Android 2.2 Auto-Updates Apps?

Yep, Android 2.2 is more than officially upon us.  We showed you our analytics which pegged Android 2.2 testers cruising our site and now we’ve got photos from “official testers.”

Notice anything mind blowing about that photo?  AUTO-UPDATE!  Instead of getting 5 app update notifications per day, that can now all just happen in the background.  Thank you Android.

I’d hate to see an app auto-update then blow-up a phone due to some coding bug…Thanks for the information on blog. This information made my study easier.

The Apps on Phone is the list that will be created when it syncs to your phone which if you just flashed a ROM will be the default ones usually.

This is only for Google based apps or any Market app? I'd hate to see an app auto-update then blow-up a phone due to some coding bug…Thanks for the information on blog. This information made my study easier.

  • mortiz1978

I am having issues with Helix Launcher 2 freezing my entire phone y is that Kellex???

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/C7LAGNRI4X2NOLV5MCDTHEHXD4 sean

I don't know much about computers or the droid for that fact. Not to sound like an idiot but what is ROM. I see it a lot on here and don't understant what it is. Thanks in advance.

  • aarynk

Is it bad that I want 2.2 already?!?!?! hahaha…

  • NewDroidOrder

Im for sure not down with auto updates. When i first got my phone i was thinking it would be sweet, but the more i see apps get updated just to put ads in and all this other trash, i really would rather not. oh well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1039620066 Marc Anthony Lugo

Woo! about time they decided to do an auto update. I've been waiting for something like this to come out.

  • trumpet444

that's awesome. i hope the best of 2.2 will be available for rooters! (flash i hope)

  • removement

I see this being very handy, especially for core apps if they plan on removing those from the OS anyway

  • http://twitter.com/BSC_LeSTaT Michael Newson

I like the idea but I do hope it also tells you when its been updated so ill know to check new features or whatever

  • Phil

But what about those bad app updates? The ones that crash your phone? I like to look at comments before updating because I know whether or not I should update or just stick with my old versions that actually work.

    • http://twitter.com/Durrock2000 Derek Weber

I do the same because sometimes you need to uninstall the app before you install the update.

  • erocetc

I'd like to see a major overhall of the official Android Market website myself. Better websites like AppVee, AndroLib, and AppBrain make Google's site embarrasing. I've never been a fan of the Market app either.. it sucks trying to browse for anything on there..
But, I'm sure they're looking at all of that, being that this is Google we're talking about too.

  • gamboo

Kellex!!!! You have got to get your hands on a copy. Someone out there has it. Come on and share the wealth.

    • LTD10

Maybe kellex should take 4chan out for a few drinks… lol ;)

  • sr_erick

Ohhhh man, auto updates will be awesome! I don't understand why they didn't at least have an “Update all” button in the current version. It's a complete pain and waste of time to update half a dozen apps a day manually if you have a bunch installed.

  • syntakk

Thank God, a friend was just complaining about lack of auto-update yesterday. It's about time!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/RXFWXDUWRRHCGFV6NP2SDZ7YLU Ray

Sounds like good news but I won't be unrooting to later find out that it will take me an arm and a leg to reroot I'm waiting until they put this stuff in a rom. I learned my lesson.

  • picaso86

can you post something on the new incredible ROM for Droid…?

  • http://twitter.com/guanako Alberto Deleon

notice comments get their own tab too! awesome.

  • http://twitter.com/TheRemby Mike Remby

Thats great but, is 2.2 gonna have flash?

  • iApex

I'd like to see this feature released in a ROM.
    Wouldn't that be nice :)

  • RLJSlick

Excellent! I love the auto update idea! I hope 2.2 comes with flash.

  • shane0790

notice one more thing. No longer do you scroll down to find the comments – it's now ingrained in a tab

  • Meticode

It's kind of scaring you got the source from 4Chan.

    • jeesung

      it been taken down from 4Chan . . .

  • xFenixKnightx

Does this mean MyTouch is jumping from 1.6 to 2.2????

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/RXFWXDUWRRHCGFV6NP2SDZ7YLU Ray

The my touch isn't a strong enough device to handle 2.0 let alone 2.2

      • xFenixKnightx

Yeah I figured that much. Just thought it was wierd they were using Mytouch and not Incredible/N1 or something newer.

  • kulz

    lets go 2.2~!

  • goose50

Sweet, that would stop my habitual checking of the market dot app updates. It's a little but of a compulsive problem.

    • http://www.milky-designs.com MikeDcaffey

Ha yes i agree with you on that.

    • Michael_NM

Goose, thanks for sharing that. I'm horrible about that myself. After I shut my alarm (docked Droid) off in the morning, I check for updates before reading emails… So, it's nice to know I'm not the only Droidaholic out there.

    • http://twitter.com/tender82 tender82

I don't know if I'll allow auto-updates. I guess I will IF it tells me that an app has been updated. I like getting new features. For now, I check it almost every day!

  • domnisoara

Notice also in the image above what is in the notification bar — the symbol for Google gesture search. I wonder if that means that it's integrated in 2.2?

  • scorpion77

That is a Great idea !! Now if only they would come up with a app that would install all my apps at onces that i backed when i flash a new rom instead of installing each one at a time ..

    • slatejones

Titanium backup will, just use the batch button then find the spot where it says install all. I dont know if it is just a premium feature or not, but I have the premium version and I hit run and 2 seconds later all my apps are reinstalled with the market links intact.

      • scorpion77

hmmm i don't know will give it a shot because installing each app is a Pain in the asss !!!

    • Yagermeister

Try http://www.appbrain.com! Works like a charm to restore all of your apps after swapping ROMs. By the way Kellex, thanks for turning me into a ROM addict because of your easy to follow tutorials ;)

      • eak128

        Does it save data also?

        • Yagermeister

It does not store your data. But it will reinstall all the apps you had on your phone.

Basically you go to your PC and go through the directory installing and uninstalling all apps for your phone. You can also create lists of apps (which you will want to if loading new ROMs all the time). I have the default one (Apps on Phone) which will sync what you need and “Reinstall List” . The Apps on Phone is the list that will be created when it syncs to your phone which if you just flashed a ROM will be the default ones usually. Here is what I received from Appbrain support regarding how do I put my Reinstall List onto the phone after I flashed a new ROM:

“do not sync yet. First go to appbrain.com/my_apps , then select all
the apps and then “add to list” / create new list [I created the Reinstall List].
Then you have a copy of all the apps.
Then you can sync (this will delete all the apps, because there are no
          apps on the phone)
Then copy the apps back (via select all, add to list) to the original
          list and sync again.

We are working on a way to do all these steps automatically, but for
now this is what you need to do.”

or you could download backup pro http://www.ipmart-forum.com/attachment.php?atta… right here.

      • http://twitter.com/tbaybe02 Tricia Henson

i used MyBackUpPro to restore my phone- worked great, auto downloaded all my apps! And even restored most data and settings!

  • Drew

That's so much better than update all…awesome!

  • webnote

    Coool!

I wonder if this is only for Google based apps or any Market app? I'd hate to see an app auto-update then blow-up a phone due to some coding bug…

    • jeesung

that looks to be App specific so you can choose for each one

      My thoughts exactly….

  • dustinvandeman

interesting…most likely it will still be a very long time before we have 2.2

  • briderx

Awesome! Again Kellex… You called this week! It's getting better and better! Think tomorrow will go out with a bang?

      Hah I told you. :)

Even more goodies coming in minutes.

      • briderx

Unrelated: But you should create a section of this site called “Kellex Korner” or something like that, where unrelated questions could go. I have stopped visiting all other droid sites, as yours is the most complete and frequently updated. So, if I have a question that doesn't fit one of your awesome reviews, I'd like a place to ask…
