Download: DROIDX Gingerbread V4.5.588

Well here you go.  The random OTA update of Gingerbread for the DROIDX that we talked about earlier is out for everyone to enjoy manually.  Just know that you have to be completely stock on Blur 2.3.340 in order to run this update file.  There is no root at this time, but we’re hoping to have a version with root some time tonight.  And this is for everyone, including non-rooted users.  Actually, this is easiest for non-rooted users.

Download:  Blur_Version.2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US.zip

Instructions:

*Note 1* – For non-rooted users. You have to be running stock 2.3.340 or this will not work.

*Note 2* – To rooted users, you will need to SBF back to 2.3.340.

*Note 3* – P3Droid is hoping to have a rooted version up by tonight.

*Note 4* – We still aren’t sure if this is the final Verizon build or not.

1.  Download the file from above and drop it on the root of your SD card.
2.  Rename it to update.zip.
3.  Turn your phone all the way off.
4.  Boot into recovery:

*Hold the Home button + Power.  When triangle appears, press Search.

5.  Choose the option to install update.zip using your volume keys.
6.  Your phone will now load the new Gingerbread.
7.  Enjoy!

Cheers @P3Droid for this file!

Will the new 4.5.596 update over this version of 4.5.588 ?

Will this version of 4.5.588 upgrade normally via Verizon OTA release of 4.5.596 ?

    verifying update package
    E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

    can’t figure it out

  • Droidxrocks

Only a month behind, but just installed 2.3.3 and it’s working flawlessly.  Thanks for providing this!

  • RC

Thank you!!! Exciting, like getting a new phone!

  • RC

Regarding Step 2 – renaming to “Update.zip” didn’t work for me.  Read comments and tried renaming to “update” and that worked.  Still installing – scary.

I actually love this style compared to the other ones.

  • Kuboo99

This may seem like a dumb question, but if I have a nandroid backup of stock 2.3.340 and restore that, would I be able to install this? Or do I have to SBF? Thanks

    • Rlorenz

You’d be better off SBF’ing. You can try to backup and unroot, but it’ll be easier if you SBF the little guy.  It’s just the humane thing to do.

Anyone else having problems with the sync icon staying in the status bar? Mines been there all day.

I just spent over an hour talking to Motorola first on chat then over the phone. i had 2 big questions 1. when will gingerbread be out for the droid x and 2. is the system version ending in .588 the official release. He was able to inform me that .588 is the official release, but that there has been no confirmed date. The reason there are reports of people receiving .588 OTA is through Motorola you can sign up for early releases (testers) I believe this is why there are reports of some people having the OTA update. Here is the link to the Motorola forum that should give you early updates in the future.

  • WanabeNerd

The only difficulty I had was launcher Pro, after the upgrade it kept bogging down. after a few battery removals and rebooting I was able to remove Launcher Pro (free version) and now the phone runs perfectly.

  • Tyler Stephenson

anyone else getting an error saying:

    (no such file or directory)?

    • Jackreilly818

mine had the same issue. this means that when you renamed the file “update.zip” your phone already registered it as a .zip so the phone is looking for “update.zip.zip” try renaming it “update” and it should work

I have some news. Some possible, some weird. I posted a number of times starting last Thursday how this update installed well on my non-rooted Droid X, but then the phone got flaky as could be, the buttons did not work, it froze constantly. VZW, Best Buy, and Motorola could not help me. VZW finally got me a replacement which came yesterday.
I was glad to see all my paid apps came back automatically, but neither AppBrain which I synched regularly, nor the Android or Amazon App markets could automatically bring back my free apps.

After getting most of them back, today, for the first time in two days, turned back on my original Droid X with the Gingerbread update. I wanted to see if I could get in the app drawer for a few seconds at a time to see what apps I had missed.

All of a sudden and for the first time in dozens of reboots by taking out the battery, I was suddenly seeing the lock screen and everything worked! Amazing. Still, I think I will wipe it and send it back.

So here is the possible good news. I was talking with Motorola support and at the end of the conversation asked if she had any idea when Gingerbread for the Droid X will roll out from VZW. She put me on hold and came back a few minutes later and said it would be out May 10th! I do not know if it is true, but I can wait until then for the officially released Gingerbread.

That is the end of the various reports on this topic. Good luck to you others. From playing with Gingerbread I think it a great update.

I was told by a Motorola support rep yesterday that the OTA Gingerbread update for Droid X will start on May 10.

  • Robodroid

Im getting status 7 errors when verifying the system, the file is named correctly and i flashed back to 2.3.340. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening :/

    • Robodroid

The error itself looks like this
      Verifying current system. . .
assert failed: apply_patch_check(“MTD:boot:Long sequence of letters/numbers”)
      E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
      (status 7)
      installation aborted.

Ive downloaded the file from more than one place and have been looking for advice all over just wondering if anyone else encountered this problem and if they were able to solve it?

Question: this will wipe ALL of data, right?

Any recommended backup apps other than ASTRO’s?

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

Yes when you do the factory reset it will wipe all of your data. As for the app back up titanium pro i believe it’s called is good if you don’t mind a paid app.

  • DroidX1980

I have fully installed gingerbread on my Droid X. My problem is the sync symbol appears next to my 3G symbol. I try to go back into my recovery mode with the power off, restarting holding the home and power button until the Motorola icon appears, I let go of the power button and continue holding the home button until the exclamation point appears, I push my search buttton but it never goes into recovery mode. Can someone please help so I can wipe data and reset?

    • DroidX1980

I just went back to 2.3.340 using RSD Lite and was able to wipe the data and cache and reinstalling Gingerbread. Gonna try it again and see if that helps the situtation.

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

In order to do a factory reset you hold the home and power like normal, but then to get to the menu it’s both volume buttons then the power button to select. A factory reset will get rid of the sync symbol for you

  • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

Yes you can go back to froyo by SBFing to 2.3.340 and other than that that’s the only way you’ll get the OTA

  • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

you’ll have to SBF back to 2.3.340

  • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

Turn the phone completely off and try to SBF back to Froyo ver. 2.3.340 via this tutorial –
    http://www.droid-life.com/2010/09/21/how-to-return-droid-x-back-to-android-2-1/
    Use RSD lite ver 4.9
and moto drivers 5.0 (you’ll have to register as a moto dev but it’s free)

You can find the SBF link here-
    http://sites.google.com/site/1kdsdroidx/

Use the very top one that reads Android 2.2.1 System Version 2.3.340

Once you download the necessary stuff just follow the procedure and you’ll be on your way back to a working phone. Basically download and install RSD lit 4.9 and the Moto drivers 5.0, in the RSD lite settings make sure device detect is on first come first serve (that’s how my phone was able to be recognized) Then start your phone in boot recovery (hold both volumes and camera then press start) plug it into your comp, if RSD lite recognizes the phone load the SBF you downloaded (make sure it’s unzipped) and click the start button. Once that happens and the process is done your phone will restart but probably get stuck in bootloader which you just pull the battery launch the phone in recovery mode (home and power) then do a factory reset and you should be good to go. You may have to call *228 and reactivate the phone after all this but that’s easy.

this worked for me and im back on stock with my dx so i guess the only thing i can do now is wait for gingerbread again lol.

the only problem im having is i cant get my backup assistant working i click forgot pin and it tells me my pin and so i put that pin in and it says its incorrect.

  • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

If you run any leaked firmware, then as soon as an OTA comes out you’ll have to SBF back to 2.3.340 and then factory reset

  • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

Press down both volume keys to enter the menu then tap the power button to select and you’ll be golden

  • Ginny004

If we do this, will we still receive the official OTA update when Verizon sends it out?

    • http://profiles.google.com/d.michaud333 Dakota Michaud

You’ll have to SBF it back to 2.3.340 which isn’t hard at all

HELP. when i reboot my phone displays an android with a triangle sign with a ! in the middle. pressing the search button does nothing

  • Chayes407

for anyone having issues. I had plenty of trouble initially, I pulled the battery a bunch and thought I bricked my phone. I left it be for a bit and suddenly the lock screen appeared and everything started working. Since then I have not had a single problem it works flawlessly I have done every thing I can think of no problems at all *I did the factory wipe/reset* gmail account syncs everything I recommend wifi tho

  • Anonymous

i got my dx running the first leaked version of gingerbread from this site would it be a better idea to wait for the final release from verizon before updating again? would that one require a wipe also because i dont want to get rid of all my stuff and have to reinstall everything again…

  • Xzombiex66

Just to be sure before i do this, im rooted but all stock no custom roms. Do i need to unroot before doing this? and also will i lose all my apps, i know i can back them up in astro.

  • Scott in MA

My Droid X is now effectively hosed. The screen blanks when you touch, the only way to turn it off is to remove the battery, you cannot do a soft or hard reset as all the hard buttons do not seem to work right. VZW & MOTO could not help, nor could Best Buy (where I bought the phone). I tried to plug it into my laptop to get to the card and delete the update file, but cannot do that. I could get a call occasionally, but could not make any. Could sometimes see the App drawer, but not activate anything. I did have connectivity according to the bars and 3G statuses on the top bar. But the clock never changed after I turned it on each time.
So I may have to actually send my phone in for repair. First time I ever did something like this and this is what happened. I thought the worst would be a hard reset. I would take even that now.
I have to go away to help the US Military Reserves this weekend and now will go without use of my phone, calendar, the web, contacts, etc. Sigh.

    • Matreyu13

Scott, I installed the leak the first night and had several issues from the start. Some similar to yours, more particularly my phone was freezing and rebooting several times in a 10 minute window. Strange part tho, I put it into Airplane mode and it became stable enough for me to flash it back to Froyo. It took a few attempts in between freezes and/or reboots to put it into airplane mode so don’t give up.

      • Scott in MA

Thanks for the information. How did you get it in Airplane mode? Once it boots and connects and I have what looks like my screen if I try to swipe or touch it in any way, the whole screen blanks except for the notification bar at top. I cannot get that to move. And the clock never changes. It is almost like I am seeing a graphic representation of my home screen.

        • Scott in MA

So now I have tried the remove battery, replace and reboot a number of times. I never get the lock screen, often it locks up. Sometimes I can scroll left or right. But touching an app causes it to lock up, the screen go blank except for the notification bar, and pressing the power button only blanks the screen entirely and wakes it up, nothing else.

    • Chayes407

dude leave it be for a while I had the same issues and then suddenly it just started working on its own. After that i did the factory reset/wipe and now everything is perfect. i know it sounds weird but I really did have the same problems and after I just left it alone it suddenly all appeared and worked

      • Scott in MA

Thanks for the advice. But none of the buttons work right. I could press power and home on boot up and get to the right screen but the volume buttons would not do anything so I could look at the screen and change nothing. I have removed and reinstalled the batter and restarted the phone many times and it is flaky as can be. Please define awhile and did you have problems with the buttons not working as I have?

        • Scott in MA

I am not sure what was meant by leave it alone. I pull the battery, put it back, power up the phone, and leave it alone for hours. But it always seizes. Screen goes blank if you touch it or push a button. Occasionally, when it first comes up I try an app, but shortly it freezes and nothing will change until I pull the battery and start over. I guess I will wait until the new Droid X arrives on Tuesday and send this one back. I just hope the one I get at least has FROYO already on it and that with Verizon’s backup and AppBrain’s synch, I will be able to get my phone back fairly painlessly. I really wish this had worked after the install said it was successful.
