Youtube Hits Android Market as Stand Alone App

The new Youtube app is available on the Android Market and looks to have been completely redesigned in a good way.  And truthfully, that’s an understatement as this new version is simply amazing.  You can watch videos in both portrait and landscape, view useful channel info, search easier and actually experience Youtube the way you do on a browser.

Add Youtube to the list of stock apps to hit the market alongside Gmail and Google Search.

Cheers Joseph!

i really appreciate this your good article, I love that feature, but there's no need for that here. When you download this, it replaces the old one. At least it did on my Droid X. :) thanks for this usefull informations

  • Ryan

After following the tips to use Titanium Backup to uninstall YouTube, reboot and then install the new YouTube from the market, it installed! Thanks guys!
    Droid CM6

  • Spatak

ok…but does it make video loading suck less?

  • Chris Nimon

Installed easily on Lithium Mod. Ran smoother for me than previous version.

  • Jtwildman1

Awesome, a lot better experience now. Looks and works great on my Droid.

  • DaVeknight001

Freedie won't work after you upgrade it

  • Plzachar

Boy-o-boy, the new YouTube performs like garbage on the Droid 1. Many of the music videos don't show on the screen although the music plays. When the videos do show up, they play in a jerky manner without the smooth quality I was use to in the original YouTube. HQ in the new YouTube is not as high quality in the original YouTube. Why does everyone want to fix that which “'aint broke”?????

  • billtvshow

Overall it looks like a very solid upgrade, though I don't see why the felt the need to take subscriber counts on the channel pages.

  • Ortizchief

I just got it is great works fine in my Droid 2 with high quality video I download it from the market as it appears today now I can record my videos in HD right from the app

  • tac

i cant download this it says installation unsuccesfull ive cleared market cache and data rebooted phone and unistalled app with titanium an rebooted again still not working

    • skltr21

are you rooted and running a custom ROM??? if so you need to download something that will give you access to your system files. i use titanium backup free version. go into that program and click the backup option up top. then scroll down to the youtube app. click it and it will give you options to do different things. click the option that says uninstall. it will uninstall it. reboot. go back to the market and download the youtube app again. done. let me know if you have any problems.

  • sylent101

Looks like the guy from palm is coming in handy ,hope we seemore apps looking like this especially the market app.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UZOAM2OQHMWFTAD2L2ULDNGIKA chris

Is it also available for the Milestone (2.1 eclair) cos I can't see the update in the Android Market?

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

      no froyo, no go.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UZOAM2OQHMWFTAD2L2ULDNGIKA chris

        Oh. :(

        Thanks, Devin.

  • Mr. Steve

I love how DroidLife posted this before Google's Mobile Blog did. This is why Droid-Life is the best! Hey Kellex, can we get a video or blog post review of the Logitech Revue, I want to hear an opinion on someone who's qualified before I send $300 on it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

my fav feature so far is how it doesnt force yu to go in landscape, but instead, plays like its a desktop computer and lets you view the description, related videos, and comments in portrait mode. also the improved seek bar!!! also my vids are also loading as fast as a desktop computer!!! looks like im gonna be using youtube a lot lot lot more form my phone! this is SPECTACULAR!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/RoyR80 Roy Rader

    worx on “chevyno1″ rom :-)

  • Nadtwist

    Works awesome on DroidX. :)

  • possomcrast1

the player looks like the desktop verison also!

  • MadMatt

    Legit!

  • Kdmaynes720

    No go for the fascinate

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

no foyo, no go, on a 2.1 fascin…O???

  • Mark D

    Link is not working.

  • me

wonder why it shows as “install” and not “upgrade”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

because its the first time being on the market.

  • Msullivan1984

I got this installed on my Incredible running CM 6.0.2. I uninstalled the Youtube app with Titanium Backup, rebooted the phone and installed the new Youtube app from the market and it installed. Hope this helps.

    • http://twitter.com/mikejr Mike Gardner

On my rooted DX I almost did this, but made a backup to see what would happen if I didn’t install the preloaded version and let the market one install (to see if the market one would install over the preloaded app). It installed fine and I only have one instance of the YouTube app. It works just like GMail did.

In my opinion this is how apps should work when installed from different “sources”. I can see double apps on the phone being an issue when there are a few app stores to download from unless the scenario is handled like this in the future.

  • FortitudineVincimus

will use LP+ to hide the old YT app and try this one

wow.. “Installation Unsuccessful” error, that is a first??

    • Michael_NM

I'm using LP+ too, and love that feature, but there's no need for that here. When you download this, it replaces the old one. At least it did on my Droid X. :)

      • FortitudineVincimus

        I see that now.

I had to backup the old one and delete it before I could install the new one for some reason.

This also means now I can move it to the SD card :)

Are you running a custom ROM? Some ROMs have Youtube as a system app which can't be replaced, so you have to use Root Explorer or the terminal emulator to delete the YouTube.apk and then install it from the market.

      • Chris

Can you walk me through how to do this. I have root explorer. Not sure where to navigate to delete the youtube.apk. Thanks

        • Chris

Ok. Now I’ve found it, but it will not let me delete it.

          • Anonymous

          • Anonymous

Delete it using Titanium Backup. It’s easier.

        • Anonymous

If you are using Root Explorer, navigate to /system/app. Once you are there click the Mount as R/W button. Then you can delete the Youtube.apk. If you are paranoid you can rename it to something like Youtube.old

Once that is done click Mount as R/O and then reboot. You must do this, otherwise it won’t work. After that just download the new Youtube from the Market. This has worked for me for the Google Search, LauncherPro update, and Youtube.

          • Chris

            Thanks!

      • FortitudineVincimus

I just used Root Explorer to to make a .bak file, zipped it up and saved it away, rebooted, downloaded the YT app and it went fine then. no custom ROM, just generic Pete's FRG01B

        • Anonymous

          what the hell

  • android

  • Animal67

  • Michael_NM

Completely off-topic: Are any other readers getting Firefox crashes when refreshing Droid-Life? I wonder if it's only me. Perhaps Mozilla is telling me I spend too much time here… :-)

  • ilikebikes

m.youtube.com still has much faster and better video quality.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThornfullessRose Devin Jones

      nope.

    • MadMatt

No way! This app is straight snappy as hell!

    • ilikebikes

watch an HD video via m.youtube.com on your phone's browser.
now watch the exact same video via the youtube app.

m.youtube.com site is waaaay better. prove me wrong.

      • HaHa, sure

Unicorns inhabit the clouds in the sky.

  • FUSIBLE

Im using BB V0.5 works great!

  • http://www.borderinvasionpics.com/ FlatFoot

Successful smooth install and works awesome on Droid X 2.2 -stock. I like this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/eidylon Aaron Abdis

Uhm, screenies look nice, but when I search in the market (manually, or using the barcode) it tells me there is no such app. :( . Galaxy S Captivate

    • One_ina_milli

      You have to have 2.2

      • http://www.facebook.com/eidylon Aaron Abdis

Argh; *sigh*… okay; yeah, I haven't gotten my Froyo yet.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WGJPWAKXRNJT35DUJPA55OCLDY Brian Wolters

Same here…can’t find it on my Captivate…but if it is because of 2.2, then Samsung better get on the ball!

  • puck

    installation unsuccesfull running Ultimate droid

    • http://www.myspace.com/abrielband Tim-o-tato

      Take a wild guess…..lol

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10215724 Raj Bhatt

You have to use Root Explorer or the terminal emulator to delete the YouTube.apk from system/app and then download this new version. Same with the LauncherPro update. It is super annoying, but it seems that a couple of other ROMs are having the same issue.

  • Ainiguez408

Does not install for UD 1.0.0….

    • Abraham3660

I had the same problem. Go into Titanium Backup and Uninstall Youtube. Then reboot the phone and then go into the market and it installs perfectly. Thanks Msullivan1984 for helping me.

      • Msullivan1984

        No problem

    • snoty

      Ditto

  • Mario

I wonder if it is because youtube is a system app. Has anyone on SS try deleting the sys app and than installing from market?

    • Mario

In regards to the fail install issue.

      • Mario

Ok nevermind. Installs fine on SS4.8.

  • jester4281

If you are like me and use a YouTube ripper type app it looks Luke you are screwed, the share features gone now.

  • RoadsterHD1

    Looks good,

  • http://www.facebook.com/z0mbiex Devi Garcia

    doesn't install on cyanogenmod6 on d1 unfortunately.

    • DMal82

I'm having the same problem, installation just keeps failing on CM6

      • DMal82

As an update for the CM6 guys I got it working by uninstalling the original youtube app with titanium, restarting, and then installing this from market

    • snoty

Does not install on my D1 with Ultimate Droid 1.0

    • Drew_VA

Same problem with ShadowROM 0.2.1, even uninstalled previous YouTube with Titanium. Same process got the new Gmail installed.

    • professionalgun

      Same freaking issue – CM6 D1. This blows. . . .

    • http://www.facebook.com/z0mbiex Devi Garcia

after uninstalling with titanium and then rebooting my phone it installs just fine..

      • Anonymous

that fix worked for me UD1.0

      • Anonymous

That’s the business! Thanks Devi – this is fantastic.

      • Dadahead

        Thanks for the tip Devi!

    • Anonymous

I’m leaving now to go pick up my Revue! I can’t wait. How is it Kellex?

    • ssjnimmaX

love it… only thing I dislike on the new update is that to share a video to any other social network you have to be in portrait view… cant be in landscape ;( otherwise it rocks!

    • Michael_NM

First reply to a comment from a Google TV. :)

      Show off. :P

  • Mrdat

Finally. A decent YouTube app. But honestly, the last one wasn't really bad in any way.

  • blink

Must only work on 2.2. Not showing up on my Fascinate.

    • kellex

Forgot about that. More than likely is only for 2.2.

  • http://twitter.com/vbhatt08 Vishhal Bhatt

    I scan it… nothing shows up… do i need 2.2? Stupid Milestone!

    • MrFixit

it showed up in the market when I scanned it with the Shop Savvy barcode scanner app

  • http://www.facebook.com/mamorgan1 Matt Morgan

    hmm…it won't install

    • kellex

If you have a theme it probably wont.

      • Anonymous

        Why is that?

  • Ben
