Galaxy S II on Verizon Dubbed Fascinate II?

Verizon’s support account is on a roll today.  First we had confirmation (that has sort of been retracted) that the Galaxy S II will be a 4G LTE device and may now have the name for it as well.  How does Fascinate II, sound?  Rumors of it being called the Function have been floating around for a couple of months thanks to some random accessory site, but Fascinate II just makes so much more sense.  The DROID brand all follows some sort of numerical naming convention, so why not the Galaxy S line?

And I’m pointing this out for the simple fact that the initial question was, “When is the Galaxy SII coming out?” with no mention of Fascinate.  The VZW support rep is the one that included the name.

Thoughts?

Cheers Dave!

  • Ernest

Verizon certainly has a weird way of disseminating information.

    • Ernest

And here’s hoping it’s not called “Fascinate” — names like that feel very patronizing.

  • digsoreos

Branding fail. Why not keep them all called Samsung Galaxy S II? You don’t see Apple calling the iPhone 4 on Verizon by a different name than the one on AT&T. If they’re supposed to be the same phone aside from the CDMA vs. GSM specs, wouldn’t it make a stronger brand to keep the names the same?

At least it won’t be called the Function anymore (or malFunction by those who might experience serious bugs).

    • Anonymous

Would make sense, but carriers want the phone to be slightly different hence the need for different names

I would like to show appreciation to this writer just for rescuing me from this type of crisis. Just after searching through the online world and obtaining strategies that were not pleasant, I believed my entire life was gone. Existing minus the answers to the issues you’ve resolved as a result of your review is a serious case, and ones which may have badly damaged my entire career if I hadn’t noticed the website. Your ability and kindness in dealing with all the details was valuable. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I hadn’t come upon such a stuff like this. I can also at this moment look forward to my future. Thank you so much for this impressive and sensible guide. I will not think twice to endorse your web site to anyone who requires care about this area.

  • David Hayden

Glad it’s keeping that name. Function just sounds awful.

  • Anonymous

“the initial question was, ‘When is the Galaxy SII coming out?’ with no mention of Fascinate.”
That was exactly what I was going to ask about.  That definitely makes this more significant.

  • Anonymous

So if the SG2 has LTE I would imagine between it and the Bionic all the other LTE Android phone sales will be a rounding error.  I’m sure HTC and LG will be thrilled Verizon convinced them rush those devices out the door.

Everyone lets calm the hell down.  I believe last I check VZW flagship phone Droid Incredible is now Droid Incredible II with no LTE support.  My theory is Fascinate and Fascinate II will also be 3G.  What a waist now how about the Bionic or IPHONE.

If you dont want the GS2 because of no LTE, why the hell would you go for an Iphone which has lower specs and also no LTE?

iPhone 5 let me stand to be corrected

  • Nex

Someone should ask if its going to have a keyboard, I truly hope it wont.

  • Wctaylor79

what’s so hard to understand. wimax and whatever att&t and tmobile want to call 4g is not the same as LTE. this will be a great 3g device but to thin for LTE radios.

    • Sbenson1189

      “To thin for lte radio”?
The Sam 10.1 tab has lte and is as thin as the fascinate.
HTC and LG are thicker….but all their phones are thicker than the fascinate.
So…… I don’t see the significance of thickness being associated with an LTE radio.

      • Christephor

hey there smart one the tab has alot more space to have an lte radio the sgs2 not so much

I’m guessing they mean this: http://androidandme.com/2011/07/news/details-on-verizons-4g-lte-samsung-slider-courtesy-of-mr-blurrycam/ and the rep is confused between the Samsung GS2 and what is, essentially, an Epic 4G 2. Are there two phones?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

I wouldn’t believe this guy, he already confused a GS2 and a galaxy tab 10.1

Last i checked the DroidX/2/Pro have been Verizon’s flagship devices for like the past year….

  • Spencer9663

Which will have better battery life? Droid Bionic or a 4g LTE SGSII?

    • http://profiles.google.com/gonnadie4thegov Jeremy Wray

im going to guess the SGSII since you can put cyanogenmod on it

  • Larry Mao

Oh god, no. I was thinking of getting this phone, but that won’t happen if it comes Pre-Binged. I refuse to support any manufacturer that includes Bing on an Android Phone.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gonnadie4thegov Jeremy Wray

Its not Samsung that put Bing on the original line of phones, blame Verizon for that one.

And anyway unlike with the Bionic atleast you will be able to root this device out of the box and remove the bloatware off of it

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Verizon made them do bing?? Did not know that I would think samsung has the final control of the product

        • http://profiles.google.com/gonnadie4thegov Jeremy Wray

Samsung has final say over their hardware, and they do the software then send it to VZ. VZ then adds whatever they want, from their apps, to bing, to cityid, and all the other garbage apps that pay VZ to be preloaded on the phones……

        • Dave

Verizon has sway and consideration in what bloatware should go on the device.  I’m sure it’s all apart of their negotiation process.

      • DBK

You can root the Bionic as well. You just can’t unlock it…..yet.

        • http://profiles.google.com/gonnadie4thegov Jeremy Wray

Who said the device can be rooted? No dev’s have had the device yet to be able to root it. And look at the Droid3, thats not rooted yet and the software im sure is very similar to the Bionic’s

          • DBK

They only made it unlockable, not unrootable. There is nothing saying it isn’t, so passing that kind of info as fact is wrong and thus why I corrected you.

As for the Droid 3, they haven’t rooted it yet. Doesn’t mean it can’t be. It will probably just be tough to do.

          • DBK

            *un-unlockable

(read – not able to be unlocked)

    • Joshua Granville

Who the hell uses the search button on the phone anyway?

  • Niemeyer18

I hope everyone has fun waiting for Android updates just like they did on the original Fascinate :P

    • http://profiles.google.com/gonnadie4thegov Jeremy Wray

Who cares, Samsung gave a device to cyanogenmod devs so you’ll always be up to date

        • Adam Elghor

          2 soon?

      • Adam Elghor

it sounds like it wont have a keyboard because if its the fascinate II then it should be similar to the fascinate and not have a keyboard…right?

I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panas0nic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, http://to.ly/aQrp

I’m hoping too. Motorola failed with the D3, hopefully Samsung doesn’t with the SGS 2.

Verizon has found a way to truly screw up their version of the all around best Android phone on Earth.
    Late release.
    Probably 3G.
Will undoubtably have a pathetic advertising budget compared to the Bionic.
I’m thinking Droid 3 stealth style release right after the Bionic and all it’s massive ads punching us all in the face.

    • Ranlil

      Where is the Bionic’s advertising????  I haven’t seen anything…

    • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

thumbs down on a physical keyboard. it will have a large enough screen that one is not necessary. physical keyboards are like so 2008.

    • tech

I used to think I must have physical keyboard (I have LG Env Touch). I waited for Droid 3. After using my wife’s Droid Charge for a while, I definitely don’t want the bulk of a keyboard.

  • The Dave

The name isn’t as good as the device. Unfortunate.

They know….they just cannot release the info yet (although they did let the 4g slip out).

We all know how much support Verizon gave the first Fascinate. Get ready for another Binged up disaster of a phone. You GS2 fanboys are gonna be crying.

    • Anonymous

Yep, for all of 3 seconds before I install cyanogenmod on it.

      • http://steamcommunity.com/id/cypherx82 cypherx82

Which will hopefully be ready by launch day, since they’ve had the phone for awhile.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

Something else I’d like to point out. Did the DX2 have 4G? No. Did the Incredible 2 have 4G? No. Did the Droid 3 have 4G? No. Looks like any device that doesn’t have a new name and is just a sequel device doesn’t have 4G. So don’t expect the Fascinate 2 to have it either.

      • John

That logic is not anywhere near logical.

      • Anonymous

Look moto still doesnt have an lte because they cant get it to work and look at the thunderbolt. That is why those two have only 1 lte phone between them. Neither could strike it right with battery and getting bugs worked out. Just saying. Hell moto still couldnt get LTE in their tablet when sammy already has lte in its tab.

      • http://twitter.com/NevadaScott Scott

Will the Droid Bionic (if it comes out) have 4G?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1332240301 Dan Graziano

S2 is easily rooted and will have CM7 by the time it hits Verizon, problem solved :)

    • LivinFree

Give me a break. Why would you compare a first round of device to new ones is beyond me. It is no comparison what so ever on what happened with a prior device. most companies learn from the mistakes, and for Samsung the Charge is a prime example that things WILL NOT be the same. So get a grip already

    • http://profiles.google.com/gonnadie4thegov Jeremy Wray

Unless Verizon includes some magic in the phone, it has already been rooted overseas and Samsung gave one to cyanogenmod devs. So everything should be able to be removed right out of the box….including touchwiz

      • Anonymous

As long as they dont change it like they did with the original fascinate then they would need other devs working on it since it wouldnt be the same as the international version.

  • Anonymous

Idc what they call it as long as they keep it with the specs for the international version +LTE.

That phone will “fascinate” me if it really does have 4G. I was hyped up for the Bionic a couple of days ago but it’s specs are already outdated. The only thing they’ve really done in 6 or 7 months of delaying was add 512 MB of RAM. Come on, Motorola..

    • geedee82

      They changed the processor too

      • Anonymous

OMAP4430 kicks the Tegra 2 out of the water.  4460 pl0x?

        • geedee82

Hell yeah it does, I didn’t mean to imply that it didn’t, I was just informing the OP how that was another one of the changes made from the original Bionic at CES

          • Anonymous

I know, but I just wanted to say it.  Dual channel memory? Awesome.

        • Stephen D

It isn’t significantly faster, but yeah, the OMAP in the D3 is definitely the 2nd most powerful SoC, behind the Exynos. And based on benchmarks, the OMAP might be even more powerful, but there’s no way to be sure until it’s OC’d to 1.2ghz. I’ve had a D3 for a few days now and this phone just doesn’t slow down.

    • Anonymous

I’d definitely bet it will have 4G. Sprint’s WiMax SGS2 passed the FCC today and AT&T will have their SGS2 on HSPA+, so VZW would want to market their device as 4G capable as well.

If it doesn’t, it will be a world phone, but we have enough of those already. 3G only Androids that aren’t world phones are basically dead to VZW at this point.

    • http://twitter.com/UbernerdLord Christopher Settle

They also switched out Tegra for TI OMAP, which as we saw on the Droid 3, is blazing fast.  They also changed the design of the phone to somewhat resemble a Droid X, which isn’t a bad thing.

      • Anonymous

Actually, there’s 2 variants. One uses Tegra 2 and the other uses Samsung’s own Exynos chipset.

        • geedee82

No they’re talking about the Bionic, not the GSII

VZW support is …not a good source!  but who knows???

  • geedee82

    Dumbest. Name. Ever.

  • Dtrainv2

They just stated their correction, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be the 4G device, not the Galaxy S (or Fascinate) II.  Oh well, we can keep hoping…

    • Anonymous

They didn’t say Fascinate 2 won’t be 4G – just that they were talking about the tab.

Like I explained above, every other carrier is releasing their SGS2 on their “4G” networks (yes, HSPA+ counts as “4G” in marketing terms), so VZW would want to do the same.

  • http://twitter.com/Koobie_2009 Koobie_2009

We should all stop following @VZWSupport it is just filled with misinformation and lies.
