Or just avoid buying the models that have this ‘tech’ in them? My dad worked for GM for several years, and although I own a Dodge vehicle, I still have some dealing with GM because of him working there. Car manufacturers usually make several models of the car/truck for a sort of choice. Its like with Ford and Microsoft Sync. I’ll avoid any vehicle with Sync in it, just like I’ll avoid any GM-made vehicle with AT&T’s laughable LTE. (well, their service is laughable in general when I finally ditched them)

When I plug in my phone, either to my laptop or to the car’s USB port, my two connection options are MTP or PTP. No Mass to be found, unless I’m seriously missing something in my searches. Verizon GS3 running stock JB 4.1.1

It is against their ToS. I’m actually agreeing with Tim242 for a change.

Just because they haven’t hassled you doesn’t mean they like it. If you do it enough and use up enough data, they WILL say something to you, if not just terminate your account/line/service.

Straight talk is great if you really don’t use mobile data but in a pinch and live mostly on wifi for your smartphone.

I agree. I think that would be best for consumers. However, I don’t think that will happen because the car manufacturers have already started partnering up with Microsoft, Apple, Google and the phone manufacturers, signing exclusivity agreements, and developing proprietary platforms. There’s too much money in keeping things proprietary, so they won’t make a universal standard until that proprietary well runs dry.

I’ve streamed all kinds of videos from a sleuth of websites: break, dailymotion, youtube, google+, facebook, vine, and they’ve NEVER harassed me. ever.. it’s worked great for me and my wife. and I consider myself an average user.. i’m not downloading roms or streaming netflix 24/7 but I do use any app I want for a period of time that a reasonable person would.

YouTube is in fact prohibted. That is streaming video. I have seen many cases where they harass and cancel over YouTube. Regardless, they have far too many limits on their unlimited data plan. If it suits you, great. But I doubt it fits the needs of most DL readers. It makes me cringe every time people talk about or reccomend switching to StraightTalk. Most people have no idea how restricted it is and how they harass people.

I think OnStar still has benefits though. It can detect if you’re in a crash and call OnStar automatically so they can call 911 and I think the service includes roadside assistance, but I’m not sure. Your smartphone can’t do that. (at least not without some sort of integration)

Exactly. GM is still pushing OnStar. Which does everything your smartphone does 1/10 as well. And 1/10 as quickly. And costs money.

No one wants OnStar. They are so pathetic when they call you begging to renew it after the free months expire. I felt sorry for them. It was sad.
