LauncherPro Update Brings Gmail Widget, New Screen Transitions and Fixes

LauncherPro (Plus) finally received its Gmail widget today along with a couple of new homescreen transitions, and some other fixes. Been a while since we’ve had an update, right? No word on the full re-write, but this should hold you over for a while…

New Gmail widget for Plus users!

New “Flip” and “Rotate 2″ homescreen transition effects. The old “Flip” transition is now called “Flip 2″.

Facebook login is now done through the official Facebook app (where available).

Updated the Twitter widget code to fix some issues.

OK, I love LP Pro but I downloaded the update and it force stops every time I unlock my phone. Now what?

I loved LP. But it got to the point where I wanted to throw my phone through a brick wall. It kept shutting down and restarting (up to about 7 or 8 times a day)… so I finally axed it. That I would rather deal with regular stock android and motoblur is really saying something. I think ill hold off until the rewrite is released.

Anyone else have the same issue?

PS when using the Facebook widget it would never update. Just show statuses from some date back in October. Sound familiar at all?

It is my hope that the 1.0 release will include transparent widgets, because otherwise, I’ll just keep using the mod provided by our beloved XDA developers.

I love LPP, but the gmail widget is useless.. Its faster to hit my dock icon if im not on the page with the gmail widget.. I have 7 screens.

You should be able to un highlite it by hitting the back button once

For some reason, the LauncherPro app drawer has been extremely laggy on Pete’s GPA14 ROM.. Weird thing is, LauncherPro is perfect except for the app drawer. And every other GPA ROM has worked fine with it except GPA14. Anybody seem to have a fix?

I just bought launcher pro plus and have no gmail widget nor can I upgrade to 0.8,4? anyone else having this problem??

Meh, my little d1 can’t handle the transitions still Gingerbread + transitions = a crawling phone. The gmail widget is meh, I’d still rather click my icon too. If it could get around the limitation of opening the whole thread, then I’d probably say otherwise. Widgets still seem to be the only plus for this launcher, and we all know what I say about that

Were you using one of signals23′s lpp skins, such as the honeycomb one shown on this site a while back?

Regardless of the cause, the fix is the same: First, go to launcherpro preferences and make a backup of your homescreens and settings. Then uninstall lp and reinstall it from the market, and restore your backup.

Im using PE 5.2 w/ the honeycomb theme. I am having the same problem as Kelly. I cant even uninstall LP, there is not even an option to do so in Manage Apps Screen or in the Market. I have switched ROMs and and it downloads but then I switch back to PE 5.2 and it reverts to LP 8.3

Nice! Launcher has always worked smoother for me that ADW for some reason. The only thing I wish it had was the counters for the regular email app and maybe Google Voice and facebook.

“Sorry! Activity LaucherPro (in application laucherPro) is not responding.” Ever since the last update when the phone wakes up or you unlock it it freezes then that message appears. I’ve reinstalled it several times. GO launcher and ADW both run flawless! I am hope the rewrite solves this problem.

My LauncherPro still has a HUGE lag after wake up. Every time the force close window comes up. I’ve tried multiple re-instals and this update still has the same issue. (DX never been rooted) I’ve switched over to GO Launcher and haven’t had a single issue. I’ll retry again after the rebuild…although I am really loving the GO Launcher more everyday.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I can’t update this on my phone. I’m using the Project Elite ROM v.5.0.2 that came with Launcher Pro v0.8.3. I have the Plus version. Do I have to wait for the ROM to be updated? When I try to update it to v0.8.4 from the market, I get a “Package file was not signed correctly” error.

The reason it can’t update is because it is loaded into system/app not data/app.

Ok I installed adw, set it as default, uninstalled LP, rebooted, but I am still getting the install error saying the package was not properly signed, thoughts?

Ended up having to uninstall LP though TiBu since I guess the uninstall in Elite Options didn’t actually work. After doing that and rebooting, I was able to reinstall the new version of LP

My problem with Launcher Pro (especially the free version without any access to the widgets) is that it asks for Waaaaaaaay too many permissions to your data compared to say ADW Launcher, or even Go Launcher. I mean, if you can not access the social widgets, except with the paid version, why does the free version require so many?

Because the free and the paid versions are the same program. I’m sure if there were two separate programs, the free one would not need the same permissions.

Because, it is the same APP. The other items are actually there, without the key to unlock them, you may not be able to use them… but they ARE THERE, thus the need for the permissions.

I understand why people get hesitant about permmissions, but in cases like this, you know what the permissions are used for, so what is the issue? Yes, we all need to be dilligent about privacy, but there is a time when it is overboard. In cases for things like a launcher… it needs the permissions to work properly because it touches basically everything you do with the phone at some point. If it is a company you do not know or trust… then by all means, WAIT and let it get vetted out by others first. But there comes a time eventually if you want something as pervasive in the experience as a launcher, that you are going to have to trust to give permissions, else leave it stock.

Or you could just download an alternate launcher like ADW Launcher EX, or Go Launcher (I have both) because they request less permissions, don’t have all those intrusive widgets I’d never use anyway, and because of that are generally faster and more feature packed than Launcher Pro.

And that is why we use Android rather than Apple… choices. Yes, you can trade off functionality and features if they are something you do not need. But that is a different discussion, much like the additional requirements if you added some of the additional pieces of Go Launcher… whether it is better to break it in to pieces or in one neat package, is different from whether their are “unneeded” or superfluous rights.

That’s part of my problem. I’m generally weary of apps that ask for more permissions than are warranted, and Launcher Pro (free) falls under that category for me. I’m still uncomfortable giving him that much access to my data.

Actually there was a article (in the NYT I think?) that talks about how programs are selling information about your phone to third parties. The big uproar was about programs like Pandora, but I remember that LP was one of the programs on the list. I was a bit disappointed because I paid for my upgrade so it sucks that LP would still sell my info.
