Chart: Motorola XOOM vs. LG Optimus Pad vs. Samsung Tab 10.1 vs. HTC Flyer

Mobile World Congress introduced us to 3 brand spankin’ new Android tablets to battle it out with the Motorola XOOM for top dog in 2011.  We saw the LG Optimus Pad (G-Slate), the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and most recently, the HTC Flyer.  All of them look like incredible products that come off as being very similar, but once you dig down deep, you realize they all have tweaks here or there that make them slightly different.  The XOOM is the first and on Verizon’s 4G network, the LG is all about 3D,  the new Galaxy Tab is lightweight and stylish, and the Flyer took a different 7″ approach, but has a new Scribe technology.

Our comparison chart is after the break.

*Note 1* – The HTC Flyer will be upgraded to Honeycomb at some point, but it will launch with Gingerbread.
*Note 2* – Apologies for missing fields; we used what the companies have made available.
*Note 3* – XOOM release date is for the U.S.  All others are non-U.S. at this time.

I hope people have enough of a clue not to buy a device with a ‘planned’ upgrade to Honeycomb.

    • http://twitter.com/SciJohn SciJohn

I don’t care what the Flyer may have in the future.
If it works well now under the current OS with the SenseUI overlay, I am happy.
It’s got what I need now – a stylus input.

  • http://twitter.com/SciJohn SciJohn

The HTC Flyer has a stylus!
Finally, a tablet for handwritten note taking. – just what I need
I’ve been using various Windows tablets since they first came out.
The stylus is what makes them most useful.
The HTC Flyer is smaller and much lighter. It will fit in my cargo pants pocket.
“Early Q2″ can’t come fast enough.
and to think I almost pulled the trigger on a Xoom…

The Motorola XOOM wins by a landslide!

Okay, not a landslide, but that device is still better than all the rest!

    • Anonymous

Yea man,,it has a barometer..it must be better. Forget about the 1080p recording and less weight of the Samsung. NOT!

I’m surely not one. I think the iPad 2 will outsell all of these tablets combined..want to bet on it?

        • Anonymous

haha i don’t doubt it. I’m really not a fruit hater at all… if Apple would make a few changes, they’d have a great product. Not just the obvious stuff (that they’ll probably do) like front/back camera, expandable memory, etc, but changes to the UI…people like widgets, better notifications, and the whole one button thing drives me insane. My buddy has one and loves it, and with the exception of some of those shortcomings, I do to, but I’m hooked on Android; I love the competition among the manufacturers, and if only it would turn into basic economic competition, driving prices down for the consumer, life would be great!

Yeah, you’re a troll. Sales doesn’t mean squat for the consumer and no, it won’t outsell them all combined, just like the iPhone doesn’t outsell all android phones combined, not by a long shot.

          • Anonymous

you’re right! when buying a product one should never go by what sells best or has the highest ratings in customer satisfaction. Everyone should buy a product based on specs and which one has the highest number of cores and 20 GPU’s and shitty software!

          • Anonymous

well from your perspective, what makes Honeycomb shitty? And I’m not being a smartass – we’re all borderline android fanboys here… albeit fairly educated ones, but if somebody offered me an iPad with identical hardware specs for cheaper than a Xoom, I’d probably still turn it down because 3.0 looks sick, and I’m not huge on iOS… I’m legitimately curious what your thoughts are to put iOS over Honeycomb

          • DBK

Because his lord and master, *teve *obs, declared as much, therefore it must be so. /sarcasm

            Trolls will be trolls….

          • Anonymous

iOS – software updates! no bugs, not fragmented with skins etc, more efficient on battery life and devices with outstanding battery life, ease of use, easy to jailbreak if needed, a PLATFORM that is very well established, the devices that runs it will always be kickass aesthetically and hardware wise

those are my thoughts for choosing an iPad 2 over a Honeycomb tablet

          • Anonymous

I’m not seeing a lot of skins on Honeycomb so far and I like it that way… and it may be easy to use but I’d say almost to a fault… when your 4 yr old can figure it out that’s good for him but may be indicative of an overly simplified (and therefore less customizable) UI… I can see some of your points but to talk about how established iOS is vs android doesn’t make much sense – if people stuck with “well established” things we would never see advancements…

oh and your ipad may be sexy but have you looked at any of the Android tablets? Picking an iPad is like selecting the dried up whore with fake tits that you know will put out even if she does come with a few complementary STDs… those android tablets are like walking through an all girls catholic school with a minimum sexyness requirement…pick of the litter!

          • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

Honeycomb tablets dont have skins on so edumacate yourself before talking.. Xoom has 8 to 10 hrs same as a macbook…. Rooting is just as easy actually easier because its only one click…And lastly you have no idea what the ipad 2 will be or run so if you want to start speculating then go somehwere else

          • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

You are being a troll because this article has nothing to do with the ipad 2 once specs are out I am sure they will update the chart

          • Anonymous

You called it shitty software and ignore better hardware in favor of a logo, you’re a troll.

    • Anonymous

I agree hitter…HTC will most likely out sell them all. Well or Samsung…my money is on HTC as it is all about cost and not the internals to most of the consumers (not the 150 or less people on this forum).

I clicked the android tab that popped up after the video and they actually say its yours have at it about customizing. Me likey, now lets see how much.

  • scott

The xoom is like a supermodel to me. Never seen one and never gone get one.

    • Anonymous

haha I feel ya man. Im tryin to convince my parents to buy one for me as a graduation present before I head off to law school, but they arent having any of that $799 crap. I know $200 almost seems trivial when you consider that this should be a fairly long term investment (hardware looks solid and as up to date as possible, Google seems to have Honeycomb down pretty well, and being Google’s flagship tablet, the Xoom should get upgrades first)… but seriously, $599 just feels like a more reasonable price

  • Anonymous

I love how digital cameras get smaller and smaller and record HD video but someone is now going to walk around taking video holding their new 10″ tablet. That should be amusing. They just keep throw crap in so they can say my tablet does “this.” I’m holding out til one comes out with a gas grill built into it so I can cook cheeseburgs while I watch my 1080p 3D video…

    • Anonymous

You should pitch the grill idea to motorola… I could probably cook a burger on the underside of my damn dell laptop… piece of garbage…

I hear you about the practicality of recording video with a 10″ tablet when you could less obtrusively do it with a camera… at the same time, if carrying around a tablet (10″ is admittedly too large for most pockets, but that aside) becomes commonplace, the ability to record with it on the fly as opposed to carrying around a camera makes some sense… right? ha

  • @DMV11982

XOOM wins in all categories if you ask me! The Galaxy Tab shoots in 1080p and has an 8mp camera, but honestly, that is not a big deal to me! It does not have an SD slot or an HDMI port. Does it have a USB, I dont know. And please believe that it will be just as much if not more than the Xoom.

The LG tab sounds appealing, but 3D is a fad..not the future..and that sucker is going to be pricey as well! Supply and Demand people..these things are not going to be inexpensive!

It is Hello Moto for me! OG Droid, Droid X, and soon a Xooooom

            their own product?

i stand corrected, but i’ll run my mouth all i f*cking want to and their ain’t sh*t u can do about it. Also Motorola don’t know sh*t if they did they wouldn’t be selling it for a ridiculous price.

Having 3D on a tablet is a big waste of money. People barely want 3D TVs, why would they want 3D on their tablet? Samsung put too much money in the camera, with 1080p recording and then no HMDI to go along with it. Who in there right mind is going to record something with their tablet, when hey could just pull out their phone and record with the same specs. The big dog, and my tablet of choice is still the XOOM.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jetsaredim Jared Greenwald

I’m guessing that even with 3G/4G the 10.1 Tab is going to come in at a price under that of the XOOM. Shame, too.

    i love charts!!!

  • Raven

These things are HUGE compared to a phone. Throw in a full size SD card slot so that I can just stick in my digital camera’s sd card. Hell, throw in 2 slots. 1 for temporary use like a camera or document card and another one for the typical internal expansion memory.

The first Android tablet with at least dual cores and a full size SD slot will receive a win from me.

        • EC8CH

so much so it should have it’s own parade!

  • Anonymous

Please include some of the cheaper tablets (less than $400) in this comparison as well.

    • Anonymous

Except for the Viewsonic G-Tablet (and then only thanks to XDA), the Advent (non-US and again only thanks to XDA) and maybe the Notion Ink Adam, all of which are still questionable, what sub $400 tablet is worthy of the comparison?

      • Anonymous

The screen sucks on the G-Tablet, let’s get serious!

        • Anonymous

Yes, I agree. And that is really my point. The G-Tablet may be the best sub $400 Android device so far, but it is still fatally flawed (though it was worse when it had those awful viewing angles AND the Tap N Tap interface), so really (as the comment I replied to wanted) to stand those devices up against this batch just isn’t fair, or accurate. Spec wise, the G-tablet may look good, but in reality it can’t hold a candle to any of the devices listed in the chart on this post. So while everybody may be wishing for a $400 Xoom, if what they are going to get is a G-Tablet… is it worth it? I think not.

  • Anonymous

2 Qualify as an automatic “NFW” from me. The Galaxy Tab (or any Samsung product until they stop treating these items like a cheap VCR that they can sell and forget) and the HTC Flyer… Sense? On a Tablet? That thing is NEVER gonna see Honeycomb.

  • http://www.youtube.com/billtvshow Billtvshow

I’m still interested in seeing more about that Toshiba tablet, it had pretty solid specs as well.

  • Vitodintino

Damn, all of these tablets have different things that all look appealing, pros and cons from each company in different categories, makes it tough to choose. Motorola Xoom has a nice setup in terms of physical connections, HDMI and USB are useful. Than you have the Samsung tablet that looks awesome, 1080p recording is sweet too. But boom, no HDMI out. And for the LG… eh.. the size doesn’t appeal to me, honestly, neither does this whole 3D fad.

    • Anonymous

Not going to lie, I hate 3D, but that G-Slate looks pretty appealing.

It wins in the screen size category, for me (I’ve used the Archos A70 and the iPad; 7″ is much nicer for a tablet). Since it sucks almost everywhere else, no thanks.

      And the waiting game continues.

      • Tesseract 3

I guess you are right about that. But yeah it does such pretty much everywhere else. I would have to be really impressed to buy a tablet, over say… a laptop, considering the price comparisons. So yeah, still waiting.

So you don’t care about the quality of the product you buy? just the price? Go buy a pencil. Its cheap, it can write, and you can mail letters to people via the post office. Oh, you can also draw…

Kellex, thanks for these. I think im going to wait for the samsung options (wifi or not) now. If they provide a wifi only option, thats prob gonna be my purchase.

      • http://twitter.com/richardsonadm Adam Richardson

Seriously? How many times have you gone over the comparisons. Yes, I do care about the quality of the product and Xoom is my favorite, but for the most part they are some what similar. And yes, I do believe price is a huge factor in comparison to these charts. We’ve know about these tablets for awhile now and price is what we need to know now. Don’t give me this crap you just wrote down.

        • Anonymous

Man they just announced the Samsung and HTC tablets… it makes sense to see some comparison at least once…

It also makes sense to look at the manufacturer and it’s track record in terms of upgrades and the like… I truly like HTC, and HTC Sense on phones, but they’re gonna have to make a spectacular version of the UI to go over Honeycomb for me to consider that – it seems that Google’s got stock Honeycomb down pretty well as is, don’t mess with a good thing, and in turn prevent timely updates

          • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

sense on a tablet is a fail.. Everything they announced today is not looking good at all FAil

          • Anonymous

Yeah. I hear ya… I almost don’t mind Sense on Gingerbread (which the HTC
Tablet is running) makes sense… actually looks good. But Honeycomb doesn’t
need it, and no Android tablet of any worth should be without Honeycomb!

      • Brandonv Gillis

So…. that chart tells you about the quality of the product……

        Good luck with that.

    • Brandonv Gillis

I agree with this completely. I don’t need a chart to tell me the quality of the product I am going to buy.

Quality breakdown (it has been this way forever):

Motorola: Good hardware, locked down software
LG: Crappy hardware will cause the device to be slower than it should be and cause a bad experience
      HTC: Good hardware, open software
Samsung: okay hardware, will probably be slower than it should be, causing a bad experience

What I really care about is PRICE.

      • http://twitter.com/binglut9 Brian

HTC: Good hardware, open software?? really they just put out a tablet and put sense on it doesnt even have honeycomb that is a fail

I think you should have put N/A for the XOOM’s price as well. In this case, N/A = Not Acceptable.

Regardless, it’s nice to see an Army of Android tablets set to take on the iPhad. My only worry, is that the Fruit Factory has the Wi-Fi only and distribution channels mastered. Note to Android Tablet manufacturers: the first one of you to break free from the wireless carriers wins.

Yeah the wifi-only models would have made this much more interesting, but they love carriers and money too much.

The one video of the wi-fi model you guys posted: 1. Is that a smaller version? and 2. Was the guy correct in saying that there was a SIM slot, or did he mean a memory slot… It would be interesting to have the option of buying a wifi-only model with the opportunity to then sign into a 4G data contract…

        • Anonymous

sorry but re-read what you wrote about your 2nd question, that makes no sense at all. if thats what your looking for then buy one off contract, and use it as wifi only and sign up afterwards which also kind of makes no sense but ok. if its a WIFI only model its going to be WIFI only. Just pointing it out not trying to be a smartass or nothing.

          • Anonymous

No Man, I hear ya… One of the videos I saw about the wifi only model, the dude talking about it insisted that there was a SIM slot in the unit… which doesn’t make much sense to me… unless it does not have a 3G radio, but does offer expansion for 4G. I personally wouldn’t mind that option… buy it off contract, use it as a wifi only, and if Verizon’s 4g prices are reasonable, and the coverage is badass, then consider getting a plan and using 4G only…
