Amazon App Store Opens, Angry Birds Rio is Today’s FREE App of the Day

The Amazon AppStore is live!  Wait…why do we need another app store again?  It does have the new Angry Birds Rio though, and it’s available today for free as the paid app of the day.  To get the appstore, head to Amazon’s website, or download it through the Amazon app in the Android Market.  After that, you should download AB Rio right away before it’s cut off.

What about the new Amazon AppStore though?  Well, it looks decent.  You can browse Amazon’s site to find apps that you may like, click to purchase them, and then find them waiting for download in the app.  It’s a nice concept, I’m still just not sure why we need another app store that has all of the same apps as the regular Android Market.

Anyways, go download Rio!  And AT&T customers…looks like you are S.O.L.

Cheers Stephen, Brock, Matt and everyone else!

Sweet. We need a new app store because the other didn’t work and google controls it with an iron fist… Oh.. wait. Never mind.

What a pain in the ass to download, but once you have it installed, great times. Loving the new game.

It doesn’t use the correct name on the apk file but i already found where on the SD card that amazon puts the apps you download. This is going to lead to easier piracy of apps.

  • helpme

I can’t download the free angry birds rio.
i keep getting this: “To purchase Angry Birds Rio, please add a payment method in your 1-click settings.”
i already turned on 1 click settings and i checked my amazon account and have a payment method set.

  • Gottheguds112

I was having trouble downloading onto multiple devices earlier. It seems it takes a long time for Amazon to update your purchased apps. I would go to dl it on my Xoom and it would say AB Rio was already purchased, and to download it from the ‘my apps’ section, but lo and behold it was nowhere to be found… for hours.

Is this going to be par for the course, or launch day jitters?

  • Bigwalrus23

    Im already tired of angrybirds

  • Anonymous

This is BS!!! “buying” the app only gets you THE AMAZON APP store app NOT Rio Angry Bird app. .

    BOYCOTT AMAZON!!!!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

what do you mean….RIO angry brids is playing fine on my OG droid.

  • Anonymous

couldn’t download it north of the 52 states

  • DJyoSNOW

I musy be a noob angry birds & seasons are free in my market on cell…Huh?

    • Scott H

Correct – it’s Rio that’s only available via Amazon.

  • Anonymous

Angry Birds Rio – look out for the golden pineapples!

  • DJyoSNOW

I must be a noob angry birds & seasons are free in my phones market… Say What??

  • Rain_king46

I was just trying to download a free skeeball type game. I started the download then tried to go back and look for more stuff and got a popup wanting to take me back to the download page. Apparently apps wont download in the background. That is kind of gay and would be super annoying if you had to do a reinstall.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to take heat for saying this, but. Angry Birds Rio from Amazon is probably the most well polished Angry Birds game I’ve seen to date. Well done!

    • Chris Nimon

I agree, it does have much better graphics and runs smoother.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

It runs not only a lot smoother, but 500x smoother on my OG droid. The last update to angry birds was getting me about every 3rd time I opened the app I would have to restart my droid.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1501095082 Chris Hughes

I think it’s funny that they are charging for apps that are free in the Android Market.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

What apps are you referring to? If you’re talking about Angry Birds, the non-free versions in the Amazon Appstore are also Ad-Free. The Amazon Appstore also has the same, Ad-supported free versions that are in the android market.

    error wont install FAIL

    • Guest

No problems with the install for me. I guess I didn’t fail. Better luck in your next life.

    • Chris Nimon

sounds like a problem from way back. I believe a fix for some people was “enabling browser downloads” in your file manager. In Astro you click menu, more, preferences, then check the box for enable browser downloads.

  • Bahnfire Vt

Despite having to jump through multiple hoops to get my Amazon account sync’d, seems to be working fine. Though the Angry Birds Rio download is taking forever…

  • Chris Nimon

much better graphics and runs way smoother. Wonder if they’ll keep giving us quality apps for the free app a day or if we’ll be getting a bunch of farting naked Taiwanese girls. Uh wait, those are 2 different apps :)

    • Anonymous

“Wonder if they’ll… …a bunch of farting naked Taiwanese girls”

One can only hope and dream!

      • Chris Nimon

lol, that would make a great video ringtone for the wife :)

  • Anonymous

While I eagerly downloaded the paid version of Angry Birds and the daily special AB Rio, I do wonder how this new use of DRM will affect ROM switchers. For example, if we wipe data to switch ROMs, will the Amazon app store re-sync your purchases or are you out of luck? I wonder how Titanium Backup will handle this as well (market links for amazon market apps, data for these apps, …).

    • Chris Nimon

      Good question.
The receipt Amazon sent me has an order number and it says it keeps track of your orders in your Amazon account so maybe we can re-download it that way. OR maybe if its stored on our sd card we can just reinstall it.

    • Anonymous

It’s probably linked to your amazon account and restorable. This is just an assumption but it would make sense.

Does anybody know if “free app of the day” means that the app is free to use today and if I want to keep using it tomorrow I will have to purchase it? or once I have the free app I am good to go unless i uninstall?

    • guesst

It’s yours once you download it. You won’t need to pay for it.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

I doubt very much that once you download it you’ll be charged for it tomorrow.

As for your other point, I’m wondering that myself. Once uninstalled will you have to pay for it to get it back or not…

  • http://www.facebook.com/mobrienjr Michael OBrien

not a fan, but not a hater. I see why they are doing it. I will make sure to check it out daily to see what the free app of the day is. To me that alone is worth downloading.

  • http://twitter.com/mnguyea David Nguyen

Went to see what all the commotion was about and all I have to say nope. It’s just another to check. I’m sticking to the Market. I think it has grown and the recent changes has made it much better. I use it with Appbrain and its perfect.

So Rovio, if you want me to keep playing Angry Birds but the fricken game in the ‘official’ market where everyone has access to it. Squawk that.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

If Google wanted to kill the Amazon Appstore outright and not worry about competition they should just buy Appbrain and merge it’s awesomeness into the actual Android Market.

  • Mth2134

Problem I see is updating. As amazon app store doesn’t recognize the apps u have on your phone unless u dl them from AAS. So anything u get from AMP, AAS will say it’s not on your phone. We need a little work together here.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

That’s true but it’s not something Amazon should try to worry about…that’ll just create a complicated mess. Amazon’s app can handle updating Amazon purchased apps and Google’s can handle it’s own to.
Otherwise it’s like saying that the Android Market should keep track of and update apps you install that you download.

  • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

Am I the only one that thinks Amazon way outdid Google here when it comes to the quality of their app store (the app store alone, I’m not talking about the actual apps in it)?

It just seems so much more like what the Android market should be. It’s sleek, well organized, you can sort apps based on relevance, popularity, by how recently they were added. It also uses amazons review and recommendation systems.

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Google — That fact alone will probably keep me using the good-ol’ Android Market, but I hope Google is taking some design notes here, and I hope the plan to act fast, otherwise they stand to have a very serious competitor when it comes to non-power-users and their app stores.

On a side note, I STILL don’t think Google needs to sink to the Apple/Amazon level when it comes to policing the Market. I still say they should take a “Twitter approach” and mark all the apps that *have* passed a strict quality test as being “Verified by Google” or something, and leave the rest there without it.

    • Anonymous

not at all, I also think it looks and operates a lot better – at least so far. I also think the “verified by google” idea is great, especially for free apps.

  • Brian

Free is great but… so far… I’m sticking with Android Market. As stated before, having the Amazon Appstore installed is required to run the Angry Birds Rio (more than likely for all Amazon downloaded apps) I don’t want to stay logged into amazon (security reasons) What about connection issues? If I don’t have a signal or am using an older non activated phone, then what? I can’t use any of the apps? LAME Also, will amazon downloaded apps only update through amazon and not google market? They don’t show as downloaded apps in the phone settings. They don’t display notifications that they are downloading or installing. Now I have to compare app versions in Amazon to Google. Which is newer / best? Two separate app stores = fragmentation & confusion. Not a good scenario. The more I type and think about this, the worse an idea it seems. I’m happy with Android Market and that’s where I’ll be staying. It works. It’s streamlined. It’s a winner.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

My understanding is that while yes, you do have to keep the Amazon Appstore installed, it only has to phone-home to amazon at first-run. The rest of the time it just checks with the Appstore app. So connection issues shouldn’t be a problem.

I could very easily be wrong though.

      http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/03/07/amazon-app-stores-drm-to-be-more-restrictive-than-googles/

“Update: In response to the concerns raised here, Amazon posted the following clarifications, which definitely tone down their previous language quite a bit:
“In response to your questions, we’d like to take this opportunity to provide a few clarifications.
Do I have to use Amazon DRM if I sell my app through Amazon.com?
No, it is not required. When you submit your app you can choose to offer your app DRM free or you can apply Amazon DRM.
Do customers need to have internet access to use an Amazon DRM-enabled app?
No. Once an app is installed, a user can use the app without having internet access.
How can you verify that the user has an entitlement to the app without internet access?
During the installation process for an app, the Amazon Appstore client downloads a small token that grants the user the right to access the application. A valid token permits the user that purchased the app to access their app offline. The Amazon Appstore client will periodically communicate with Amazon servers to refresh the token.”"

  • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Yeah! A really great job to Rovio Mobile for bringing another very addiction Angry Birds game to the masses.

    • Brian

That shouldn’t work. I tried pulling the apk too and it still requires Amazon Appstore be installed. Sorry :(

When it’s not free, or technically even now. That’s pirating. Just a heads up.

  • Anonymous

simple to get and install. works well on my Dinc. Good alternative to the Market place should I be browsing app store on my Mac

    • Alphabets13

haha…i browse the android market all the time on my mbpro….blasphemy!!! hahahaha

  • Alphabets13

i think its worth the free app/day alone.

  • Alan

Much better than the vzw app store. They sure decided to do a stress test on the servers making Angry Birds RIO free on the first day. Looks like out is handling out fine. Snappy.

As to why we need another app store, I can think of two reasons. 1, part with Amazon gift cards for those who live via cash instead of credit.

    2. I suspect they will not allow all the crapware that the virtually unrestricted android market allows.

WOW…they’re charging for the original Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons. the same ones that’re free in the android market. HIGHLY unlikely they’re ad free versions, or else we’d have heard about it.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

They are ad free. The Amazon Appstore ALSO has the free versions that are in the Android Market.

      • Anonymous

        Yep, ad free.

    • Epeterson76

Adults that have an amazon account already don’t have to worry about the boogie man getting our visa card info.

      oooohhh scary.

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

You don’t already have an Amazon account? Fail.
I’m kidding of course. It does seem like that extra step would be a put-off for people not yet willing to pay amazon for any apps.

  • Trent

Unlike Google, Amazon will actually make sure their apps work and are not malware.

  • antintyty
  • Alphabets13

i have no issues with it so far. seems pretty nice. as long as you already have an amazon account then the setup takes about a minute. no biggie.

  • http://heterodoxus.blogspot.com/ dmf

i went through all the bullcrap of entering in my email address, downloading the store, installing it, editing my 1-click pay options on amazon like they asked….

only to be told “amazon app store for android is not yet available for your region” (i’m in the netherlands). if i thought they could feel it instead of my beloved HTC Desire Z, i would have hucked my phone at the wall.

    • Anonymous

it was pretty clear at the top of the amazon page that it is available only in the USA

      • http://heterodoxus.blogspot.com/ dmf

that’s very nice of you to try to show your superiority. and as loveable a quality as it is, i hate to disappoint you. i clicked on the text “Amazon website” in the sentence “To get the appstore, head to Amazon’s website,” in this post.

now, i know i didn’t check with you first to see if this was ok. but i went ahead and did it anyway. i’m crazy like that.

doing it that way, i saw absolutely no indication that it was US only. so if you could do me the favor of shoving your attitude up your ass, i’d greatly appreciate it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OOO7GVPXWATBC75FGMUTLHJJME SjB

what a huge pain getting to d/l that app was. jesus.

  • Rain_king46

If they insist on doing this, Amazon needs to integrate their app store app and their shopping app into one app. If they insist on being a wireless carrier, AT&T needs to get a clue.

    • Anonymous

If the 2 apps merge, then they risk getting the normal Amazon.com app pulled from the Android Market.

      • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

Also it would become a clunky mess. One app, one purpose. Otherwise the “Amazon Mega App” would become about as useful as Windows Media Player if all you want to do is listen to music…it would work, but that’s a lotta stuff to ignore to do just one thing.

Plus I’d image Amazon wants to replace the Android Market as people’s primary app store, regardless of whether or not they shop at Amazon.com

    • Rain_king46

Setup my account and downloaded RIO. Seemed kinda slow. Registration has a little cumbersome.

  • Kevoskee

Free apps is good but i think i like the deflaut market better. I dont see what is the reason to have the regular market, amazon market, and verizon bloatware market on my thunderbolt. Did i forget appbrain market lol

  • http://twitter.com/djstarion Francisco Rodriguez

I’ll take a free app of the day.

  • Alphabets13

maybe this has a better method of testing apps prior to purchasing them? not sure, i’m going to look into it though.

  • DroidzFX

Im down with free apps of the day.

  • Anonymous

Just a heads up… it’s REQUIRED that you keep the Amazon App store installed on your device to run AB Rio. Booo…. don’t want two app stores!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OOO7GVPXWATBC75FGMUTLHJJME SjB

seriously?! not worth it. uninstalling it out of spite. screw amazon.

      • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Wow…having two Amazon apps on your device at the same time…wow, that’s the worst thing ever. [sarcasm]

Come on…it’s Angry Birds, and this new ‘Rio’ game is so worth it. It’s a lot of fun, even if you have to do a few extra steps.

        • Anonymous

You only have to have the amazon app store installed. You can uninstall the other one.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

            Exactly!

          • Anonymous

I don’t see the big deal either. I think people just want to find reasons to complain.

          • Anonymous

Its not two amazon apps it the whole two Markets. In stead of working and making the one better they made a second. So now devs will have to pick which one do i want to have my app for? And I just dont like Amazons DRM’s been a amazon user for years but i will never use there mp3 service just cause of there DRM’s. As far as RIO goes its a great game and that may be the only reason i keep amazon market for. And FYI Apple is already suing for the “appstore” part of the name. So i see a name changing coming soon.

          • Anonymous

Wait, Apple is suing someone? That just doesn’t seem right. Is this real life?!

          • Aker

            Is this just fantasy?

          • Chris

Come on. Give Apple a break. they need to make money somehow. After android phones were released and basically started to slowly end iphones popularity Apple lost alot of money. lmao. they need to make it back somehow. even if it means looking like complete retards and most likely losing the law suit.

          • Calculatorwatch

Haha, it’s a store that sells apps, and yet they can’t call it an app store? That’s pathetic I hope they don’t change it and just give Apple the finger instead

          • braino

Google controls their market, so only they can make it better. Looks like now they have more of an incentive to do so. Devs also don’t have to decide either or, they can have their app in both.

          • Mrjoel

I’m all for opposing DRM, but you do realize that Amazon’s MP3 store has always been DRM free, right? There’s just an ID3 tag indicating the id, and that’s it…

          • Anonymous

I had always heard it had DRm built in it as well. Very interesting, Thanks
            for that.

          • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Exactly again..just reasons to complain. If there’s not enough bad things happening in the world, people find ways to complain about extremely small things. It’s f’n free for f’n sakes..either download or don’t..just don’t complain about it.

          • http://www.twitter.com/dailydroidapp AndroFan

It’s DRM, and it’s a restriction on how you’re allowed to use your device. You may not see it as a problem, but some see it as a massive one (myself included).

          • Chris

No. it’s not a massive problem. it’s barely a small problem. all android phones come with a market that lets u download free and paid apps but amazon just released their own market. and one of the exclusive apps is an angry bird app. You know about angry birds? you should. theres already 2 angry birds apps on the original market. well amazon released an exclusive angry birds app into their market. I have a really easy and simple solution if u dont want 2 markets taking up space on your phone to play 1 of the 3 angry birds. Just don’t download the amazon market and dont download the exclusive angry bird app. then there won’t b any reason to complain and you can even download 2 of the 3 angry birds apps on the original market.

          • http://www.twitter.com/dailydroidapp AndroFan

No, it IS a massive problem. I’m without Angry Birds Rio now…don’t really care, don’t even like Angry Birds. But I will care when when other developers start to make the move there, for whatever reason. Piracy is a legitimate concern, but encouraging proprietary DRM is not the solution – history has shown that to be an utter disaster in pretty much every case.

          • adp

Is it DRM when Microsoft releases and Xbox 360 only game? Didn’t think so. You’re reaching.

          • adp

Is it DRM when Microsoft releases and Xbox 360 only game? Didn’t think so. You’re reaching.

          • fish1552

Well, Amazon paid for the rights to distribute, so they have the right to require you to install their app. Don’t like it, don’t install it, and don’t f’n complain about it. You probably have 10 other apps on your phone taking up space tat you use once in a Blue Moon, yet you wanna complain about 1 app you might use a few times more than that.

  • Rob

anyone else getting an error when trying to install? I’m in the US so that isn’t the issue…just keep getting an error. Droid Incredible

    • Rob

I should say getting an error when installing Angry Birds Rio. I installed the Amazon AppStore fine.

      • Chris

Same here. It downloads then says either there was an error with the file or the app won’t install. Sometimes I have to unmount the SD card to get apps to install/update, but says this app requires the SD card.

        Unrooted Droid 2

        • Anonymous

I’m with you. Same experience. No install. Droid X.

        • Raven

It installed just fine on my Droid 2 Global.

        • Scott H

Same issue for me with Droid X in US. App Store installed fine, but the game install fails. It downloads, but then says “application not installed.”

I also always have to unmount my SD card to install other Angry Birds updates, and that is only the case for Angry Birds. I’ve never had an issue with any other apps. But when I unmount the SD in this case it says an SD card is required. And I don’t see any options in the App Store to install to the phone instead of SD. :(

        • Lstout

Both the AppStore and game installed fine on my Droid X, but I am not rooted and am running ADW Launcher. So far, I haven’t been brave enough to try to root my device.

      • Bullet Tooth Tony

I dunno… I guess I’ll ask the obvious question, so no offense ;-)… but did you leave the box checked to install apps from Unknown Sources?

        • Rob

Yes, I left the box checked – that’s not the issue. Glancing through the Amazon reviews looks like a decent number of people with Incredibles or Evos are having similar issues.

      • Nick

Found this comment in the Amazon App Store and it worked for me on unrooted DX in USA.

“Hook your phone to your PC, CUT and paste the .android_secure folder onto your PC (in case you need later). It will recreate on your phone. Disconnect your phone and install Rio. Worked Great! “

        • Todd

I’m using Astro (free version) and there is no CUT option. There is a Delete option, but when I click Delete it gives me an error message saying, “error deleting files.” Is there another way to cut the folder to the computer? Also, I cannot view the .android_secure folder on my computer.

          • Todd

Fixed it! I switched USB Connection type to USB Mass Storage. Then I found the .android_secure folder on my computer. I opened the folder and deleted the smdl2tmp1.asec file. I then disconnected the phone from the PC, installed Angry Birds Rio and it worked!

          • http://profiles.google.com/jcmessenjah Justin Curry

I dont see an .android_secure folder when I connect to my macbook but if I use Astro it shows up … cannot figure out how to get this thing installed, called customer service, got no help, any suggestions? It seems the file smdl2tmp isnt on my phone??

    • Anonymous

      Installed fine on my DX.

    • Hater McHaterson

Rooted DX in the US. Installed and played just fine.

    • ironMB

I had the same problem. I have a 16GB sd card. I always have to unmount it before install Angry Birds updates. Can’t do that here because Amazon app store requires it. I popped in a 1 GB card I have, and this app installed just fine. Then I just copied all of the directories on the 1 GB card to my 16 GB card after the app installed (the 1 GBcard was blank to begin with). Then I put the 16GB back in, went into the Amazon app store, touched Install for Angry Birds Rio, and it ran the app. It must have seen that it was already installed on the SD card, so no install needed. This workaround seemed to work for me, hope it does for others. I’ll be keeping a spare 1 GB sd card with me from now on. :-)

      • ironMB

Note, I DO NOT have the icon using the workaround I just posted, I have to launch the app from the Amazon app store.

      • Anonymous

I am guessing you get a “unknown error 18″ error message when you try to install angry birds, here is a fix for the issue, not just a workaround

connect your phone to the pc with USB cable.
mounted the phone as a usb drive.
used the PC and browse your phone to the ‘.android_secure’ folder
        delete the smdl2tmp1.asec file.
the Android OS will rebuild the file after a reboot and you shouldnt have the problem again
