Android 2.3 Officially Announced in Video!

We’re too damn excited to even write up much of a post.  Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is now official, the SDK is out and this sweet video has been released that talks about all of the technical goodies involved.  Watch it now!

UPDATENexus S just announced!  Info over at Android Life.

UPDATE 2:  The 2.3 SDK is also live…

New APIs and technologies include:

Enhancements for game development: To improve overall responsiveness, we’ve added a new concurrent garbage collector and optimized the platform’s overall event handling. We’ve also given developers native access to more parts of the system by exposing a broad set of native APIs. From native code, applications can now access input and sensor events, EGL/OpenGL ES, OpenSL ES, and assets, as well a new framework for managing lifecycle and windows. For precise motion processing, developers can use several new sensor types, including gyroscope.

Rich multimedia: To provide a great multimedia environment for games and other applications, we’ve added support for the new video formats VP8 and WebM, as well as support for AAC and AMR-wideband encoding. The platform also provides new audio effects such as reverb, equalization, headphone virtualization, and bass boost.

New forms of communication: The platform now includes support for front-facing camera, SIP/VOIP, and Near Field Communications (NFC), to let developers include new capabilities in their applications.

More on the SDK here.

Update 3:  Nexus S announced.  Available for $529 unlocked with no contract or $199 on 2-year contract with T-Mobile.  Can purchase on December 16th at Best Buy and bestbuy.com.  Google phone gallery page is also live with info.

Update 4: Nexus S official specs.

Highlights in the video:

  • Gaming
  • Gyroscope
  • Multimedia
  • New forms of communication (video chatting)

When I read this, I was so excited I jumped up and yelled gingerbread….while I was in class….

Gotta say I'm kinda disappointed with this, theres nothing that stands out with this, the new UI isnt gonna mean anything when moto gets a hold of it and ruins it, and it really isnt gonna mean anything when HTC gets a hold of theres.

alot of this stuff you can find on ROMs.

I dont really care about the games eather, didnt really think games are a big enough thing that would call for a update that focuses on just that.

I dunno about you guys but, I dont know anyone who would use video chatting.

like richlizard24 said they are on 2.3 and the droid x isnt even on 2.2.1.

moto, dont even bother with the 2.2.1 anymore cause by the time you finally get 2.3, android will be on Android 5.0.

Boy do I hope they revamp the crappy POP email client soon. I wonder why they even included it, it's missing so many core features like signature on replies, clear deleted items, moving out of delete items. Ugh.

  • FUSIBLE

Where's the inline spell checker. All other phones have it why not android.

  • Ryan

Excuse the ignorance, but will an unlocked Nexus S work on Verizon?

I would also like to know

  • Nygiants9256

  • http://twitter.com/EvanTheGamer EvanTheGamer

Wow…this is some great and very exciting stuff.

I can't wait until they announce the release day for this bad boy. It was only yesterday when they announced/released Froyo 2.2 to phones everywhere. And now they finally announce Gingerbread!

This is exciting times, indeed. Can't wait to hear what's next!

  • richlizard24

2.3 is here and the Droid X still doesn't have 2.2.1. Thanks Moto.

  • PyroHoltz

I'm looking forward to the integrated VoIP stack for WiFi.

  • InvaderDJ

I am slightly underwhelmed but we don't have the big story besides what Google has decided to point out. If Gingerbread has GPU acceleration and some useful bug fixes/small features (ie better Exchange support, ad hoc Wi-Fi support, better DRM for companies like Hulu and Netflix to allow their video on it (I feel dirty even typing that I want “better” DRM), and better battery life) I will be happy.

Definitely nabbing that Nexus S especially if it can be unlocked for at&t 3G support like the earlier Vibrants.

  • Drew_VA

Yessss! Now I need some Gingerbread ROMy goodness. Cynogen i'm assuming will have it first, but can't wait to see a Shadowrom with 2.3…

  • sholtkamp

will the nexus S be available on other carriers besides T-mobile..?

  • sholtkamp

will the nexus S be available on other carriers besides T-mobile..?

  • Rain_king46

I was kinda hoping that Moto would fix their issues with Froyo before Gingerbread was released. Apparently not.

    • briderx

Which issues exactly? (I know there are a few.. Just wondering the particulars)

  • http://twitter.com/hpizzy Hiral Patel

Great another 3 months before we get it updated.

  • Timoh

Someone tell Motorola this happened, maybe we can get it in the next 6 months.

    Cool beans

  • Toonz

    blindtype ???

  • Coaster36

Kellex you have to promise us you'll announce the first rom to use the 2.3 apk. K thanks bye

  • sc4fpse

That one guy's accent… aaaarrrrgh. I almost turned off the video because of it. :( I think it's great that they're making these videos with the people who actually worked on these things, but man… sometimes you need to sacrifice that nice touch for people who are a little bit more presentable for media.

    Very interesting additions though. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/ewhitaker Eric Whitaker

Hurry up Rom Devs, I can't wait for 2.3.

  • http://twitter.com/tittlemanscrest Stephen Parker

    Release date??

  • Michael_NM

Yipee! Now we can “officially” begin waiting… I hope that Gingerbread isn't stale by the time we get it.

  • durangojim

I want the software guy to say “Does your dog bite?” and look around for the Pink Panther

  • Higher_Ground

Hooray! Now who wants to start picking some dates for the OTA? Closest to the date without going over wins a prize!

3.28.10 <—– My prediction for the DX

    • Coaster36

uh that was 9 months ago.

      fail

      • Anonymous

Don’t hate because I refuse to leave 2009 :P One day I’ll catch up with the rest of the world but not today!

    • Michael_NM

We need to find out when Matt the Moto forums “manager” is going on summer vacation. Therein “lies” the answer. My prediction/guess is June 23 (2.3), 2011.

I am sure that Droid Life will give us Gingerbread before Moto. :-)

      • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

        Better believe it! :P

  • RealGame22

What about battery life….other than that, I love Android.

  • argenys

The biggest thing is gaming. Can we get tap tap now?

    • FortitudineVincimus

gaming is the absolute last thing of importance to me. as a matter of fact, it is less than last of importance to me if that is even possible.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tuan-Pham/748703131 Tuan Pham

who knows when its going to be available to update, remember how long we waited for 2.2? hahah

  • Jager07

Glad I'm rooted! Bring on the roms

  • Drummer62

To bad they made it look like an apple announcement :( Loved the T-shirts though :)

  • blackcatroad

So I wonder, which ROM developer will be the first to bring Gingerbread goodness to the OG Droid?

Let Me Ask You This, When??

          • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

Tis not a matter of “when”. But a matter of “why”….

          • http://twitter.com/BluPhiTreClub Amon Murray

Look inside yourself and realize the Truth of the cookie.

You seek the Answer but do not know the Question….

          • PyroHoltz

            Love the commentary…keep it coming!

          • Romma1

That should be followed up with “grasshopper”

          • http://www.facebook.com/joelseph98 Joel Seph

            Boot to the head *thwap*!

        • http://twitter.com/azurikai Austin Witherow

you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about because CyanogenMod refuses to work on a ROM at all until the actual source is released. I guarantee leaks will appear before this.

        • FortitudineVincimus

Pete could be first if he does his just vanilla rooted release and not the full BB. I do not use his BB, but I use his vanilla rooted versions. This would be why I think he would be first

          • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

I will bet anyone cash money that Pete won’t be first ;)

          • Coaster36

You seem to know something we dont know.

So who will be first Mr. Tato?

          • http://www.droid-life.com Tim-o-tato

If Liam Neeson was a Android Dev, I would put my money on him. Or possibly Daniel Day-Lewis :P

This is great. This is just great.
