Motorola XOOM Project Actually Is Ice Cream Sandwich, We Have A Flashable Zip For You (Updated)

We all knew that Motorola was cooking something up for XOOM users of their Feedback Network but we did not know it was going to be this big. The “project” that Motorola had in mind for the members of their network is an update to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. The update has already started rolling out to members of the group last night and the community has been all over it. It is good to see a “Google Experience Device” getting the update finally and depending on how well this rollout goes, Moto could be looking to push this out to a wider swath of XOOM users fairly soon.

Solnarz, one of the main minds behind Tiamat which is one of the best known XOOM ROMs, released a .zip soon after news broke that this update was out in the wild. The .zip contains the official OTA in it’s entirety but there is a catch; you must be stock and non-rooted to flash it. This means if you are rooted running a ROM, you will need to downgrade to Honeycomb HTK75D before applying this update.zip. Keep in mind as well, this update is meant for US WiFi XOOMs, anything other than that is risking it. If you are already stock and un-rooted on Honeycomb than this should be an easy install for you; just drop it onto your SDcard and then install via recovery. Any XOOM users going to have a crack at this?

Update.zip

Many users have been reporting that flashing the update with a thumb drive and a connected USB cable works best. Links to how to do it through that way can be found HERE.

UPDATE: How to flash Clockwork Recovery to your stock XOOM

My apologies on this one, it has been so long since I dealt with the stock XOOM recovery I forgot that it had no update.zip flashing capability so here is a quick walkthrough on how to install Clockwork Recovery to your device to allow you to update to Ice Cream Sandwich. This requires no root and should have no bearing on the installation of today’s update.zip.

Instructions:

1. Download the recovery file image HERE.
2. Move the image file over to wherever your adb and fastboot files are set up in your computer.
3. Connect your XOOM via USB cable.
4. In your command prompt, type the following (fill in the XXXX’s with the name of the image)

adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery-solarnz-XXXXXX-XXXX.img
fastboot reboot

5. Let your XOOM reboot and your new recovery should be installed. To boot back into recovery you can type the following into your command prompt

adb reboot recovery

6. Now that you have your Clockwork Recovery installed just drop the ICS update.zip onto your SDcard, boot into recovery and select the “update.zip” function. Your XOOM should take care of the rest!

I am running the team eos nighties on my Xoom, are there any advantages in flashing this instead?

  • Anonymous

Opening the zip and removing the assert data worked for me as well.

  • Anonymous

finally got it to work. I unlocked my bootloader, flashed all the way back to 3.0.1 (found out that was only to root it… but also found out that I can get into the recovery i flashed by NOT letting the xoom boot all the way up.

    opened the zip,
    extracted the script-updater file,
edited the file with notepad++, (just deleted the first two segments)
then copied the edited file back into the zip file,
flashed my recovery (used Rogue Recovery)
then updated, I had my file on internal storage, since my sdcard would never mount.
    about to enjoy!

THANKS!!!I probably could’ve done with it without unlocking my bootloader…? oh well. whats done is done, and i have ICS!! I feel confident with adb. haha

what do i do? help please

  • David Martins

I finally did it through CWM and by editing updater-script inside update.zip. Hardest thing I ever did, even rooting the Desire was easier.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=508760559 Heidi Acevedo

I was able to load ICS via SD card using recovery-solarnz-120511-2030.img version of CWM. I Also had to load a google apps zip i found on http://www.mediafire.com/?1l4ravroiwt4ybw.

  • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

Don’t suppose anyone that has attempted this has posted a youtube video showing off how it runs on the XOOM. (Everything I’ve seen so far is in Thai).

  • http://www.facebook.com/NoAiMiSe Saif ALnoaimi

Does anyone knows if its OK to download it for the 3G version ??

  • http://twitter.com/mikesaimname michael broder

worked for me…took a little…i knew getting this cable from china was worth the 3 week wait…

Facebook account link still isnt working for me though…

  • David Martins

I’m getting a “assert failed: getprop(“ro.product.device”) == “wingray” something something when I try to install from SD with apply update from sdcard. Doesn’t work. (Us Wifi-only Xoom 3.2 here.).

  • http://twitter.com/howzball Mike

Thanks for this! I was getting the yellow ! with the android but screwing with the up/down buttons got me to the menu to select the update option. Once there it went without a hitch, this was from USB and OTG cable. I had put the update on the sdcard and it wouldn’t do anything, had to remove it before the USB would even work.

  • Anonymous

Really want to get this update going, but I’m not gonna spend 20 bucks to get a cable. Been trying to find a Female-Female USB adapter around the house with no luck.

  • Pmagent2013

Someone how do you use the sd card to do it?

    • http://twitter.com/howzball Mike

Interesting huh? Considering my Xoom never sees a USB drive, makes you wonder how I can flash from one.
Anyway, beware because I think some really important steps maybe missing here. I’m not able to even root using the well known methods because small updates have been released by Moto recently making CWM not actually load on these things.
There’s pretty good info over at XDA forums about it.
That “adb reboot recovery” process will prove CWR never loaded.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Travis-Royer/100000358962998 Travis Royer

I’ve been using TeamEos’ nightly ICS build #30, and already my Xoom feels like a completely new and improved device. As far as flashing this update, I will wait for a release with root access.

Is the “Shop” button working for everyone in the apps page? Mine is not for some reason.

  • http://profiles.google.com/borochocho Cesar Lopez

Im completely lost. someone make a tutorial!!!!!!!!!!!! i type adb recovery bootloader  and it says that it isnt a command. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Pmagent2013

up top it says you can use a sd card, how? i cant get it to work

    • http://profiles.google.com/borochocho Cesar Lopez

look at the update. im lost trying to install recovery thing. help me!!!

  • Anonymous

Is this only me having problems? I have a Unlocked Bootloader Xoom on HTK75D. I’ve NEVER had a custom ROM, Just a Custom Kernel from Tiamat but I removed the custom Kernel by flashing update_US-Xoom-WiFi-3.2.1-HTK75D_stachre_v02.zip which is a factory kernel. Every time I go to flash the ICS Update I get this. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Ryan57ford Ryan Chapman

Man, I took a couple old cables and turned them into a Host cable ( I can verify because i was using my USB mouse on my xoom), I stuck the Update.zip file on the USB and it always just tells me no such drive when I try to perform update… This sucks.

    • Pmagent2013

how did you make a host cable?

      • http://www.facebook.com/Ryan57ford Ryan Chapman

I took a USB cable and a Microsoft Micro USB cable (It is Micro right?) I cut them in half and I connected the like color wires and there is a extra brown wire you add to the black/black and poof, its done… except for I cant seem to get the USB to flash.

  • Jamesromick

This just ain’t worth the headache! I’m going to wait for the OTA push.

  • http://twitter.com/jfafard81 Josh Fafard

Unlocked my zoom rebooted bootloader but when trying to flash recovery I get an error cannot load (file name) any ideas???

  • Nicholas Goss

Not that this is a support forum but +1 got into CWM, but error applying update.zip.

  • Anonymous

So, I unlocked my Xoom, FORMATTED -___- , installed CWM, rebooted into CWM, and when I go to apply Update.zip from the sdcard I get the following:

    — Installing: /sdcard/Update.zip
    Finding update package…
    Opening update package…
    Installing update…
    assert failed: getprop(“ro.product.device”) == “wingray” | |           getprop(“ro.build.product”) == “wingray”
    E:Error in /sdcard/Update.zip
    (Status 7)
    Installation aborted.

Fun stuff. Just desserts, I guess.

    • William Clark

Exact same error. Thanks for posting it in detail

    • jason

Same Here :( All that work for disappointment

      • Nicholas Goss

I’d be far less upset if I hadn’t wiped my Xoom getting this far…

      • Anonymous

        Yup.

But at least you can try and find solace in the thought that other intrepid Ice Cream Sandwich seekers might stumble upon our sun-bleached bones, and ruminate on our defeat before moving forward with their own fruitless endeavors.

    • Asdag

      Same here.

    • Anonymous

i’ve already posted this picture once but i’m just verifying were all in the same boat?

  • http://twitter.com/timberwolfkw Kyle Wilkins

I was hoping my HP Touchpad would have gotten ICS released by the great guys at CyanogenMod before the XOOM. That would have been great! The Nook Color AND Touchpad get it before the XOOM.

  • chriscutlip

line 4 isn’t making any sense to me ” In your command prompt, type the following “,  What command prompt are they talking about?  anytime these instruction are written, certain assumptions are taken and they don’t explain things enough for someone who has never done this before.  I’ve rooted and ROMd my phone, but this is the first time I’m doing anything to my Xoom.  Any clarification would be appreciated.

    • Kuboo99

You need to install the android SDK: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK#Windows first. Then run a command window from the folder within it called platform-tools I think. You hold shift and right click and choose “open command window here” then you can do the commands listed above but make sure the recovery image you downloaded from above is in the platform tools folder. I hope this helps

  • Anonymous

Damn Motorola what about the people with 4G LTE Xoom’s we want ICS

    • Anonymous

have patience my son. it’s not like they have to slap blur on it or anything

  • Nicholas Goss

Not exactly sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ve unlocked, I’ve gotten the recovery to flash, however booting back into recovery results in the “Android Recovery” mode not Clockworkmod. Very confused.

    • jason

Im stuck at the same point. Can’t access anything but the android recovery

      • William Clark

Those instructions he posted are old. When you do the fastboot reboot, when you see the motorola logo show up, count to 3. Press volume down and it will say entering recovery. However, once you get into the CWM, you will get an error applying the update.zip , it will not flash.

        • Anonymous

Yeah, that’s what I’m running into as well, it seems.

  • Anonymous

I’d like to mention I let the cat out of the bag yesterday.

    You’re welcome.

  • Anonymous

These freaking instructions are not working for me. Firstly. “recovery-solarnz-XXXXXX-XXXX.img”
is NOT the name of the recovery file image provided. That has a filename of “recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm”

When attempting to run the second command of “fastboot flash recovery recovery-solarnz-XXXXXX-XXXX.img” it will not work unless I use the filename of “recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm” which does work, and makes sense.

But when I do that, I get:

“Device still locked. Device must be unlocked first.
Failed to process command error (0x8)”

I thought the whole point of these instructions (which appear to be copied directly over from the ones on XDA, which are -also- outdated or incorrect) was that it put CWM on the Wi-Fi Xoom while preserving root.

I am totally lost, any guidance is greatly appreciated.

    • jason

Im having the same problem with these steps

sending recovery okay writing ;recovery’… FAILED <remote:

    • http://www.facebook.com/CeridwenOmega Alex Berson

      fastboot oem unlock

This will unlock the bootloader/recovery for flashing

      • Anonymous

Notice– this will format your Xoom.

eh, such is the price for playing with custom roms and early versions, just wait until the official update hits if you need to keep all your apps and settings.

          • Anonymous

Hah, no problem with that NOW.

    • http://twitter.com/drnoir Carlos Medina

Had the same. Move the recovery image file to c: and then type
      fastboot flash recovery c:recovery-solarnz-XXXXXX-XXXX.img

No, built only for WiFi Xoom.

No. This was built for the US Motorola Xoom wifi ONLY.

      • Ghhowell

The Family Edition is a US Motorola Xoom Wifi Only…lol. Just branded Family Edition and sold at Best Buy.

  • jbonics

Does the update do anything for that screen, they should give all you XOOM owners ics with a cherry on top. Next poll how many retarded XOOM owners paid $600 or more. Wol. TF…. sucks huh. I would be pissed too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

no, it wasn’t built for a 3g/4g model, they would have completely different kernels built for each device. Don’t even try it.

      • Anonymous

Wrong. It WILL work on 3G/4G Xoom’s. You will not have 3G/4G data though.

I have a 3G Xoom. Been running Wingray because the LTE version won’t work.

        • U Mad Bro? No But Your Mom Is

And just to clarify, my Xoom will forever be incapable of using 3G/4G???

          • Anonymous

Well until you install the right version….your trying to install a version that has no capability for CDMA/LTE data….

Ive been running Wingray (Wi-fi only ICS)on my 3G Xoom for weeks. I went BACK to Honeycomb today so I can send it to get upgraded to LTE.

  • Tjbyrdsr

Manual updating can be done now. The official upgrade is on the Google servers:

    http://android.clients.google.com/pa…D.71a21bfe.zip

Put the zip file on a flash drive connected by an OTG cable and boot into recovery mode to install. It doesn’t wipe any data.

      • http://profiles.google.com/borochocho Cesar Lopez

thanks for answering. r u sure? Eric said to just drop it on the sd card. Make sure for me so i can go out and buy it.

        • DBK

Considering most of the comments (including some by the dev (I believe) who released the .zip) say as much (and I have done it to my friend’s Xoom) yes, I am sure.

As for the camera connection kit, not sure.

          • Crazydog
