DROID Charge Launching April 28, DROID Bionic Originally Scheduled for May 12?

First things first, let’s talk about the DROID Charge and the April 28 launch date you are seeing listed for it above.  We’re starting to hear from a variety of people that next Thursday should be massive with the launch of both the Incredible 2, Charge and then possibly even the Xperia PLAY, although there are rumors that the Japan earthquakes have delayed that phone.  We good there?

Bionic time.  Since our report that the DROID Bionic would be cancelled in favor of the Targa, there have been a lot of rumors floating around the interwebs, so I’d just like to add a little something to help ease your minds.  Like we had said in that cancellation post, the Targa would be moved into the Bionic’s place, but trust me when I say that you should be happy this is happening.  So that 5/12 date you are seeing above, is just an old one – we’ve still got at least 2 months to go kiddies.

While that isn’t nearly as poetic as our Panda friend can be on occasion and doesn’t include nearly as many details as I’d like to give you, I think you can dig enough into that to get a good feel for the situation.

Cheers ___!

I really like the Droid x look and feel. I hope the Targa becomes the bionic and it will be my new phone. Even if Motorola locks it down I believe they will keep it up to date. They have done that for all their high end handsets on Verizon. Even if they don’t. I plan to pick up the honeycomb so I will always have a stock device getting fast updates. I really do hope against all hope to see a Bionic in May.

  • tpipher

I was going crazy over the on again, off again rummor of the Bionic so I went to a corporate store and asked the store manager when the Bionic would be available and he told me with no hesitation that it had been cancelled! This sucks!

    • Ebiggz1984

Corporate store or not, they know about as much as a me and you which is squat. I was a a corporate store yesterday and asked the same question to about 3-4 employees and they all had the same response “I have no idea, all I know is that it’s supposed to be dual core.” So until VZW or MOTO comes out and directly says that it has been canceled then don’t believe anything you hear.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Angel-Luis-Gonzalez-III/591224353 Angel Luis Gonzalez III

I don’t believe the rumor of the Droid Bionic being canceled, i mean just the other day they stated that it is still being tested and tweaked for battery consumption and such. The motorola droid bionic page is still active on motorola’s website with no cancelation notification on it. It’s all just a bunch of dumb rumors, droid bionic will be released in may/june and will be a competitor of the iphone 5 that would be released anywhere between summer and fall.

According to the post, the original BIONIC that everyone is waiting for is cancelled. Instead, Moto is moving forward with the Targa to be released in at least 2 months, with the name BIONIC.

  • Jwildman73

WOW Verizon is really falling behind in the phone selection. Who cares about 4g if you can’t get it in your area or you can’t get a great phone with it. Not totally ripping on the Thunderbolt, Charge, or ???? (Bionic) but not one of these devices has a “wow” factor. Can we get a phone with the latest OS on it at launch and all the latest goodies with a battery that will power it for more than 2-3 hours??? Is that too much to ask for our $$$? you want me to pay even more money for device that I am now locked into for the full 2 years and this is the best you can give me… come on Big Red.. get me excited again like you did when I saw that first DROID commercial!!!

    • Warlike1919

i know, all the other carriers or getting way better phones than verzion,Even Fing T-mobile as a better line up of phones coming out

  • Anonymous

Either way it goes I’m getting the next Moto 4G phone!

  • Nkmett15

Ok, answer this question then… Why does Motorola’s website still have the Droid BIONIC listed??? It’s the same phone they announced with the same coming soon icon in the bottom right hand corner. NO TARGA picture in its place! I don’t know how you can come up with a rumor saying the Targa is going in the Bionic’s place when you can’t even type the word “Targa” in on Motorola’s website and get anything on it???!!!!

  • Dieselxbeta

Maybe the tegra was never a tegra at all. It;s just these nerd f*ckers were ahole to write dumb crap. Bionic was always the tegra, tegra was just a bull shit to f*ck with everyone online ok!!

This headline should say “Losers are still photoshopping fake release dates until one is finally right”.

We have yet another “rumor” which includes a picture with no valid URL… every week there has been a new “leaked date” supposedly from a retailer’s site or internal communication. The same happened with the Thunderbolt. The only substantial news for the Charge was the walmart.com screenshot which you can actually go to the site and find, but of course it does not include a date or price.

Just throwing this out there, but it’s possible that what Kellex is trying to insinuate is that Bionic has major hardware/software issues, the Targa was in development anyway and that Motorola really liked the Bionic naming so…the Targa was bumped up to fill in for the previously announced Droid Bionic’s shoes, the og Bionic has gone by the wayside and the upcoming VZW Nexus phone will be the Nexus Bionic by Motorola…
    yes? maybe? I wish…

If the Bionic droid was scrapped it would be removed from the Motorola website, but it is not. Bionic Droid is there. As for rooting, someone is always going to find a way around any locks in order for the phone to be rooted.

    • Anonymous

“If the Bionic droid was scrapped it would be removed from the Motorola website, but it is not.”

      Sometimes that’s not the case.

“As for rooting, someone is always going to find a way around any locks in order for the phone to be rooted.”

Maybe and maybe not. Moto has become efficiently good at keeping the boot loaders locked down. They have effectively shutdown custom roms. Based on that can we be sure that they won’t work on finding a way to shut down the root process as well? I wouldn’t bet against them. Yet I hope not.

From what I can tell, the “targa” is the Droid x2, and what this means it that the x2 is coming 5/12. And the bionic sometime in june or july.

    • Anonymous

That’s is completely not true. The Droid X2 is a refresher of the same phone and is not the Tagra. The Tagra has always been linked to 4G LTE while the Droid X2 has not. The Droid X2 comes with boosted specs in the same build as the original device.

So let me get this straight: the Bionic is cancelled, the Targa is moved into its place and is taking the name Bionic, and we’re looking at a late summer release. So, instead of getting a super sexy phone with a flat back in June, I’m going to have to wait til July or August to get the Droid Hunchback. And I should be “happy this is happening”? There’s a reason I never got a Droid X: It looks like it has scoliosis.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6GIPJHGPLNF543AY3QLWRV7DRQ crzytwnman

Agreed. Sexy in a phone has to do with the exterior look and feel of it as much as what goes inside. Targa is a glorified Droid X with a hunchback and ridiculous corners. I am not happy this is happening (if it really is).

The bigger question is: which phone doesn’t have a locked bootloader? I still can’t decide if that’s more important than a dual-core phone. Coming off an og droid, which became obsolete after 2 months (no joke, N1 came out in Jan), I want a phone with a chip that’s a bit more future-proof. But I don’t wanna give up custom roms…..

    • Killershade

      Just stick with Samsung.

    • Anonymous

Then don’t get a Motorola if you want real roms like you are used to. Cyanogenmod is about to be released for the Thunderbolt. And if you even think about Samsung don’t ever expect an ota update. At least HTC updates their phones sometimes.

      • http://twitter.com/zaiger zaiger

Obviously if he is concerned about ROMs he does not care about OTA updates.

    • Anonymous

Wait for the Galaxy S II.

  • Jshgranville

So the Bionic is still coming out..?????

    • Anonymous

Not exactly. The Bionic that was a huge hit at CES is supposedly dead. So now Motorola is focusing on the Targa (which has all along been a much better phone). But instead of release the phone as the “Motorola Targa” or “Droid Targa” it will now supposedly be called the “Motorola Bionic” or “Droid Bionic.” So it’s not the Bionic many of us had been waiting for. Instead we’ll wait a little longer but get a much better phone.

(Of course, this is all assuming these rumors are true.)

Summary: Targa is the (new) Droid Bionic.

Think of it like Samsung quickly updating the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to the new thinner one.

  • woo

HUH?! So… no bionic, Targa instead… and now shooting for June? Sheesh. I need a dual core 4g phone stat. If VZW and Moto keep this up I’m just going to hop onto the HTC sensation or something :( -sad face because of TMO getting consumed by ATT

  • Anonymous

“you should be happy this is happening.”

Why should I be happy that the only decent phone in Verizon’s upcoming lineup was cancelled? Tell me they’re getting the Sensation instead and then I’ll be happy.

    • Anonymous

As a person who has operated the Original Droid, Droid X and now the HTC Thunderbolt. Calling anything with Blur on it as the “only decent phone in Verizon’s upcoming lineup” is quite a stretch. Mind you this is just my opinion. The only decent phone Moto ever made for Verizon was the Original Droid and calling it decent is the biggest understatement of all time.

The Droid X developed what I would like to call “blur issues” and the HTC TBolt is a work of art. HTC Sense makes so much more sense than Blur. I’m not a fan of skins, but if you’re going to do a skin, do it right and don’t make it overly intrusive.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Like you said in your statement its your opinion sense isnt for everybody

        • Anonymous

I completely understand that, which is why I included the words “Mind you this is just my opinion.”

The point of me saying anything at all is because I for the first time can look at both sides of the argument.

I’ve operated the TBolt for 10 days and I have yet to experience any of the issues I experienced with the Droid X after 10 days of use.

      • Anonymous

I’m talking hardware specs. I root so the skin is irrelevant.

        • Anonymous

In that regard you are absolutely right. Moto might always have the best hardware in terms of phones on Verizon unless the HTC Sensation were to make it’s way to Verizon in some version, but for some reason I’m doubting that.

        • Anonymous

      • Anonymous

“and the HTC TBolt is a work of art.”

ha, right, along with the worst battery life in the history of phones makes it the shortest enjoyment of that work of art. At the end of the 14 days I couldn’t wait to give it back. And yes, I do know what I’m doing. My X happily gets twice the life that phone does. Tbolt was the first phone I could plug in to my computer and see it drain while charging. Then when I was recommended to ‘bump’ charge it, it was clear the only thing getting bumped was the phone from my portfolio. HTC failed big time there. At least Motorola gets the basics right.

        • Anonymous

You won’t find me disagreeing with you on that at all. The battery life on the TBolt is HORRIBLE.

Having said that. I will say this. The X is a good phone. The TBolt is a better phone. And my reasoning is this.

The way a phone is looked at or valued is based on each individual’s personal preference. The thing I hate the most on any phone is degrading software. There’s not much you can do for that if it’s a permanent issue, I even find having to do a factory restore to be quite annoying.

Now battery issues rank low on my scale because it’s hardware. Some hardware issues you can fix yourself like bad battery life. Altering some of the settings on the phone and/or buying an larger battery can make the problem all but disappear. Now Moto is terrific in that department, but when it comes to lag, pauses and random reboots Moto is in no position to brag. They have great hardware but how that hardware interacts with the Software is what’s most important. Blur not only does not look good it doesn’t fit on Moto’s own phones. The Atrix is a prime example of why Moto should not be in the skin or software market. Webtop is failing because of it.

          • Anonymous

That’s what rooting, custom launchers and roms are for.

  • Jeyrivera89

I dont know if it means much. But I was told 2 days ago by a 2nd level Vzw Tech that the bionic 4g had an eta of july/august..

    • Anonymous

This actually goes along with the rumor. I’ve read in a few different places that Motorola is scrapping the Bionic – at least the version we know of now (the one that was previewed at CES). Motorola has also been working on another phone called, up until this time, the Targa. The Bionic was originally supposed to be released in the April-June window, while the Targa was probably a late summer or even holiday release. So Motorola gets rid of the Bionic and focuses on releasing the Targa in late summer. And they like the name so much they decided to keep the Bionic name and put it on the Targa.

      • Jeyrivera89

Could be true… I just talked to another vz tech and they’re saying that the ‘bionic’ has been axed….

who knows.. I have my annual upgrade coming up and want to get something good.

Kellex, love the site, but these “rumored release date” posts are getting super tired. Can we have a weekly rumor roundup instead of a daily barage? I’m not saying your sources aren’t great, but just throwing up every Thursday’s date in a two-month span, followed by a question mark does not qualify as good journalism or blogging.

That statement right there is subject to opinion and does not qualify as the rule of thumb. If Kellex doesn’t bring the latest information available when it’s available someone else will and everyone here will go there to find out what’s going on the moment it happens.

There’s a thin line between loyal readers and readers thirsty for information.

      • Jawshua

No not true, this site was existed and was awesome long before this hype crap rolled out to meet a paycheck quota, and wasn’t an advertising extension for Verizon, and daily included great things to download and check out, and the intelligent users here were very content with that. You ever look to see at the “via” of almost every post, it’s just re-worded advertising from some other damn site.

So yeah, what he said, is in fact… FACT!

I seriously don’t understand all the talk about the battery on the Thunderbolt. I went from an OG Droid to the Thunderbolt, and the battery is lasting twice as long as my old droid. I’ll believe it when I see it. Makes no sense to me that Moto would completely abandon the Bionic and move the Targa (a phone that was slated for the end of the year or beginning next year) up more than 6 months. From what I know, they were having issues with the Tegra 2 playing nice with Verizon’s LTE chipset so I would think they would just substitute the Tegra with the obvious choice, an OMAP4.

Sounds more to me like the Targa is what the Bionic was originally going to be, and now verizon decided to make something more awesome and took the Bionic tag to stick it on that phone.

If thats true then I’m excited about my new phone in August. It seemed (or seems) that we’ve been waiting for this Bionic that going to come out and not even be top of the line once it is released. I didn’t want to pick this up as my new phone for 2 years.
