New Motorola XOOM Kernel Adds SD Card Support for Rooted Users

The Motorola XOOM shipped with an inactive SD card slot that was extremely annoying to everyone looking to purchase one, especially when we weren’t really given a time table as to when we could expect an update to fix it.  Well, thanks tot he folks at XDA, the wait is over.  A new kernel has been released for rooted users that will enable the SD card…and I’m speechless.

*Note – Haven’t had a chance to test this myself yet, but will be doing so momentarily.

Full set of instructions can be found at this XDA thread.

Cheers Will and Luis!

Head over to XDA and use the new improved one click root method and it has the new kernal installed in the program so all you have to do is run it and when you get to the accept or decline screen after it reboots just decline it then restart manually (power/volume+) it will continue on for those who do not like to use ADB

    • Blackdaug1rob

I rooted using the one click method yesterday. Are you saying that kernal enables the SD card recognition?
I have the wifi version and that a DB template is greek to me…

      • Sesawyer3127

There should be an update for the wifi too and part of that process to root has the new kernal in it. Once you are done with the one click go to your tablet specs and you should see the tiamit kernel 1.3.0 there.

        • rob

Actually it says…2.6.36.3 tiamat. It rooted easy with the one click..but not seeing SD card 2 in root explorer. Maybe I missed a step–

          • Blackdaug1rob

            Sorry. It says version 1.1.6

          • rob

I went back and re-ran the one click root since they updated on the xda thread yesterday. Worked great and I now have sdcard2!! I rooted my og droid a long time ago, but the adb stuff is still beyond me….but this one click root ap for the xoom went smoth as silk. Going out to get my 32 g sd card today!! Would have posted thanks on the xda thread but the registration wouldnt let me….so……thanks!

I had no idea the SD card was not enabled on this device. That makes no sense at all considering every android phone already has a SD slot and its not new technology. I am sick of all these overpriced devices that are behind the competitors. The ASUS Transformer is cheaper than the XOOM and is better in specs. Greedy corporations are the only explanation. First the insanely overpriced Atrix and now the XOOM. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bionic is $400 on contract at launch. I will not be an early adopter and pay the premium for an inferior device. More power to the people that got one-Im sure you love it–just not for me. I dont want to have to root to enable a simple feature that has been around for years already. Crazy!

Read a little bud as the sdcard wasn’t enabled because at the moment honeycomb can’t use it its more googles fault then moto’s but hey blame whoever. And comparing the transformer to the xoom and saying the transformer is better in specs is totally dumb there the same. Same tegra 2. Same memory. Same internal storage unless you get the cheap 400 16gb version. The one difference for those of us that paid the overpriced xoom price we will have 4g lte when its upgraded. Does that justify the over 300 more then the other ones no probably not.

I never noticed the fake Micro SD said on it “Replace with MicroSD only after Android system update”. The community sure showed this card now didn’t they HAHA

  • http://www.facebook.com/killswitch23456 Eric Markson

I can verify personally that it works.

For the SD Card to show up, you need to restart the device.

Then go into system and you’ll see a folder called sdcard2.

    Its super ballin!

    great news for Xoom users….

But I will just wait for the new Toshiba tablet that has this already AND an SD card reader AND a removable battery AND….

    • DroidzFX

AND……probably be buying another after a year

Sorry I think Toshiba is garbage

    • Anonymous

….your still waiting for your tablet and yet i already have mine….AND now it has a working SD card reader… AND just wait mine will be 4G for free….

  • Anonymous

great news…i want to jump in..heck my OG droid is rooted…i rooted my brothers phone…but as for my xoom….i for some reason I think i’ll just stay unrooted until after i get the 4g upgrade…anyone else thinking the same way? am i alone? :)

    • Anonymous

No you’re not alone. I’ll wait as well.

    • http://xeonblue.pip.verisignlabs.com/ David Thoren

Except that now you can root your XOOM, and then when the 4G upgrade comes up you can just do a nandroid backup, save everything to the SD card, do a reset on the device and send it in to them clean. Why wait to enjoy the fruits of rooting?

    • angermeans

I’m also going to wait I just don’t trust the whole we will update even if you root promise. I bought this tablet because it will get 4G and dammit I’m going to get it.

  • Anonymous

Well clearly this is just another example why nobody really needs root access. Device manufacturers will spoon feed you updates in a timely manner, when they feel you deserve them.

    /sarcasm.

Another awesome job by the developer community that does this work in their SPARE time.

With the community unlocking the SD card I dont see why Motorola has not released an update that would enable it. Unless they wanted to tempt people to go 4G and give them SD card support with a 4G upgrade.

    • Anonymous

Probably because Motorola has little or nothing to do with the SD card capability. I’m not sure what people fail to understand about this being a Google Experience Device? If the SD card slot had anything to do with Moto wanting people to do the 4G upgrade, then why exactly doesn’t the card slot work in the Wi-Fi only version?

Personally, I think Google’s at fault, but don’t forget that several tablets are launching without a slot to begin with.

      • Finire

They may be launching with it ready to go, but the key here is that they are not launched. The xoom not having SD card capabilities isn’t moto’s fault, Google wanted to get it out of the door so they pushed it with what they had at the moment. By the time these other tablets are launched with full SD support, I’d be willing to bet the xoom has already seen its update giving it full functionality.

Because you’ve never experienced the business pressure of trying to get a new device with a new OS to market ahead of your competitor’s second release of their Juggernaut product?

Honestly, some of the comments in forums astound me. So you think that there was some willfully decision making inside of Motorola that went along the lines of “hey, lets put an SD card slot in these bad boys but ship with them deactivated so we can piss off the customers that we dont have yet!” Really? You really think that’s how it all went down?

      • http://profiles.google.com/bill.hetherington Bill Hetherington

no, nobody thinks that’s how it went down; but the point is that since this can already be done, ahead of Google’s update, Motorola would have been smart to have their programmers incorporate a similar fix before releasing it. a slight delay for a product with a huge advantage over the competitor’s offering (many people don’t get an ipad purely due to lack of expandability), would be better than sending out a product that’s crippled
