Verizon Adjusts Return Policy For the Holidays, Will Give You Til January 9 to Return Phones Purchased on or After November 15

Verizon has been operating on a 14-day return policy for most of the year. Since this went live, we have seen a variety of devices get spaced out by 14 days to help decrease the number of returned devices. With new top tier Android smartphones coming out almost weekly these days, this move – while unpopular for the most part – makes sense. We have some good news though thanks to some eagle-eyed readers who noticed that Verizon had made a slight tweak to this policy.

Starting tomorrow (November 15), you can purchase a smartphone and have until January 9, 2012 to return it for something else. With the RAZR, Rezound and Galaxy Nexus all becoming available over the next few weeks, this is incredible news. If you are dying to have a new smartphone, but can’t wait for the G-Nex to finally arrive, then you may want to check out a RAZR or Rezound knowing now that you have until the first week of January to swap it out if you decide stock Android is indeed your cup of tea. You will have to pay a $35 restocking fee if you do bring your phone back. I guess that’s the price you pay to test drive.

Cheers Greg and Nick!

Jan 9th huh? Guess we have our new Nexus release date! /s

    • Charles Blackmon

yup so just buy a razar and take it back on the 8th then get the G Nex on the 9th

    • Anonymous

This was the same last year. I dont think it has anything to do with the release of the nexus.

  • Anonymous

Great but did you see the deal AT&T has. Buy a Galaxy tab 8.9 LTE and they give you a skyrocket or SGS2 for free. Granted you are stuck with crappy Sasmung products and 2 plans, but you get a free phone. Better than Verizons sh!tty deals. source: Android Central

I might just do this as a protest to VZW being so slow to releasing the nexus… 35 bucks for a rental aint too shabby. only question is, should i go for the razor or the rezound?

    • Anonymous

You don’t protest Verizon by giving them exactly what they want.

    • Anonymous

Thats your protest against Big Red???? WOW, YOU REBEL!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

I am going to wait until this weekend and if no news on the nexus I am going with rezound.

  • Anon

You guys think so small.  You think the entire universe is surrounded by the Nexus, RAZR, Rezound.

The reason they did this because of Christmas orders and people not getting the phone they wanted so they could return it and get the phone they wanted.

    • Anonymous

      Lol ya think?

    • Anonymous

You really think thats how everyone was thinking?? You are brilliant. I would have never guessed that..ever..I really thought this world revolved around the Nexus,RAZR, and Rezound..

      P.S. This was sarcasm…

  • Rob Becker

New GNex release rumor: Jan 10th. amirite Verizon?

    • Josh Wagle

      That’s what I’m thinking… sigh

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000395370412 Logan Lopez

This seems like a ploy to get me to get the RAZR now and paying the restocking fee when the Galaxy Nexus comes out, only to delay the Nexus till January 10th.  I am on to you Verizon!

  • Guest

Wait, then why does the first paragraph still mention the 14 day return policy?  It seems like the next paragraph contradicts it.  Has anyone talked to Verizon for clarification?

  • Mastaking

I can’t read the comments for some reason, If I purchase a phone for retail price can I return it for the G-Nex when it finally comes out? (provided that it comes out before the first week of january of course)

  • http://www.facebook.com/BenBGriffiths Ben Griffiths

Just another Big Red tactic to try to convince Nexus buyers to shoot their wad early.  Gimmick city.  Release the phone we are waiting for already.

  • Charlie

I could really see Verzon delaying the Nexus until the middle of January.  Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

  • http://profiles.google.com/drastik651 Jim Kalista

aww sucks for those who bought razr’s or rezounds earlier than tommorrow

  • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

Makes me wish we didn’t add 3 RAZRs yesterday now….

    • http://twitter.com/strifejester Justin Ellenbecker

Then again if the rumor is true and the Nexus gets pushed back I might as well just buy the RAZR tomorrow now.  At this point it feels like the Nexus will never release.  Will it be the Duke Nukem of cell phones.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Gulyas/709632554 Daniel Gulyas

That’s really tempting. I’m upgrading my phone anyway…

  • TROLOLOLOL

YEAH… getting one of these new fancy phones then installing all my apps and settings from my previous phone, returning it for $35 and reinstalling all my apps and settings from that previous phone on my Galaxy Nexus? NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Heck, I’ve done this so many times I can almost do this entire process in less than 10 minutes.  There are great programs out there that make it very easy. Appextractor, Titanium…

    • Anonymous

because it takes a whole 5 minutes to do that.

  • John Guerin

BEST BUY IS RUNNING THE SAME THING WITH NO RESTOCKING FEE!!!

    • Nick

Where did you see this? I can’t find any evidence of it.

    • Anonymous

Better yet!  I got my Thunderbolt at Best Buy and it was a good experience.

Got a Droid X at Costco and that is also another good option.

  • Dhuff44

To bad I can’t do that with this wonderful non data connecting BIONIC I have, they told me it is against there policy to upgrade to a newer phone. Have to love Verizon.

  • Anonymous

If it wasn’t for the restocking fee I’d go ahead and pick up a Razr or Rezound until this Nexus nonsense gets worked out. My OG is about 110 in smartphone years…

    • mic.is

I’ve got a 2yr old Samsung Behold with a battery that can handle 7min of conversation before it dies. What’s that in dumbphone years?

  • http://twitter.com/JasonTsujimura Jason Tsujimura

$35 for a rental? Meh, why not. Will certainly hold me over while we wait for the G-Nex.

  • Charles Blackmon

Well razar it is until the G Nex comes out

  • Anonymous

Only problem with this is if Verizon waits till Jan 10 to release the Nexus.  I wouldn’t put it past them….

    • http://twitter.com/JasonTsujimura Jason Tsujimura

      Ooh… that would be dirty!

  • Anonymous

This is actually a good idea for us OG owners, buy the Razr or Rezound and then return it once the Nexus is released, assuming it’s released prior to January 9th.

  • C-Law

I’m wondering what happens if you want to trade the phone in on January 9th but the phone you want is out of stock. Are you stuck with it or what?

    • Tyrian

Should be able to revert to the previous phone you were using. Just return and pay restocking fee.

      • http://twitter.com/WaltPartlo Walter Partlo

Looks like I will have to keep my OG around just in case the GNex comes out after Jan 9th.

  • TROLOLOLOL

a nightmare coming for verizon staffers who have to take in returns of the razr and rezound when all along people just wanted the galaxy nexus…

  • Abundis5555

This is why I love this blog

  • Anonymous

Awesome. Might have to pick up a Razr until the Nexus comes out. Bye OG Droid

  • Anonymous

Ok decision made! Rezound it is until I can touch a Nexus!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1338561610 Brad Allen

Nice I ordered a Rezound earlier today

    • Charlie

But today is the 14th, so you are a day early to be ellible for this.  Just sayin…

      • Anonymous

Exactly, Brad you gotta cancel that and order it tomorrow. Google the “free over night” shipping code and you’ll get it just as fast.

    • slappy white

Hahahaha…..you fail. The promo clearly says November 15th, so if you ordered it today…..Verizon will find a way to screw you.

    • Anonymous

Doesn’t go into effect until tomorrow. May want to cancel so you can take advantage of this.

  • Earleepa

With my luck I’d buy the rezound on the hopes of returning it for the nexus and then Verizon would hold its release until the second week of January.

  • tjmonkey15

I may just have to buy a Razr as a temp phone until I can get the Nexus.  We’ll see how long my will power lasts me.

  • Chuckles724

Release date of the Nexus: January 10th, 2012 :/

    • Phoenixy

      Incorrect.
      The correct is :December 1.

      • Chuckles724

You know that for sure? lmfao…i was just saying that since the return policy goes to Jan 9…

      • sparty569

Link?  If you dont have a hard link, please do not post rumors as fact.

      • GotSka81

        …2012

  • Aimesome

im shocked, I was expecting them to keep the two week return policy so that razr/rezound purchases wouldnt return it for a nexus.

  • Anonymous

sweet… Rezound it is tomorrow, then I can retire my OG to alarm clock operation only.

    • http://twitter.com/howzball Mike

Makes a great Pandora radio too, and stuff

  • http://www.facebook.com/rickmue Rick Mueller

wow. i am completely shocked.  vzw actually doing something customer friendly !!???!

  • Anonymous

my luck something will happen that I’ll get stuck with the gayzr… not worth it, I’ll just wait and maybe it’ll feel that much better when I finally get the nex

    • http://twitter.com/BlackTaxi2d Henry S

      gayzr

      i lol’d

    • Anonymous

I’ve been kicking this idea around the last couple days cause I can’t stand using this Moto Q9c for much longer while VZW drags its feet with this GNex. I really want to go pick up a Rezound while I wait then stick it to VZW for making me wait by returning it. I just can’t shake the feeling that I’ll end up getting stuck with it somehow. If we get a firm Nexus release date, I’ll go get a Rezound until it drops.

  • Penisaur

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • C-Law

Almost makes me wanna go buy a RAZR tomorrow and then return it for the Nexus just to get this damn OG Droid out of my hands.

    • Nick

      Thats exactly my plan tomorrow.

    • Jaime Ramirez

      ME 2

    • Alix8821

      Samesiez!

    • TJ Egan

I think I am going to go do this. Is there anyway this can backfire on me?

    • DadsBeenDrinking

I did exactly that when this info about the exchange date was posted on Reddit a few days ago.  Read it, then hopped in my car and drove and picked up the Razr, even told the Verizon guy “See you in a couple weeks” , he says “what? why?”, I kindly say “to return this phone for a Nexus”.  He just gave me a nasty face and walked away, lol.

  • Anonymous

Nice! Verizon actually did something good for a change…

    • gizmo

Yes, very nice of Big Red….now lets see, $35 times how xx returns….nice little money making deal.

      • Jon

they dont make money on restocking fee’s you twat, it helps cover the cost to send it back to the manufacturer to refurbish it. They actually lose money when you return or exchange a device.

  • Anonymous

Hmm I might get the Razr then tomorrow. Hope this works at Costco as well.

  • Anonymous

That does it…. I am going to go buy a new Rezound tomorrow to hold me over till the Nexus comes out!

    • Anonymous

I was just thinking the SAME THING! . . . Time to give the Rezound a test drive!

    • Anonymous

Just played around with it at Best Buy, the screen is really something to behold, the reviews dont do it justice…..Its flat out gorgeous

  • Mgc Crowley

I’m in for a RAZR while I wait for G-Nex. It was fun, OG.

    • zmancbr

My thoughts exactly!  I can pay $35 to use a RAZR till the Gnex rolls out.  Hell the plus side is that if I wait till Jan 7th I get an extra $50 discount.  So they will be paying me $15 to use the RAZR till the then!  Score!

      • diesteldorf

This won’t work.  If you upgrade to the Razr now, your contract will be extended and your $50 NE2 discount will be removed.  When you return the Razr Jan 7, you’ll pay the $35 restocking fee and your contact will be reset to what it was prior to getting the Razr but your NE2 will not be re-added because they no longer offer NE2.  Of course, if you get on your hands and knees and beg….anything is possible.

  • Anonymous

Should have called it the RAZR/REZOUND rental program.
    Waiting for my nexus.

  • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

In that case, just release the Nexus! People who have buyer’s remorse can just return their RAZRs and Rezounds.

  • Kevin Bojarski

So the Galaxy Nexus will be released Jan 10?

    • tjmonkey15

Haha that would be equal parts brutal and funny.

    • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly. Should’ve read some comments before making mine.. I can only hope this turns out to be a joke and NOT reality.

    • Booboolala2000

Same thing. Looks like Verizon muted the Nexus for January tenth.

      • Anonymous

except they said by end of year, which january would be outside that.

  • Anonymous

    Amazing

  • sparty569

I wonder if that makes it possible that the G-Nex wont be out until at least Jan 10th?

    • shdowman

      Anything is possible.

  • shdowman

If you dont like restock fee, you can always report them to the BBB for excessive fee. Very likely it will then be removed.

Not trying to be dodgy or incite shady practices. Just saying…

    • Anonymous

I think it’s a fair price to pay, renting a phone until January 9th (if you decide to return it).

      • Anonymous

I would agree. In fact, I think vzw probably loses more than $35 on a newly created refurbished device.

Pay the “rental fee” and enjoy the extra month to play with a razr /rezound.

  • http://twitter.com/ChrisSchoeps Chris Schoeps

What if I use an upgrade for a phone now, and return it when G-nex comes out? Do I keep that upgrade and get the G-nex at the lower price? Or do I have to pay full retail?

    • sparty569

You should get your upgrade back and use it for the next phone.

    • Jg127

I was curious about this too … same goes for the NE2 $50 off (last chance at this).  Wondering if I would lose that after the return, or if I would get it back to use on the G-Nex.

      • Sinofue

I believe you lose your NE2 when you do that. You’ll get the upgrade back, but NE2 should be gone (unless you can ask them to replace it – they might)

    • Nick

You keep the upgrade, I talked with customer service.

      • crispyBacon

Thanks! Just might have to pick up a razr to tide me over, especially if the nexus is delayed.

    • Jaime Ramirez

      DO AN EXCHANGE FOOL

  • Jaime Ramirez

    NICE!!!

  • Anonymous

So there goes the “Verizon waiting till return period is over for RAZR and Rezound” theory regarding the Nexus.

    • C-Law

NOT if the Nexus is coming out on January 10th!

      • Jason

        Thems fightin words :)

  • Jason Purp

That restocking fee is such a joke.

    • Anonymous

Your reasoning??? No argument, just curious (know you love the drama, so had to clarify)

      • Jason Purp

I don’t like drama. I’m just saying that no matter what, I can’t see them justifying a $35 restocking fee. Maybe $10, if anything.

And I’m being stubborn with my opinion on this. I highly doubt you can give me any facts/reasoning that will make me change my mind.

        • Anonymous

Well they can no longer sell it as new and usually it is $50 cheaper than brand new so maybe that makes more sense since you feel you should only be charged $10.

        • Anonymous

And there u go in that 2nd statement being a douche…..I didn’t say I disagreed with you regarding the $$, so no need to get defensive……Not trying to change your mind, just asked you to expand on the reasoning behind your statement, it’s how a conversation starts u clown….have a good night

          • Jason Purp

I’m not the only person that would have thought you were trying to disagree with me. In reality, you probably were. Have a great night, friendo.
