HTC Rep: Thunderbolt Gingerbread Update Coming in Q3

I know that a Q3 release of Gingerbread for the HTC Thunderbolt is sort of assumed at this point since they missed their Q2 deadline, but we wanted to point out that HTC service reps have been given the “OK” to spread the word.  One of our readers reached out to express his concerns over the various problems with his device and received a response back that included word on the update:

…We will certainly pass along your concerns to the developers at HTC. We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited to announce that the HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q3 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability…

Not surprising of course since we are already in Q3, but that should at least narrow it down to some time within the next 8 weeks.  Uggh.  And still no word on the original Incredible – we’re thinking Q3 for it as well, though.

Cheers Todd!

  • Mr.E

This better be 2.3.5 for all the waiting we had to do..

  • Brian Blumhof

Those close to Verizon have said that GB for the original Inc is coming soon, and likely before the Thunderbolt.

  • Guttatae22

Well like I said I’m not gonna keep bashin the phone I just accepted the fact that HTC was BSing and just said the update comes when it comes aye netflix would hold me down and make it a lil easier to forget about an update that we had to WAIT and WAIT for that’s not gonna be sense 3.0 but its cool though

  • To all TB haters, bitching about batteries — http://www.HTCexpress.com has 1700mAh OEM-sized replacements.

To all owners of rooted TBs, already running Gingerbread, Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sammich — good for you!

To all HTC haters, saying it either won’t happen even after we hit Q4 — I don’t care, cause TB is still a good phone.

    • Mrbrooks418

Those batteries work great. i have heavy internet and download use daily and i dont shut down any features. i use just 2 batteries a day. im on it from 7am till 1 am and dont shut it off.

      • Mrbrooks418

MY phone never sees a car or house charger.

    • tomNasty

You forgot the” is an” between ur name….stop jockin the TB i have tried everything and every rom this phone is garbage no rom can help this phone…..some1 tell me a good 1

      • You mad bro?  Don’t hate the phone – hate the operator.

    • Todd

Your suggestion is to buy (2) batteries worth 1700mAh each? So, when the first one runs down, you have to shut your phone off, take the case (if you have one) off, remove the battery cover and battery, and replace it with another that has been on a charger, and boot up again.

I realize that would take less than a minute, but it just seems inconvenient, doesn’t it?

  • andrew kelly

so did they miss Q2 for the OG droid incredible ?

  • Peter Bartholomul

Why wait for the official Gingerbread update when you can easily root and install a gingerbread rom within an hour or 2? Im using Gingersense rom which is a version 2.3.4 rom with Sense 3.0 and no bugs. HTC should just work on Ice Cream Sandwich so then XDA can get a leaked version and release it almost a year before the official version

  • jeff

Paying customers should not have to root their phone for it to work properly and as advertised . I feel dumb for taking back my iPhone for the thunderbolt .

    • Peter Bartholomul

good point. and paying customers should not have to void their warranty when they root their phone. i should be able to bring my thunderbolt running a 2.3.4 rom and sense 3.0 to a verizon store and brag that their service sucks so i downloaded the gingerbread update online. I mean they don’t charge us to update our phone so it shouldn’t matter how we download it.

      • Jon

Valid point, but it’s a small inconvenience to get the phone I really want and have it run good. Debloating is a good enough reason alone to root. it is odd the dev community can take official or leaked roms and make them so much better than what VZW feeds us. That is called money and greed.

    • Mrbrooks418

dont feel dumb for returning your iphone. Best thing you ever did……

  • Kierra

And most ppl dont root so thats not a valid response either 🙂

  • Kierra

Guess since its HTC and not Moto noone has any beef huh.

  • I really hope this update is massive. Add Gingerbread, Skype, gTalk, and the new lockscreen (This lock screen is capable of running within Sense 2.1). I honestly think that without all these update features, everyone’s Thunderbolt (and mine) will sadly be forgotten for good. Also would love to see a connection to sense.com, that would be sweet!

  • I in addition to my buddies were found to be following the excellent tips and tricks on your web site and immediately got a horrible feeling I had not thanked the site owner for those secrets. The young boys were definitely joyful to see all of them and now have honestly been enjoying them. Many thanks for turning out to be considerably helpful and also for utilizing certain superior topics most people are really desperate to know about. My sincere regret for not expressing appreciation to earlier.

  • Tknox30

Really could careless about any ota ever since I rooted my og Droid I have cringed at them . Chingys roms are the best out, ported kingdom com 3.0 gingerbread ftw!! Cm7 is good but I’m done with aosp for now

  • I definitely wanted to construct a brief remark in order to say thanks to you for those amazing recommendations you are giving out at this site. My prolonged internet research has now been paid with reputable knowledge to share with my co-workers. I ‘d express that we website visitors actually are very endowed to be in a decent community with so many outstanding people with valuable tips. I feel truly fortunate to have come across your website and look forward to really more brilliant minutes reading here. Thanks a lot once again for all the details.

  • Daniel Archibald33

It will come down the the last day of Q3 and then it will move right on by and be pushed til Q4.

Any bets that this is how it will happen?? I bet TB gets Gingerbread before XOOM 3G gets 3.2

  • royalewithcheese

Is Skype going to be available? What about gmail video support? Would love GB but I will believe it when I see it. Verizon stop defacating on us TB users step up to the plate like we did when we purchased yours and HTC product. This being ignored reminds me of when i had a motorola v710, just take care of us TB users and we the customer will continue to buy. HOPEFULLY..

  • Not soon enough. End of story.

  • Anonymous

Didn’t they say the same thing about quarter 2?

  • d-roids

bleh bleh bleh…. ill believe it when i see it

  • Jmsullivan231

It is what it is folks….the last update fixed the reboot issue, BUT the fact of the matter is we have been duped by both verizon and htc into buying something they haven’t been able to support as they advertised….last htc for me.

    • Anonymous

It’s my first HTC, and definitely not my last!
I went from my OG Droid to this, because after a few months, even with Launcher Pro, it started to lag way to much.
I’ve wanted HTC Sense since I got my Droid, and I’m loving it now.
And no, I’m not interested in rooting.

  • Radyoactive

Jeez, thanks.  I’ll get it just before I get a Bionic, SGS2, Vigor, or Prime.

  • how about an official Incredible update?

  • Zebra

You might as well prepare the news story for the end of Q3 when HTC apologies for the delay and is then excited to announce that it will be available in Q4…

  • Todd

Just out of curiosity, how many of you have the extended battery? I do, and I bought the Seidio ACTIVE case, which makes this thing even bigger and heavier!

  • I personally can wait, would everybody rather have HTC release a buggy update early? & then have all of us tbolt users pissed off? I don’t think so! I’m not rooted and haven’t had any problems with my phone since the last update!

  • Interstellarmind

will this coincide with the htc vigor release?

further speculating that htc vigor will be sporting gingerbread upon release?

sounds like an old=fashioned ploy: boost sales by halting a release until a new device comes with it.

    et tu, HTC?

  • Corey Marrier

Not gonna hold my breath for that

  • My TBolt is rooted, but with 2.2.1 – baseband, build 1.12.605.6

I didn’t update to 2.2.3 because at the time there were radio issues/ tethering issues, etc.

I assume all the issues have been resolved, would love to find instructions how to update to gingerbread and 2.2.3 with the updated radio, etc.

Any direction or link would be welcome.

    • Tknox

Check the forums, rootwiki or themikmik chingys roms are the best

  • Anonymous

I agree with Mr. — It will be the last day of Q3 or even early Q4. If for some reason you must have GB and can’t wait anymore just root and ROM. I was scared to do it at first (like a lot of you) but it was so worth it.

  • I have Gingerbread with CM7, and the latest 2.3.5 at that 🙂

  • Mr.

EVERYONE KNOWS THIS MEANS – SEPTEMBER 29TH OR 30TH, 2011.  SORRY BUT TRUE.  Has HTC spoke to Verizon Wireless about this update, because that might push the update back to the 4th quarter…  I like this phone, but it seems like Verizon or HTC has already decided to treat the phone like a step-child….. They don’t care how many people want the update, it won’t happen until people stop caring about it…..

  • Cory

Will this fix text message issue where sometimes when you send a text to someone, it sends to a different person that u have a seperate conversation thread going with?

  • This phone has turned out to be a fail.  What the hell is wrong with HTC and Motorola?

    • Its only that if you choose not to take matters into your own hands and update it yourself with a custom rom.

From a stock point of view, you are most certainly right.

      Motorola makes the Thunderbolt??

HERE IS YOUR SPAM FOR THIS POST…….I just paid a sheep for an iPad 2 (64 GB) and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for half a cat there arriving tomorrow by a camel. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again…meow. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss, who is a tool, for 2 fish and a dog which only cost me one parrot to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, spammersRus.com/death/get_a_life

    • Anonymous

Sorry, but maybe they will get a clue and stop spamming us…

      • redemed

Seriously??  This was a joke and yet it was banned??  Why does a joke get banned yet the actual spammers do not…..some people just can’t take a joke…

  • How stable is CM7 on the Thunderbolt? I’m on the latest OTA update. Anyone want to link me to the process to get rooted and ready for CM7?

  • and when the last day of Q3 comes, it will be “sometime in Q4”

    • Anonymous

Wouldn’t surprise me, especially since I received an almost identical email in April that said “the HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q2 2011”.

Root and flash CM7. You’ll be happy you did.

    • Steve

      na, I like sense

    • Steve

      na, I like sense

      • You can HAVE your Gingerbread and eat Sense too! There’s a few different ROMs that include the Sense UI in 2.1 or 3.0 flavors, and in some cases run it optimized without the buggy or bloated parts/apps.

      • There are many, myself included, running Gingerbread as a rock solid daily driver and living free of reboots  and redundant bloatware. And let’s not forget exceptional battery life!

      • Tornado Rex

Grab one of the 2.x radios: http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?222-ROM-KERNEL-RADIO-List-Official-RootzWiKi-HTC-Thunderbolt-ROM-s-List-07-30-2011&p=2312&viewfull=1#post2312 follow the instructions to flash it.
Grab CM7: http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?392-ROM-CM7-for-Thunderbolt.-RC1.4-Updated-7-29-11-20PM-EST flash it, done.

Who needs HTC, rooted, Android 2.3.4 and Bamf Sense 3.0.

      • Daniel Ra

I just rooted and put BAMF Sense 3.0 RC4.9 last night. What a beauty.

    • Hey Jordan – quick check-in – are you suffering from slow GPS locks?  Did you before on stock or any other ROMs?  Haven’t pulled the CM7 trigger just yet (still using BAMF 1.6 remix…shameful, I know), but curious if and what level of improvements you’ve seen.

      • Jordan

GPS is solid, though I was only on stock one week, so I can’t say for sure what it was like before.

  • viewthis66

good grief… my Tbolt has GPS issues… Exchange email connection issues… two important features for me. i really hope these get corrected with Gingerbread. extended battery life would be a plus but i don’t expect it.

    • Anonymous

Have you tried downloading GPS Status and clearing the gps cache and then downloading the gps assistance data?  It fixed my GPS issues.

      • viewthis66

no i have not. i will give that a shot today. thank you for the tip!

        • Anonymous

You are welcome, I hope it works for you.  I do it once a week and sometimes more if I am using the GPS a lot.  It has helped by OG Droid, Thunderbolt, and both my brothers DX’s

  • Dj_puerto_richie

what about driodx2 i feel like i got this phone where’s the update 2.3

  • Apollox1965

    Hurry hurry hurry hurry

  • i got tired of waiting and installed liquid thunderbread.  aosp gingerbread without all that sense crap.  love it.

  • Murphy

Yeah.. And Steve Jobs just died.

    • Peter Bartholomul

dont tease us like that. Some people might already announce their parties if you say that but then have to cancel them when they realize steve jobs is still alive.

      • Peter, I’ve been looking for instructions to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3.4 so that I can install gingerbread and cm7. Any suggestion?

        • palomosan

          Go here…HTC Thunderbolt – xda-developers

        • Peter Bartholomul

well first you have to be rooted obviously. there are a few ways to root. the advanced way which requires adb knowledge which i dont know much about so i can’t help you with that. the way i rooted was with the auto root. all you have to do is download the TB auto root program andit basically automatically roots the phone for you. but you just have to follow a bunch of steps throughout the process. nothing hard. just clicking ok or putting the phone into recovery which it will even tell you how to do. the video i used was on youtube. it even has the links in the description to everything you need to download. and then once you are rooted download rom manager from the android market and download w/e rom you want. the one im using is ginersense with is a gingerbread rom version 2.3.4 with HTC sense 3.0 and no bugs. the link to the TB auto root video is http://youtu.be/yQYoeFrJ1Jk

          • Peter, how kind of you to take the time.  I think the challenge is that I am ALREADY rooted, with 2.2.1, and the old radio.  So, I’m confused how to upgrade to the new radio, and gingerbread, and a new ROM? [email protected]

  • Anonymous

So if I get this right, the Bionic, which is MONTHS late will likely be out and have 2.3.4 at launch and yet the first LTE phone still wont. …lol?

  • HTC should also send out a bigger battery (1750mAh) with the GB update to TB users. That would make up for the initial stupid decisions which include releasing the device with a weak battery, software with multiple bugs and the worst, Froyo.

    • Just do what I did (twice, got my wife a TB too) and go to http://www.HTCexpress.com and buy two 1700mAh batteries which are OEM stock-sized (not oversized) and chuck that factory 1450mAh out onto the highway….

  • Tsr980

who cares ive been running gingerbread for months cm7 ftw

  • DaveDoug

Congrats for getting some blood from that stone, I’ve had quite a few “concerns” passed along to developers and HTC Support was only able to commiserate with me on how frustrating some of the issues have been.  Looking forward to some GB goodness, but overall the phone is vastly improved since the last update (and Netflix compatibility).

  • iramike

This would be great, but I believe it when I see it

  • KevinC

no big deal here.  would everyone rather HTC release a buggy update too early?  DX2 anyone?

    • KevinC

      i mean DX

    • KevinC

      i mean DX

    • Peter Bartholomul

If hackers can release a perfect gingerbread rom without a single bug a few months ago then i don’t understand why HTC cant release the official version this month or last month.

      • KevinC

The answer is obvious.  Sense UI.  They have to integrate it into the Android OS code.  It’s not just some software that runs on top.

        • Peter Bartholomul

I downloaded a Gingerbread Sense rom on my thunderbolt. The gingerbread rom is 2.3.4 with Sense 3.0. So not only did i update the version of the phone i also updated the Sense UI. All in a single rom. and with very little to no bugs. I’ve been using the rom for a month and haven’t even noticed any bugs. I only say “very little to no bugs” in case there is any. but i use my phone for most of the day everyday and use every feature of the phone and it all works perfectly. so what exactly did you mean by “they have to integrate it into the Android OS code”? were you talking about HTC or the hackers? because the hackers already did and it took them alot quicker then HTC

          • Anthony

What’s the name of the ROM you’re using? Can you provide a link? My roommate would be very interested in this.

I’m looking for one myself that runs on the first Droid Incredible since HTC is taking their sweet time with that one too and at this rate, I’m gonna be able to leapfrog Gingerbread altogether for ICS. Can’t tell you how frustrating it is to see EVERY phone get updated except mine this year, which has driven me to consider rooting for the first time until I finally find the phone that entices me to upgrade. I get it; Droid Incredible 2 is out so I should just consider that if I want to stick with the line, but I don’t want to do it unless I know I’m getting something good, and the DIC 2 just isn’t enough bang for me to justify the upgrade price, plus I want LTE. Not sure how well Sense 3.0 would run on mine though. Thanks for your reply if you have an idea and for helping out my roommate!

      • tomNasty

they cant every GB rom has bugs in it

        • Peter Bartholomul

I’ve been using gingersense on my tbolt with version 2.3.4 and Sense 3.0 for a month and havent experienced any sort of bugs or problems. it actually works perfectly and fast. so i don’t know what you mean by “every GB rom has bugs in it”.

  • Dean2359

First. Back on topic, what a joke, another 8 weeks?! Glad I rooted but I feel for all who havent.

  • If it happens before September, I’ll be happy…
