BREAKING: DROID X2, DROID 3 and Incredible 2 All in the Works, Stock Experience Coming

Last week, after Verizon announced a partnership with Apple, we asked the question, “Is the DROID brand done for?”  And while most of you were on-board with the fact that this line of phones is just getting its feet wet, especially with the DROID BIONIC on the way, we were worried about the lack of other potential DROID branded phones since the tag has seemingly been pulled from the XOOM.  And then this week we heard other news from more than one source.

In 2011, we can expect updated versions of the entire DROID lineup.  Yep, we’ll see a DROID X2, DROID 3 and Incredible 2.  At this time we don’t have details or specs for any of  them, but do know that they are appearing on internal Verizon timelines and could be out sooner than you may be imagining.  I’m doubting that they’ll be 4G devices since Verizon already has four beasts in the works, plus you have to remember that not everyone will have 4G service until 2013, but that won’t hold them back from being great.

And to add to that news, we are under the impression that at least one of them will be a stock Android device.  Murmurs of such things have been spreading around the interwebs over the last few weeks, but the acknowledgement from Motorola yesterday that they are willing to work with developers, plus this tweet (Cheers Matt!) from a certain industry friend, leads us to believe that there is still hope.  We should also point out that this topic over at Moto’s Get Satisfaction page (Cheers Geran!) which refers to unlocking the DROID X’s bootloader has been flagged as “implemented” by the company.

Update:  A few users have suggested timelines for the release of these devices and if we base them off of last year, it could look similar to this:

  • DROID Incredible 2 – April/May
  • DROID X2 – July
  • DROID 3 – August

Is that enough good news for the week?  Time to start speculating on the upgraded specs we’ll see with these new family members.  And I’m officially having a great day.

This isn’t implemented already. I am not sure how the status got changed to that status. It was likely a mistake caused by some of the automation of this web solution. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I liked only because we need to get this out there, moto=verizon=stupid as of late

I got the DX the day it came out, can’t wait to see what’s new by the time I can upgrade. I might need to wait until 20 months after october though, cuz of my dad :/ gonna be some amazing stuff out by then though.

  • Anonymous

He’d be grandfathered in. New and renewing users don’t get NE2’s but those of us with em keep em til we use em. After that it’s a 20 month upgrade policy.

I knew this would happen. Contract ends, waiting for tegra 2 & 4g(pricing b/c I’m in a 4g market) and now a possible Droid 3. I might just get this b/c I wanted the OG Droid so bad but was in a contract. What to do?

I’m interested as to where this will end up. Will Moto stop being hard headed and give into customer demands? Everyone should click on this link and vote so Moto sees how important it is to us (its the same link from the above article)! http://getsatisfaction.com/motorola/topics/please_unlock_the_droid_x_bootloader

Sweet, so looking forward to the DroidX2 if the specs are superior to the BIONIC….locked bootloader or not, those devices have proved to be successful….and have so much more support than the samsung products.

  • Anonymous

I feel like there is a great chance these could be 4g devices. We just wont see them for a while

Cant wait for the Droid X7 Phenom. it will come with a built in paintball gun.

    • Anonymous

Paintball guns are so archaic, it will obviously come with a raygun, duh :-P

pshhh are you crazy?? Plasma cannons are where it’s at!

  • Niemeyer2010

I am so excited! I can’t believe they are making these…My DROID X just leaked some acid;) I may jump over to the DROID 3 because I almost wanna switch to a physical keyboard… A DROID X with a physical keyboard? That’d be awesome… My contract isnt up until February 2012… But im just gonna steal my dad’s contract.

  • TinyToonAdventures

As a Droid X owner, I’m so hoping the Droid X2 will match or exceed the Atrix 4G! I would switch in a heart beat and pay full price if need be.

    Droid X2 = Bionic
    Incredible 2 = Thunderbolt

    • DBK

      Thunderbolt = EVO

      Bionic = Atrix

Surprised you didn’t realize that before making your comment.

those phones arent even for verizon smart ass

        • DBK

Which is why we got the Thunderbolt and the Bionic. Verizon versions of non-Verizon phones. Now who’s being the smart-ass?

  • droid2ex

it would be a rip off they didn’t make them 4G devices…but the stock experience is welcome, hoping its the droid 3… the 4g lineup needs a physical keyboarded droid.

  • Porno

I’m holding out for the Droid Bionic X2 – it doubles as a fighter jet.

  • El_R

well… so much for my plans to get a thunderbolt. I have 2 lines but only want 1 4G phone, so it looks like waiting for the inc. 2 for me… which i guess given the predicted timeline maybe it won’t be so bad.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Emaw-Kennedy/504157652 Michael Emaw Kennedy

I’m planning on getting which ever one has stock! unless its the incredible! This is the best news in days!

  • Raven

Well, I just upgraded to a Droid 2 Global a couple of weeks ago so it will be 20 months before I can get a shiny new Droid 3, but here’s hoping they will have all of the bugs worked out by then.
Droid w/ Physical Keyboard 4 Life!

    • DBK

Unless you qualify for the early upgrade (since you did upgrade before the 16th, you should be able to get that one more time). :)

  • robbyp30

    Droid 3 in 2011, Droid 4G in 2012?

  • Vire

Awesome, so we have two brand-spanking new bootloaders to deal with from Motorola.

    lolwut?

    • Vire

Sorry for being cynical and all here, but I won’t acknowledge that they’ve gotten with the program until I actually see some hardware action from them.

      • DBK

If one of them is going to be vanilla Android (supposedly), then methinks they may have finally gotten the point.

The G2 has stock android and is still locked

  • Silksmooth12

Moto reminds me of Biff Tannen. He’s too dumb to do his own homework (OS) so he gets Marty McFly (Google) to do the homework for him (Android.) But Biff is so stupid that instead of just copying it in his own handwriting and turning it in (stock Android) and getting an easy A (positive consumer/critical response) he decides to start changing the answers (Blur) and is doomed to an F (consumer/critical backlash.)

Great work Moto. You are now the Biff Tannen of tech.

    • lonndoggie

      Brilliant!

    • Ace

tech don’t you mean George Mcfly, being Biff was from 1955 and had Marty’s Dad George do his homework for him cuz the old George was a wimp.

droid 3. full keyboard, i mean full, with a row dedicated to numbers not some shift/alt crap, 1.2 ghz dual core, 1 gig ram, 16gb on board with support for xcsd cards, fwd cam, focusable video capability, stock android 2.3 or 3.0 and a 4 inch screen. that would be the only way to cal a phone the droid 3, and i would buy it. oh yea, and moto should pick up some of the best cheap useful aps and make them stock. mototorch, lookout, visualizer, circle launcher, beautiful widgets, you know, the really good aps that deserve to be stock features.

    • Raven

I would agree, except for the bigger screen. They can increase the resolution all they want, but please do not make the Droid 3 any bigger.

    • DBK

Agreed with Raven. I like my D2’s size. Just give it bionic-like hardware, and more usable keyboard, vanilla Android (Gingerbread, since I doubt Honeycomb will be on these), and a decent battery. Instant god. :P

You should send that off to Moto. :]

Damn, just when I was struggling with my decsion on the The Bionic vs the The Thunderbolt. Now this great news. can someone explain to me what “stock android device” specifically means?

    • Anonymous

AOSP. The way Google releases it to the manufacturers, before they add their bullshit on top of it.

      NO BLUR!

    • Anonymous

“Stock” means the version of Android produced by Google, without ANY OEM modifications. Remember the UI from the original Droid? That’s stock. Now see the UI on the Droid X — all red and black and stuff, and often with altered core apps (Contacts, camera, etc.)? That’s Motorola’s proprietary interface, called Motoblur (or just Blur), thus making it “not stock.”

This didn’t matter for a lot of us, because many phones can be rooted, after which you can just install stock Android (or whatever other variant you want) instead. However, with the recent outbreak of locked bootloaders (especially in Moto devices), this is no longer as much of an option, thus making the stock, Google-to-the-core devices that much more valuable.

  • Eric

A DInc 2 would be awesome that way i won’t feel bad about replacing my 1st.

  • Rocktoonz

This is extremely interesting as a DInc owner, since the now non-Droid labeled Thunderbolt was originally being touted as the Incredible 2. I’m happy to see that there will indeed be a Droid sequel to my awesome DInc!

    • Romma1

Hopefully the Dinc2 will have the same dimensions, sleekness and weight as the ODinc..

    • Anonymous

I m probably not going to wait and take my chances on a stock Motorola phone. I don’t trust them.

The Thunderbolt will be out soon with an unlocked bootloader!

  • DBK

A 3G, vanilla Android, blood red Droid 3 with an ergonomic keyboard and Bionic-like specs. Make it so.

    • Anonymous

      I’d say keep it black.

      • DBK

Techniacally it’s black and dark blue for the OG Droid 2, black and R2-D2 for the Droid R2-D2, and black and dark blue/black and white for the Global. I would like to see a black and blood red. I think that would look badass.

        • Sebas310

Like a darker Incredible color scheme?

    • Anonymous

      I’d say keep it black.

      Yes, The Droid Conan.

Of course they will be 4G, are you kidding me? At this point, what smartphone manufacturer would put something out for Verizon that wasn’t LTE-capable (other than Apple of course), other than maybe a low-end smartphone or two?

    • Romma1

kellex even made reference in one of the prior articles that at some point, all future androids would be 4G capable. This seemed like inside source info from the context of the statement at the time.

  • Anonymous

Isnt the thunderbolt the incredibles successor?

    • DBK

No, it’s Verizon’s version of the EVO.

  • DroidzFX

  • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Droid Xtreme would be a good name for the Droid X2, or some variation of that. But still…unless they make drastic changes, like make the Droid Xtreme a duel core phone, 1gb RAM, and have a front facing camera, etc, I may still be inclined to buy the Droid Bionic early next year(when I’m up for an upgrade).

    Still pretty awesome news though.

  • http://twitter.com/JasonAGrier Jason A. Grier

Man… well guess I’ll wait around until the Bionic comes around… I know if the Droid 3 comes out w/ physical keyboard and has same specs as the Bionic (minus 4G) I’ll be ticked haha… well I guess I should just say I wouldn’t be surprised, but it’d stink!

In slightly related news, I understand that Moto is considering a StarTAC powered by Android. Maybe they’ll call it the Droid StarTAC 532,124.

This is an apparent response to the new Sidekick… (I’m kidding, of course)

    • Anonymous

The StarTac was a kick ass phone!!

      • Romma1

I was so jealous of my coworkers Startac. That was the coolest phone out there for a long time.

I’d bet the Droid 3 for August. That would be 20 months after the release of the original, just in time for early adopters to upgrade.

    • Anonymous

Earlier than that perhaps. I bought the original the day it became available, and according My Account info, my eligibility kicks in July 7, 2011.

      • Nathanbull33

Same for me here! Bought it as soon as it came out and I’m eligible for upgrade in July as well :)

    • LightningSquirl

That is exactly what I was thinking! I’ve had my OG Droid since the beginning of time.

My upgrade is in August… so I wonder which phone I will be upgrading to?

      • Waknatious

I’m OG Droid and my upgrade is June.
        ?

        • JohnV

          mine’s July… hooray for inconsistency!

        • Mykz26

I’m OG Droid launch day Nov 09 and my upgrade is July 6. Although I did just recently break my phone, and have no insurance and Verizon customer service (not retail store) offered to force my upgrade but I declined to wait for new Droids. I’m guessing July/August on Droid 3.

    • http://twitter.com/sschaper41 Steve Schaper

What upgrade? Verizon killed the upgrade program. No more new every 2.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1603800094 Cody Clay

that doesnt mean you cant upgrade anymore. that would be stupid.

        • tjhrulz

Well they did got rid of NE2, so I wouldn’t rule anything out because it would be a stupid idea.

          • Viper76269

they’re trying to just get everyone down to 1 year contracts.

      • http://www.facebook.com/twpayne Wil Payne

Pretty sure the NE2 removal only applies for contracts after January 16, 2011. Otherwise, wouldn’t Verizon be breaching the contracts that were signed previously?

      • Viper76269

NE2 applies to the discount, as in the $100 off. They stll have an upgrade after 20 months, but you don’t get the NE2 discount.

      • JohnV

you get one more upgrade… you just won’t get another

You know you have nothing to complain about when you start complaining about names.

      • tbaybe

        im not complaining…. just making a statement…

        • GarryMaput

I think they’re more interested in name/brand recognition. Everyone knows what a Droid X is, so it figures they’ll understand easily that the Droid X2 means an updated, read better, version. Same with the Droid, Droid 2, Droid 3, and Droid Incredible, Droid Incredible 2. Granted, it’s not the most original of approaches, but if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

          • DBK

      Droid 3 – November
