New DROIDX Gingerbread 4.5.588 Rooted

That mysterious Gingerbread update that snuck out for the DROIDX earlier this week has been rooted.  The process isn’t all that difficult, but it’s also not the simplest you’ve seen in your rooting days.  There are two sets of instructions: 1 for those running the previous leak and 1 for those running official 2.3.340.  P3 and the boys have put together a complete step-by-step that you need to follow in order for this to work right, so to make sure you get there, I haven’t altered his instructions at all.  Please make sure you read every single step at least twice before proceeding. I’d also suggest that you head over to the MDW thread below to see what sorts of issues that users have run into.  And good luck.

You must follow the directions exactly to the letter, if you do not I can not guarantee the results. Please do not post questions here if you have not read the directions below. Before beginning ensure that you understand the directions that you have read.

Good now that you have read above the you are ready to proceed.

For those running rooted 2.3.340 official firmware:

1. Your phone must be in the following condition before you can use the patched updater.

  1. Your phone is running the 2.3.340 official Froyo Firmware
  2. Your phone has been rooted
  3. Your phone is using the Droid2 Bootstrap program (Do Not Use DroidX Bootstrap)

2. Have you gotten your phone in the proper state to upgrade to the newest leaked Gingerbread. Yes go ahead, if No go back to step 1.

  1. Download all 3 files and place on the root of your sdcard.

    Install File Part 1
    md5 = 55903982607d3b1b22b3b9f3af1ff807
    size = 99.1 MB (103875449 bytes)

    Download Part 1 – Mirror 1
    Download Part 1 – Mirror 2
    Download Part 1 – Mirror 3

    Install File Part 2
    md5 = a021e4e0dffb39018bdabf7e679f4d35
    size = 16.2 MB (17028214 bytes)

    Download Part 2 – Mirror 1
    Download Part 2 – Mirror 2
    Download Part 2 – Mirror 3

    Install File Part 3
    md5 = 7cb97560c1f757ad2b9ccd131200911b
    size = 220.7 KB (226025 bytes)

    Download Part 3 – Mirror 1
    Download Part 3 – Mirror 2
    Download Part 3 – Mirror 3

  2. Restart the Droid2 Bootstrap in recovery mode.
  3. Install all three zips files in order. DO NOT LEAVE RECOVERY UNTIL ALL 3 HAVE FINISHED BEING INSTALLED.

Most testers have installed this over the of 2.3.340 firmware without the need for a wipe, about 15% did wipe, the choice is yours.

For those running the 4.5.573 leak:

1. Perform a backup using clockwork recovery
2. Downgrade to the 2.3.340 firmware
3. Follow the above procedure to upgrade
4. After upgrading enter into Bootstrap recovery
5. Perform an Advanced Restore —-Select Data

Full support can be found at My Droid World.

Cheers B3t@ and blakjakdavy!

What about those of us running VISIONary..? How can we switch to bootstrap instead of VISIONary?

  • Jack42

WOW! Those Steps Are So Easy And IT WORKS!! Thanks So Much!!! :)

    • JTG in Rip City

      Download 1KDStaz.x.iso
Use disc utility (built in) to burn iso file to a cd/dvd
      shut computer down
start back up holding c button down
Hit enter at “boot baby… boot” screen
you will see yellow dots for 3- minutes
select display size(There may be a delay after selecting the display size)
you will now be in script and ready to flash.

it wil ask you if you are ready to sbf
      plug phone into usb
put phone in bootloader (power phone on while holding camera and volume up and down keys)
if you are connected by usb and in bootload mode hit 1 then “return”

wait for it… oh yes like brand new.

Sometimes it bootloops on initial start just pull batery and power on holding home button
when yellow exclamation with droid guy comes up hit bottom right search button (magnifying glass)
      wiped data, wipe cache reboot

Now like fresh out of the box and can wipe clean and restore fresh whenever you mess up

“Flashed my phone so many times I feel like I’m at Mardi Gras chasing beads”

Does the old CRT screen animation work on this build as well?

    • nicotinic

      Yes

    • nicotinic

      Yes

    • nicotinic

Yes. I installed the most recent leak update(DROIDX Gingerbread 4.5.588 Rooted) as instructed on this page^. I then installed CRT screen animation in ClockworkMod recovery and it works the same as before(previous on leaked/rooted GB version: 4.5.573).

  • Jalevy99

Where is the best place to get help – I did all the steps above on my rooted X and now I get the red “M” and it goes to a bootloader error screen and I think I am bricked… I get the following errors – A5, 69, 35, 00, and 27 and can’t get to anything. Tried using RSD and that failed as well. Any thoughts on how to proceed would be much appreciated as I am dead dead now… thanks in advance all.

Great build. Everything is working good. Better then last build it seems to me. And tethering is actually working without having to tweak it. Now just got to wait to get my th app back since not in market and dang backup cancelled without me resizing before flashing over.

  • garrett

anyone know of an sbf program for mac

  • Nofan

does this process mess up the free wi-fi tether ?

    • Anonymous

Shouldn’t be using tether unless you pay for it. P3 seems to think the black helicoptors are circling, looking for tether moochers. I personally don’t think its happening, but there was enough paranoia running amuck in his tweets a week or so to at least give it a second thought.

Can someone please post the BlurCamera.apk and BlurCamera.odex from the Froyo 2.3.340 update? They should have a December 10, 2010 file date. I modded mine to not have the camera beep and thought I backed it up but can’t for the life of me find it and it’s preventing me from installing the GB update. I’ve asked all over the place already to no responses. Completely stuck at this point so hoping someone here can help. I don’t want to use an SBF and start over because of 2 freaking files. Thanks!

    • Rishi

lonnie – when i had the older version of GB i thought one of the settings included a checkbox to shut the camera sounds off. double check, but i don’t know if the 340 version will work anyway.

  • Drew

step 2 says Restart the Droid2 Bootstrap in recovery mode..

So I enter the Droid2 Bootstrap program and then click both buttons?

    • Rishi

Yes, first bootstrap recovery, and then restart into recovery or whatever that button says.

  • Rishi

Again I say again, tethering is weird on it, so if you tether, i would stick to froyo/roms.

IMO (and sorry, i just watched that foghorn leghorn geico commercial.)

  • slipfilth

I get an error apply_patch_check —-and its pointing to the city is.apk which i removed….do I needed to restore this program?

    • http://davesdroid.blogspot.com NadTwist

Yes. You need to restore any system apps you removed. Or SBF back to OEM.

    • Anonymous

Yes, all of the bloatware that came with the 2.2 motorola update needs to be there for the upgrade to take place

  • http://davesdroid.blogspot.com NadTwist

** For anyone that cares: I’ve been working with the developer of “TapeMachine” since the last leaked Gingerbread started causing it to reboot the phone (similar to Vignette). Some sort of memory mapping issue.

Last night he (Olivier of TapeMachine) got me a test version that works on this new Gingerbread and this morning he updated the app in the Market. He also spoke with the dev of Vignette and they have fixed theirs as well.

    Happy Gingerbread Day. ;)

Just so I am clear– Official Froyo Firmware is stock ROM correct. I must go from Liberty back to stock then perform the instructions listed?

    • http://davesdroid.blogspot.com NadTwist

      Yes. That is correct.

    • YourMomsTwaht

No, it’s not called a ROM.

  • 2012endofdays

just 1 Question, this gingerbread is like the other gingerbread rooted posted few weeks ago?

    • YourMomsTwaht

Yes, not worth the time for this one.

      • bladebarrier

Why do you post here at all? Are you really so bored that you spend your day trolling and derping?

        • YourMomsTwaht

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NEOS2HO2ITOC6GKUN2Q4DZHZCA Daniel

it is basically the same with what seems to be all the bugs taken out…much more stable and snappy (fast) than froyo or the previous version of GB

  • Ddog

Dumb question im new at this do I download all 3 files for the the three parts?

    • http://www.facebook.com/japultra Jason Nguyen

No, those are just mirrors in case one or more of the links don’t work.

    • http://www.facebook.com/japultra Jason Nguyen

  • jimmy47

I had my phone rooted 2.3.340 now in order for this to work I have to unroot my phone….does that also mean that I have to unfreeze all the bloatware to in order for this to work as well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Aran-Deibel/597564550 Aran Deibel

Before I upgrade to this, has anyone noticed any significant performance/bug fixes over the last leak?

    • tiberiumdj

performance is great so far, only bug I have really noticed is the LED bug, the same bug was in the last build.

      • YourMomsTwaht

The screen brightness bug too. The keyboard still lags. Not worth it at all.

  • http://profiles.google.com/vinnieallard Vincent Allard

I’m on the leak and can’t get into recovery to backup. I’m using the droidx bootstrapper… Do I have to use the Droid2 bootstrapper? for some reason i think I might rememebr reading that somewhere. Wanted to ask before I just tried it. Anyone? Thanks in advance

    • Boblank84

read the instructions….it states that very clearly.

I am running the leaked gingerbread rooted version from last week if this is not the OTA then why am I even bothering. Whose to say this won’t happen 3 or 4 more times before the actual ota even comes out. I’m fine with the version I have for now except for that damn sync icon in the notification bar. : )

    • Rain_king46

Has anybody figured out how to git rid of that sync icon yet??

      • tiberiumdj

reboot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset

        • Anonymous

Actually, I’ve done just that and it doesn’t work. Sure the syncing symbol isn’t there all the time, but it is there more often than not. End result for me was factory reset was a huge waste of time.

          • tiberiumdj

have you let it sync for a little while sometimes it had a decent amount to sync

      • Anonymous

When I “sync issue” with the leaked version I bootstrapped clockwork and did a wipe. It worked.

    • Tim242

That sync icon means your phone is constantly syncing, and will run your battery down quick. You MUST factory reset to fix it.

Waiting for a simpler method as i”ve already gone to the 2.4.588 and don’t want to deal with going back to froyo just to get root. Thats a huge PITA.

    • Anonymous

It would be easier to do it now. There might not be a simpler way in the future. They are making it harder and harder to root.

only thing i really don’t like about GB is you are now unable to link fbook and regular contacts. if they weren’t “linked” previously you’re SOL. Unless someone knows something I don’t?

          • http://www.facebook.com/element.eight Eric Cloutier

no, i mean verizon. they hold full control of the update.

they seem to be the ones putting the stop to the updates. remember just a few weeks ago they didn’t allow a supposed update to come out, theorized to be because one of the screens mentioned at&t accidentally?

You know, I have confidence in DX world that soon it will become easier to root. Beside I don’t know if this build is the final version. I’ll just hang with leaked version little longer.

If true, then perhaps announcements of rooting should be held until after release to prevent them from breaking it b4 they let it out.

        • Anonymous

Rooting doesn’t break anything. It simply gives administrator access to you, the owner of the device.

          • Anonymous

No, i mean Motorola trying ro break the root access. If they see it rooted, they try to break root access before they finally release the update. So gain root, don’t advertise it until the update is actually released to the public. Know what i mean?

        • Anonymous

      • YourMomsTwaht

Of course they do. It’s much easier to have thousands of people test them out and report the bugs then pay Moto employees to do the same.

  • Amcmearty

ok so by downgrade to 2.3.340 means an sbf right? and is it really in good intention to upgrade from the previous leak because i like it how it is and im hearing that people have trouble tethering

Previous leak is real solid. If this process looks scary, you are probably good just hanging out on it.

I followed the instructions exactly as P3DROID told us to and have had no problems at all and I didnt have to do a data wipe. Run a quadrant test right after completing the process and got a 1577 with no overclock. GB is zippy and stable on my DX so far.

    • Hoe

I was getting scores of 1800-1900 on the GB leak with no overclock. Hope it didn’t drop with this version!

    • droidinmind

  • tbaybe

so if u do this leak… does your tethering stop? on the previous link i was not able to tether, it would lock up my phone, and take me to VZW site…

    • DroidzFX

I have been using the 3g hostpot app and it seems to work fine with the nvram patch installed

    • Rain_king46

I have not personally tried it. But I believe that this is the same as the last leak just rooted. So unless they can bypass the tethering problem with root I suspect you will have the same issues.

It’s illegal to tether unpaid. Don’t do it. Your the reason we are in this mess in the first place.

      • DroidzFX

What mess? OH the one where Verizon wants to charge you money to access the data you get on your phone?

Just dont go crazy with it and there wont be a problem.

        • http://twitter.com/thomasthemiller thomasthemiller

no, the reason we have to flash 3 separate files in order to get rooted gingerbread, and the reason we have to deal with locked bootloaders.

          • DroidzFX

Go ahead and keep believing the non sense they feed you. This would happen no matter what. Even if everyone followed every single rule in the book. Its all about control buddy.

          • DBK

Not necessarily. If the system wasn’t getting abused, or abused as much, then some of the policy changes wouldn’t have happened. And if there weren’t as many dickweeds committing warranty fraud as there are, then the phones would be locked down so tightly. It would be like the Tbolt, tight enough to deter amateurs, but loose enough to allow devs access.

Yes it is about control, but it wouldn’t be as bad as it is now.

          • DBK

            *wouldn’t

          • Tesseract 3

You don’t get it, at all. Control has a motive behind it, its not about control for the sake of control, that makes no sense. Its about the bottom line, profit. People who can’t abide by their contract and steal data, or who return phones they bricked and commit warranty fraud, cost the carriers mounds of money. So the carriers lock everything down. Why would a for profit company waste thmany thousands of man hours to control everything “just because”, when there isn’t any monetary reason for it? Knock of the ridiculous orwellian conspiracy theory nonsense, its embarassing, seriously.

          • DroidzFX

Your naive beliefs are embarrassing. You ever heard of a dictatorship? Control for the sake of control thats what its about. And you with all your buddies bending over a taking without questions is what is wrong with society.

            December 16, 1773

“hey lets throw this Tea in the water and say screw taxes”

YOU ” Naw man lets just pay it”

          • DBK

That metaphor shows just how ignorant you are. This is a corporation that only cares about money. More money can be made by limiting the plan options, charging for tethering, and locking down phones than by letting people commit warranty fraud and stealing data. We wouldn’t have to “bend over and take it” as you put it if twits like you weren’t trying to screw the system every chance they got.

The more accurate metaphor would be:

            December 16, 1773

“hey lets throw this Tea in the water and say screw taxes”

YOU ” Naw man, let’s blow up their ships, rape their women, and kill their first born and say screw everyone”

          • DroidzFX

DBK I dont really care.Your going to have your opinion and all will have mine.

            Thanks for playing

          • Tesseract 3

Being ignorant isn’t having an opinion, it’s being ignorant.

          • DroidzFX

            Thanks for proving the point

          • Tesseract 3

Oh very clever, I’m sure you’re the smartest kid in your class.

          • Tesseract 3

Oh very clever, I’m sure you’re the smartest kid in your class.

          • DBK

And it’s people with “opinions” (read: thieving douchebags) like yours, who feel entitled, that are making it worse for the rest of us. Here’s hoping you get caught and lose your service. One less dickweed to worry about.

          • DroidzFX

Im sorry everyone doesnt agree with you DBK. Life must be hard.

          • Tesseract 3

Actually you seem to be in the minority here. :)

          • Tesseract 3

Seriously in your own quoted example, its about money. Your argument is they would waste thousands locking things down even if it didn’t cost them money, which from a basic business perspective is nonsensical and bloody stupid. Its orwellian jackassery at its finest, getting worked up thinking people are out to control you just to get their rocks off.

          • DroidzFX

I never said anything about wasting money locking things down. YOU DID.

Im saying tethering should be free and that devices over time would get locked down no matter what was done. They already have developers so the the cost is not really a factor. Adding an encrypted digital signature is not that complicated but breaking it is. Your not going to change my mind on the subject and insulting people will never prove your argument is any more valid. MOVE ON

          • Tesseract 3

No but what you did say was that “devices over time would get locked down no matter what was done”. Which makes no sense. Why would a company waste time locking down devices for no reason? Cost is a factor, just because they have developers doesn’t mean it is free to lock down the devices. The developers who lock down the phones for them are paid for their time, time they could be spending developing. It’s man hours and yes, it does cost companies money. It isn’t reasonable. You are dodging your own point, that they will get locked down no matter what, which I still haven’t heard a plausible explanation for.

Simple question: Why would they pay people to lock down the phones, when it isn’t costing them any money to leave them unlocked?

          • Tesseract 3

Or to put it more simply, if no one was abusing the system, what would be the point of locking them down? To control people just because it makes them feel cool?

          • DroidzFX

I will keep it simple. GO do some research on encryption. It doesnt take a whole staff to encrypt a signature. The bootloader signed by the manufacturers is encrypted and cant be replicated.

After you caught up on your reading come talk to me.

          • Tesseract 3

It takes time to create a good encryption. You realize encrypted code can be decrypted right? Or do you think that once a simple encrypt is put in place it’s magically unbreakable? I hope you can’t really believe it’s that simple. And even if it was easy why lock down a phone for no reason at all? Just to get their rocks off? For no monetary gain? Just because? It would still make no sense. You keep dodging that question, if people were not abusing the system and costing the company money, why would they bother to lock their phones? It.Would.Be.Pointless.

          • DroidzFX

You obviously didnt read anything. Encryption methods already exists. You dont have to create a new one every time you come out with a new device. Encryption algorithms exists now that would take a thousand computers thousands of years to crack. GO read and Learn something. I am not going to give you a class on encryption. I already have my certification go get yours.

          • Tesseract 3

Wow you really are a dumbass, I have no more to say to you, if you really think that manufacturers don’t have an entire department for security and encryption that cost them many man hours, you are hopelessly stupid and naive.

          • Tesseract 3

Also if you seriously believe that the manufacturers don’t have a security department that they pay just to make phones locked down, you are really naive.

        • YourMomsTwaht

Hey Droidz, if you don’t agree with the contract YOU signed, or your mom signed, break the contract and go to another carrier. Take some responsibility for your actions and quit expecting the world to owe you.

          • DroidzFX

You should move to China I think you would like it there. Then would have alot less to worry about. Let them decide what you can watch and what websites you allowed to access.

          • YourMomsTwaht

Again, you are a little kid that can’t comprehend taking responsibility for yourself.

      • Anonymous

You are an idiot if you think you should have to pay an extra $30 per month to use the same exact internet connection you’re using on your phone, on your laptop. No increase in bandwidth, no additional data cap, just the same exact connection but through a laptop. Verizon and other carriers “tethering fee” is one of the most stupid and exorbitant fees in carrier history, and that’s saying something.

        • DBK

This is one of the few times I sort of tend to agree with YMT.

The unlimited data you pay for is for your phone’s use only. Other devices will use more and eat it up a lot faster. That’s why most smartphones have a mobile hotspot feature (for a fee of course), so the data going to and coming from bigger devices can be regulated so as to not bog down the network. Most people who tether simply do so to use that feature for free (and then tend to abuse it quite profusely) and that’s stealing. I don’t want to start another “unlimited data” argument, so I am going to end this by simply saying your wrong. Good day sir/ma’am/it.

          • Anonymous

The point is that Verizon should look into other alternatives besides locking down devices because people abuse the tethering. Locking a device leaves the control to the end user because they will eventually find a way through it. But if Verizon were to monitor bandwidth on users who seem to be “bogging” down the network and throttle them back.

          • DBK

They are locking the devices because of the warranty frauds, not the tethering. The questionable policy changes and the tracking is because of tethering.

          • Anonymous

Regardless locking the device because of warranty fraud can’t possibly be the only way. I’m not disagreeing with you just trying to lay out the options. For example the Xoom has a oem unlock on the bootloader for devs, but voids the warranty. Why not do that on all devices but make it impossible to reset the bootloader to factory once it’s unlocked. I for one unlocked my Xoom and never looked back and I new full well that my warranty would be voided.

          • DBK

That I agree with. But for now it is the only way to stop the amateurs from bricking their devices and trying to return them under warranty, which would be warranty fraud. If only they (the company) would be more thorough with the warranty claims, then they wouldn’t even need to be locked. But, alas, they want to make money, so that will probably never happen.

        • YourMomsTwaht

You are a moron for two reasons. 1) It’s $20 a month. 2) You pay $29.99 a month for data to your phone period. Not any device you see fit. Read your contract moron.

          • Anonymous

It used to be $30 a month, I know because I paid it for a month. Second, you’re using the phone’s data to tether, it is the EXACT.SAME.CONNECTION. I don’t think I can make that any clearer. I don’t give a damn about the contract, just because it’s in there doesn’t mean that’s how it should be or that it’s right. Obviously you can go over on data just like you can with your phone, that’s why Verizon has policies in place to charge you extra or throttle your connection, it’s not like you’re getting a higher cap with tethering, to my knowledge it’s the same 5GB. Anyway I couldn’t care less, continue paying that fee I’m sure Verizon is laughing all the way to the bank.

          • DBK

YMT may be acting like a dick, but he is right in that you are incredibly dense. It is not, and I repeat NOT, the same as using the data on the phone. The plan you pay for, and are under contract for, is for the phone, period. The phone uses the data differently (read: more compressed and and at a slower rate) than other devices. The network is not designed to handle other devices without some sort of mechanism converting the data back to phone data quality. That’s what the hotspots are for. You tether, you steal. Period.

To answer your question, download this patch file and install zip from sd card using clock work:

      http://www.multiupload.com/DEC7G7IB6R

This stops verizon’s 3G hotspot service from taking over when you try to use the tethering app for rooted users.

If you would like to unpatch use the same process but with this downloaded file:

      http://www.multiupload.com/2OV4J6PWVL

      • Iammebane

this is probably a stupid question, but do you have to unpatch as well for this to enable tethering to work… i have patched it but it still does not work…
