Samsung Teases Galaxy S4 Device Shape and Outline Ahead of Launch?

image

Samsung just Tweeted the photo above which we are assuming is the outline of the new Galaxy S4. Or is it?

I don’t know what to say other than it looks identical to the Galaxy S3. It certainly doesn’t look like any of the renders or leaked photos we have seen over the last couple of days.

The Tweet says only this:

The countdown for #TheNextBigThing has begun. Who’s ready for the Global Unpacked Event on March 14?

Seeing anything different? Thoughts?

Just posted from a user on Samsung’s Facebook page.

  • Legacy1

I am assuming that because of the higher up label, that means no home button and the speaker might be at the bottom of the device instead.

    • Tim242

Ummm, the speaker you speak of is used to hear what a caller is saying. Are you suggesting that the phone would have to be held upside down to talk on? Gotta love the comments section. Never know what you’ll see.

  • ChristianJohnson

Samsung is trolling us with a picture of the GS3. Oh Samsung!

  • Ryan

    Little lighter

  • http://geniousatplay.blogspot.com/ Bikram Agarwal

After using Galaxy Nexus and seeing Nexus 4, I’m never going for a phone which has a home button at the bottom. It just looks ugly to me now. Who’s with me?

    • Woot

As a Galaxy Nexus user saddened by the fact that the ROM community is dwindling, I have to say I agree but will need to get over it. i’ll probably be getting a GS4.

      • http://www.getintonursing.com/ Jon

Oh if only HTC or Motorola would stand out by being THE manufacturer to go stock Android on all their devices.

  • fanboy1974

Samsung has one more year to keep the current design theme. Upgrading the screen resolution, display size, processor, camera, battery capacity and keeping the ability to swap batteries and sd cards will make it the number one selling Android device this year plastic and all. With all those upgrades I don’t consider it a “S” model. I just think Samsung is playing it safe.

Next year 1080p will be the norm and they will have to reinvent the Galaxy line. And the screen size will eventually have to stop. I love my Note 2 but I don’t think people want to carry a 5.5 inch mainstream phone; 5″ and that’s it. Leave the larger size to the phablets. I will be waiting for the Note 3 and I would be happy with a 1080p display, faster processor and S-Pen tweaks. I’m not asking for a total redesign.

  • MooleyBooleyTroll

    SAMSUNG FTL!!!

  • Rodeojones000

This line of phones has essentially become Android’s version of the iPhone. Meaning we’re probably going to have a nearly identical design as the S3 with only moderate upgrades in performance. And I’m sure Samsung will make the same mistake they’ve made with the S3 and Note 2 and put a physical home button on it.

    • Austin Warren

moderate upgrade in performance? You can’t be serious

  • NorCalGuy

Looks like they used a GNex to take that pic

    • Steve Benson

      ZING!

  • NorCalGuy

    The Galaxy s3s

  • fgonzo98

So all we care about is what it LOOKS like? LOL

    • Tim242

That’s not all. But, since I look at it so much, I want to enjoy the aesthetics.

  • Joe

More squared like the Note deuce, plz

  • John Ippolito

This is my not impressed font.

  • Ravi Rao

I’ve ordered my Nexus 4. Thanks!

    • Tim242

Based on a troll render from Samsung?

      • Austin Warren

He’ll be lucky if he even receives it before the release of the S4

        • Ravi Rao

I ordered a Nexus 4 on March 4th for my wife. Received it on March 6th. Shipping doesn’t take that long from the Play store.

  • Jared Tau

Is the earpiece located behind the samsung logo?

  • Marsg

Speaker grill missing? Could this be that new tech shown off last year that uses vibrations to transfer sound to the ear, if so then dwam

  • shmigga

Maybe its the rumored 4″ version?

  • Larry Page’s Left Testicle

It is the S3. I just held mine up for comparison. Same bezel, shape, everything. It isn’t showing light, proximity and camera sensors because the picture is darkened out by that side of the phone. Clearly they are just trying to confuse or intrigue people.

    • Liderc

Either you have a terrible monitor, or you’re blind. There is no speaker, there is no proximity/camera sensor. There’s a shadow, but it’s definitely not covering up all of that, especially the ear piece.

  • Bill

Didn’t Samsung release teasers last year before the Galaxy S3 launch, which were false? Samsung is just trying to build A LOT of hype for the Galaxy S4, but I honestly don’t know if the picture is just Samsung using the S3 to build confusion and suspense, or if its the S4, and they aren’t changing the design much. I honestly don’t think Samsung would keep the same design, but you never know.

  • jeans13

it’s the Samsung Galaxy S3^2 LOL

  • sean.yesmunt

Hopefully there is something crazy as far as software to spice things up, but I don’t see that happening.

  • Liderc

Looks no different. It’ll sell well, but it’s a failure because it’ll still have a physical home button and it’ll still feel plastic as hell.

    • ERIC REED

Over 20 million devices sold is a failure? Wish I had Samsung’s problems.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sjtilney Scott Tilney

Well at least I won’t be paying a bunch of money to upgrade my S3, Guess I’ll wait for the Nexus 5

    • flosserelli

If the N4 debacle was any indication, you will be waiting a long time even after you order it.

  • bob

OMG, this is blowing my mind! Who would have thought they would ever make a rectangle touchscreen phone with rounded edges??? Mind blowing.

on a serious note. it amazes me that anyone even pays attention to any of the designs at all. literally almost every single phone on the market looks 95% exactly the same. there’s no innovation whatsoever.

    • FAL_Fan

It is impossible to be “95% exactly the same”. It is either exactly the same or almost the same.

    • jb

What were you hoping for? A triangular phone with a circular screen?

    • Diablo81588

      You must be blind.

  • Trevor

I guess it’s probably cheaper for them just to release the GS3 again and not tell people. I’m sure enough will buy it anyway to make them some profit.

  • michael centeno

tired of the plastic toy feeling garbage!!! ffs no more plastic, ughh

  • interpol

If this is the GS4. Samsung don’t shut up and don’t take my money.

  • tiptoptommy

    There’s no earpiece speaker slot

  • EvanTheGamer

It’s the Samsung Galaxy S3-2? lol

I just hope the SGS4 will be different enough from it’s counterpart, in apperarence. Obviously it’ll OBLITERATE the SGS3 in specs. I just want it to LOOK different is all.

  • http://twitter.com/autonomous42 arc

Duh it’s the Samsung Galaxy S III 2!

    • tomn1ce

      Samsung Galaxy S IIIS

  • Butters619

…the next big thing is already here…

    • PhoenixPath

It’s like tomorrow. It never actually gets here, it just becomes today, which is boring as sh*t. We all know tomorrow will be better. :-P

  • jaybar

what if…samsung just took the GS3 chassis, and added a new 4.8″ 1080p screen, updated processor, and camera(s)?!!!!! i just blew my own mind

  • Tommy Thompson

    It’s the S3. http://i.imgur.com/TPqigPi.jpg It fits perfectly.

    • NexusPhan69

I had one tab set to this picture and one to the leaked picture and flipped between the two. I agree, this is 100% the GS3 outline.

    • http://twitter.com/deckerbm Benjamin Decker

Boosted the brightness in Photoshop of original image. Looks like the S3 without the earpiece, sensors, and FFC? http://i.imgur.com/W5OPvBL.png

      • http://www.facebook.com/imekp Ketan B. Parmar

        Where the hell is speaker?

      • michael arazan

Why not keep the same phone casing with better hardware underneath? That’s what I like about the Nexus phones now trying to keep same look for product branding.

    • http://twitter.com/misterE33 Mr E

They may just be messing with us, but it would be kind of smart to use the same or similar design of the S3. I’ve been seeing them everywhere, and it sold in huge numbers. Keeping a “consistent” design has worked for those other guys….

  • Chuckyg

Could the SAMSUNG name be the ear piece? You know, spelled out with chrome lined holes?

  • feztheforeigner

Exactly what I was expecting, basically a GS3. Samsung has so much recognition with their GS3 they wouldn’t dare compromise it.

Seems pretty obvious it would look like this…

  • Shane Belanger

Well, now we know it won’t look like the S3! There is no way they would tweet a pic of it 3 days before unpacked…

  • Chuckyg

Could the SAMSUNG name be the speaker?

    • Captain_Doug

That would actually be really cool.

    • https://twitter.com/paladaxar Paladaxar

You should probably submit a patent for that idea :)

      • dandar

Motorola already did it with Razr M. Patent invalid.

    • C-Law

I’m hoping for bone conduction instead of a traditional speaker but I’m sure that’s probably years off

      • snowblind64

Or earlier this year. The Kyocera Torque is the first phone in the US market with bone conduction technology.

        http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=3974

      • John Malin

I don’t think that would work well with a phone though. Don’t you have to be right on the bone for that to work?

    • Mike Reid

Could be. That’s the only notable difference from my GT-I9300.

On my GS3 the “SAMSUNG” name is lower and below a silvered set of holes for the earpiece speaker/receiver.

GS3 body on the GS4 is fine by me. GS3 is best selling Android phone ever (until GS4 likely surpasses), so why “fix” what isn’t broken… ?

Leave “fixing” what isn’t broken to the other guys, like HTC and Moto IMO.

  • &rew

    It’s the galaxy S3s

    • Austin Warren

      iGalaxy

    • sc0rch3d

i agree with what most people said below. It’s not what’s showing that’s intriguing…it’s what’s NOT showing (speaker grill, prox, light sensor, ff cam). hmm….

      • Marsg

And let’s not forget that extremely small and sexy bezel

      • JBartcaps

O yes, I’m so excited to see the light sensor on this phone, so excited

  • jaybar

    GS3

  • http://twitter.com/ITGuy11 Shawn Villaire

That would be a GS3, you have all been Samsunged!

  • TheWenger

Was hoping they’d show the bottom so we can see if the damn button is still there.

    • Rodeojones000

I’m sure they’ve made the mistake of including it.

  • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

If this has anything to do with the GS4 I’m in for a huge disappointment.

  • Bewara2009

Yes its not an edge to edge phone!

    • Captain_Doug

      /s?

    • Marsg

Still has an extremely small bezel, can’t wait to see the bottom half

    • Tim242

Edge to edge is a bad idea. Too many accidental screen presses

  • http://twitter.com/TheNintendo64 Drew
    • NexusPhan69

DL posted all the same pics earlier today. This is completely different. From Samsung direct and clearly only a render.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001443324671 Patrick Jewell

WOW cool…. A copy of the last design. I’m not shocked. It works well for Apple. Since Sammy wants to be Apple. “#1″

      • Austin Warren

        You must be new here.

        • Tim242

          Haha

    • C-Law

Not the same. The above has more side bezel like the gs3

    • Tim242

Why did you post s Verge link? That was posted on every blog, including this one.

  • Isaiah

It doesn’t look like a phone, there’s no visible ear piece. (so it doesn’t look like the SGS3)

    • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

Its a render, they are not always spot on, I mean remember when Samsung used iOS maps app in one of their renders….

      • Diablo81588

I’m sure that was on purpose.

        • http://twitter.com/fr8cture Eric

Yeah a dumb move at that…

  • matt@1996.com

I have no idea. I just wanted to be the first to comment.

    • Austin Warren

Typical of a 12 year old.

      • ERIC REED

You have to give him at least 16 going by the 1996 in the name. But I must admit I still chuckled at his comment!

        • Austin Warren

Oh wow fail on my math. Haha woops

          • Liderc

Typical of an 8 year old who failed math. =P

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Kells you’re joking right? That looks EXACTLY like the front of the leaked pics today. Look at where the top meets the side bezel. We need comparison shots.

    • Austin Warren

      Nop

    • C-Law

No, there is more side bezel in the above pic. Closer to gs3 than the leaked pic from today

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1443641660 Jason Lee

if you have a galaxy s3 hold it up and put in front of the picture above, its an identical match including bezel for the s3, the only difference is there is no speaker grill on the above picture and the samsung logo has been centralized in the above picture, this is just a render, it could suggest that the sgs4 will put the sgs3 in the shadow or something cryptic like that….

    • braymeck

http://i.imgur.com/8agrmom.png side by side…. i agree they look like the same phone

      • Marsg

Nah the top bezel is smaller on the the teaser, the Samsung logo is centered and the speaker grill is not there.

        • John Malin

Speaker grill could be black, or the same color as the rest of the phone, and isn’t showing well on the pic

  • Austin Warren

I’m sure they wouldn’t show a picture of the real device. Can’t wait til Thursday.

    • NexusPhan69

It looks to me to be a pretty poor render. Imagine if Samsung just quickly photoshopped something to match the leaks from today. The ultimate troll.

    • Captain_Doug

The Gnex outline was shown before.

      • NexusPhan69

Excellent point. But, this just seems too identical to the GS3 for Samsung to be hyping it up this much. I still think this is just a render. The Sammy logo looks really off to me.

        • Captain_Doug

To me Samsung is the Apple of Android. I won’t be surprised if they don’t do too much but sell it as a big thing. (no pun intended) Like relabeling all of the basic android features and throwing an “S” in front of it. I hope they surprise me but I don’t think they will. Hence, it makes sense that it looks the same(so far).

          • Austin Warren

This is hyped way too much to be a simple upgrade. I hope it’s something completely different come Thursday.

          • Captain_Doug

            I hope so too.

          • ERIC REED

I don’t need a new design, just give it some great upgrades and features and I would be happy. I don’t think the SIII is a bad looking phone at all. With the majority of phones I see in cases it doesn’t matter to me if it’s plastic or glass. And I like home buttons…Crazy right?

          • pd240

I hated the idea of a home button since I had a gnex but after getting the note 2 I have to admit that I actually like it. I don’t like the appearance but it’s convenient to wake the screen. Custom ROMS also made it tolerable with mapping a long press to access Google Now.

          • ERIC REED

I also like where Samsung places them. Very thin and at the very bottom of the phone. I enjoyed having it on my SIII. I am a big fan of their phone design’s.

          • Captain_Doug

Pretty crazy, but to each his own. ;D

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1443641660 Jason Lee

to be fair the s3 is not a bad looking phone, it clearly wasn’t so bad, nearly 50 million people bought on, which was serious competition for apple, however i do feel that a redesign is in order, i don’t think it has to be drastic, but just not another galaxy s3 looking device, there is a lot of variants of the s3, and with the note 2 and the note 8.0 both looking like enlarged versions of the galaxy 3 a refresh in design and tech is in order, i also like the home button 2 sometimes when the screen buttons freeze its nice to have a physical button to go bk to home, i would however like the button to be moved and also used as a dedicated camera button as well that would be great, 18 more hours to go :-)

        • PhillipCun

didn’t samsung say their exterior design won’t change that much. this will be good for their branding to help customers easily identify their products from other Androids.
