How to: Bluetooth Tether to Motorola XOOM Using Original DROID

by: | posted 03.01.11 | DROID, News, Root, Tips, XOOM

Yesterday we put together our guide on how to wireless tether your DROID X to your Motorola XOOM, but wanted to make sure we covered all of the original DROID members out there as well.  And since the original DROID creates an ad-hoc spot rather than infrastructure like the DX or various other phones, a standard wireless tether won’t work, so we have to go with Bluetooth instead.  Luckily, the Wireless Tethering app from the market has a Bluetooth option, and that’s exactly what we’ll be using here.  I should also point out that this method does require that you root your original DROID, but for those of you with a DX, D2 or Pro, you can apparently do this without rooting.

How to: Wireless Tether a Motorola XOOM to a DROID X

Many of you probably already know how to tether your phone to your brand new Motorola XOOM, but we wanted to make sure that the whole community was covered and whipped up this quick guide.  It doesn’t get much easier than this, folks.

Motorola XOOM 4G LTE Upgrade Instructions from Verizon

by: | posted 02.28.11 | News, Tips

In approximately 90 days (according to our information), the 4G LTE upgrade for the Motorola XOOM will be ready and that means you’ll need to send your device in.  In order to make sure that process goes as smoothly as possible, Verizon has posted up instructions to help you get ready and we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss them.

Step 1:  Backup your XOOM

This step is simple, but requires you to connect your XOOM to a computer.  All you need to know here, is how to access your internal storage from a computer, copy all of the files on it, and move them into a safe spot on your computer’s hard drive.  This is the same process you would follow if you were backing up your phone’s SD card, only the XOOM just has internal storage for now.

Step 2:  Encrypt and reset your XOOM (optional)

Verizon is recommending that you encrypt and also factory reset your device in case it gets lost or something happens to it throughout the upgrade process. Encrypting will take up to an hour, but performing a factory reset to remove all personal info from your device should take no time at all.

Step 3:  Pack and ship your XOOM to Motorola

We received word back at CES that you would have to ship your XOOM back to Motorola in order to be upgraded to 4G, but apparently this was still a surprise to everyone last week.  The good news is, that Verizon or Moto will send you a FedEx package to drop your device in for its return.  This entire process is 100% free.

Tip: Save 25% OFF a $799 Motorola XOOM Without a Contract (That’s $200) (Updated)

by: | posted 02.24.11 | News, Tips

Update:  The coupon code has been fixed at Motorola’s site since it was allowing people to order discounted XOOMs when it should have just been discounting accessories.  The good news is that Motorola reached out to us to confirm that they will honor all orders placed before the coupon code was pulled.  A ton of you received one heck of a deal.  Might want to tip your glass to Moto tonight.

This might be the deal of the century right here people.  If you want to pick up a Motorola XOOM and pay just $600 for the non-contract version (the $799 version) then follow these steps immediately.  This is not a scam, not a joke, but is absolutely the real deal.  And if you just purchased one from Best Buy or Verizon, you may want to consider returning it to save yourself a couple hundred bucks.

So how is this possible?  With the Chad OchoCinco News Network (OCNN) 25% off coupon code of course.  If you remember during the Super Bowl, OCNN was giving away 25% off coupon codes for the Motorola store and they aren’t expiring until March 15th.  And guess what?  You can use them on a XOOM.

Tip: Switch the Honeycomb Emulator from Tablet to Phone Mode

by: | posted 02.23.11 | News, Tips

I just want to start this off by reminding everyone that Honeycomb is never coming to your smartphone, at least not officially.  Even after you read this post and play with a half-baked version that looks like it was made for a phone, know that Google has already told us that we’ll be seeing the real thing in Ice Cream (Sandwich?) and that’s it.  This is really just for the geek in all of us that wants to waste a good 15 or 20 minutes.

So yeah…all you have to do is download the new Honeycomb SDK, set up an emulator with a resolution of 400×600 and watch Honeycomb switch over into phone mode.  And really, it just ends up looking like Gingerbread, but you will still see the Honeycomb-blue highlights around menus, HC icons, and even those beautiful 3D screen transitions.  Have fun!

How to use your desktop as a SMS workstation [without Google Voice]

by: | posted 02.08.11 | Apps, Tips

I’ve been running into a certain phone-related problem with alarming frequency lately: I come home from class and throw all my gear down in a pile at the foot of my bed. As a result, my phone remains hidden in my jacket’s pocket or inside my bag, and I will miss SMS notifications until either my phone dies or I finally notice something is awry. A simple answer to this would be to simple clean up my room, but I’ve found a more Android solution.

I’ve fixed this problem with a two applications that are free to the market and work quite well. With them, I’ve found a way to be notified of and answer SMS from the comfort of my browser window.

A Few LauncherPro Docks to Brighten Your Day

by: | posted 01.13.11 | Apps, News, Tips

About 10 minutes ago, I hit up Twitter with the screenshot above to show off a new dock that was passed on to me and it seemed to get a decent amount love.  So I thought, why not post up the dock in a few different colors for the rest of you all to enjoy?  The original dock actually came in white and was made by XDA member sonnysekhon for his Nexus One and S ROMs and was then handed to me by our favorite Android veggie, Tim-o-tato.

Grab them all after the break!
