Skype No Longer Ready for HTC Thunderbolt Launch?

Word started floating around last night that Skype with video might not be ready for launch with the HTC Thunderbolt after all, even though we had a confirmed date of 2/28 from Verizon.  This shot from Best Buy definitely tells a different story and one that has more than a few of us concerned.  By no means should we take this as meaning that it will never see Skype though, but should instead just assume it’ll come later in a software update.

Remember, we sat at CES and saw Skype’s CEO on stage demoing Skype with video on a Thunderbolt first out of all of the devices.  It’s also still plastered all over the VZW 4G page and in HTC’s new commercial, so again, don’t think that the device isn’t going to see it some time soon.  We know that the device release date was pushed way up and was initially supposed to launch around St. Patty’s day which leads us to believe that the technology just isn’t ready yet.

We’ll update this post as we have additional details…

Cheers ___!

can we just take down an.droid-life.com for crying out loud.

I tell you this is painful….. release date the 14th, no the 24th, wait from a reliable source the 28th. I think alot of this is a ploy to see how badly we want it and how much we are willing to pay. And here we all are drooling….

VZW has never confirmed a 2/28 date. That piece of info came from the same people that claimed the release was delayed due to it being too close to the iphone release. Give me a break. If it had come out on the 24th, the 14 day window would have only applied to the people who bought the iphone on the first day.

Skype has really been sucky as of late. It used to get worthwhile upgrades that actually improved stuff. Lately upgrades have seemed more about improving “the look” of the software. Facetime is a clear winner right now. I say that while being an apple hater…

    tmobile sucks

My touch 4G folks! Skype vchat works on T-Mobile.

  • Droid V*rgin

  • Droid V*rgin

Decided to get a real life for the night and got home to see BBY had posted their new weekly ad on their site. Still no date, but Skype still being advertised as a feature. Looking good for Skype, but still bad for us impatient folk…. :'(

  • Narris23

so what other video chat alternatives can we use then if theres no skype and whats the point of a front facing camera then.

  • Beadmaestro

i spoke with a verizon agent a few hours ago. she told me that her store has placed an order and ten phones are set to arrive the 22nd. she also said that was two days earlier than most places. she says they would not be able to sell them the until the 24th, but she told me to come back tuesday because i would be able to tinker with the phone to see if i liked it. she also said there was no advertising because of their contract with iphone. lastly, she mentioned a $50 rebate. she wasn’t sure if that was before or after the $249.99 price for a 2 year contract. i found all this to be quite specific compared to what i’ve been reading. we’ll see.

  • Mr Carteratl

    always a damn set back

so the front facing camera is just for self portraits then…. wow that’s fun… i could just get a mirror… lol cheaper :) and available now :)

    • Anonymous

i know, right? The Nintendo DSi’s FFC is more useful. Using that, I can give myself a sexay clown nose!

  • Anonymous

I’m still waiting for video chat with Google Talk. Forget skype.

  • Narris23

Why are they saying it might come out by st patricks day?

  • Cdunn05

Did anyone else notice that this picture shows that the “HTC Thunderbolt and Inspire 4G are now available”. Does this mean that Best Buy has stock and is ready to release?

    GIVE TO DADDY

  • Guest

Just got off the phone with Best Buy Mobile – They are confirming the 24th

    • Hoot352

Best Buy has confirmed at least 3 separate dates now according to people calling them and asking. There 2 for 3 on being wrong once again.

  • Bogeygolfsucks

This is accurate. I have a customer that does the printing for verizon and they just had him trash the thunderbolt launch stuff he was working on because it had skype all over it. He’s currently reprinting without the skype advertising….

The way it’s been going, we might get Skype for the Thunderbolt before we get the Thunderbolt.

  • http://www.agrstech.com Zephaniah

I fail to see why they can’t just for go the integration (for now) and port the i*phone version of Skype Video to the Thunderbolt.

I am not familiar with the document in the image, but it says, “Available now”. The phone is not available is it? My OG Droid is not really working right now and I am trying to tough out until Thursday. Uggg!!!

As for Skype. I am sure it will be available, maybe not at launch, but I bet soon.

I went through the entire last week PISSED at the fact it didn’t come out on Thursday. If Best Buy still has it in the ad…it SHOULD come out this week.. Hopefully. Do you understand how I’ve been PURPOSELY skipping Happy Hours, and eating off of the Dollar Menu… READY to pay Full Retail for this?

Omg, this is priceless. We are slaves to our devices, I feel ya pain. This site has become the 1st thing I check in the Am, and last thing before bed. I think my droidx is getting jealous and knows its days are numbered. Its been majorly acting up.

      • xArmedx

I agree with you, I have the original droid & it’s starting to act up lately. The droids know what’s gonna happen.

      • Greg

I gotta figure out a way to LAST until thursday without BLOWING all my ends.. cause I NEED this in my life.

If it doesn’t have skype what will it have? Will it support qik or some other type of video calling program?

    • Anonymous

You can use Tango, but it doesn’t interface with Skype, just other Tango users.

    • Dsgamecube

Qik works on the EVO, so it should work on the TB on or soon after launch.

  • Cmrudy

The phone I want is the Atrix, too bad its on AT&T only. Just give us the Thunderbolt to pacify us

  • nh

This is really pissing me off. If it was launching so soon why not say so.

Being the issues they knew full well were happening, why mention it was going to be sooner at all and keep it in march.

  • http://twitter.com/MoBounceMurray Amon Murray

I know this is of no relevance, but Simply Stunning 5.0 is a beast!!! And it runs like Gingerbread, built from source is what it said

  • Ggggg

My cousins sisters uncles brother knows this guy who heard from this girl who knows a guy who works for Verizon and he said the Thunderbolt will release on the 28th.

  • DroidzFX

gosh dang is this skype-life.com? Gee willie slap my a$$ call me sallie I thought this was Droid-life.com.

    I couldn’t resist

    • Mang

Or rather, Thunderbolt-Life. I’m embarrassed to say you may as well title that as my life…

  • ejreilly

My cousin who works for verizon told me the thunderbolt is coming out the 21st.

    • Anonymous

Would make sense, I’ve been seeing the thunderbolt commercial on TV today with the countdown starting at 3 seconds.

  • Droid V*rgin

Agreed….I’m ready to get my grubby little hands on the phone already! I’m a CrackBerry convert going to my first Android phone and have been patiently waiting (along with my $50 in BestBuy’s interest bearing account) for the release of this phone. I, for one, was really looking forward to the Skype feature…but I can wait until it’s fully functional in a later upgrade. So…does anyone have any insights on the below post saying the Thunderbolt is available?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

just release the phone already so we can start hearing some Bionic rumors!

  • John R Ruddick

Skype will probably be OTA later.

  • BTGGTR1

Just download Tango for video chat when you get the Thunderbolt. That’ll work.

  • Camney1

WHO CARES ABOUT SKYPE RIGHT NOW!?!? Give me the freakin’ phone and I’ll live with Oovoo, Tango and freakin’ Qik!

    • EvilMonkey

I dont need any of those. I think we can all wait a couple weeks to video chat. Im not even sure who they think we will be video chatting with considering barely anyone else has a front facing camera and skype

    • Worm4603

      doesn’t skype own qik now

  • NCX

ALSO the ThunderBolt being demoed with Skype, it wasn’t a real demo, it was a video they had running inside the app to show what the phone can do when its available, they even said at CES it wasn’t available yet so thats why they didn’t demo it for real.

    • Anonymous

The point is, that they chose the Thunderbolt to do that demo on.

      • NCX

thats true, but we can live without Skype until its ready :P Hopefully that means this coming week the launch is being announced for the 24th, tired of waiting, tired of the news, tired of seeing the pic on news blogs because each time i see it, its either about a delay, a missing feature or some other bad news…

      • Anonymous

It’s really not that big of a deal. If they release a buggy, less functional, crappy version that isn’t ready yet you all will be pissed too. Patience is a virtue.

  • Anonymous

does this mean the 2/24 date is back on? I hope so!

  • Jcoleman38

Eff skype …give me my phone

    • Anonymous

That’s what I’m saying. Just give us the phone already. :(

    • Anonymous

Yeah!!! Release this POS so we can stop hearing about it :|

  • Anonymous

Same for me not a big deal, not really a Skyper. You would think Moto and Skype would have this planeed out before even annoucing earlier that Thunderbolt would launch with Skype.

    • EvilMonkey

I dont think moto really cares if the thunderbolt has skype…

      • Anonymous

You know you’re right lol, Verizon :P

  • EvilMonkey

Why does the one below that say that the thunderbolt and the inspire are now available?

    • Worm4603

      yeah what does this mean

      • John R Ruddick

        second that….

        • Lilbballer38

That is basically phonescoop for bestbuymobile. Its saying that the thunderbolt and inspire are now available to be viewed. It gives info like specs and different things like phonescoop would.

          • EvilMonkey

well that sucks, I was hoping for something more exciting like “its available for sale only to customers who know the secret word:(insert secret word here)”

          • DBK

            EVIL MONKEY!

          • Droid V*rgin

Thanks! I knew that feeling of hope would be fleeting :-( Well….I just hope when they DO release it, that there are no problems with it. I’m worried that these “delays” point to that there might be issues with the phone. I think I’d rather keep waiting than be disappointed with the device and experience.

          • EvilMonkey

well luckily they seem to be making sure it will works perfectly on release. wouldnt want an antenna gate fiasco like some other phones had on release. we wont mention any names…

    • Jamerson90

It means that this was a best buy employee who snapped this pictures, as the HTC Insipre 4G and the Thunderbolt is available for pre-order

  • NCX

Isn’t this screencap contridicting the launch? lol I mean below it says that “HTC Thunderbolt available” yet i am hearing from BestBuy insiders that it was delayed that they have an ad correction set for next week’s ad… now i’m just confused even more… I could care less about Skype,

  • http://twitter.com/3DFigueroa Rodney Figueroa

Not a deal breaker as far as I’m concerned. Depends on how quick they plan to implement and get it done.
