Galaxy Nexus on Verizon Could Have Better Than Expected Battery Life? (Updated)

According to the screenshot above, along with its owner, the 4G LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is getting much better battery life than I think any of us expected. After more than 5 hours of heavy (“lots of surfing” and brightness at max) of use, you can see that the device still has 45% left on it. For having a 4.65″ HD screen with an LTE chip in it, I’d take that any day. Most 4G LTE phones are begging for a charger after 5 hours of even moderate to low use, so this is potentially a good sign for those of us that were already contemplating the purchase of a yet-be-announced extended battery.

This device test was also reportedly done on LTE only.

Update:  Same source that posted this screenshot is saying that over time, his battery has actually gotten slightly worse. On average, he is hitting around 6 hours. Here’s to hoping we actually do get a bigger 1850mAh battery in it.

On a semi-related note, seeing a screenshot with a 720p resolution makes me smile. Can you believe that we are about to embark on a journey that includes an HD screen in the palm of our hand? And not too far off are quad-core processors behind them.

Soooo, does that make your battery concerns less frightening?

Cheers guy who many of you probably know that asked to remain nameless for some reason!

    Two words. Juice Defender…

  • Sith77

The HTC Rezound will be better

    • woozzy101

Right… I’m sure that’s what you told yourself when the Thunderbolt was about to be released. :)

      • Sith77

nope didnt even try the thunderbolt lol i kept the incredible 2

        • Sith77

plus you cant bash a company and black list them for one bad phone . look at blackberrys , they been POS for a LONG time and people would keep buying them constantly even though the software never changed . between battery pulls , servers down , email failures , resending books to allow connections , etc…….. ive been a big fan of HTC they make SOLID products . one goof up and im not gonna kick them to the curb

          • http://twitter.com/Justinwrites Justin True Anderson

One bad phone?  Eris ring a bell?  They have a history of bad phones and a proven track record of terrible batteries and terrible battery optimization.

    • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

The rezound is disappointing…..its a tank, battery life, build quality on the thunderbolt was horrid, reports of lag already…this is HTC bionic……..I know everyone likes what they like I just don’t understand how you could pass up on a pure Google phone?

  • Anonymous

If its heavy browsing and that why is that no where to be seen on the screen shot?

    • Keith Sumner

yep, lies “Browser” would be listed there under usage.

  • JMac726

So the release date is when?

  • Recognizer2 0

… patiently waiting for Zepfloyd to chime in on this…

  • Anonymous

    it’s magnificent

  • Anonymous

its no deal breaker, its not like the rezound or razr will be much better,

    • kretz

This is supposed to be showing off how great the battery life is, but I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thought this wasn’t that great.

  • Anonymous

JUST RELEASE THE DAMN PHONE ALREADY!

  • Anonymous

    Release date?

  • Tobias Funke

I ll believe it when I see it.

  • cowdog

Nice initial data point on battery life.  We’ll see if this holds for a larger user base over time.  Fingers crossed.

Battery life is the only thing that makes me hesitate with any LTE phone, and the only LTE phone that currently interests me is the GN.  The smart move is to wait until mid-2012 when 28nm LTE chipsets are available.  Unfortunately geek-want-it-now-itis (I have this in spades) can trump the smart move.

And this is what I like to read!!

who is this guy who already has a Verizon Galaxy Nexus? Name and address please.

  • MrWolf

Is this from the guy who recently threatened on Twitter to put a mod from another Android forum in the hospital?  I prefer to get my android info from adults, thankyouverymuch.

    • Ballisticn8

Is the mod he threatened the same one that has been posting up personal information of his such as his name, where he works, phone number to where he works, along with encouraging people to call in and harrass him? I’d threaten to put that person in the hospital too.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

P3 is still an attention whore and comes off as arrogant….he can say whatever I still won’t believe it…he posts things not for the good of the community but so he could be noticed….I hate that about him…I don’t need twenty shots of the home screens bro we all seen them before

        • Ballisticn8

I don’t disagree with anything you said Brian, and I am def not a P3 hype beast who thinks he knows all, I just dont agree with what was done to him by the “other” person referenced to by MrWolf.

So, if it involves “lots” of surfing, how come browser is nowhere on the battery usage?

    • Anonymous

Because its p3droid and most of the time he is full of shit.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

        Agree he is

    • miscreant

I’m on the OG - funny, I look at my battery use and it’s the same exact thing. I’m a HEAVY texter/email use, and browser. Your analysis is bunk. Every Android phone is going to pop up with the screen/OS/idle etc as being their primary drains. I don’t even SEE browser as a drain. Perhaps because it’s part of the OS? I think so!

      • TheAndroid1

        that’s what I was thinking

      • Anonymous

The browser is listed when used…go check your android device.

I just want the damn phone already!

  • Anonymous

Dont care bout the stock battery life, I want this phone NOW!

  • Blueethernov13

This has got to be a joke. All I want is a phone to last at least 15 hours easily…..is 10 hours all I have to look forward to?

    • Anonymous

Probably at max brightness you do.

  • Anonymous

45% after 5 hours with no other use besides system isn’t super impressive.

    • Anonymous

      Not unimpressive, just not exciting.

Even more good news about my new phone.  If only I had it now.

  • Lgreg64

is this the phone or ICS?

    • Anonymous

True, because there could be that data restriction application within ICS that might be helping.

  • Anonymous

Fantastic, now if we can nail down that elusive launch date.

  • http://twitter.com/Kentholio B-rad G

Then he posted screen on time.  It was just over an hour.  So, two hours of use…battery will be dead.  Not good.

    • Anonymous

That’s two hours of screen being on the entire time w/ 4G LTE enabled. Do people actually have a screen on for two hours straight?

      • Anonymous

Uh, watching a movie perhaps?  You can also browse for that long easily.

  • TheAndroid1

This is my number one concern for this phone.

  • Interiorposterior

Taking this with a grain of salt until further notice. Before everyone creams their pants, remember the Droid Bionic battery chart we saw like a few months ago? And how do we know he wasn’t using 3G and then switched to 4G afterwards of use?

  • Mctypething

You guys put up a post like this for every new phone it seems. Then, a week after the phone releases we come to find that either a) battery life is on par with every other 4G LTE phone or b) it’s worse. I can’t wait to read the post in a few weeks where Kellex complains about battery life and forgets he ever wrote this.

    • TheAndroid1

      U mad bro?

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1055490162 Andy Chu

Totally agree. Droid Life is a must for me to keep up with the latest on Android. Just b/c it’s a blog doesn’t make it less important.

And really, what lack of journalism skills are we talking about? Droid Life is usually the first to publish on lots of breaking news and gets cited by everyone else all the time. Since when was that bad journalism? I’m confuzzled…

          • Anonymous

He may be referring to the sentence: “After more than 5 hours of heavy (“lots of surfing” and brightness at max) of use…” If you were to take out the parentheses it is poorly written: “5 hours of heavy of use..”

I have no issues with a few typos/grammatical errors, especially in a blog. My (major) local news online posts have poor grammar all of the time! Most newspaper outlets nowadays hardly have an editor at all if they’re lucky. And when we’re looking for the most breakingest of news I wouldn’t want an editor to slow down the process at all….

As long as it’s readable, and DL is more than readable, I’m fine with some errors, and I consider myself a grammar police. It bugs me a little, but I suck it up… I’m not one to take a blog too seriously. :p

There is a big ol’ question mark at the end of that along with the word “could.” We are reporting news that has been provided to us so that readers can have all of the info possible to form their own opinions and make decisions on their own. If you take a question mark as gospel, then I can’t help you.

If you can find me a post where I definitively say “You WILL have amazing battery life, go buy this phone now, I am right” then please show it to me. We all know that each person’s experience with a phone is completely different. We provide info, we do not recommend things unless it is certain.

I  think that is not true.
Phone idle comsumed 6% of battery capacity.
          It means phone idle consumed 57.75mAh (= 1750 x 0.55 x 0.06)
As I know, phone idle consumes under 5mA.
As a result, phone idle consumed the battery for more than 11 hours.

And if the user used browser application for “the surfing” and the picture of “battery use” have to show that application. but it doesn’t.
I can see only android keyboard application
          It does not make sense.
          It’s a lie….

IF this is true, but, as you, said there’s something like this posted about every 4g LTE phone, I will be very happy and I wonder how much of this is the battery they’re using, the processor, ICS using new rendering processes, or a combination of all the factors.

Either way, this phone is going to get as deeply analyzed as every other high-end phone that hits Verizon and we’ll know with absolute certainty either a few days before the release or shortly after.

I follow all posts about battery life and I think you’re exaggerating how many times their reports have been completely wrong.  I remember them posting the Bionic’s battery screen shot showing poor battery life, especially showing it’s cell standby sucking up tons of battery which turned out to be very true.

This is a screenshot from someone using the device that we all know has been using the Nexus for nearly a month, I don’t see how posting what a well known tester has seen on their device as being deceptive.  I think that if someone sent them a screenshot of the battery life being dead in 4 hours they would still post it as well, that’s what’s important.

Except the Bionic has better battery life than any of the other 4G phones.

Bro, I admit brofore I thought Kellex was using too many questbromarks (?’s) in his blog posts brone or two times. But in a brahsitive light, there’s bro better Andbroid site that delivers the news without a bias bropinion of infbromation (i.e. Engadget and Gizbrodo). U know bro?

Edit: Sorry for putting using You _ bro in my paragraph please bron’t flag me.

Really had to think about that, didnt ya?

    • Jarred Sutherland

People will be complaining about the screen eventually. Everything I have read about Pentile just tells me it uses a few tricks to get a higher resolution but in reality the quality isn’t up to par.

Give me a real high DPI HD screen and I will be happy.

      • Anonymous

The display in this garbage is pentile lol. So far Gs2 has the best display. Lets see what htc brings to the table with the rezound.

        • Anonymous

You use the Bionic, how can you complain about a screen, when it has the worst ever made.

          • Anonymous

There are all pentile but the retina nor amoled plus.

So true. Battery life, battery life, battery life, I’m glad to see the issue is finally getting some attention, but phones still aren’t nearly there. I’ll sacrifice some power to have a phone that works basically all day. And like Mctype says, spare us the usual nonsense about being able to use [insert phone name] for a full day without charging. Let’s at least be honest with each other.

      • SA

And by the way, DL is far from the only blog site that is too kind on battery life. I saw Engadget’s review of the new RAZR say that phone could probably last the better part of two days on a charge. Not a chance.

  • Adam Wiggins

Waiting for this thing is killing me.

  • kianjudah

That is awesome!!! Just another reason why this phone is set to be freakin’ GREAT! And just another reason I’ll say ‘told ya’ to people who buy ‘those other phones.’

    • Anonymous

Yeah, might want to have someone proof read your posts from now on.

      • kianjudah

        ??

it the icing on the cake.

    but i need it NOW!!

  • Anonymous

That’s P3Droid and yea it looks good. I imagine we’ll be getting 12 hours easy with 3G enabled, 7-8 with 4G.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      I know it is. :P

    • http://twitter.com/Bigwavedave25 Dave Estey

could you ask him the throw out a screenie of the data usage during this time of “heavy” surfing.  just looking at content or actually putting the browser thru the ringer by streaming a descent amount of LTE data…?

  • Sumit Banerjee

I was thinking the same thing about the 720p screen when he posted it.
He also posted a second shot a few minutes ago, if you wanted to check it out.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

I never had battery concerns.  My current phone’s battery is awful and I still love it.  As long as the Nexus is better than that, I’m fine.

Also, where did this screenshot come from. Who is using a Verizon Nexus? I’m jealous.

  • http://twitter.com/mfg68 MFG

    Yay P3Droid lol

  • Anonymous

Ok, you officially steered me away from the Razr.

  • Dan

im assuming pre-orders go out next week at some point?

    yeah cheers P3Droid

    I NEED MOAR NEWS!

Seriously though, thanks for this little fix. My girlfriends Thunderbolt is embarrassing with battery life. And it took me a few months, tweaks, apps and a new battery to get my Incredible to last the day with my amount of usage. This gives me some hope for the future of 4G LTE devices

  • Bionic

That good.  Now imagine if you do what i do.  Say i need to use some heavy data.  I turn on LTE.  When im not using heavy data I turn LTE off.  This has helped save a lot of battery.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Toggling between could make this bad boy last for a full day easily if these results end up being the norm.

      • Anonymous

The 3 people I know with GN (not the man here) say it lasts about as long as the Bionic with regular use, averaging 10-12% an hour (LTE on and in use.)

        • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I think that’s about the top of the range too for these LTE chips. Would guess that most people will probably average anywhere from 6-10 depending on signal quality and use. I know that’s a big range, but these current LTE chips are awful heh.

          • Anonymous

You ain’t kidding. They can’t make those 28nm SOC’s fast enough. They also bring global GSM support.

I’m curious to see how my RAZR fairs, after I activate tonight when I get home. Reportedly in testing it does about 10% better than GN (8-10% drain an hour instead of 10-12) but I’m sure it’ll vary, and it’s still not great. Given it’s not running an HD 4.65 screen and has a little better signal reception it seems fair.

          • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I should have a Rezound in a couple of hours…I’m a little scared on that 1620mAh battery.

          • Anonymous

With good reason. I don’t have hard numbers like the others, but “bad” “not good” and “not much better than the Thunderbolt” were tossed around a lot. HOWEVER, it is supposed to be a very very nice phone otherwise.

          • TheAndroid1

I’d be more scared of Sense.  The only three days I loved my thunderbolt were the days I had cyanogenmod installed on it.

      • Turbine Tech

I can only hope. The closes 4G to me is 52 miles away, so I’m hoping if I just keep that radio turned off then maybe I will get some awesome battery life!

      • http://twitter.com/Chasemanhattan3 Chase Chick

I leave my phone on wifi a lot. Still not entirely convinced I need LTE.  Especially with the massive battery hit.  And not really impressed with the battery stats up there.  I need a phone to get me through at least 16 hours or so.  Believe me when I say I will be taking a heavy heavy look at the G-Nex.  Currently on a D3, rooted with SteelDroid.  Battery life is all I need.  And the keyboard really makes my day.  Cam software is atrocious though.

        Tough life.

        • Anonymous

16 hours of little use is no problem for any phone. If you wan’t 16 hours of heavy use I don’t know what to tell ya.

      • Bionic

I get a full day easilly on my Bionic doing this

    • Anonymous

What would be a good app to toggle to and from LTE?

      • Bionic

I downloaded “LTE Switch” on the android market. Its not a widget, its just a shortcut that takes your directly to the network mode screen. But it works.

    • TJ Egan

I have not had a LTE phone yet, are you able to turn the 4G on and off?? If so, I really see having it off most of the time unless I am browsing or downloading an app. Battery saving to the MAXXXX!!!

      • Anonymous

Yes you are… and you can even turn data completely off it you want.

      • Bionic

Yes. I have a Bionic. If you go under wireless and networks—>mobile networks—->network mode—–> then you can select one of two choices. Either CDMA/LTE or CDMA only.

Like you said, I only turn LTE on when downloading an app or browsing or uploading a picture to facebook. Other than that e mail and push notifications only require 3G speeds so why waste battery?

  • http://www.twitter.com/helmes/ Henry

The quad core processors scare me and my future children as far as battery life is concerned. I welcome the power though!

    • Dude

I could be wrong, but as far as I know dual core processors use less battery than single core. So quad core would use even less battery.

      • Anonymous

No, you’re correct. With typical use, more cores usually means less battery usage(to a limit).

The power usage for a core increases exponentially with an increase in clockspeed. So, if you’re running a single core at 1GHz it’ll use on the order of 4x the power of a core running at 500MHz, whereas if you have 2 cores, each one running at 500MHz, it’ll obviously only use 2x the power of a single one, while, for highly threaded applications, giving similar performance.

Of course, if you run each core all the way up to 1GHz, then you’re going to see quicker battery drain.

    • Sundar Ganapathy

more cores, in general, have led to more battery efficient devices as the cores aren’t maxed as consistantly (therefore pulling less voltage from the battery).  Additionally, nvidias quad core solution has a 5th ultra low voltage core that runs a majority of non intensive (gaming, video editing/rendering) tasks – including hd video playback.

    Extremely comforting news!
