Rumor: Motorola Prepares the Jet and Bullet as its First Tegra 3 Devices, Headed for Q1 2012?

Everyone ready for a couple of massive rumors?  First off, we should probably let you know that this report has not been confirmed by a second source, something we always try to do before posting, unless of course we have photo evidence.  So proceed with caution, feel free to question it, and just know that it’s information we felt needed to be passed on.  And who doesn’t love 7-month long conversations about rumored devices, anyway?

________________________________________

Here is the deal.  We’ve been tipped to two new Motorola devices under development that will be the first from Moto to run NVIDIA’s new Tegra 3 (Kal-El) quad-core processor and are currently scheduled for either a Q1 2012 unveiling or release (We’re thinking unveiling – CES 2012 anyone?).

Motorola Bullet

Bullet (obvious codename)  is the non-keyboarded of the two.  Will sport a 4.3″ qHD screen, Tegra 3 (Kal-El) quad-core processor, at least 1GB DDR2 RAM (possibly 1.5GB), 16GB on-board storage, NFC chip, and a redesigned sensor to provide its new 12MP camera with amazing photos.  This phone will launch before the Jet.

Motorola Jet

Jet (another codename) is the keyboarded version of the two.  Will sport a 4″ qHD screen, Tegra 3, 1 to 1.5GB of DDR2 RAM, 16GB on-board storage, same new 12MP camera as the Bullet, NFC chip, and a fully redesigned chicklet-style keyboard.

________________________________________

Crazy, right?  Like I said at the beginning of the post, I was unable to confirm these with any of our other sources, so you’ve got to take them for what they are.  With that said though, I do want to point out a couple of things to help this report.

First, the mention of the Tegra 3 in a phone coming in Q1 of 2012 matches up almost perfectly to what NVIDIA told us all back at MWC.  They fully expect to be ready to ship their quad-core beasts in handhelds by the end of 2011 (tablets this summer).

The second thing has to do with the new camera sensor that was brought up multiple times.  A new camera sensor is something that I’ve heard mentioned from some close friends, as one of the major focuses of Motorola going forward as they’ve realized their camera technology is not on-par with competitor’s phones.

Lastly, we have no idea what carriers these would end up on, although the early word is that both are 4G LTE, so we’ll assume Verizon.

Do I truly believe that we’ll see these phones in Q1 of 2012, though?  It wouldn’t surprise me, but again, 7 months in this industry is an eternity and things change so quickly that it’s hard to say for sure.  These could be two phones on a drawing board somewhere and in 2 months will look 100% different with completely tweaked specs.  Rumor, people.

And as always, we’ll continue digging around the interwebs and in the brains of our closest insiders to see what else we can find out.

maybe the motorola jet is the motorola droid 3

april fools? these devices would probably launch at the of 2012, well thats what i think.. carriers are barely launching dual core processors this year, im sure they want to make a lot of profit of those first before they release some quad core processors.. thats my opinion.

  • Anonymous

two questions… one when you say chicklet keyboard do you mean black berry or slider? and more importantly…
what would you say is the likely hood of motorola putting that unlocked bootloader app that everyone on their facebook was talking about on say the Jet :)

    • Anonymous

      Slider

  • Brnsktingdieskting18

    Boosh!!! Time to start saving

  • Anonymous

Damn…why even bother with Tegra 2 now :P

…still lovin’ my OG Droid btw. 17 months old and counting.

  • Bunie

Not to be a downer but. Eventually, Motorola will make a Tegra3 phone. and by that time, phones will generally have 1 to 2GB of ram. and i could make up any rumored “Code name” i please. I could say “The Motorola Ghost comes out in 4th quarter of 2012, featuring a Tegra 4 processor, 2.5GB of ram, 32GB of internal storage, and 16GB Camera”, someone else would see it and post it, and theres two sources, etc. But at this point a phone we KNEW was going to exist eventually, putting a “code name” on it, doesnt make it more real.

PS: Isn’t “Motorola Ghost” an epic name for a phone? :D

  • Anonymous

Nope its a separate device than the targa, targa has tegra 2 4g

  • Anonymous

Its a new, larger sensor not the old CMOS sensors

  • Anonymous

Yes the bootloaders may be unlockable like the xoom

  • Johnny

Apparently, they don’t understand that Increasing the megapixel count does not equal better photos. Their camera is already doomed to begin with now knowing that it’s 12mp.

  • Anonymous

    May have unlockable bootloaders

  • Anonymous

    Keep. Moving. Forward.

There’s never a good time to buy a phone, because there is always something better around the bend. It’s why you buy the network, like 4G LTE – many fewer changes there. And then you hope and pray that it can support success.

  • SugaShane

This blog has more rumors than perez hilton’s.

    • Mr. Joe

Yeah, but Kellex is a lot hotter then Perez.

  • Anonymous

Wow. If those specs are close to what these phones might actually end up having (specifically the RAM), they will be amazing devices.

  • Kevin Jellison

I think Motorola should focus on releasing phones that they’ve already announced (Bionic), instead of teasing everyone with mythical creatures! (I know, it’s just a rumor)

  • Anonymous

Oh my god. I am drooling and I’m not going to upgrade until one of these come out.

  • Droidlife

Motorola could be planning a smartphone with better specs than our home computers and I’m sure many of us still wouldnt care too much. The locked bootloaders just aren’t worth it. Custom roms have doubled the useful life and performance of my old Droid1, I’ll never buy a phone that can’t be modified.

  • Anon

Hmmm…it seems that the bullet is the fabled targa.

    Definitely looking to get it.

  • Zach

Early next year is perfect since that’s when I’m due for an upgrade but locked bootloaders have me worried.

  • Bob G

more interested in the camera sensor more than anything else

too bad by the time I upgrade from my Atrix in 2 years, they’ll probably have Tegra 4 and a camera sensor as large as my face but compacted into the size of a M&M

  • Mr.Joe

What the hell is the point of getting the targa or bionic now? Jet sounds like my kind of phone.

  • Darren Brooke

The Jet sounds like win to me. No reason to get too excited though. I’m still waiting for the Droid 3… this will be the next “next” thing to get excited about… haha.

  • FortitudineVincimus

    dual-core and quad-core processors are for pu*****, I want a deca-core

  • Anonymous

I’ll wait for the octo-core and 25 MP camera. My next phone must have at least 15 GB of RAM. If you buy the Bullet, you’ll bite the bullet when the next great thing comes out. No thanks.

  • Anonymous

And Verizon doesn’t understand why doing away with 1 year contracts and early upgrades is a problem?

    • FortitudineVincimus

oh, they fully understand. what they understand is that there are a lot of suckers and chumps out there who just have to have the latest & greatest at every turn and are willing to spend $800 a year on a new phone so why not hit them even more now as they are not going to stop being suckers and chumps due to VZW’s changes

      • Darren Brooke

Agreed. Besides, it seems like lately they have decided to sell phones on 2-year contract at 1-year contract prices considering this $299 business… they’re going to make a killing on it.

      • Anonymous

What kind of retarded statement is that? I’m a sucker because I like technology? I go to work and pay my bills and taxes. If I have a little disposable income and I like gadgets, I don’t see anything wrong with me buying the latest and greatest devices. I would be a sucker if I paid $300 for a Droid Charge. I’m not, however, a sucker for being excited about Tegra 3 devices. If you don’t like technology then GTFO of tech blogs. And if McDonald’s isn’t paying you enough to buy nice things, get your Devry degree and find a better job.

        • Mctypething

So if someone isn’t stupid enough to always buy the latest and greatest, that must mean he works at McDonalds. Great logic there you idiot.

          • Anonymous

What is it with you people? That wasn’t my logic at all. He threw a completely unnecessary insult at me so I threw one back. I guess that’s why I get for feeding trolls.

And again I’m being called stupid for keeping my tech up to date. I’ve never seen so many anti-technology people on a technology website.

        • Mctypething

  • Anonymous

Too much fun rooting, and playing with custom roms. Thanks anyway Moto!

  • Anonymous

Until they can get their Tegra 2 device(s) working properly, I see no promise their Tegra 3 devices will be worth my money and time. Crossing my fingers, but I worry this spec-race will only produce hefty, expensive unfinished devices.

*drool* My D2G is only 5 months old, but there is nothing like the rush of an upgrade! I’ll be dreaming of that Jet for the next year….love the idea of redesigning the keyboard because you know, that’s the only thing I miss from BB.

  • Pcman1911

  • Whatinthe23

My only incentive for waiting is the fact that my contract isn’t up till March 2012. Bring on the quad cores! Maybe…

  • http://twitter.com/dewguzzler Jesse Perkins

now i would love the “bullet” if only the bootloader isnt locked down or at least able to unlock it. by the time the rumors are true ill be ready to upgrade my DX lol

  • Calculatorwatch

At least their code names have gotten a lot better since the days of the “Shoals”

I want to be excited about Motorola phones but until someone figures out how to get past a locked bootloader (or Motorola figures out how to not include one) I really just cant.

Yay! Time to prepare about 50 more emails for motorola explaining why I wont buy a phone with a locked bootloader. Oh! We also need to start another petition and answer more facebook questions!

Hah, moving on, thanks for your time Moto but I won the Droid X in @DroidLanding and I only purchased the OG. you will not get anymore of my money for being anti-AOSP and open.

Q1 2012… This means we’ll “see” them at CES. They’ll be delayed in early spring. They’ll be released in late summer.

I love rumors, but I think it’s time to start having contests to see who can guess actual release dates. BTW: Bullet is a perfect name for the shot Moto is taking at its head if it continues to screw up its phones.

Tegra 3 all the way. They already have a working silicone of the Kal-El chip shown back in February to the press. I can totally believe this rumor.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, but it’ll probably be awhile. They had working Tegra 2s at the beginning of last year, ready to go in retail products. I’m thinking we’ll see our first Kal-El stuff (other than Chinese crap) by summer 2012.

Hopefully Moto starts to unlock the bootloader.

    • Anonymous

Just what I was thinking, will (one of) these be unlocked? The eternal question is do I upgrade in November/December or wait until January/February? I just upgraded a month ago to an incredible so I won’t be that far behind…

      • Anonymous

I’m in the same boat. Should I upgrade now to a Thunderbolt? A Bionic in a few months? Or one of these behemoths?

        • Anonymous

Thunderbolt now, beasts latee. These may have unlockable bootloaders like the xoom

          • Anonymous

So I should get the Thunderbolt now????

I’m all about the Rooting and Custom ROM

          • Anonymous

Ya the thunderbolt is the best choice because the rest of the phones coming out this year aren’t much better. But when those 2 come out in 2012 then you would buy then because they will be a big upgrade over the thunderbolt.

          • Anonymous

So I shouldn’t even wait for the Bionic?

            Droid charge a waste too?

          • http://twitter.com/SoDroid SoDroid

Droid Charge is a waste. But the Bionic, which is now rumored to be the Targa we heard about a couple months ago, looks pretty damn awesome. If the Targa is indeed the codename for the “new” Bionic, it looks like it has a ton of potential…depending on the bootloader of course :) And it should be out sometime this quarter, I guess. That’s what ‘they’ say anyway.

          • Anonymous

So it comes down to Bionic or Thunderbolt…

I heard tiered pricing might be introduced… I kinda like my unlimited 29.99 plan

            Should I be scared?

          • Anonymous

DROID charge is a huge waste, no updates not really supported by the community. Bionic us gonna be the targa and that is gonna be like the atrix

        • http://profiles.google.com/matt2783 Matthew Seth

Could you really wait another year plus for a new phone? No matter when you buy something better will be on the horizon. You could wait until next summer, buy one of these phones (that were not even sure are real) and then immediately start hearing rumors about the next best thing.

          • Anonymous

Which is why I was thinking the Thunderbolt, Charge, or Bionic.

I have a cracked screen on my Droid 1 running Peter Alfonso’s stock rooted gingerbread.

I’m content with it but I itch for upgraded specs

          • http://www.facebook.com/chengguanhao Cheng Guan Hao 曾冠豪

By the time, when DROID BIONIC is out, Charge & Thunderbolt specs are old. :)

          • Pnicuh

get the Bionic dude, that’s what im waiting for. I waited 2 long years already, time to RIP my BlackBerry S2, yes I got a BB S2 i never again going to RIM=RIP.

        • Waknatious

I’m so worried about the current state of things, and that I’ll be disappointed. I’m due for my first “upgrade” from my November 09 OG Droid this June (it’s actually my wife’s – I let her have my upgrade to get out of her ghetto texting phone for a Dinc). I don’t think that by June this whole mess will have sorted itself out. It’s totally silly for me to wait for my “perfect phone” I know – there will always be something better – but I researched long and hard and waited very patiently for my early OG and was soooooooo happy I did. I just want this next upgrade to also be sooooooo worth it.
          C

          • Anonymous

            So what are you getting?

          • Waknatious

Probably BIONIC, depending on what’s going on by June/July. I really like the two Tbolts I’ve played with, and my wife’s OG Dinc is awesome… that and I’m one of the few people who actually like Sense 2.0 – but I’m really a Moto guy. It will depend on Blur probably. If I hate the “skin” of the BIONIC I’ll go Tbolt.
