I see it as this. No matter how locked down the phone is, VZ is still going to see millions of them. Look how many D-Inc's and X's were sold. Come on, they got the ball rollin and we did nothing but turn it into a flying bullet. Android is going to be android and we're going to like it no matter what kind of phone it's one. Besides Motorola been in the communication business too long, and they're STILL going strong.

It isn't the 4G that I care about, 4G is a non issue for most people until the end of 2011 at the earliest. It is the fact that the Etna will be Verizon which has a more reliable network (4G or not) and I don't have to break my contract.

Especially if the Etna and Olympus are basically the same phone, there is no reason to break contract or switch.

Umm… I don’t see the problem. My DX is rooted, ROM’d and OC’d. It is undoubtedly the best device in have ever owned. I don’t envy the N1 owners who used to have a grey phone before the paint rubbed off. Thanks to developers I have exactly what I want… a phone with a vanilla Android experience with only a touch of Blur (that I selected) and a phone with a WAY better build quality than any HTC device. Everyone needs to quit whining and wait a couple weeks after release for the developers to do their thing and set it up the way you want. Or you can just go buy a plastic toy of a phone with an HTC logo on it and hope the screen doesn’t peel.

Can't ever fathom getting an AT&T Android phone until they stop castrating the OS. AT&T is horrible.

I don't live in America, so either way it'll probably be a variant of the one on AT&T (if my country ever gets it). But given a choice, I would go for an Verizon LTE enabled device any day

Have you seen the new features coming out in the ROM community that aren’t available on phones with locked boot loaders? Rooting isn’t everything, its the only thing.

Ok can someone please explain this to me? I'm not new to the rooting world by any means(as my OG Droid and incredible are both rooted)so you don't have to give me a rooting synopsis or anything, but the D2 and DX have been rooted haven't they?? So what's all of this “locked bootloader” talk I keep hearing? Did moto release an update that locks everything down and unroots you or something?

Motorola definitely made a strategic play. Instead of releasing 'locked' down phones first, they released an unlocked Vanilla Android Google experience phone..the OG Droid. It got people talking about how great Android was. The early adopters were of course, us, the tech-savvy. It eventually caught on, so then they dumbed it down a bit for the mainstream in the name of Blur. Us OG owners can customize, flash, reflash, etc till our hearts content to get it just how we want while the average user will just stick to the Blur widgets and call that 'awesome'. Trust me, I've seen it…. I've also seen late adopters of the OG Droid with nothing but screens full of app icons and never knew what a widget was, sad but true. Moto got the brand out, and I dunno if they will ever go back.
