Video: Google’s Eric Schmidt Lays Out His Predictions for 2014

eric schmidt

While not completely related to mobile, whenever Eric Schmidt has something to say, we have no problem sparing the time to listen. In a recent video posted by Bloomberg, Schmidt lays out his predictions for the year of 2014, which includes everyone rocking a smartphone, big investment from Google in social networking, and “unfathomably” important steps in finding additional treatments for cancer and other various diseases.

While his predictions may not be 100% spot on for what takes place – as our very own Ron Offringa would happily tell you about Schmidt’s lolz-worthy predictions for the success of Google TV – we never know what is in store for the human race.

If you have two minutes to spare, check out what Schmidt has to say.

  • http://twitter.com/jdrch jdrch

Schmidt is the biggest hypocrite in tech. I’m not interested in anything he has to say.

  • Al-Burrit0

Any predictions for Moto’s plans? They should just keep improving and tweaking their great features like active display & touchless controls. More features to moto maker and more wood!EDIT: Bold Prediction of 2014: Moto’s flagship phone will finally come with a good camera right from the beggining :)

  • http://petervideos.com/ Peter Mansour

Tim Cook can even compare to this guy

  • BananaBob

    ERIC SCHMIDT for President!!

  • mikesuds

Any chance of getting a summary in the article?

    • mustbepbs

That would require that DL actually does their job, which they won’t.

      • Guy

        Then why you here bro?

        • mustbepbs

Not really sure, actually. It’s just part of my daily news run. It’s easily showed up by Androidcentral and Androidpolice. At least they have original articles.

          Peace.

          • Mike Aurin

Is it too late to vote this man “cunt of the year” or have the polls for that closed already?

          • Mayoo

Actually it is just the right time. Within a few days, he could become “cunt of year” 2013 and also get away with “cunt of the year” 2014! At least for a few weeks.

          • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

            Peace, dude!

        • JBartcaps

Obviously to make outrageous claims to try and push his own personal agenda without any concrete evidence to back up his posts

          • mustbepbs

What, that DL is lazy and has let their success, however small, go to their heads? Just look at the site a year ago versus today. They’re so lazy with their articles and updates, especially with their new hires. It’s just awful.

          • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Somebody has a case of a Mondays :(

          • mikesuds

Just have to say… I sort of agree with the guy. This site is a shell of what it once was. With the awful new layout and lack of effort when it comes to articles like this one, it’s pretty sad. You’re that willing to let readers go and just say goodbye? well, guess I am out too then. Peace, dude.

There were no posts on DL today, one year ago…

      • Chris Hughes

        Dude…what is your problem?

      • Chris

they did their job just fine. Its not their problem you are to lazy to watch a 2 minute video. Takes longer to read though the comments and post a good response.

      • Pedro

Keep checking in. Hypocrites lose their validation when they are quiet.

      • Guest

you sure comment a lot for being at work and not able to watch a 2 min video

      2014: unfathomable.

    • Chris Hughes

      It’s 2 minutes…

      • mikesuds

I am at work. Sorry dude.

        • Mayoo

          So am I …

          • mikesuds

            Ok. Awesome!

        • Chris

then wait till your break or lunch or till you get home. Simple huh?

    • Chris

are you that lazy or do you need a picture?

  • Eric R.

    QWERTY will make a comback

    • Mayoo

I guess you wanted to say “physical keyboard”. Because qwerty still exists … it is only a layout.

    • Chris

it left? my EVO LTE thats all touch screen has it. Even desktops and laptops still have it..

  • possomcrast1

Schmidt, like Bill Gates, is very smart. He’s one of the reasons Google has stayed relevant and with the constantly changing technologies of the world.

    • Mark

Except YouTube has gone in reverse over the past few years IMO

      • Mike Aurin

In your opinion, how has YouTube gone down?

        • Mark

Comments are now sorted by # of replies rather than votes. Change in buffering is a pain. Ads play seamlessly but when I want to watch a video, it struggles to play at times. Top videos of the day are now a hidden feature.

YouTube was great but it seems like over the past year or 2 they have taken steps backwards instead of forward.

          • Derpyderp

Ads – adblock plus & mvps hosts.

        • Chris

the comment system maybe. Though that was just a catch 22

        • coolsilver

Also no separate Youtube channels. Tied direct to a Google+ Profile which must be a real name. Older accounts are exempt and attached to a page which is also a bandaided mess.

      • possomcrast1

This only adds to my point; the Youtube comment re-design was ordered by Google execs in order to promote Google+ and provide a more connected experience. Whether you like it or not a more connected experience is the future and what people want-especially once they adapt it further to work a lot better.

        • James Briano

But they’re connecting YouTube users to a horribly confusing experience.

          • possomcrast1

Google + needs to and WILL improve, too.

          • James Briano

Meanwhile I field calls from friends and family asking “What is this Google+? Why is it on my phone? How do I get rid of it? What’s a Circle? Where did Latitude go? Why do I keep getting emails from Google+? Why are my YouTube comments on Google+ when I don’t even have Google+…”

          • TechTinker11

Well then your friend needs to stay in the Apple circle if he dosent want anything to change.

          • AustinM123

“Where is my floppy disk drive? What do you mean my new computer can’t run XP? Where is my dos prompt? What do you mean CD drives aren’t being put into computers anymore? What do you mean Office 2003 can’t be installed? What do you mean the YouTube comments changed.” Society wants technology to become lighter, faster, more connected, more fluid, yet people can’t part with the past. If we can’t evolve and change then we will stay in the past forever.

        • michael arazan

They don’t give users options though. Some people may want all their accounts connected, others may not.
Especially now with employers googling employees online footsteps some people would rather keep things separate. That is why china has dual sims, one for jobs and the other for personal. People goofing off online on their own time don’t need their employers cyber stalking them

      • NIGHTSCOUT

Past few years? No. Past few months? Yes. The forced integration of Google+ has ruined the experience.

    • Google This

      Schmidt is a douchebag.

      • Michael Hammond

Wow a real thought-out response …. good job ….

        • Sally S

Great burn, Mikey!!!. You showed him or her!

And quit rolling your eyes, it makes you look ghey.

  • mustbepbs

I predict more of the same. Maybe HTC will go under this year. That would be a treat.

It’ll be interesting to see what the iPhone 6 does. I’m hoping they increase the screen size, but I think that’ll throw more wrenches into the App Store having 3 different iPhone sizes and two different iPad sizes.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Honestly, why would HTC going under be a treat? You want an ecosystem completely dominated by a single manufacturer like Samsung? No thank you, sir! I want options, choices, and variety! Fingers crossed the American gov. will find a reason to bail out HTC this year ;)

      • mustbepbs

Because they’re easily the worst OEM. Sure their phones look nice, but their updates are always late and their support for older devices is crap. It doesn’t even matter if they’re around anyway since Samsung dominates Android with or without them. HTC isn’t even a blip on the radar for Samsung.

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Easily the worst? Nahhhh, I’d have to disagree. They are still better than others. For example, after KK was announced, they said 90 days for all One devices to get the update. Samsung never did anything like that, and some of their year old phones are just now getting Android 4.3. Either way, HTC going under wouldn’t be good for the industry. They keep Sammy and Moto on their toes, so that’s important.

          • mustbepbs

HTC only plays catch up to Samsung, proven by their “mega” phone. They fill their devices with crappier features than Samsung, with their “me-too” fingerprint scanner and Beats and UltraPixel.

          • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Whether you like BoomSound or an Ultrapixel camera on a device is all user preference. Some people prefer those things. Either way, HTC going under won’t benefit anybody in my opinion, besides their competition of course.

          • mustbepbs

It’s not like people are buying their devices, so “user preference” has nothing to do with it, because “user preference” just so happens to be most Android customers, and most Android customers are going Samsung.

Nobody would notice them going under. Nobody.

          • Greg Morgan

            I would notice… :p

          • mustbepbs

            EDIT: Nobody except Greg Morgan.

          • MikeKorby

Actually, I know a few individuals who exclusively use HTC devices. Just because you do not like them, does not mean that everyone dislikes them. It is a known fact that they have slid tremendously since even their WinMo days, but I applaud what they have done to try and regain ground. the HTC one is widely accepted as a competitive device, and has even gone as far as to potentially cause a shift for android in the use of an Aluminum body, which Samsung is reported as utilizing for the Galaxy S V.

That said, I personally have become a moto guy, and I have never been much of a fan of HTC, largely because of the UI tweaks. I would not wish them ill, fate, however, since competition is a necessary element to innovation.

          • Rodeojones000

I would notice. Fewer Android device manufacturers would be a bad thing. If you don’t like HTC that’s your preference. But that’s no reason to hope for their demise, especially when they put out such a fantastic device like the HTC One.

          • Jacob Mustin

You make the false assumption that Samsung is thriving due to its products. It is not. It is mainly due to advertising and word of mouth. They have the WOW factor that many ignorant consumers love. The fact that they are light years further in market share compared to HTC is not solely based on the product itself my friend. The galaxy series is great, to be sure, but only ahead by such a majority due to the mass of consumers who only buy a name they know. ‘Galaxy’ and ‘iPhone’ are the main prominent ones right now. Its a shame, because other OEMS, HTC included, are doing some really near things, things that many people would love if they experienced it.

          • Chris

you would since you are saying they will….

          • JBartcaps

Crappier features? HTC actually has a lot of useful features on the HTC One. I’m also pretty sure with the amount of “features” GS4 has that most of them are crappy and useless.

          • mustbepbs

Like what? Airview/hover view and multiwindow are actually useful. Smart Stay is useful. Pretty sure BoomSound is placebo and Ultrapixel produces worse pictures.

          • JBartcaps

2 family members and 3 friends have the GS4, none of them even know what those are. The only feature my dad uses on his phone is Easy Mode. The One can take some really nice photos. Zoe is useful and awesome. Blinkfeed is great. BoomSound does work. The design is gorgeous.

          • Guy

WHOA….. Go home you’re drunk dude. If you think boom sound is placebo, you’ve clearly never used it. EVER. It is hands down louder and clearer than ANY other speaker on phones these days. It’s Beats you’re thinking of.

And I’ve owned GS3, Note 2, GS4, and Note 3 and I can verify that airview hover golf shot quick glance smart scroll blah blah were ALL worthless. They were fun to show your friends in a bar and outside of that, they were all turned off all the time. They added no extra functionality that was helpful/useful.

          • Chris

This was HTCs comeback year. 2014 they will come back in full swing. Just need to improve on marketing and have all models and colors at launch and no carrier exclusives like 64GB phones with AT&T

        • Chris

2011 called. it wants you back

      • zurginator

HTC isn’t an American company, so good luck with that. I predict LG and Motorola are both going to grow into some decent competition though. If Sony would just jump on the monster that is their brand recognition, they could easily break in as well.

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

The bail out was a joke. ;)

      • MikeCiggy

While I agree that HTC is a great competitor to have around can we not spend my money on bailing out a company who has failed itself. I didn’t tell them to make a useless gigantic phone with a finger print scanner on the back.

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Everyone makes mistakes. Hopefully 2013 was a major learning experience for them.

          • mustbepbs

2012 was supposed to be their “learning experience”.

            They didn’t learn.

I’ll give them credit for their deal with Apple, though. That was forward thinking.

          • Chris

clearly you’ve been living under a rock

          • Chris

I think it was. The only problem was the new colors and the mini/max being added months after the initial launch of the HTC one. Hopefully next year everything will be ready and launched at the same time.

      • Ian Smith

your joke was sucky and you should feel sucky

        • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

your use of an old meme is sucky :P

      • Chris

This is what makes android so great. Choices. No one wants just samsung or just nexus devices.

    • Chris

HTC won’t go under. they had a decent year in 2013 and 2014 it should only get better.
