First U.S. Galaxy S II Variant Revealed for T-Mobile: Upgraded to 4.5″ Screen, Ugly Home Button Removed

With still no official confirmation on different variants of the Galaxy S II by either Samsung or carriers, it’s been one big guessing game for most of us.  You can now scratch the T-Mobile version off of the list though, as a couple of sites released photos of its SGS2 over the weekend.  The Samsung Hercules (codename) (SGH-T989) was willing to show both its front and backsides, making tech enthusiasts drool their Sundays away.  With a 4.5″ Super AMOLED Plus display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and the removal of that god-awful physical home button, how can you not get a little giddy when looking at these pics.  This new U.S. version looks a lot less iPhoney and a lot more Nexus S-y – something you won’t find us complaining about.

This device will more-than-likely run on T-Mo’s HSPA+ 42Mbps network, but just remember, that doesn’t mean for one second that the Verizon version will.  We would certainly hope that Verizon wouldn’t leave us without their super fast new network, but the current batch of LTE phones are all thick, hefty tanks.  So the SGS2 variant for Big Red better have new LTE tech in it that’s ultra-slim, or we’re probably not getting 4G.  (Just my two thoughts.)

More pics after the jump.

And another front shot with that beautiful new 4.5″ Super AMOLED Plus screen on:

Now if only this exact version would make its way onto Big Red…thoughts?

4.5 inches is TOO BIG for me. I CANT FIT IT IN…

      F.  That’s what she said.

why do we keep getting teased with this? This is maddening.  release the phone!

  • Anonymous

If they have fixed the crappy GPS that was in GS1, I might pick one of these up when it hits VZW.

  • MrDinc

I’m not sure if i was a matter of fitting in the radio. I did see that it has a mini sim card though. If I get a chance I’ll post some pictures. I’ll have to do some spy work though. My friend is one of those “loyal” Verizon employees. He wont say anything about his unreleased phones. But I always manage to get sneak peaks without him knowing.

    • geedee82

      Please do!

    • geedee82

      Please do!

      • MrDinc

LTE + slide-out qwerty. I didnt get a chance to dig into the cpu. The device is my friend’s who is an alpha tester for verizon. He wouldn’t let me dig around too much. But i guess only sinlge core. I got to play with a Bionic and a Charge (before it was released) and both had “Dual Core” on the back.

    • Anonymous

Any specs? Dual core? Slider? Etc

  • Superior

That is one sexy ass phone. I love how samsung puts the charger on the bottom of their phones, perfect imo. Now for the 4.5, a bit much but would def. consider purchasing if it came to verizon like this. Really hope that verizon’s version isn’t that one with the keyboard. I really am starting to get fed up with Verizon and their weak ass lineup. Sprint would be great but i love me some great service just about everywhere i go….grrrrr

  • vmaster

UGLY HOME BUTTON?????? That was one of the main reasons I was waiting on that phone! Those soft buttons arent exactly the best thing out there. I have a samsung galaxy tmobile version, and the soft buttons are real easy to accidentally press and sometimes don’t respond. The home button on the samsung galaxy S2 was beautifully designed and matched very neatly on that square phone design.

  • JP

I really wish they would have kept the exact build they released in Europe.  4″ is the optimal size for a smartphone.  Any bigger and I’ll just want to jump to a tablet.

    • Anonymous

The original is 4.3″, so it’s not too much bigger. :P

  • http://twitter.com/iNateG Nate Gantt

If the GS2 didn’t have an incredible screen resolution, by making the screen bigger, do you think they used a different resolution? Probably.

    Gee I’m paranoid.

  • Anonymous

I wish they would make more 4 inch phones. Idk why they need to keep getting bigger I wish they had a 4inch lte phone then maybe it would have half decent battery life.

  • J Dub

All you hipsters need to stop wearing womens pants. All my manly pants should be able to hold this beast nicely. This is my next phone.

    • http://twitter.com/chqueed charles rogers

But what about your womanly pants? Do you not need a phone while wearing them?

  • Jake

This phone is too small. What am I supposed to do with all the extra space in my pocket? The screen should have been 5.4″.

  • Steel876

    Upgraded to 4.5 inch screen?
That’s more like downgraded to me.

4.0 is the sweet spot, 4.3 is a little big, 4.5 isn’t fitting confortably in anyones pocket.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ab-Gar/538974072 Ab Gar

honestly 4.0″ with high res 720p screen would be perfect..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ab-Gar/538974072 Ab Gar

that sure does look purdy. i hope the vz variant doesnt look like an updated charge.

  • Peter Bartholomul

Will this phone come with free pants with pockets big enough to hold this phone comfortably?

    • Jim Dandy

Get yourself some girbauds and call it a day.

    • Anonymous

Yup, comes with a pair of old school JNCO jeans if requested

  • Alan

Now that looks like an awsome phone, so more than likely Verizon will not be getting this version but will instead put out something that is sure to be a huge letdown.  That is unless they have changed thier “late to the party, last years tech” marketing strategy.

Why is it guys are getting all crazy for 4.5″ and girls are getting excited about 7″?

a phone with a 7″ screen? thats just overkill

      • Frank Farnsworth

        WHOOOOOSH

  • MrDinc

I can say with 100% certainty, the VZW version will be 4G, will be ultra slim, (about the same as the HTC Incredible2) and will have a slide out qwerty. I was playing with one last night. I promise!

    • jimbob

Ultra slim and slide-out keyboard are mutually exclusive.

      • MrDinc

Posting mis information is pointless. Take my word or dont. It makes no difference to me. People come here for info. That’s all I give. I only post when I have had a chance to hold the device in my hand. but I’m telling you the SGII is in fact very slim, LTE and has a slide-out qwerty. Screen looks to be 4″.I’ve held it. It pays to have a friend who is an alpha tester for VZW. I also got to take a peak at the official VZW roadmap.

        • Anonymous

So I’m guessing they had to add on the keyboard in order to fit the radio if this is true.  Yuck…keyboards.

          • Anonymous

            That would be sad.

This T-Mo version is quite sexy.  I would love to see a Verizon version with this same style, 4.3″ screen, Lte……and no keyboard.

        • Anonymous

Pics or it didn’t happen. Because the only slider was said to be single core lte which wouldn’t be the sgs2 variant. How’s it speed wise? Dual core?

    • Anonymous

dislike…with a 4.5″ screen, why need a stupid keyboard. If this is true, good job again VZW on ruining a perfectly good phone.

(and I don’t need the flaming regarding my keyboard comment, I think I am in the majority in hoping it comes without one)

Ok so going back to the leaked road map, wasn’t the Samsung Stratosphere the only Samsung smartphone mentioned on the entire list, meaning that it is the Verizon variant of the GS2 and, according to the road map, it will be 4G?

    • Anonymous

No there were other Samsung mentioned and some didn’t have 4g only stratosphere did which is looking like the slider that was shown awhile back

      • Guest…1

I wouldn’t really see either the “Samsung Illusion” or the “Samsung Plato” as Verizon’s version of one of the most successful smartphones of the current world market…

  • Anonymous

    4.5? Dumb.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

What’s interesting is that this SGS2 variant may have a Snapdragon proc instead of the Exynos. That would be a major downgrade.

  • jimbob

This sexy beast better be coming to Big Red!

  • Jcastle482

I don’t know if I would consider a 4.5″ screen an upgrade. I would go 4″ max and that is pushing it. I wish manufacturers would notice that bigger isn’t always better. Huawei’s Vision phone is starting to look more and more appealing as more and more of these jumbo phones come out.

  • Anonymous

Looks like a pretty sexy phone. I’ve never seen a 4.5″ phone in person, that thing has to be monsterous considering the DX with a 4.3″ screen is a beast.

Looks a lot like a nexus s(which isn’t a bad thing), but I was hoping for something that looked closer to the og GSII(rectangle phone). Lets see what at&t/Verizon/sprint looks like.

    • Madcow06

Agreed, love the look of the sgsII that kellex has, sans home button of course.

  • Thatsjared87

Dammit I need this thing to come out ASAP. I’ve been due for an upgrade since March, and my OG Droid has been flashed and flashed again so many times that it stops receiving emails and generally doesn’t work unless I restart it every hour.

      • Anonymous

I agree, 4.3 is my sweet spot, I could probably learn to deal with 4.5 but the text size would be huge, 4.5 would need at least qHD in my opinion. I’m not blind.

Also check the PocketNow article. It says it is using Qualcomm.

          • EC8CH

I don’t disagree that the rumor isn’t out there regarding the cpu swap, and I don’t disagree that VZW won’t try their best to screw it up further.  At this point however all specifics regarding the VZW GSII variant are rumor.

          • Anonymous

You’re going on gigantic assumptions from rumors that were reported by blogs. Nothing that’s leaked has been reliable.

Until official spec sheets leak, or FCC filings, I find it pretty ridiculous to say which such certainty that the phone will be using a Qualcomm chip.

    • Anonymous

Pretty sure that’s still just a rumor.

I noticed some people complaining about the screen size. These are probably the same people who said 4.3″ was too big but now own said devices. If you can’t fit a 4.5″ phone in your pocket, then you need to buy some pants that fit better ya hipsters.

    • http://www.facebook.com/TJHRULZ tjhrulz

I know the first thing anyone says after seeing an X is how do you fit that it your pocket. I respond “like this” *easily fits in pocket*

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1125014743 Riggs Royena

4.5 is pushing it in my opinion. Had the infuse and essentially got rid of it solely because it was just too big in the pocket. But i must say it was super nice having that much screen real-estate.

        • http://www.facebook.com/TJHRULZ tjhrulz

I think with ICS if they go no buttons option on phone and screens went to the edge of a phone 4.5 would be fine with me. Also anymore they need to be thin for me to want it, if it is to thick it just is to big for my pocket

    • Thatsjared87

I’m going to have a tough time fitting these in to my male yoga pants.

    • Guestdizzle

Yeah, I never have a problem fitting something over 4.5″ in my pants…what’s the big deal?

…Apparently…hipsters have major issues fitting something that is over 4.5 inches in their pants…

Which is why they all buy i*hones.

    • John

there’s a difference between a phone that will fit, and a phone that will comfortable fit.  I something I can fit in my pocket and not have to notice its size.  DX doesn’t fit this category.

  • Jak_341

    I like it.

  • Alphabets13

if the verizon version looks like this and is 4.5′..AND has 4g…this is where my upgrade is going.

    • Anonymous

I think I’ll have to agree with you, just one more thing: I’d like an open bootloader. If it has one I’m sold.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TJHRULZ tjhrulz

And while we are at it a gig (or at least 3/4 gig) of RAM, 1.5ghz clock speed would be nice too

4.5 Screen, no ugly home button, 4GLTE on Verizon and unlocked bootloader, plastic or not I’m sold. This phone looks great. Come on Big Red don’t let us down!

    • andrei

4.5′ is going to be one massive device.

      • Anonymous

Is it? Do you have the dimensions sheet handy? They can cut a lot of wasted border area off current devices. Would be easy to make it the same size as the DX.

        • http://profiles.google.com/pdenson Paul Denson

          FYI, 4.5′ = 4.5 feet.

Alphabets13 probably meant to type 4.5″… hence the joke “one massive device”.

          • Anonymous

I’m glad you described ‘ vs ” to me… It was a reading error vs being an idiot and not knowing the difference. Take my replay and put it with one of the other comments that think the phone is too big without even seeing it in person.

        • user01

I am wondering the same re: the dimensions.  I have been “meh” on 4.5″ devices as I feel like the DX is the (currently) the upper limit of what I can comfortably carry and use as a phone and a smart device but if the overall body-size was the same as DX….maybe….

        • http://www.facebook.com/tflournoy95 Thomas Flournoy

i have an Archos 5 internet tablet. it has a 5 inch screen and fits into my pocket just fine. its only a bit of trouble when i try to hold it and use it with the same hand. it can be done one handed, its just a lot easier using two hands. that said, i think 4.5″ will be great

          • Mario

I have pretty big hands myself. A 4.3″ display is more than big enough for me. I have slight reach problems using my Droid X single handed. I probably wouldn’t mind it being bigger if was edge to edge displayed.

      • Anonymous

I have the Infuse, and in the hand, it isn’t as hefty as you would think it would be. The only problem I have with the size is that a case really adds bulk to it, and that’s when you start to really feel the 4.5 inch consequence. I’m pretty sure it will be the same with the Hercules.

  • Dave

    Looks nice…too bad it’s T-Mobile.

Because companies such as Verizon aren’t as open when it comes to certain devices. Remember Verizon turned down the original iPhone and the only reason they partnered with Moto and Google was to regain all the lost ground from it.

T-Mobile and Sprint tend to be a lot more open and easy going in my opinion. While Verizon could careless about the consumer.  Yet it you want the best coverage and fastest connection you need to be with them.
