Is Official Gingerbread for the DROIDX Starting to Roll Out? (Updated)

A new version of Gingerbread (Android 2.3) for the DROIDX has popped up as an OTA update to one lucky user’s phone and appears to be newer than the leaked version we had a few weeks back.  As you can see in my screenshot above, the leak was system 4.5.573 and the new one that popped up today is 4.5.588. It’s definitely newer, and according to community Motorola guru P3Droid who has the file now, this also includes a new bootloader.  What does that mean exactly?  Well, he’s suggesting that if your phone prompts you with the update, that you might want to hold off for now if having root access in the future is important to you.

Right now there isn’t an SBF to get you back to an older build from this new version.  No new root exploit has been found either.

And I should point out that we’ve checked in all the usual Verizon places for notes on an update and have come up empty.  This update is a complete surprise.

For those of you that are non-rooted and running Blur 2.3.340, you might want to start checking your phones.

Update 12:18PM:  According to P3, you can accept the update and still flash back to 2.3.340 using the SBF that’s available.

Update 2:22PM:  Loading up now for a quick look…

Update:  Here are the instructions for installing it.

This is definitely developing…

Until it’s rooted and I can upgrade without flashing to stock I’n staying on Froyo.

  • Suga Shane

Sounds like a hectic day for rooted users, which is basically everyone who frequents this blog.

    nothing here is Sunny NH

  • finsandpirates26

Nothing yet, are they rolling this out in a few areas first?

  • Jo

i think you may need the madden bloat. Removing NFS shift is fine since you didn’t need root to do that

  • Clar253

I deleted the Madden bloatware and that’s it. Can I still install??

    • Lostnbroken489

I Think You Can As Long As You Haven’t Rooted & Added Any Roms… I Don’t Think VZ Would Let You Uninstall If It Would Prevent Updates (Ex: Blockbuster Doesn’t Give You The Option To Uninstall)

      • Clar253

        I’m rooted lol
Is there any way to get the app download? :/

  • Arthur

I just noticed NFS shift in my downloaded applications in the manage applications menu. I pressed uninstall and it did. I’m not rooted also madden is gone and I never touched it. No sign of an update though whats going on?

    • Arthur

False alarm, NFS was always removable and I forgot I had Madden hidden in my launchers app drawer.

  • Yo momma like it

well i think until root access is done for the OTA ill stick with the deodexed GB…. no reason for me to SBF just to OTA an unrooted GB to SBF again to .340 when Apex 2.0 is about to drop.

  • Dragonljp

I’ll believe it when I see it. At least one person in this comment section said they got the update. Please post a picture or two so we all will believe that this “rumor” is true.

      Um, P3Droid HAS the update.

    Downloading update now….

    • Jo

from the links posted or on your dx?

    • Jo

on your dx or from the links to the file?

    • gingerkid

      how?

  • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

I think to just be on the safeside, im gonna unroot with Z4root and use then do a system restore so I know I’ll get gingerbread in the future

  • Bunie

Is this going to improve performance from stock 2.2?

    • mmmmmhead

      yes

  • gbread

If I stay rooted on stock 2.2.340, will the silent update not work? This is what I am hoping.

    • Skeetch79

a rooted stock 2.3.340 phone will still download the update – you have to manually choose to install it from the pop-up menu after the download completes.

the silent part is the downloading to your phone. the update will not automatically install itself in the background. you have to opt-in or opt-out

this mention of the “silent” update has been misinterpreted – technically froyo and any update able to be pushed were silent – the actual install was user initiated.

the update will succeed as long all files are present (system, apps, etc). freezing the apps won’t affect the update, but if you manually deleted the apps (i.e. bloatware) your update will fail.

      • Guest

Ok cool. There is no way I’m gonna let this thing fly on my phone til it’s rooted. If not at least I still have the rooted leak from a few weeks back.

  • Jo

i’m not finding any updates on about phone

  • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

I don’t know if this has been asked yet or not but I’m running rooted stock froyo 2.2.1….will I still get the OTA or do I have to unroot with Z4 and do a factory reset to get everything back to original stock slowness haha.

  • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

    • Skeetch79

you can stay rooted, but if you have deleted any of the bloatware it has to be present to apply the update. titanium backup freezing is ok – you will still be able to accept the update

      • http://twitter.com/metalhead520 Nick

Blockbuster app somehow disappeared or was that intentional with the last update 2.2.1….the navigator is still on it too….the only thing I rooted for was to use cache cleaners. I don’t do roms anymore since I ruined my Droid by flashing so many roms haha.

        • Skeetch79

strange with the blockbuster app….have it on my rooted stock 2.2.1 (2.3.340). if you have root explorer or any other file manager/explorer program for rooted users, the APK should be under /system/app/ as blockbuster.apk. do you use titanium backup – maybe you froze it?

        • Anonymous

did you maybe hide it with LP? I know I hid a few things and ended up forgetting they were even installed on my phone.

      • thebandito

I didn’t root, but I deleted the racing app that came on the Droid X when I got it. I just went into the manage apps settings menu and deleted the game. Will I still get the update?

    • Skeetch79

you can stay rooted. if you have removed any of the bloatware you will need to find a way to get it back – deleted/removed bloatware will prevent the update from succeeding. if you have frozen them with titanium backup, however, you will still be able to accept the update since the files technically have not been removed – just “hidden” from your phone’s system

MY NEXT PHONE WILL BE A HTC

    • Mr.Joe

Yeah… Cause they’re phone aren’t full of bloat and lockdowness.

      • Mr.Joe

        Their OPS

  • Anonymous

Very sneaky of them to push this out without letting people know. Must be backlash for all of those people tethering without a data plan.

    • Tim242

OTA’s are always silent. They download, then you still have the option to decline installation. FYI, 99% of unauthorized tetherers are non-rooted.

  • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

question of the day. im running stock 2.2.1 rooted. will i receive this update? if not how do i unroot?

    • http://profiles.google.com/bhinson15 Brandon Hinson

      Z4root will unroot you

      • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

i only have the options for temp root or permanent root. how would i unroot?

        • Skeetch79

if you have the option for temp root or permanent root then you are not rooted (a.k.a. unrooted) – at least Z4Root is not seeing you as rooted

          • http://twitter.com/STEV3TS Steven D

            weird cuz i have superuser

          • Tim242

Did you use Z4 to root?

  • Anonymous

I checked the Motorola Forums thread. There’s a lot of discussion regarding the leaked update, but nothing about anyone actually receiving it. Some people who were in the control group for Froyo say they have not seen any sign of Gingerbread yet.

  • Nemesis099

I think I’ll wait for them to be able to root as I like being able to backup all my apps with Titanium backup.

  • david

will 2.2.1 get the gingerbread update?

    • Dbzfan912

      Seriously, dude. don’t spam

      • david

Sorry. I am new to this. just trying to get info.

        • http://twitter.com/ant_fallin Anthony Fallin

Sometimes searching the Forums are the best places for this type of info…just a fyi.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NEOS2HO2ITOC6GKUN2Q4DZHZCA Daniel

and eventually yes you will, only people who won’t are on leaked gb already

      • david

        Thanks

  • david

how do I get the update?

  • david

I am on 2.2.1 will i get the update?

    • Tim242

Stop asking the same damn question over and over. It has been answered many times.

  • Tezhrec

I am rooted and removed much of the bloatware. Will that keep the OTA from applying to my X?

    • Tezhrec

I’m still running the stock OS, but I used root and Titanium Backup to get rid of the crap VZW added. I’d hate to have to put all that junk back on simply to get an update…

      • John

welp, learn to not hate it =P
        (if you want gb)

  • John

    http://www.mediafire.com/?1u3yjx30df37kyy

there’s the “silent” OTA…if anyone wnats to take a gander. & no, u can’t manually install this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/element.eight Eric Cloutier

feverishly checking here as well…unrooted, running 2.3.340, and waiting patiently. c’mon, c’mon, c’mon!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NEOS2HO2ITOC6GKUN2Q4DZHZCA Daniel

I think since you are already on the leaked GB you won’t get the full one unless you flash or sbf back to 2.2.1
EDIT: Sorry was thinking android version not system version. The GB System version will be around 4.5.x

  • Efballa32

Dearborn michigan, just got the update and lovin it :)

    • Anonymous

      Pics or it didn’t happen.

  • Alphabets13

so to my understanding if we are on the GB leak we will not be affected. you have to sbf back to stock to receive this update….and if you are on stock and dont want the update then you have to remove a certain apk from the system.

  • John

the 1 user who has received the OTA notice posted here:

    ongoing discussion..

  • Mth2134

Guys and gals….. it’s not on the google servers yet. Hence the reason u can’t pull it. There’s a reason it’s a silent push!

I’ll be keeping the leaked version for a while. Chances are it will be difficult to impossible to gain root access after you’ve run the OTA.

For those saying “the devs will do it,” don’t count on it. AFAIK there’s no real way to gain root access on the original leaked version even; you have to install the pre-rooted version.

did yall read this only updates if you are on a 340 build…and p3Droid says it is a silent update, so you wont even know that you get the update

      • Anonymous

It will tell you it downloaded an update and it’s time to restart the phone. It wont ask you if you want to download it though. That’s the silent part

    • DroidzFX

Youll be saying damn it when your stuck with a non rooted bloated phone with VZ navigator at your side.

      • http://twitter.com/CamDroid CamDroid

except you can sbf. and he’s working on root right now.

        • DroidzFX

i hate when that happens haha

I am curious if 45 people actually “liked” this post, or if Michal_NM just logged out, cleared cache, and came back 45 times as a guest and “liked” this post. Seriously out of the whole community here, I doubt that 1. 45 people have a droid x that is not rooted, and 2. 45 people who do have a non-rooted droid x and they come to this forum. It has been made clear that if you are rooted then you will not be getting this “silent” update, because it is just that “silent” so I doubt that anybody was able to pull the update anyways

LMFAO..funny thing is he has 56 likes….so I took some out of it….lmfao…was trying to be funny, but seriously micahel_nm posts on everything…and I got to say that post was not that funny…

        • cgood

          Make that two of us!

      • MAAACE!

If you’re still curious, I liked it because its funny to me. Why would you assume only DX people would like or comment on a DX posting? That would be would be silly. Especially since I went through the same thing when the newest update for the DInc started rolling out. I was checking that badboy and cursing every few minutes. It’s funny because it’s true for some of us.

        • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

Yes it is funny, the funny thing is that the OG, and the Dinc did not have pull to update…You had to get it pushed to the device. So all that time checking for updates for nothing

          • MAAACE!

Wow….I assume you’re a nice guy, but you’re coming off as a hater. Maybe one day all of us will be as awesome as you.

      Unfortunately never.

Man, new bootloader? This total BS!!! I love motorola hardware and VZW network but this locking down the phones is jst insane. Seriously my next phone will be a Nexus :P

    • LivinFree

The Nexus will be your only option if that is your concern. This is not only a Moto thing VZW is forcing all the mfgs to lock up the devices. And soon HTC, Sammy, LG..e.tc will all be locked just like the Motos are today. And heck from one contact I know Sammy could be even worse then Moto if they get done what they are working on. Can’t go into details but if you think a locked bootloader is bad you haven’t seen anything yet.

      • Anonymous

As if anyone needed another reason to pass on a Samsung phone.

      • Anonymous

HTC already started w/ the Thunderbolt.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106808261 Keith Sumner

Mfg’s are going to start sending force-bricking devices OTA in the near future to modified phones, and for people abusing their data or tethering illegally. Most likely will see fines as well.

          • Anonymous

I doubt that. If you’re smart enough to root you’re smart enough to block silent updates. At least you should be.

          • Anonymous

That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. “force bricking”… LOLOLOL Good gosh man, loosen your tinfoil hat.

        • Mr.Joe

The G2 had it also big rob @_@

          • Anonymous

            Only heard about the Thunderbolt.

        • Anonymous

But the Thunderbolt has been completely unlocked. While they did lock it, they did it so it could be undone. Who knows, the T-bolt may be the last unlocked phone.

          • Anonymous

            lets hope not.

      • Mr.Joe

        Yes.

Motorola and Verizon went all around and convinced LG, Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, ZTE, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Lady Gaga; that locking their phones was the best thing they could do.

  • Msk1277

doubt it.. Verizon would send out a memo.

  • Tayeva135

Is there a way to get the official if I’m running the leaked 2.3?

    • http://twitter.com/Mooem7 Dave Trivino

I’d imagine not if past leaks and OTAs are any indication. This will only roll out to those on stock droid x. You’d have to SBF back and just wait till it’s your turn if that’s the route you want to take.

    • Anonymous

if wouldnt be a leak if it could get official updates… kinda defeats the point…

  • Mth2134

Fyi it only will install on stock 340 official. Also p3 posted an apk to remove if u wish to stop the install as it is a silent push. Any mods to 340 and install will fail. -per p3

    • fartbubbler

      how do you know that?

      • Anonymous

because thats how its always worked. you have to be using the new official software in order to install an update.

      • Mth2134

Or follow p3 and cellzealot. :) he already tore it apart.

  • fartbubbler

If I’m rooted and rommed (Liberty 1.5), would the OTA notification even show up? Or would I have to revert back to my stock backup to see if it’s available to me?

    • Anonymous

correct you would have to go back to stock

    • The350zWolf

As far as I understand, to get the upgrade you need to be stock running 2.3.340, so no with liberty your safe. Follow P3droid on twitter to get the whole story. The other bit of info is the update is being pushed silently 8^o

  • Jeremy

Hopefully this means the D2 version isn’t far behind and they fixed the few problems there are in the older build. Now just to wait a couple of days to see how this pans out and if a newer rooted D2 version pops up to upgrade to…..
