Android App Review: xScope Browser

The battle for best browser continues on as we take a minute to review one of the power players in the market. We already covered Dolphin 2.0 back in January and since then, had heard many rumors about this other guy named xScope.  The browser was rumored to have a one-fingered multi-touch action.  (Seriously?)  It also seemed to be constantly updated by its developers which is always reason enough to check something out.  There is nothing worse than an app with no support right?

Check out xScope in action…

It always just kind of seemed incomplete to me, can’t really put my finger on the exact reason. Pinch zoom was also pretty rough at the time….

It has all that and on top has gestures like opera, which you can customize to use for anything and everything.

The xScope browser application on the Google Android platform provides a full-fledged browsing experience. It is the fastest browser …

  • Blahblahblah

I think the stock browser might be the best bet if you don’t mind having no tabs etc.I installed xscope 6 today and i must say it doesn’t load all pages that well that the stock browser loads with no problem. I tried playing a video from motherless.com today to get a quick jerk in and it would play the video. I switched to stock and i was able to cum watching the video on there. seriously though, i hope they fix the page loading problem etc if they did i’d switch from stock.

It would be really a good browser as to have a one-fingered multi-touch action and also seemed to be constantly updated by its developers which is always reason enough to check something out.

One thing I dont like about this browser is that when you zoom in the txt is arranged to show the zoomed page. Its kinda of anoying specially if you wanna see something specific in the page.

Finally … a one finger zoom!!!
    No, not being sarcastic.
Was looking at Getting the Galaxy 550 which has a smallish screen and no multitouch.
That was my sticking point … other than that, the phone specs seem great.

    Android here I come.

Hey you know of, if 2. 1-Version fà ¼ r the Droiden out? Its been a while since the upgrade should become, and still undischarged far!

  • Droidininwood

I just downloaded the full version and it takes a bit of practice, but this browser is super fast and blows away the Dolphin

  • Russ

Ok this is weird. Suddenly my Google Maps app is doing pinch zoom, and it seems this started after downloading xScope! Downloaded Dolphin at the same time but just uninstalled because I like xScope's UI better. Still doing pinch zoom in Maps. Have not tried uninstalling xScope, but has anyone else found this?

    • Russ

Ok, actually I'm pretty positive it's xScope, because Maps is also doing the one-finger “multitouch” zoom. That. Rocks.

  • US_Marine_beta

If I download a picture online using xScope, it doesn't show up in my gallery until i reboot my Droid. Anyone else experiencing this or anyone have a fix for this?

  • http://www.twitter.com/JenningsChrist JenningsChrist

Has anyone else been having any issues with Gmail not syncing the past few days? Could just be me, but it also happened to start right after I downloaded xscope. Probably just a coincidence, wondering if anyone else has had issues.

  • rockymtnhigh

Thanks for this review. Just downloaded it and played with it for an hour. A great browser, with some really cool features. I did have one lockup though – the whole phone did the equivalent of a BSOD. Hoping that was an isolated glitch, as I really like this browser.

  • Joandy

It is a nice browser!! I didn't like Dolphin cuz it was slow when dealing with tabs (just my experience). One thing I dont like about this browser is that when you zoom in the txt is arranged to show the zoomed page. Its kinda of anoying specially if you wanna see something specific in the page. Did any1 else noticed this?

    • Joandy

Found a fix for that!!! Under settings->layout select normal and it wont resize the page to fit the new zoomed view.

  • Lance Goodthrust

I must have missed something. Dolphin has everything you showed and much more. The only thing Dolphin doesn't have is the one finger zoom. The tabs, easy copy paste, the swipe from window to window. It has all that and on top has gestures like opera, which you can customize to use for anything and everything. How is XSCOPE better than Dolphin?

    • Chuck

The reviewer didn't cover it, but it's better because it's a) faster b) more attractive c) cleaner d) better UI

  • jeesung

The description says it a file & task browser and paid version has a task killer. Have you tried out any of these functions?

  • Ace Z.

Hey Kellex how come the old look of droid-life's site comes up on my work computer? And it's stuck on the Skype video promo…

    • kellex

Some places are still having issues. Have you tried a hard refresh CTRL+F5? Hoping that everyone can see it by tomorrow.

  • Meticode

Nice browser. Still waiting for Firefox Mobile, aka Fennec.

  • kerrhome

I think both of your bar codes above are bad. One took me to the pre android 2.0 version and the other didn't work. I think you want to link to (free) xScope Web File Task Browser and (paid) xScope Browser (Web File Task), which is $2.99. Of course this assumes you are a DROID or better.

    • kellex

      Thanks for letting me know.

  • erocetc

I've used xScope since reading through the developer's forum section back in December. He's very active and takes ideas and questions from users too. By far my favorite browser.

I downloaded the free version of scope and it didn't give me multi-touch… what did i do wrong??

Same here, one finger zoom works, pinch does not. Haven't found a setting to change either.

      • http://twitter.com/Cleetose Alex Butler

The free version doesn't have multi touch.

        • http://www.robplatt.com/ Rob

I downloaded the free version, and I do have multi-touch.

          • http://twitter.com/Cleetose Alex Butler

My mistake, there are two free versions. The xScope Browser Lite doesn't have Multi-touch, but the other one does.

  • Evan

Copying in the regular browser is also a breeze, just hold the shit button on the physical qwerty and drag your finger of the text you want and it automatically selects it. Then you can go to any text field, hold the physical MENU button and while holding it click V to paste the copied text. Its all just too easy

    • dm

I don't have that button – did you mean “shift”? :-)

      • Rezin

well to be fair all the buttons on the physical keyboard are shit

        • Ellianth

These three comments are full of win. First one taught me something new. Second one made me laugh (i read it as shift). Third one added to the fun. I love you 3 :).

    • BRIM

      Never knew this….amazing! Thank you!

      • http://twitter.com/TedPavlic TedPavlic

Alternatively, hit the “Menu” capacitive button, click “More”, and then click “Select text.” It's identical to the xScope method after that. (and I'm guessing xScope supports the shift method too)

Alternatively, hit the physical menu key and the “E” key at the same time to activate “Select text” mode.

    • Evan

1st, @dm i did mean shift, but i was swyping and for some reason it didnt put in shift XD as is the reason for the other spelling and grammar mistakes….

2nd, @Rezin Keyboard is better than no keyboard, it is the reason why we can do all these shortcuts and the N1 cant! and I love the keyboard now, i have gotten completely used to it and can now text without looking! it just needs some determination to get used to it

      3rd, @Ellianth I completely agreed with you

4th, @BRIM I know!!!!! its a reason to love this phone even more! and wait, i am posting a link at the end which will really make you happy

5th, @TedPavlic I am guessing you know what i know, how awesome is it to have a keyboard!

Finally: @EVERYONE http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/1… amazing list of all the keyboard shortcuts you can do! check it out!

  • bksone74

great browser so far but the pinch to zoom doesn't work at all for me. the one tap then zoom with one finger works though… strange.

  • syntakk

I used scope for a while a few months ago. It always just kind of seemed incomplete to me, can't really put my finger on the exact reason. Pinch zoom was also pretty rough at the time. Maybe it has improved some since then, I'll have to check out the video after work.
