DROID Bionic Update Finally on the Way, Here is Your Massive Bug Fixer

Here it is DROID Bionic owners. The massive bug fixer that we have been expecting is finally ready for prime time. In it, you will find improved stability to avoid power cycles, a faster auto focus in the camera, and better 4G/3G connectivity to name a few. The phone can somehow magically support 8 devices while on hotspot now, something we were previously told was limited to 5 due to hardware limitations. If you power the phone off, it won’t power back on by itself and SIM cards should activate much quicker. The list is extensive and goes much deeper, so be sure to click both images that we have attached to get the full list.

No word on a release, but when support documents are made available, we usually see something within 1-2 weeks. The update is 54.5MB and will leave your phone at Blur build 5.5.893.

*Note – Received word that this update could start rolling out as early as tomorrow. As you all know, that doesn’t mean everyone will get it tomorrow, but it should hit a small test group.

Page two after the break.

More info.

Cheers Matt!

Haha as soon as I get rid of my Bionic the fix is released. MY LUCK!

  • Donnie Rico

I am on my seconf Bionic and feel this phone is POS. Battery life is horrible, 4G is almost unusable unless you want your battety to last 4 hours. I set it to 3g and leave it. This rag drops data service on a regular basis and you have to either go into airplane mode and then back or reboot. It black screens all ths time as well. This new update hopefuilly will help.. Get your act together Moto.

  • Cmandd

Update rolls out to the “soak” group this afternoon, per the email. Whoever ended up with my Bionic will be happy. I’m happier with my Rezound.

  • Bionic

im trying to unroot and it keeps getting stuck at step one (setting up symlink)….

Anyone know whats up with that?  When I first rooted using the one click it did it on the first try

    • http://clearrants.tumblr.com clearrants

You don’t need to unroot to get the OTA. Just make sure that if you froze any of the stock apps to unfreeze them.

Also, to answer your previous question, 893 AFAIK is unrootable at this point. You can use p3droid’s forever root though, to keep root through the OTA

      • Bionic

Wow really?  I thought you had to unroot.  Now you tell me, lol.  I finally got the program to work and its unrooting as I speak.

So in your opinion should I use the forever root right now?  Is that one-click?  Where do i find it?

        Sorry , im a noob

        • http://clearrants.tumblr.com clearrants

It’s not one-click but it’s fairly easy. I actually just did it earlier this evening to get ready for the OTA. Took about 5 minutes.

You need to install Root Explorer from the Market and follow the directions here:
          http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/how-tos-guides-definitions-manuals/9718-how-maintain-root-through-any-upgrade-motorola-devices-only.html#post105222

Here’s a youtube video that walks you through the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8JQIScYaYO8

          • Bionic

so your saying if i accept the update after unrooting i wont be able to root again?

          • http://clearrants.tumblr.com clearrants

As far as I know, there is no root method yet for 893 and above. Someone may figure out a way somewhere down the road, but there’s no guarantee. p3droid’s forever root is your best bet to keep root (at least through this update).

I may be wrong. The Bionic is my first Android phone so I’m pretty new to this too. But that’s how I understand the current situation regarding rooting and updates.

          • Bionic

Yanno honestly I only use root to freeze bloat but even bloat dosent bother me much. I think ill just get the OTA and wait for ICS which has native app freezing. Bionic should get ICS by June.

  • Righy

i am about as happy as a nexus owner on its release day

  • Bionic

Im gonna go ahead and un-root before I got to bed.  Does anyone know if ill have trouble re-rooting after the update?  I used pete’s motorola one click tool to root when it first came out.

  • Bionic

You DO have to un-root in order to get the update right?

    • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

Just wait for a rom thats based off it. There will probably be a stock rooted rom released a day after.

      • Bionic

im a noob and dont know how to install ROMS.  I think im just gonna un-root before i got to bed and hopefully I can still root after the update using pete’s one click like I did before

  • Dhuff44

not sure if it means anything, but when i check for an update for my phone in the settings, about phone, it says check for update not available at this time, maybe there getting it ready?

    • Bionic

      probably

  • Bionic

So should I unfreeze my bloat and un-root right now?

  • Silver91354

Coming to Droid Life, I come for the latest going-ons and updates pertaining to anything Andorid as most of you do. What I don’t understand is why do some come on here bashing any post that pertains to The Bionic? If you don’t plan on getting a Bionic or have an iPhone or other, what does a Bionic post have to do with you? I have and love my Bionic and am happy to read posts here whether it be a review or update to the phone. By the way, if you scroll down on the right side of this page, the Bionic review sums it up well. Go away trollers.

      Welcome to Droid Life

  • hotrodder4life

i have had my bionic now for just a month, and i am on my 4th bionic in that month. so either i have the absolute worst luck with them or its a pos in my book and that is what i think. i have tried the leak it was better than the phone was originally and i just looked at the number for this build and what i had on my last phone and truly wonder what the difference is if any being as the numbers are the same. i have had cell service for 15 years now and will say that this is the absolute worst phone i have ever had or been around. thank god for having lines coming up that i can burn an upgrade if i have to to get a decent phone. bad thing is shouldnt have to do that, if this doesnt fix the issues, either vzw better do something or i will get my attorney involved and go after both parties. i must say that with all the issues the bionic has, someone in the vzw or moto camp had to know something wasnt rite before releasing this pos. no way i should have to be on my 4th in 1 month, i have had this last replacement for 1 week now. so for all of you that have had good luck with it more power to you, however i have had absolute fits from mine. i however love the lapdock idea but it is worthless with phone acting like it does. i have also been on the phone numerous times and customer service has been worthless in this matter. bad thing is until this mess i had never had any problems with the service or customer service, something i can not say for att which i had before switching to vzw almost 2 years ago and got the og droid if it had not broke the back display after a drop 1 day i would probably still be using it. i have already had the t-bolt and the revolution before this and kindly wish i had just kept the t-bolt and never got the bionic but i gave the t-bolt to my dad when i got my bionic. this is just my experiences with the bionic and sure im not the only that feels like this. also as 1 other thing and that is the camera is the biggest joke of an 8mp camera i ever seen i use mine quite a bit. sure someone will say have a different camera and you could, but at the same time the best camera to have when you need 1 is the 1 you got with you not what you have have at home if get into a wreck or something happenes etc, so therfore the best for me is the 1 on my phone, and my og droid did a better job all things considering especially if i need to zoom in or anything. Motorrola has lost all my business after this and i have informed them also after numerous call to them also.

    • Anonymous

Why dont you let us know, how you really feel?

      • hotrodder4life

it has been tried on all but the newest and it seemed the biggest difference i noticed was with the camera focus time that it did help. however it did nothing for the quality of the pic. also the razr is out the question battery life is not long enough for my uses when at work and cant keep it on a charger when i find something toreplace this pos that can last a night at work (10 hrs with pandora going) i will destroy this pos i think a .45 from my gun will fix it then i may just send it to motorola to show them what they should do with the damn thing to start with. like i said in 15 yrs cell service between att and now vzw this is hands down the worst phone hi have ever had or been around.i am done with moto after this and if this shit continues i will have my attorney take care it all i didnt sign a 2 yr contract for this crap. vzw been saying this is the fix it better be this time i am waiting on the official patch if it fixes the crap great if not i am calling vzw 1 last time for them to fix then i will let my attorney take care of it. i like vzw service much better than att, however i am not going to have this crap

        • Anonymous

Wait do you have 893 or not?

    • Complainnuff

talk to the rep he was gona give me a razor but none was in stock im a wait till the nexus comes out and get a free update

    • Dude

Your situation with the Bionic sucks, and I would probably be just as upset that you are, but have you applied the update to all 4 that you have received? I can understand the update not fixing every single phone out there due to the fact that phones can have different issues. I do however think that the update would have fixed the known issues with at least one of the phones you were given.

      • http://twitter.com/Transhawn Tran-Shawn Yu

hahaha, seee! im not the only one that has issues with the bionic even after the updates!! ;)

    • http://twitter.com/Transhawn Tran-Shawn Yu

I completely agree… the bionic is my last moto phone ever.   VZW has a lot riding on this update.  I will berate them with calls to complain if this fix does not address the issues with this phone .

    • Anonymous

All you need is 5.5.893. Try it and watch all those problems disappear and battery life double as well.

    • Sarlynkap

Seriously? Your attourney? Pretty sure if u signed a contract you signed a manditory arbitration clause. If u don’t like the phone burn another upgrade up. Or call and bitch about it like my fiance did about our stratospheres. We have two free Bionics on the way. :-) vzw takes care of their customers if you give them enough hell about it. Your attourney can’t help you. Maybe if you call the police? LOL.

If the D4 or the Nexus isnt out by next weekend, I’m getting a Bionic. Even if they do, I still just might get myself a Bionic.

    • Anonymous

Its a great phone. I do suggest the extended battery and get at least 5.5.893(you can get 5.6 and 5.7.893 as well) it makes it alot better.

  • Anonymous

I see nothing mentioned about a market fix. Anyone else having the issue where the market isn’t linking the right account? Glad to see the missing app issue is being addressed. I like this phone, but I’m a little angry that there are so many bugs after it was delayed 5 months to launch. You’d think they would have been able to work them out. For what it’s worth, I did install Eclipse ROM today & it’s working very well, & no issues with the market, which tells me it’s a blur thing most likely. Actually considering paying full price for a Galaxy Nexus. Again, I like the phone, just angry about why it has all these little issues.

    • Anonymous

It was completely redesigned so they really didn’t have a full six months to test for bugs, it was a lot less than that.

  • wichita6

    Don’t take it, that simple

  • chowyenfats

I’m scared to get the update, I haven’t had a problem with my phone, runs smooth as butter.

    • Brice

Same here. I’ll try to wait a week or two to apply it to
clear out all the suckers but I’m not sure if I can resist.

    • Alexander Garcia

Thank you  :-)  on behalf of Bionic owners here

  • Bizda

Anyone know if the forever root method will work if we take this update OTA?  Thought I remember p3 saying this update would close all known exploits

    • Keith Sumner

Yes it does work, check XDA forums

  • I05h8ter

Damn. Already running the 5.5.893 update. I was hoping more goodies would have been added. Ah well… guessing its time to r00t! Update is wonderful though for all of you still on the original version.

  • TiredOfGNexusCrap

I have to ask, why is the Galaxy Nexus even on this site if it isn’t a Droid brand phone? Im kind of getting tired of the endless G Nexus comments and post and am about to stop coming to the site completely.  Its getting really tiring of going to the comments section for information and seeing Nexus spam everywhere.

They come to droid post to type crap and when i bash their beloved nexus, they start to cry like little girls.

The only people who think this phone sucks are people who don’t have it.  It is a great device and now it will be better. I’m very happy with my purchase and no douche saying otherwise will change my mind.

    • Anonymous

I do agree with you 100 % . I do love my bionic, but i love my razr even more.

      • Sk102704

If my OG Droid could have made it a few more months I would have gone for the Razr or GNex but it wouldn’t so I can feel good about my Bionic purchase. I would have loved to have one of those but for my situation my Bionic is great.  A lot of great devices have or are coming out on Verizon right now so regardless of your preferences its a great time to have an upgrade on Verizon.  Glad the Razr is a great device too.

      • Bionic

why do you have 2 phones ?

        • Anonymous

I never cancelled my other line and i added a new one to have two devices. I may cancel one line if verizon let me stay with my five contacts to call other carriers and not waste my minutes.

    • stevil

Not true – I’ve had black screens that could only be resolved with battery pulls, random reboots, 4g/3g/no g transition issues, poor BT performance, and the high pitched headset whine. I’ve replaced the SIM card, and done about 5 factory resets at Verizon’s request. Over time, the voice quality seems to have become more muffled.

If the upcoming OTA fixes these problems, it will make me feel better overall about the phone, but I’ll compare the experience to what I had with my OG Droid and think that Moto and VZW could have handled it a LOT better.

      • Anonymous

5.5.893 fixes all those issues. Ive had this update for a couple months already via cheesecake and its awesome. The battery life is AWESOME btw. 5.5.893 is just a new kernal, new radio and a tweaked camera(its faster). Im running a 5.7.893 based ROM now.

        • Atdpitt

          how did you get this?

      • Cjr1

I have been having the same problems with my bionic too.

    • Noboatfey

That’s bs.  I’ve had nothing but trouble.  When the phone switches 3g-4g, it looses all g’s.  i have lost it for more than 19 hours.  I have the phone on CDMA only and still looses connection.  Brother bought 3 for his business and he is in another state and experiencing the same thing.  You need to get your head out of the sand and listen to these people.

Too bad they are not rolling the Razr software out with these fixes.  I really want to unlock to the camera, saves one step.

    • Keith Sumner

bakdroid, I have this update on my Bionic and you can NOT unlock right to the camera. The camera works faster, though, as it should.

      • Anonymous

Hence why I said I wish it was…

    • Anonymous

It’ll all change anyways when they both get updated to ICS. I would strongly recommend downloading QQLauncher and enabling its lock screen, it’s the MIUI lockscreen with the four choices. Works really well (as long as you don’t use a password).

    • Lakerzz

Widget locker works really well for that.

Talked to Verizon yesterday due to the 4G outage and asked about the update for the Bionic was told that one update would rollout December 9th and another would be coming mid January. So thats what im going off of.

  • Anonymous

Awesome. My Bionic will be even sweeter now. That update didn’t take too long.

    • Alexander Garcia

Moto/VZW actually been rather timely with their updates lately. I’ve received 2 official OTA’s for my DX2 all within 3 months after buying it in May. Google just may have that nasty whip of fury crackin’ at Moto! LOL

Yea, but Moto has generally been pretty good with updates over their droid existence anyways. It will get even better with Google standing over their shoulder now.

        • Alexander Garcia

          Ah… True. Very true.

  • RaptoOO7

The only way you could get more out of your Droid Bionic is if it actually had been released on time, but now its just sad, old and bloated.

    • Anonymous

Yes because the Bionic is the only phone that was ever delayed!   Enjoying your Nexus?

      • Anonymous

Our bionic will get better and better. Moto is not like Samsung. Samsung totally forgot about the fascinate lol.

        • Anonymous

And the Charge. Just now got Gingerbread… How they could ever brand that phone as a Droid and then forget all about it months later. My wife has one and she will probably never see ICS. It is a damn shame. Typical of Samsung though.

          • LionStone

Well, yea, I don’t know either how they could call it a Droid? But I think they all put out mediocre ‘filler’ phones that are supposed to be high end but maybe fall short a little. My bro has the Charge too, he likes it fine, it’s his first Android coming from Blackberry. Step mom has the Bionic so I’m watchin out for those updates too ;)

        • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

The Nexus will get better and better first. Its a nexus so Samsung and Verizon have no control over the updates so we don’t have to wait 4-6 months for updates.

I don’t own a Bionic, but your comment is incorrect and idiotic.

      • Anonymous

The razr, rezound and gs2 make the nexus look outdated. Nexus just have ICS going for it.

        • http://twitter.com/expertontech Tylar Overturf

No the Nexus is spec’d the same or better then these phones. The exynos processor will never come to Verizon unless the LTE chip becomes compatible with it.

          • Anonymous

How is it better? The only good thing is ICS. The razor has the best specs, then the rezound. The razor has build quality, call quality, water repellent, moto cast moto actions and all the accessories. The rezound beats the nexus on the camera and front facing camera department. It also has a better display than the nexus and best sound.

  • Gino Fratto

But what does that have to do with the Nexus?

Wonder what bugs and how fast our fixes will come to us up and coming Galaxy Nexus Generation…  Here’s to hoping for the best and …. well you know the rest.

    • Anonymous

Lots of bugs, phone was supposed to update the second it was activated. Fast fixes? Apparently not fast enough, hence the delay. But thanks for completely ignoring the fact that this topic had nothing to do with the Nexus.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H5YGCBBRCO4VJPKPDDRBNWFWOE Eric

if 5.5.893 is the update and im already on 5.7.893 and still having an assortment of issue.  I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to use this phone

    • Keith Sumner

I’m on 5.893 and don’t have any problems, my only issues with this phone is that the battery door doesn’t sit flush and creaks all the time.

      • Justin Goldsmith

jesus h christ – that is the ONE thing that drives me nuts about the bionic. I’ve been fine with every software issue (trusting there would be an update) but for fcks sake after 8 months delay you can’t make the BATTERY DOOR FIT NICELY?! my god…

        • Anonymous

Mine used to do that on one side until I took the battery out and reseated the cover, now it doesn’t creak anymore.

          • Alexander Garcia

thanks for that idea. I’ll tell my friend about that.

      • Lakerzz

I know this sounds ghetto as all hell, but just put a couple of strips of electrical tape on the bottom of the battery door, and squeks be gone.

(This kind of reminds me when I had to do that with my OG to keep the battery door from falling off all the time)

    • Daniel Dlugos

Well …. if 5.5.893 is the official, stable release, I’m led to believe that you are using a development build.  Just because it’s a higher number sequence, doesn’t mean it’s better or more stable by default.

Case in point, the upgrade from Firefox 3x to 4x.

      • Austin

I’m on 5.5.893 and it is better but I still have issues in areas where 4G signals are weak and switches over to 3G. Most times bumping it in airplane mode fixes it. But two days ago it took 2 battery pulls to resolve. Battery life is better. It’s annoying having a 3G or 4G signal and no data connection.

    • Dude

Yeah I was thinking about upgrading to 5.7.893, but 5.5.893 fixed all the issues so I’m glad I didn’t.

    • http://twitter.com/Transhawn Tran-Shawn Yu

I still have issues on this build as well…

Nice! Good thing I already have the 5.5.893 update. Was hoping Verizon would release another. Now who was that guy in the other thread arguing with me that the 5.5.893 update wasn’t the official update …. ;)

    • Tferrell7368

Possibly Dans_Droid if your talking about the Moto Owners Network…hes the “non” official thats always ‘sounds’ offical

      • Dude

wonder if this will break root…most likely it will.

    • Keith Sumner

It doesn’t, if you did forever root you will still be rooted, you can even root a stock 5.893, go check XDA forums dude.

Google and Verizon: stop updating this already-outdated phone and release my NEXUS. Every single Verizon employee should be working on that and nothing else.

    • Anonymous

Agreed! Signed! Petitioned! Any other thing to get that freakin phone in my hands!

    • bigrob60

More like Moto & Verizon on this one.

    • schrockdog

Yeah, cuz it totally makes sense for Verizon to ignore purchasers of one of their phones. This is why verizon is at the top of consumer satisfaction, because they support their phones that are already out

purchasers is definitely not a word

Stay on topic or gtfo. There are plenty of Nexus posts for you to cry in.

      • Mctypething

Do you see how this update fixes the disappearing app issue?

        • Anonymous

          Yes, always said it would.

          • Mctypething

I see it now, “when moving applications to the SD Card, shortcuts to these apps will remain”

          • Guest

you a worthless cum sucking faggitt dick bro?

      • Anonymous

He is another cry baby like the rest of the nexus geeks lol.

        • Guest

          ……

    • Mctypething

Right. And you’re probably one of the fools clamoring for the Nexus to be released even if it has issues and bugs. Do you want Verizon to ignore those bugs to release whatever the next phone is? Moron.

      Go troll somewhere else. Retard.

    • Dude

If you think the Bionic is an outdated phone, you really have no idea what you are talking about and you shouldn’t waste bandwidth with your comments.

    • Dude

I now look at everybody that buys a Nexus the exact same way I look at people that buy the iphone. Thank you.

Brilliant!  I’ve been feeling this way for weeks and I’m glad you said it.  =]

      • Anonymous

        Been thinking the same thing.

      • Anonymous

        You’re just now, noticing this?

      • Anonymous

Thank you. Ive been feeling that way as well.

    • Anonymous

I’d like the Nexus, but I wish people like you would stop making such idiotic comments on posts that don’t pertain to the Nexus. Basically you make us all look like r-tards.

      • Anonymous

lol you got it right once again. He is just jealous that he does not have a new device as of yet.

Never thought I’d ever say these words in my life, but; I agree with doctor Buttballs

It’s bound to happen. The first step to recovery is acceptance. These next few weeks are going to be a major challenge. So if you need help don’t forget to consult your peers at Droid Life for support and of course the resident physician, me, Dr. Buttballs. :)

sorry, but verizon love their moto products :)

Oh bugger off, this patch lists literally EVERY single issue I and many other Bionic owners have had with an otherwise excellent phone.

      • bigrob60

Bugger off. +1’d without having to read the rest. With that said, I’m glad you had a decent point.

    • http://www.facebook.com/wingdo Doug Wing

Ummm, for those of us who cannot fork out $650 for a GNexus and who already own the Bionic, I would hope Moto and Verizon do not stop updating the phone.

I would imagine if you owned a phone which wasn’t receiving updates, you’d probably bitch about that too.

Good thing I will be chunking this phone to the wife for the G-Nexus. Oh wait, that won’t be tomorrow as I initially wanted… :(

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1516178542 Jim Frye

Exactly what I was planning to do this weekend! I was even planning to buy a pink case or skin to sweeten the deal

    • Scogginsanthony

      “chunking”

      • Anonymous

You have to forgive me. I’m from the deep south and where I come from we say “chunking” instead of “chucking”.

“Verizon always thoroughly tests their phones so they launch bug-free” My a@@.

perfect the fixes come right before the ‘release date’ of the nexus… so much for using the bionic as a successful substitute before the nexus.. facepalm
