Google Music Update Introduces “I’m Feeling Lucky” Radio Button to Android and Web

google music android

Yesterday, a new version of Google Music arrived through Google Play, but as usual is a staged rollout that likely hasn’t hit many of us yet. The update jumps the build number up to 5.2.1233L.870763 and appears to be mostly minor. There is one new addition, though, and that’s a “I’m feeling lucky” radio button (also seen in the web player). Based on your listening history, a press of that button will put together a playlist for you that Google feels will satisfy your needs.

We aren’t seeing anything else new at the moment, but if we do, we’ll update this post.

If you want to stay official, you can try to grab the update from Google Play. Again, it’s a staged rollout so it may not be available to all for at least a few more days. If you want it now, you can grab it below and sideload it.

Now it they would just fix the bug that allows the app to stream low bitrate files when you have selected the check box to always stream the highest quality. I’m not about to drop my $7.99/mo All-Access subscription but every day I miss the clarity of Spotify’s streams.

  • MikeKorby

Also a question: on my GNex running CM 10, if i hold down the volume up button while the screen if off, it skips to the next song, and skips back if volume down is pressed. I was wondering if this is a feature on other devices, or is it a CM nugget?

  • MikeKorby

Used it today, and it worked great!

  • Frawlz

I still can’t figure out a way to save my radio stations on this app.

    • JRUIV

should save it automatically after you create it. I don’t know of any other way

      • Frawlz

It doesn’t… Pandora does, but for some reason it doesn’t and in some cases just replaces it with a suggested one. Weird.

  • I love the app and the service…my only complaint: I’d love to be able to read professional and /or user reviews and ratings of music, just like you see on the Play store. For some reason All Access doesn’t have these.

    • W. Paul Schenck

That would be a great addition to the app. I would also like to have access to all the other info about the songs inside the app, like writer, musicians, label, etc…

      • Agree completely. I’m old school, I miss album liner notes.

  • listener

I truly dislike the UI navigation on this app. If listening to a song on a streamed album, then want to change to a other songs on different playlists…it’s like 10 taps. Crazy hard when driving which has led mback to Pandora since they actually play songs from an artists playlist.

    • W. Paul Schenck

I only count 3, Back (1) , swipe right (2), playlists (3). I think you are looking for things not to like to justify your prejudice toward Pandora.

  • world_wide_wes

I seriously HATE two things about the app and they never get fixed. 1. Shuffle doesn’t work consistently. Sometimes I have shuffle on and my songs still play in order on a playlist. 2. Playlists can’t be viewed as a list! I dont give a damn about album art give me the option to show playlists as a list in text form and not a bunch of boxes with album art so I have to go scrolling for 10 extra seconds to find the playlist I want.

    • jscofi

i hate how nothing can be viewed as a list. tiles only

    • W. Paul Schenck

What version of the app are you using? I have a GNex (old tech according to DL) and my shuffle never plays in the order on the playlist. I also find the pics faster to recognize for the playlists on the phone screen than the tiny text when glancing down quickly (not while driving… I would never use my phone while driving..)

    • Malcolm Love

I noticed if you hit shuffle it still continues the list in order too. You have to clear the queue then hit shuffle. Kinda annoying.

  • miri

Update also includes new animations for starting radio stations, a header for the queue and refresh button.

  • The Jack of Spades ♠

I swear that screenshot came straight from my phone!

  • Jeremy Gentry

i wish they would fix it to where when i download music to my device for offline play it would “cache” to my sd card…i’m always running out of internal space and i get that stupid error then i have to remove a cd that i’m not listening to 🙁

    • zurginator

Indeed…. This keeps me from playing several games which require “local” music.

  • Austin_tacious

I love this feature. The radio station has been spot on since I started using it.

  • miri

I’m feeling lucky has been in the web player for over a month. Great to see it finally hit Anfdroid since it’s probably my new favorite feature.

  • kynyrd synyrd

does anyone else have an issue where google music will just start itself, or show up in notifications in a weird way? i’m experiencing this on a moto x.

    • JRUIV

Maybe you have Moto Assist turned on to start your music when you start driving.

      • kynyrd synyrd

wow, hadn’t thought of that… it’s my wife’s so i’ll definitely check when i get home. really appreciate the help!

        • Frawlz

Yup… freaked me out when it happened too… but turn it off and you should be fine.

Put beyondpod on there too… they fight for your speakers. It’s kinda funny.

  • Magnious

I would love if they just had a shuffle all songs button. I still don’t understand why they got rid of that feature. 🙁 Everythign is a “instant mix”, and it misses 3/4 of my favorite songs.

    • Suralin

Go to My Library > Songs > Shuffle All

    • Kanye East

You can go to Songs in My Library and at the top there is a “Shuffle all” option.

  • Zero

Off topic: anyone have the most recent .apk for the android twitter beta? >:3

    • Mayoo

I googled “most recent .apk for the android twitter beta” and hit the first link. It’s an Android Police link with 3 apk mirrors.

Took me probably less time than it took you to write this question which is indeed really off-topic.

    • imnotmikal

I had a hard time finding the most recent beta as well. Everything was coming up with an outdated beta. I’ve finally found the updated beta, here’s a mirror.Enjoy.

  • Mayoo

If I hit “I’m feeling lucky” in Canada, how are my chances it unlocks Music?

  • OhYeah!

This is the best use of the “I’m feeling lucky” I have seen yet. Comes up with some great music choices.

  • Jason Kahn

Did they fix the lock screen widget, at least on my GNEX when I skip to the next song the widget did not update the title or track until I cycled the screen on and off?

    • geoffking74

nope still happens on my moto x.

      • Jason Kahn

It’s weird that the bug seems to be selective, as my OG Nexus 7 works fine.

    • Jeremy Gentry

this still happens on my galaxy s4

    • imnotmikal

I’ve never had this issue on my Moto X.

      • Jason Kahn

I checked GNEX still has the issue, but my OG Nexus 7 does not have the issue.

  • chaoslimits

Now if they can gives a way to multi-select tracks…

  • coolsilver

I’d be happy if they sync the queue between phone and browser.

    • Terry West

    • tyguy829

and sync the chromecast queue between devices the way youtube does

    • michael arazan

I wish the play store recognized all access so when you click a song you don’t get a sample but the whole song and are able to add it to your playlist or library seemlessly

  • Chris

Google really needs to enable an option for a “dark mode”. Can’t use this when its ion my car dock at night. At least slacker and a little of pandora know the deal.

  • Jake

I’m about to drop my All Access subscription, because the “block explicit songs in radio” function doesn’t work. I don’t mind explicit lyrics when I’m listening alone or with other adults. However, when I’m in the car with my toddler and every fifth song is clearly not the “clean” radio version, I can’t rely on the service. Also, I find a bunch of albums that are for sale in the Play Store, but don’t even show up in the Google Music app because they’re not part of All Access. They should still appear in the Google Music app, but with the option to purchase if the artist/label refuses to allow them to be a part of All Access.

    • Jake

Also, the explicit lyrics “E” icon that’s present in the play store and in the web version of Google Music doesn’t appear in the Google Music app. Again, that sucks when I’ve got children with me and I want to play songs on-demand, but can’t be sure if it’s the clean version or not (can’t rely on the album art or the word “explicit” to be in the title either). If they’d only add a quick report button next to the thumbs up/down buttons I’d help them identify explicit lyric songs as they come up.

      • Chris Seward

Surely you realize that “clean” songs are just songs that have had their expletives removed, but are often not at all “clean” beyond that… I wouldn’t even play “clean” versions of explicit songs in front of younger kids because they often still have very adult content…

        • Jake

I agree that there are plenty of songs with content that’s inappropriate for young audiences, even with the expletives removed. There are also plenty of songs with acceptable content except for a random “sh**” or “f***” thrown in there in there to sound like natural adult conversation. For example, “who the f*** wants to die alone…” in fun’s Some Nights.

          • Jake

Even *most* of Mackelmore (sp?)’s Thrift Shop is okay with the expletives removed (the inappropriate stuff like “I got a big c***” at the beginning would leave some young kids clueless without the expletives). The chorus “this is f***ing awesome” is clear as day in Google Music.

  • a.d.AM

Im using it now. The selection is mad tight.

  • fartbubbler

he’s up all night to get lucky #DaftPunk

  • LucasMonroe

“I’m feeling lucky” playlist is now available on the web version of Google Music.

  • Curtis

I am just glad they are testing out new features. Whether this works well or not it is nice to see constant updates.

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

Wow I actually was an early part of the staged roll out for once, makes me feel lucky heh

    • Jeremy Gentry

      me too! 🙂

  • kepley

guessing the first song for me is get lucky

    • Curtis

I have been digging that whole album since it’s release!

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

We need an “I’m feeling lucky” button for Android Updates. “I’m feeling lucky! — *OS Downgraded to Cupcake*

    • PuzzleShot

Or better yet, “OS Upgraded to Android 4.6, for which no code base exists. You will receive your update when it becomes available”

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Not sure if I’d be excited about that or completely depressed

        • Weber

Verizon would never approve of that.

          • michael arazan

Hit the Verizon’s I’m Feeling Lucky button, and your Bill goes up, ba-da-bump

  • turdbogls

Assuming this is for “all access” subscribers?
just waiting for an ad supported “radio” over here
