HTC Rezound Having Sound Issues Through Headphones, Including Beats Earbuds

If there was one area that the HTC Rezound should not have issues with, it would be in the sound department. As Verizon’s first Beats Audio enabled device, and one that is supposed to take sound on your mobile phone to the next level, we can’t help but hope they already have a fix in the works for this one.

According to a handful of our readers and a growing number of forum posts across the Android community, the Rezound is experiencing some sort of static or interference when using any type of headphones including the iBeats that come with the phone. It doesn’t appear to be related to the Beats audio built-into the phone, as the issue can be replicated while streaming or while listening to internally stored music. Some are under the impression that it may have to do with 4G and some sort of interference caused with it activated. Others have been able to replicate the noise no matter what their connection type.

Not all devices are experiencing the issue (including the one I have), but the number that are affected, is growing.

Rezound owners, how is your audio quality? Hearing a static noise at all?

Cheers Richard!

i’m purposely NOT buying this because it HAS beats.

  • Justin Kos

hard to replicate the issue here, but i can confirm i have it
when the screen is on and no audio is playing i can hear a squealing sound

at the moment my phone seems to be cooperating with me

  • Jmartinez1228

Wanna know how to fix the problem? Use some bluetooth headphones. I just tried my old lg headphones on my buddies rezound and had no issues. It’s 2011 people use some new technology. That headphone jack along with every other headphone jack will have the same problem after time no matter how expensive your headphones are. Just deal.

    • Binglut9

Your answer is to use Bluetooth….come on man

  • Dfdf

This is an HTC issue.  I have had two HTC phones (Incredible and Incredible 2) and noticed the static issue on both of them,  When doing research, I saw similar concerns from people with nearly every type of HTC phone out there.  It’s sad to see that in phone after phone, they continue to have this problem.

The only “fix” I have been able to come up with is using a pair of headphones with an in-line volume adjuster, which allows you to tune out the static through the headphones themselves.

This is the reason that this will be the last HTC phone I will ever own.

    • Jim Ortmeier

That’s odd. I’ve had the Incredible 1 & 2, the Thunderbolt, and now the Rezound and had no issues with the headphones, other than on the first 3 the volume was lower than an ipod. I’ve hung out in the forums at Android Central, Phandroid, and the Droid Forums, and never saw any widespread problems like you are talking about. But if another phone is your solution, I won’t stop ya.

  • Sporttster

SO glad they test these new phones out thoroughly!…… yea…..I am…..got a Razr…..sure they tested it out thoroughly,too…..yep….

  • Anonymous

Maybe Verizon should stop introducing so many new 4G LTE areas and start working on making the damn thing work properly.  I’m glad to see a company use some profits to give us better speeds, but good lord, when the network is having so many issues, rumored to be causing a problem with the Rezounds headphone jack?  I mean comon’ Verizon, take some responsiblity, read the forums, realize that your 3 to 4g switches are broken, start working with these companies who are making the phones and work these things out during development.  We sure as hell pay you enough.

I got impatient and wanted to try the Rezound. Mine is affected by this issue, it is positively awful. The phone is going back, and no restocking fee, hissing audio is just plain broken.

  • Anonymous

Well, if I do end up with this problem on my Rezound, I will not be paying a restocking fee to verizon in order to get the Nexus.

Why is anyone surprised? HTC had horrible sound before, now they have horrible sound + a gimmick.

  • Jmartinez1228

Sounds like the headphone jack itself may be flacky. My og droid has static issues with any type of headphones, its the jack itself. They could have put a junk one in that can’t handle “THE BEATS”

My Rezound has no such issues. This is propoganda by the Nexus kids to try and rationalize their buying of a buggy software and hardware phone.

    • http://jbardrof.blogspot.com/ Jeremy B

Wow really? You’re going to try and claim that? I’ve got a Rezound, I love everything about the phone except the fact it sounds like an angry wasp is in my ear all the time. I’m glad you got a good one, Hopefully VZW can find me one that works right. Don’t really care about other phones, so no propaganda here.

  • Anonymous

At this point, I wonder how many issues the GNexus will come with.

  • Richard Durand

Thanks for the post Kellex, this problem started a week after receiving the phone.  Static out of the left ear bud is extremely noticeable on my rezound to the point where volume needs to be above 50% to block it out.  I have two other friends with this problem, and have found the problem on multiple rezounds at the local verizon stores. Very annoying to say the least.

  • Anonymous

as a bionic owner, i’d like to welcome all you rezound owners to the party.  i feel like i’m saying this about every new phone.  the bionic was a trailblazer!

    • Joelseph

Sounds like an Apple Fix…  “We are shipping you a free piece of black tape.  You’re welcome.”  - Apple

      • http://twitter.com/smittylinc JCS

Not an Apple fix, they would want to sell it to you.  Or have you send it to a “genius” so they could fix it for you, like the battery ;)

      • TheAndroid1

Apple realizes a flaw (that wasn’t really an issue) and tries to remedy the situation by giving everybody a free case.

This is opposed to other manufacturers who basically tell you to deal with it.
        -Thunderbolt with horrible battery life.

There ARE things that other manufacturers need to learn from Apple, customer support is one of them.
I bought a Thunderbolt from some guy on craigslist and a couple months later the lock button broke (extremely hard to push down and would not always register).  Because I wasn’t the one who bought the phone, they said that the warranty wouldn’t transfer and I would have to pay to get it fixed.
I bought an iPhone from somebody on craigslist, after a few months the home button didn’t work.  I made an appointment at my local Apple store and they replaced it that day.

I’m buying the Galaxy Nexus and my number 2 worry (after battery life) is that something may happen to the phone and I will have to go through a crazy system to get it replaced.

        • Binglut9

thats a lie…I bought my Droid x off Craigslist and just got it replaced because the screen went

          • TheAndroid1

Droid X is Motorola, Thunderbolt is HTC.

It also might depend on who you get when you call them on the phone (or email in my case).

            No, it’s not a lie.

          • LionStone

Yea there are also things Apple can learn from other manufacturers. If you’re buying your phones off CL you have no one to blame but yourself when something goes wrong. The TBolt still rocks…you were probably using it wrong. If your #1 worry is battery on a smartphone you should stick to a flip phone.

          • TheAndroid1

Very obvious that you are an Android Sheep.

“Using it wrong” – I guarantee you I know much more about Android than you do. I have been here from the start of this site, I program for Android, and have rooted and Rom’d every phone I have ever had.

Just because it was from craigslist doesn’t excuse the hardware issues that happen later. It was a manufacturing defect a lot of people were having online (look it up, hope you know how to use the internet “right.” Just in case I’ll post a link to a Google search for you: “https://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&source=hp&q=htc+thunderbolt+buttons+hard+to+push&pbx=1&oq=htc+thunderbolt+buttons+hard+to+push&aq=f&aqi=&aql=1&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=2281l6656l0l6909l36l21l0l8l8l1l247l3708l1.14.6l26l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=59a1bbd79307d996&biw=1680&bih=935″).

And finally the biggest Fanboy statement of them all: “If your #1 worry is battery on a smartphone you should stick to a flip phone.” Battery is the most crucial aspect of ANY phone. Once the battery goes out, everything else is pointless because you are left with a dead device. Battery life needs to get you through the day or as much of it as possible. A 4 hour battery just isn’t cutting it for any phone.

How about this? You go and keep worshiping Android because it is Android and I will point out flaws that can be fixed to make it even better.

        • TC Infantino

Wow, seriously you think Apple did right by their customers when ‘AntennaGate’ first happened?  The way I remember it was that when Steve Jobs learned about the problem that many people were having, he first laid blame on AT&T, then said it was the customer holding it wrong.  His first reaction “Tell them not to hold the phone that way”.  It was only after a massive swell of anger backlashed at SJ and Apple that he offered the free cases.  And I have read many complaints about customer service at the ‘Genius Bars’.  So personally I really hope that VZW does NOT learn customer support from Apple.  Steve Jobs was a douchebag who didn’t like anyone who disagreed with him, including customers.

  • TC Infantino

I have had the Rezound for just 5 days, but I have listened to music through the native program, PlayerPro, Slacker, and also used the headphones for movies as well and have not experienced any problems with sound quality.  Is this a day one thing, or does it happen gradually?

    • Richard Durand

This happens gradually, at least for me it did.  About a week in the audio issues started to arise

      • TC Infantino

Thank you for the information.  I will keep an ear out for the problem.

  • Anonymous

It’s probably better than listening to music on an Atrix. Constant fraction of a second skips and sometimes the phone just shuts off.  And I only have these problems listening to music.

Saaaame issue with the Droid Bionic. Static when playing songs through any headset, more noticeably on quieter parts of the song. Not exactly a tech savvy guy but could it have anything to do with the LTE Radio? Just wondering…

Here’s what Supercurio, creator of Voodoo sound for the Galaxy S phones, who has done extremely detailed analysis of audio chips in many high-end Android phones, has to say about Beats:

    https://twitter.com/#!/supercurio/status/139057320612212736

‘Nuff said.  As much as I can’t wait to get my hands on a G-Nex, I will definitely miss the Wolfson audio chip in my Fascinate, because that thing has an analog amp that is an absolute beast with the Voodoo sound driver enabled.

  • Negativerxn

    Look at that artsy photo.

  • http://twitter.com/HumanRacehorses Harold Goldner

No problems here.  Have had the device since the day after it came out (11/15) and tried it with 3 different pairs of headphones, 4G on/off, wifi on/off, etc.  Have run it with 3 different media apps, PowerAmp, default (which is the only way to get Beats activated) and PocketCasts.  Nary a hiccough or pop or hiss.  Some on xda-developers Rezound thread are trying to track to production line numbers, in case it relates to a specific bad batch of devices.

  • TROLOLOL

The static you are hearing is just background noise of everything exploding behind you as you walk down the street.

    • Rezound_problems

Just got my Rezound (after paying only $50 at Costco online) and when I plugged in the Beats headphones I can hear some background static noise- although low, it is annoying.
I also really cannot hear it when the music is pumped up, but definitely do notice it during the switching of songs and even when a song gets really low.

Does anyone know the details of returning a phone from Costco?  I know it is 90 days, but what about Verizon’s policy?  Will my upgrade be reinstated if I return the phone to Costco after Verizon’s 14 day trial period?
Anyone have any experience with actually returning a Verizon phone to Costco?

  • Anonymous

I had a similar problem with my OG Droid…that’s why it never replaced my iPod Touch for music.

    • Anonymous

I had a problem with streaming music (I think, though it was all I listened to). There was some kind of beep/static that always happened intermittently while listening.

  • Anonymous

No problems here. Headphones work wonderfully. Still probably will exchange this for a Droid 4 though, since I bought it after the 15th…Need a keyboard.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nblufire12 Nathan Patel

lol that kinda blows. GNex don’t let me down!

  • Interstellarmind

so let me get this straight. VZW sees fit to release a phone that has a pretty annoying bug that permeates through it’s most advertised and touted feature… BUT the G-Nex, which has already been released by the world, who’s volume rocker bug, which only happens in 2g and Google already has a fix for, must be held back for further testing?

Or when VZW released an update for the t-bolt that did away with voicemail notification?

come on, vzw, just release the damn thing, or just say you hate the nexus devices because they won’t build revenue for you (ie, bloatware, supporting the droid brand)

    • TROLOLOL

Or my Bionic almost 3 months later with the radio constantly dropping signals, the headphone high pitched whine bug, the battery bug, and who can forget the camcorder focus bug.  Glad that was released bug free and STILL waiting on ONE update.  Yes Verizon, you ALWAYS make sure your products are released bug free, except when it’s Motorola’s phone of the month club’s latest and greatest.  Do they pay you off or something?

      • Legoturtle92

I’ve gone through 3 Bionics and they’re sending me out a rezound. I really hope that I don’t get this bug.

        • Adam Brandt

I have gone through 3 also…how did you get them to send you a Rezound?  Were you still within your 2 weeks?

          • Emilio Figueroa

It’s under the exception to the warranty replacement. It can only be offered not requested. (try to sound frustrated on the phone)

I had 5 replacement Tbolts and when i called in just to get another one they actually offered the Rezound. It was over a year since I got the TBolt.  I wasn’t even expecting it. I was about to cancel my contract

      • OG Droid

That phone alone has made me switch from Moto. Ive had more problems with this crap phone than any rom or anything I ever flashed on my og droid. I guess the bionic was the “beta” phone before the razr.

        • Adam Brandt

You are correct, I have NEVER had more problems with a phone in my LIFE.  I was hoping to sell it and pay cash for the Nexus, now I don’t care if I give it away.  I am lucky enough to have 4G from all 4 providers in my area and since I am paying cash, if there is nothing on the 8th, I am buying the onlocked one and going off contract on T-Mobile.  Can’t spend 1 more month with this Bionic POS

          • OG Droid

Dude right there with you haha. I pretty sure the GNex will be out by the middle of the month; so i’ll wait. But I have to buy off contract and at this point I dont even care. I just want to break this phone and put it up on youtube or something for other bionic owners to enjoy in its destruction.

          • Adam Brandt

I know the PERFECT use for all the old Bionics…We should take up a collection and send them to a cause TRULY worthy of the Bionic: http://www.willitblend.com/

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

There’s an LTE radio in there. That alone could cause more bugs. You guys are ridiculous. You want the phone released now but then it gets released with bugs and you’ll complain about that. They’ll release it when it’s ready, despite how much you think Verizon is holding it back just because they want to sell more RAZRs and Rezounds. It’s a phone, calm down.

      • Binglut9

people with the verizon gnex said its all set to go and thatsbwjybpeople are mad……verizon just holding it back..

      • Notweird

I usually listen to my music in airplane mode and have not heard any issues. Then I downloaded Google music app last night and I heard the static. Not sure if it is the Google music App or the LTE radio like you said.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.yager Joseph A. Yager

I am able to hear a low static background noise.  I can’t really hear it when music is playing, but it’s noticeable when the song is quiet or changing between songs.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

This sounds like the issue others are reporting.

    • Anonymous

I had the Rezound for 2 weeks and it had that staticky sound whenever any audio was being actively pumped out. Bionic had the same thing.

    • Anonymous

This reminds me of what I used to get with integrated sound on a PC motherboard. Once I got a sound-card it all went away.

      Ya same

  • http://chrisbrownweb.com/ Qnowledge (Dominique)

I haven’t had any audio issues. Hmm.

    • Jim Ortmeier

None here either. The only time I’ve heard static on my phone is listening to a poorly recorded live track. So far this phone’s meet or beat my expectations. But it’s not the Nexus or the Razr so I guess it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.;)

      • LionStone

At least you can say it “beats” your expectations! :-)

      • http://chrisbrownweb.com/ Qnowledge (Dominique)

I haven’t had a single issue. I would say the Rezound bests the Razr. I’ve gotten a number of accessories for 50% off, and even ordered an extended battery for $5 yesterday. The display is amazing, and I am more than pleased with everything except perm root has not been achieved yet, but I haven’t given up hope. I still kinda want the GNex, but I am tired of waiting and all the negative sentiments about it that are released each day make it less and less appealing other than the fact that is has ICS. I am almost at the point where I can deal with waiting for ICS to come to my Rezound, either officially or unofficially via the DEV community. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/srice Stephen Rice

I have static with 5 different sets of headphones that I use. Thought I was going crazy. I have tested on wi-fi, 3G, 4G and airplane mode. Hopefully they fix it. Although I consider this a loaner phone til the Nexus comes out.
