DROID X “Old Version” Appears in Verizon Accounts, What Does it Mean?

by: | posted 02.16.11 | News

The words “Motorola DROID X Old Version” are now appearing online in Verizon accounts across the country, leaving many of you wondering if this could have something to do with the DROID X2‘s imminent release.  Sorry folks, but I think it actually has something to do with that pricing change from yesterday.  If you happened to return to our post about the DX’s price drop to $149, you might have noticed an “Update 2″ which talks about a change from the 16GB SD card that original adopters enjoyed to the measly 2GB card that is now included.  Normally when a significant change like this happens to a device, a brand new SKU is introduced to inventory systems which we’re thinking has prompted the distinction for “old version” and new version.  Of course, I could be totally wrong and this could have something to do with the DX2, but I’m sort of doubting it.

DROID X Drops to $149 on Verizon Site, the End is Near? (Updated)

by: | posted 02.15.11 | News

The DROID X appears to have welcomed in a $50 price drop to $149 online which is usually a good sign that the device is about to hit “end of life” status.  We know the DROID X2 is right around the corner and step 1 towards device re-hash usually starts with pricing adjustments.  We’ll hold off from doing a formal eulogy until we actually see a DX2 announcement, but if you feel like expressing your feelings for this device, now would be a good time to start preparing them.

Here are a couple examples of previous pricing adjustments:

And on a related note, if you try to find the DX on Verizon’s normal site, you won’t.  As of right now, you can only access the phone by starting at droiddoes.com and then redirecting to their new and incredibly slow Flash site.

Update 1:  Phone is back on VZW’s regular site.  Nice to know they read this blog of ours.

Update 2:  A 16GB SD card is no longer included with the phone.  You only get a 2GB now.  (Cheers ac666!)

Liberty ROM 1.5 Released for DROID X/2

by: | posted 02.03.11 | DROIDX, News, Root

I’ve been running Liberty ROM 1.0 since day one, so when JRummy, Kejar and the boys dropped 1.5 last night our week became instantly awesome.  They’ve added the ability to overclock through the toolbox, fixed all bugs, and removed even more Blur.  This version is as clean as it gets, so jump on it now DX users.  Oh, you can finally have that new Liberty wallpaper that I’ve been sporting for the last couple of weeks courtesy of davekover.

Verizon Rebate Policy Changes Go Into Effect, No Need to Worry

by: | posted 02.02.11 | News

When Verizon informed us that their rebate policy was changing and that top tier devices would no longer have $100 mail-in-rebates, but devices under $149 still would, a lot of people were concerned at what that actually meant.  We were then provided with the list of rebate and non-rebate devices over the weekend, except the pricing situation was still up in the air for the top dogs.  Well, as you can see from the shot above, the DROID X which used to be a $299 plus $100 MIB device, is now just listed at $199, which is great news.  You no longer have instant discounts or mail-in-rebates for these top tier devices and we couldn’t be happier.

Gingerbread for the DROID X Arrives, Reminds us of the DROID BIONIC

by: | posted 01.31.11 | News

Our buddies over at MyDroidWorld got a hold of something that should excite all of the DROID X readers in the world.  Who’s ready for Gingerbread (Android 2.3) with the brand new version of Blur that we showed you all at CES?  I know, I know, you all hate MotoBlur.  But try your hardest to at least attempt to trust me when I say that the new version that was featured on the DROID BIONIC, was actually not bad.  It no longer looks like it was made for toddlers, has some really nice new shortcuts within apps/menus, and will likely be a strong competitor with HTC’s Sense for best skin.

We’ve dropped our BIONIC video walk-through below to give you some live action of the new Blur, but be sure to follow that up with the gallery directly after to see actual Gingerbread DX shots.  And now we’ll all attempt to wait patiently for MDW to release a build to rooted users.

DROID X2 Running Under Codename “Daytona”?

by: | posted 01.26.11 | News

Last week, our sources tipped us to the proposed roadmap for the DROID brand for the first half of 2011 and it included the new version of the DROID X, which we’ve been told will simply be called the DROID X2.  A couple of days later, we were also told that the device would end up having a Tegra 2 dual-core clocked at 1GHz, could be out by May and will not a 4G LTE device.  Actually, that was the second time we had been told it would not be 4G.

And today, a report dropped out of HotHardware confirming all of this, well except for the 4G part.  According to their sources, the DROID X2 is currently floating around VZW or Moto headquarters as the “Daytona” and will indeed have a dual-core processor, new qHD screen, and the same battery as the original DX.  They aren’t willing to completely drop the 4G tag from it yet, but we’re pretty sure you can forget about those speeds on this phone.  The device will also have the same HDMI-out, micro-USB, and 8MP camera.

Time to start digging around for Motorola Daytona references.

DROID Bootloader Accepts a New Challenger, Progress Already Made?

by: | posted 01.19.11 | DROIDX, News, Root

After months of attempts from some of the industry’s best, the DROID X bootloader and stock kernel remain in tact.  While there are ways to tip-toe around it, we have never actually had full access to the phone and have always approached ROMs on the device with extra caution.  Today though, it looks like a new challenger has accepted the task and claims to have made some actual progress using kexec in an attempt write over the stock DX kernel.  What is kexec?  With my lack of linux knowledge, I’m not about to attack that one, but do know that it’s a way for someone to boot a new kernel over a currently running one.

Will it finally be done?  I have no idea, but I wish this brave soul the best of luck.

You can follow him on Twitter:  @aliasxerog

You can also check his new site dedicated to the task, plus look for mirrors of his first attempt later on today.  From what I’ve gathered, his first attempts at flashing a new kernel were semi-successful, but are completely unstable and needs help from the community to make this thing work.

Good luck!
