Wednesday Poll: Is the DROID Brand Done for?

With yesterday’s announcement that the i*hone is on the way, all anyone can think about is how it will affect the DROID brand and Verizon’s Android lineup in general.  Will the DROID BIONIC be the last in a line of incredibly successful devices?  I sort of doubt that.  Will we see a lot less “DROID” branded devices than we saw last year?  I can almost guarantee that.  With the name as established as it is, there isn’t a need for every single Moto device that lands on Verizon to fall under the category that has helped drive Android to insane heights.  We should now look for the best of the best which is why the BIONIC is the only one we are currently expecting in the first half of 2011.  The DROID brand is far from dead, we just won’t be seeing new family member every other month like we did in 2010.  And thank god.

So what do you think?  Will it die off after the BIONIC?  Do we have years left?  Months?  Do you want it to continue on?

No poll needed, just drop your feelings on the future of the DROID brand below.

I don’t really care about the branding. I just want an awesome phone.

  • Apples234

droid is dead, jk but i might retire my og d1 for the iphone

  • Flashoveride

We will see The droid 3,4, & Y,Z with a few specials in between. Just look at the moto razor history.

  • Beeze82

I’m sure droid will be around for along time but like everything it goes out of style and I*hone started in 07 and since they added 3g, camera flash, and now you can change the wall paper wooo. If you ask me i*hone will start looking like bell bottoms soon and droid or android will get bigger and badder!!!!!

Which would you rather try killing, an apple or a robot?…

When the locked down MotoBLUR laden DROID 2 and DROID X were released the DROID brand stopped meaning anything.

I hope they take it back to the drawing board and really analyze what they want the brand to mean. But I don’t see the DROID brand going away, it has incredible mindshare

  • Lukequeen

I want an awesome keyboard. Droid is not listening. Samsung and LG are listening. If Droid is to survive, they must get a kick-butt keyboard…..enough said….Luke Q.

  • Z|NEAka

i love my droid..that’s it. short and simple. simple and plain.

i will end up purchasing a BIONIC, ive almost forgotten i had a computer, except to turn it on for usb capabilities, in DEBUG mode.
who was that one guy, “just set it and … “, i love it.

one person on our plan has a upgrade coming up, ill play with her new BIONIC and play with my fifth child, |X|

  • Olonajoseph

Sorry you can’t fade the droid….I’m not saying the i phone is bad,, its a great phone but come on Droid is just bad to the bone….And you know it is….

iphone and android will always exist but whether or not the “Droid” line will continue with verizon is anyone’s guess

i say it will continue but it wont be advertised as much now that the iphone is out on verizon

  • Brighterside11

    LOL DROID DIE?

You’re joking. If anything, he DROID brand has just begun.

  • Anonymous

Only if everyone decides to ditch customization and freedom for a locked down phone with a shiny fruit on the back.

  • Jdhtechboston

i dont like the iphone the droid to me is faster. i cant wait till the bionic comes out i just want to know the release date so i can up grade

  • Rousellbrandon

After having d1,dinc,and now D2g. Im jumping ship unless ship unless I can get a vanilla. O.s . Its ether iphone5 or vanilla android. And not leaving VZW to get vanilla android.

  • xyzlene

i think the droid brand is done for, android in general. open source is great, but it allows such apps as bing to be installed – bloatware and all that. Iphone seals the deal in my opinion.

i still have the original moto droid, and i do not see myself ditching this phone anytime soon. EVERYTHING works!

why i think android will fail.

samusung has disappointed many people one way or another.

Droid X was the next messiah. how are those ringtones and speakerphone out of the box – that’s what i figured!

nexus s 2 is already in the works. that sucks for nexus s owners.

what about support for the n1 community?

    moto has blur

other phones have bloat which slows down updates.

we have all rooted our phones to optimize their potential, as they should have been out of the box.

i think a lot of people are fed up with having to root to get their phone to work as desired.

all i want is a plain android phone that does not reboot while making calls. a working gps. gorilla glass. good hardware/software that should last at least a year. i would pay for updates at this point of time.

no desire for iphone unless google gps was available. that will never happen.

Tired of rooting – i think android was at its best between the moto droid and nexus one.

i will use my moto droid until it becomes obsolete. hopefully something worthy will come out in the future.

Of course android has it’s flaws but those will be fixed. Many companies feel that way too. I mean, did you see all of the android devices at CES? They must think that the OS is going somewhere and getting there rapidly.

      • xyzlene

because android is a free OS platform. FREE. no restrictions. that’s why fragmentation is present and all crap ware. it is a double edged sword.

If i were a fortune 500 company and i could get a legal OS for free and mod it all i want – of course i would use it. If Andy Rubin or Eric Schmidt decided to charge for android – it would be a heck of a lot different!

Yes, there will be ppl who switch to this long awaited device. But, if Moto and Htc keep producing stellar Android phones. The interest will continue and customers will come back.

  • chistian

well i have a droid and my dad got an email from verizon showing him the iphone and hes getting it for me not sure to tell him i rather a android.

  • Sluggo97

My wife and son both have the 3GS iPhone; they constantly complain about
The dropped calls( when they have enough bars to make a call)also about
How even with the updates the phones
still suck. Their contract w at&t ends in
March and they are counting the days until they can jump ship and come over
To Big Red and Droid; No iPhone for them.

  • Rafier2000

iPhone what… All the people at my work check or should I say chucked them for the DROID 1 after I showed them mine. They never looked back and have no regrets.

  • nick

I believe that Verizon won’t waste anymore money on the droid name licensing and given a few years, android will simply be a feature phone operating system. It’s no where near the quality, stability and reliability as the iPhone and will all the crap google has been pulling about taking away H.264 and announcing a half-baked OS (2.3/3.0 with talks of 2.4 after 3.0…) every few weeks, the future of android is grim.

(PS. I’m not an iPhone fanboy, I currently use the Droid but will be first in line to get the new Verizon iPhone!)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sam-Kessler/100000783393011 Sam Kessler

lets facts the facts there will always be an iphone and it will always will be a huge success. But the fate of android is yet to be determined. right now android looks to be successful, and the fan base is growing but its permanent success is yet ti be determined. both android and ios are great operating systems and that is a fact.

  • Rivera939

My friend had said to me earlier that the only way he would get the Verizon iphone is if the iphone has the app store and the droid market combined lol could and would that ever be a possibility lol. Who knows n e thing is possible nowadays.

  • Dgid

No reasonable person will switch to the i*hone it would just be completely ridiculous on there part, android provides every option possible while on the I*hone you get to pick where your apps go “yayy….”
The Droid brand and android will be around as long as reasonable people keep supporting it and ignoring the icrap

I think the motorola atrix is what’s going to kill the droid family.

I mean here is the scenario.

Person wants to buy a new phone.
Lets see whats available oooh droid bionic so nice. what else, Motorola Atrix.
    Oooh motorola atrix.

Then he goes and buys the motorola atrix.

The only thing the robotic has over the atrix is Verizon.

Also I am 100% sure verizon was going to get the atrix and at&t was getting the robotic but Motorola found out about the i*hone and they switched the phones up also, Verizon has shot themselves in there own foot with the i*hone. I mean the atrix is going to be a crazy seller.

This officially ends the ties between motorola and verizon.

The Verizon i*hone doesn’t change anything to me. I am still going to recommend Android and some of the superior hardware out there. IMHO, the CES announcements took Android which already had better technical specs and hardware, to heights so far above the i*hone that there is just no way you can ignore it! The i*hone and its icon app launcher of a home screen is so 2007 that I can’t believe there are some people that still actually want it. My kids all talk about how other kids on the bus are bragging they have Droids like the “X”…not about anyone getting an i*hone. The i*hone is losing its cool factor.

I have a droid by moto right now i love this phone best one i have ever had. and ihones seem to have tons of problems. so i wont even consider even looking at another phone other then a droid till there are on a later version of the ihone.

i will admit ill check it out. because they do have some apps on them you cant get on a droid for certain websites i use. but as it looks in a comparison im stickin on the droid side.

I just love Apple products and I really wanted an iPhone a few years ago. But I will NEVER use AT$T for anything….so I recently got rid of my cursed Blackberry and got a Droid Incredible and I am in love with it. I also have an iTouch and although a few games on it are ok, I really like the Incredible features much more. Especially the sound for music and calls. I understand that the coming Droid phones will have 5.1 sound so I am eagerly looking to the Incredible HD around Q2. The iPhone lost a lot of people by staying locked to the worst company ever.

  • KJB

Hopefully AT&T starts pushing Android more now that they have to compete and try and keep/attract new customers…hence the Atrix which i would consider even switching to AT&T for. But VZW isnt going to push Android or Droid by extention all that much and I wouldnt e suprised if the “average” Original Droid user does switch to the iphone in mass since they dont understand the Android advantages and instead just want the iphone because they heard it was the best! VZW will burn maybe a quarter of advertising money toward Droid that they did last year.

    No DROID IS IMORTAL

  • Tenesejedd

I would like to see the Droid branding live on, but should really only be used for flagship devices. Moto came out with some great devices in 2010, but I think the Droid name was used too much and diluted it’s image and exclusivity to some degree.

I’ll be honest; I plan to get the new iPhone this summer. I got my Droid X on launch day, and I want to use my 1 year upgrade to get the iPhone 5. Don’t get me wrong, the X has been the best phone I’ve ever owned without a doubt. I started off loving Android and the community. Over the months I’ve started to grow weary of managing my phone like a computer. I’ve discovered that I don’t want limitless options and tweaks on my smartphone. It seems like every time I actually need to do something productive on the go, my X either drops 3G or I can’t seem to pin down text input in a browser. Many small annoyances like these have made me miss the guilt-free ease of use the iPhone offers. I’ll be keeping my X as a secondary phone.

Thanks to contracts the droid brand will have at least a few more years to last. Remember Droids have been the most innovative with changing designs (Droid 2 Keyboard) to introducing new hardware Droid Bionic with dual core. Droids just keep improving and to have a iphone crush it will hurt especially the droid community. But remember android users are cooler.

((((((TO MANY COMMENTS TO READ)))))) aaaaahhhhhhh…..MY head….

I’m just going to jump right in.

I think the Droid Branding has Served its purpose…Plus with Big Red Now carrying the IPhone the Droid ads are kind of useless. I mean the whole Droid campaign was to show that Verizon androids are better the the IPhone. I will have to give Verizon credit tho, if it wasn’t for all the Droid ads the would be 1/3 less android users out there.

  • MikeSlim

Couldn’t put it more perfectly..fuck the iphone imo.. People who buy androids and people who but iphone are two different types of people. Someone who just wants things done for them and doesn’t care about customization and lacks the technological mindset should but an iphone. Someone who wants there own personal phone unlike anyone elses and wants more innovation and customization should buy a droid. Since having my droid x I became much more intelligent. I learned about things I never known before and I spent hours on these forums looking for ways to make my phone more advanced… Ull never see me buy an iphone ever again!!
Running droid x apex 1.3.1 revolutionBLU theme clocked at 1.25 extremely stable 14 hrs barry life. Beat that mr. jobs haha

  • Chris Nimon

Droid is going somewhere,UP. Putting *phone on Verizon kinda reminds me of the shootouts between cowboys and indians. The bow and arrow was a huge stepping stone in the history of weapons but isn’t really comparable to guns anymore.

  • Bruce77064

There will always be those mindless people that will simply choose the iblone because they think it is sexy, never mind what the other phones out there can do, it is the weak minded that this seems to work the best on, kinda like “The Force”

  • Kornfag11

Just for fun, go and check out some different iphone forums. A lot of posts are up that talk about jailbreaking and running android os. Its rather amusing really. Now how many android users root there phone to run ios4?

  • Gerald Levine

What does the IPhone being released have a effect on the Droid? If anything it will show more interest. The Droid is just as popular as the IPhone.

  • Yankee04

I’d have to agree..who in their right mind is going to leave the real “open” system to go over to the ipoop for Jobs interpretation of what open is..that an the ipoop won’t b 4g capable, an youll still have to jail break it to use the facetalk outta wifi..No thanks I’ll stick w my rooted X running extreme orange apex at 1.2ghZ FLAWLESSLY until my contact runs out, or a bad ass piece of droid comez out!

Does anyone seriously think that Verizon has not been working on this deal while still advertising the Droid smart-phone line? Verizon will hedge their bets to attract the largest demographic of subscribers. They will carry the WP7 as soon as they can, as long as they see demand. If the i-product or any other product manages to change that Droid demand, then things will seriously change at VZW. There was only 1 VZW commercial for the i-Fad , that I am aware of. Samsung ran their own adds for the G-Tab. I suspect that Motorola , LG and HTC will do the same, again.

  • Infernox51

The DROID line needs another DROID. Aka – No Blur, SenseUI, or otherwise. Best case scenario would for the next Nexus device to be on VZW.

  • Destin246

Love my droid 2 and will stay an android user iphpne suxs!!

  • Joe Smith

Why not? I mean you can dual-boot the i*hone with Android 2.3. Why not have the best of both worlds? Verizon’s line-up of Android phones to be released this year is depressing if the Bionic is really only going to have 512mb RAM and it’s going to be the only dual-core phone released (official as of now anyway). If they could make it 1gig, in a heartbeat I would grab it. But with the i*hone 5 on the way, who cares about the 4. Whatever the case… It seems to me that Verizon is almost always one step behind AT&T. When the i*hone came out, AT&T jumped right on it. How long did it take Verizon to catch up? 4-5 years? Now that dual-core and Android has come out, what did Verizon do, nothing!!!!! AT&T has 2 awesome dual-core phones coming out each with 1gig of ram while Verizon’s Bionic was equipped with 2009 technology. I guess they figured they’ve got the best network so it doesn’t matter if they’re up to date on technology advances. *Sigh* You are awesome at disappointment Big Red.
