready for multimedia yet, but that is only because we have Flash as a fallback. I bet if Flash died tonight, HTML5 will be ready by the morning.

Content providers will start making the change once ICS w/Chrom is standard, if not before then. They can’t afford to lose iOS and Android users. So it’s just a matter of time, especially as people upgrade their phones over the next year or two.

I prefer my porn on a big screen & I don’t play any games, so take it or leave it, I voted no. Once it finally got pretty bug free(for me anyway) I obviously started using it more often but no hair off my sack that it’s dead. Always had it set to “on demand” anyway.

I use it daily. Various websites still use flash and when my friends try to load a site with their iphone I love laughing at them and loading on my D3G I think it’s pressure from Cupertino being 1 upped and they got paid…

It is a huge benefit to Android. The irony, of course, being now that devices are strong enough to handle Flash with little trouble, Adobe decided to stop support. I think this is a planning fail for their business. They just didn’t wait long enough and gave up too early.

  I would rather not have to use Flash at all, but it isn’t that bad on the Galaxy Nexus (it is still Flash of course so it has a high degree of suck-factor in general). Until most websites stop using it, I will still need it to a degree.

I use it from time to time, so I’m disappointed to see it being removed from existence. It’s not a huge issue, but I do like the ability to watch blip.tv, Newgrounds etc on my tablet. More so than on my phone.

The only times I see myself purposefully using flash are when I’m sitting next to my brother and his iPhone won’t load a certain website…then I pull out my G-Nex and load it with flash at 4G speeds

I’m sure there are sites I use it and don’t notice, too.

  I actually love flash, but I know I am in the minority. However, if you don’t want flash, then don’t install it. The ability to use something is always a positive if it is not enforced upon the user.

    Almost al sites use flash is why we love it. Besides, how long is it going to take for html5 to come out, and if/when it does how long will it take for every site to integrate it? So for the foreseeable I see flash being needed for at least the next 2-3 years. Flash sucks but its the most widely used player on the net, which is why we use it and need it.

        Lots of websites actually do provide an alternative HTML5 player. In many cases, you have to activate it manually.

      HTML5 is “out”. I develop it every day at my job. You would be surprised how many sites DON’T use Flash, unless we are talking about ads…but who the hell really cares about ads? Adobe acknowledges this with their development of Edge. Flash is dead as far as my industry is concerned. If you really need your fix – I can direct you to a few major, free porn sites that utilize HTML5 video.

    It boils down to this for me: By making it available it prolongs its use. Flash has been a bloated mess for years and it needed to be improved or it needed to die, and Adobe didn’t seem capable of actually improving it. People can be lazy and keep using flash because it is/was an option on some platforms. Apple never supporting flash on iOS was one of the best things to happen to the internet and mobile platforms – it killed it, it forced it to pasture like it should have been years ago.
    
    I’m also tired of visiting sites that use flash as a crutch. While I admire choice and freedom (it’s one of the reasons I love android), the dependency on flash needed to stop and hopefully this is another step in that path.

      It doesn’t matter how much you try to change the internet, flash will be there for a LONG time to come. I would prefer everyone switch to HTML5 or something, but the entire internet might take a while to do that.
      
      In the mean time, I would like to continue visiting the sites unable to switch. Don’t punish the users for this.

Neither of those choices. Its still used on some sites mostly for video, so I wouldnt say it doesnt matter. I could do without it on my phone, but on my tablet which is my main browsing device I would still like it. But I’m more than fine with it dying and being replaced with something better, whatever that may be.

All the local news stations in Dallas use flash for their videos. I like to watch their videos. There’s plenty of other flash stuff on the internet. Flash should absolutely either be continued, or everyone should be forced to commit to whatever the new standard is. I can’t just have a bunch of dead websites laying around just because all of a sudden there is no support. Lame.

  You standardize something by removing competition and/or resources. If Flash is removed, the industry will naturally evolve to accept the new technology.

It’s not that big a deal for me, most, if not all videos I watch have a YouTube link. With all the games available on Android, it’s hard to imagine anyone missing flash based games that you can play on a computer anyway.

But do I use it? Absolutely! It’s one of those things you don’t know how much you may need it until it’s gone… I definitely don’t need it on a daily basis (so using the Chrome browser is perfectly okay with me)… but there are times when I definitely need it!

I still use streaming video services that use flash, and I don’t think that will change soon. I wouldn’t mind it if everyone switched to html5, but I think you can’t properly kill it off completely until it’s ditched everywhere

Flash won’t matter if popular companies that use flash as a main source on their websites start switching over to html5, but if they either are slow to change or don’t change at all, then it would be have quite the opposite effect
