Download: Stock Rooted Gingerbread For The “OG” Droid – GPA15

Our boy Peter Alfonso released an updated Stock Gingerbread ROM for the Original Droid over the weekend. This one is entitled GPA15 and from Pete’s words is supposed to be the best. We can never get enough love for our beloved DROID.

Link to download and instructions after the jump!

If coming from an earlier build or a different ROM in general, I would recommended a full wipe.

Step 1: Download this file and place on the root of your SD Card. (Changelog)
Step 2: Boot in Clockwork Recovery and wipe both Data and Cache.
Step 3: Using Clockwork, navigate to the .zip file and flash the ROM.

And as we all know, Step 4 is to enjoy! Let us know what you think in the comment section below. He also wants you to note that if you have no sound when making a call, you need to reboot once.

For additional info and Changelog head to Pete’s website!

Cheers Pete!

Looking for the BEST root instructions so I can install this. Thank you in advance.

http://youtu.be/0gujjtGzEZw  This was a huge help to me.  It made rooting very simple.

No way I’d touch this over ProjectElite 6.  PE builds are far superior to stock.

I tried one of the previous builds released on this website to get a feeling of stock 2.3, and it was slow and not to mention it didnt receive phonecalls and could not send or receive text messages. basically no network. so i went back to MIUI.Anyone tried this one? it’s been a while since my phone was stock…

Finally took the plunge and rooted my OG. Loaded this rom and it is pretty slick but GPS doesn’t appear to be working anymore. Any ideas??

    • Bahnfire Vt

Update, rebooted and all is well. Man this runs fast and smooth!

  • Amenemhat1

Yay, just tried it and it bricked my phone, NOT! I was running CM7.0.3, but the proximity sensor issue during calls was driving me insane! Now I have to deal with this M logo that won’t go away, so now I have to start over and SPR this thing! Night gang!

can this one be flashed on a droid running FRG83 (not FRG83G)?

  • chris

will our OG droid ever get gingerbread from verizon? idk how to root, kind of scared

    • Anonymous

At this point it seems very unlikely. I’m contemplating rooting but every time I look into it I’m overwhelmed by the possibilities and the gotchas. I don’t need another project, I just want a phone that works well.

  • Jessayspiffy

This has been released for about 4 days…

  • thebigmann

I like this better than CM7. For me it’s been faster, more stable, and less buggy. I miss some of the customization of CM7, but I’d rather my phone run smoothly than look cool.

    • Chaser457

I agree. I have tried several other GB builds, and Pete’s is the only one that isn’t lagging or missing calls and texts.

    • http://twitter.com/sparkimus Bret Williams

Same here. I was using CM7 for quite a while but it became buggier and buggier for the D1. Tried GPA15 and never looked back.

Love the GPA builds of Gingerbread for the DROID.  Hope Pete keeps it up, he is one of my favorite devs.

  • Anonymous

Its fast and smootth but it has none of the google apps, I.e. gmail, maps…. also there are no customization options like the cm settings or the liberty toolbox. Other than that ok so far.

When is the OTA predicted for the rest of us?

I and also my pals ended up studying the good procedures located on your web site and so then got a horrible feeling I never thanked the web site owner for those techniques. The ladies became stimulated to learn all of them and have in effect pretty much been taking advantage of those things. Thanks for indeed being indeed helpful and then for picking out this kind of good things most people are really needing to learn about. My very own honest apologies for not expressing gratitude to you earlier.

Hey guys need some help! just got my asurion replacement droid and rooted it… i tried to put some roms on it, but when i click install from SD card i get the message E:No Tar Archives found… ??????? I have NO clue what to do.. can anyone help PLEASEEEE!!!??

    • Masterchiefb117

Had the same issue too! How I fixed it was to unistall rom manager, reinstall, reflash, if you get stuck bootloop or “M”, load a back up and reflash an alternative clockwork then go back, then retry again. Also make sure the zip file is on the rrot of the sd card. Made that mistake too. Don’t need to alter file name. You should be set. Running it right now and I am pleased by speeds. Also had my cpu overclocked just to add even more speed. Overclocking at 1gz. Hope this works for you.

I just want to say, I miss my OG =( But I do love my TB =)

  • FortitudineVincimus

I tried 3-4 times to load this and it loaded fine BUT I lost and have no notification bar! as well, the rows of widgets seem more spread out almost like it pushed the notification bar off the top of the screen, which is not the case. I even hit the Settings > Notification button and nothing happens… WTF?

nope, just did a battery stats wipe . .

    • DigitalEnforcer

Ok, I really don’t understand anything about kernels. I’m using whatever CM 7.0.3 has and it seems ok I guess… usually lasts about 8 hours maybe on limited use. Where can I get more understanding of kernels and how to use and install them?

Just do it.  I can compare it to CM703, Liquid Gingerbread 1.85 and Steel Droid 6.3 and so far GPA15 (not the RC) is the best.

    • FortitudineVincimus

yes, the OG droid can handle this.. the OG droid is what this is for

      • eddieonofre

I know that is for th OG but i tried the GPA14 i think it was and it got the same problems,i am gonna give a try to GPA15 to see how it does

I love how pete says he Enabled a  program menu, when it was built in by the manufacturer and all you have to do is dial their # plus numbers, lmao what a joke taking credit for something hat has been there since the birth of OGD… Just like when he recompiled the recorder app and made it a paid app on the market… hell he even used the original icon from the original program…

    • Anonymous

He has that in the changelog because it was broken in one of the previous builds.

Make sure you install Pete’s LV Kernel as well… save some battery life!  Also, GPA16 is supposed to be Android 2.3.4.  Two thumbs up!

If Pete keeps it up, I give it 6 months until his work is responsible for making the OGD self-aware.

I seem to be having a few difficulties that maybe a reboot or 2 will fix. One is the LED notification, which I know is a huge problem in GB roms. There’s an ap that fixes it, but I’d rather not have one more thing running all the time.

It also seemed like some of my settings weren’t saved after I reset them after flashing. Facebook sync was off instead of “sync with existing” after I rebooted and vibrate notifications turned off on their own it seemed, too, as well as Gmail stopped syncing for a bit. Any luck with these?

I had some trouble installing this initially, but I did some checking around and found the solution.  Don’t clear Dalvik cache.  So far I’m impressed.  Very smooth.  Pete is a fantastic developer and he’s put out quality ROMS for the OG droid.

Same thing happened with me. Clearing Dalvik Cache made it boot loop. Not sure why it would be, but thought I would let fellow OG Droid owners know.

      • Anonymous

When I installed this I didn’t clear Dalvik cache and now it is stuck on the ‘M’ logo during bootup. How do I get the phone on to use it?

        • Masterchiefb117

Get into recovery and restore from a back up. You might need to reflash clockwork and retry again.

  • Tkampka

Grrrrrreat!! Ive been using this since sat. Its the best he has done ever! Way to go pete.

  • VNT8GDROID

Slippery smooth. Best build yet by Pete. Was on CM7 but some parts seemed to do their own thing. Keep it up Pete….My OG Droid is flying and everything works great.

  • SamL

I’m liking the new GPA15. Runs smooth and has the feature I wanted most on the phone… a restart option. When holding down the power button, options pop up as usual for the Airplane mode, Silent Mode, and Power off. Reboot is now an option. Great addition!

  • http://twitter.com/kirilv Kiril

Yes, Pete has gone far from the original GPA10 build, and most notably, solved a memory issue caused by the low amount of RAM (with the help of some other devs). I’ve been using his ROMs since he started working with gingerbread.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Forte/542650247 Michael Forte

Ahh I loved my OG. If it didn’t have that measly 256mb of RAM I wouldn’thave upgraded to the Thunderbolt.

    • Jamesredman47

Do u know a link to root my d1 with no computer

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Emaw-Kennedy/504157652 Michael Emaw Kennedy

there used to be a root app on the market

        • holycrap

you can only use Root apps if you are on 2.1, I don’t think you can do it without a PC if you upgraded to 2.2

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FI37YRBS3YPLXJJYIRLXXENBAM T

z4root used to work a while back on like FRG22D or somethin but the newer updates z4root can no longer root so you’ll prob have to use SuperOneClick or somethin with a PC

thunderbolt sucks, thought about upgrading to it from ogd but couldnt justify it for what it has, sorry, even cant justify the droid charge, neither of these devices are flagship / game changers regardless of their buggy 4g capabilities

Did you upgrade from GPA14? Can you upgrade without wiping?

Yes, you actually can. There is no need to wipe when upgrading from Pete’s GPA ROMs.

Can CM7 play music from lets say Pandora and do other stuff at once without closing pandora due to not enough memory ? Cause Pete’s roms can and thats what got me sold .

        • eddieonofre

do they really can? i have tried an it does kill app as it does CM 7, thus i’m still on CM6

          • Princesation

Mine works . You sure you tried it ? Cause its on Pete’s changelog . He fixed the memory loss problem

          • eddieonofre

yep I tried the version 14 or 13 dont remember, but by then that change was in the change log and still had problems, i mean i am not being peeky with Pete coz i know he has great ROMs, it is just that there is no GB for my OG

          • Princesation

oh … wanna trade OG’s ? hahaha mine has a crack on the inside of the screen . idk how it happened lol

what kind of “other stuff” caused Pandora to close? i can browse the web, do some yelping, email, gmail, etc. with Pandora playing

          • Princesation

Are you using an OG Droid ? Cause I am . And CM7 does kill apps

          • Anonymous

yes, OG Droid. i haven’t had a problem with Pandora getting killed, but i don’t use it all the time. that’s why i was wondering what programs have had issues to kill Pandora.

          • Princesation

well i dont think its the programs killing it . i think its the memory loss problem with the ram

          • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

do a search for the fix.  The program is called auto killer, and their is another program.  Both require root, but it allows you to manually set the memory settings before other programs are killed.  I changed it to a default “mild” setting and have been able to multi-task better and play angry birds for longer than 5 min intervals.

          • Anonymous

That’s my biggest complaint w/CM7. Pandora, Amazon, Tune-In, they all stutter and close when I try to do anything else. I love CM7 but this is annoying, since I spend two hours each day commuting on a train and really do want to listen to music while I do other things.

        • http://profiles.google.com/frayserboy Mike Cunt

ummmm ya, running cm7 with pandora here, never run into low memory situations, cm7 has the option to allow the purging of assets aggressively to save memory…

I like CM7 better than this (had this since yesterday).  Only beef w/CM7 is that Exchange email stops syncing.  So far, this is the only GB ROM that Exchange is not having issues besides Project Elite 5.0.2 (because they have an option to lock Email into memory).  Wish CM team could add that feature, then it would be the biz-omb.

  • Mr.Joe

     I’m liking PE6 beta.
