Motorola X Phone Said to be a “Game Changer” With Software Never Seen Before in a Phone

motorola x phone1

Oh that Motorola X Phone, it’s hypebeastability has somehow evaded us over the last couple of weeks even though it’s the most anticipated phone of the last year. After the wild rumor surfaced suggesting that it would be available on all carriers as well as the Play store for an insanely low price, we were thirstier than ever for more info. But then once Motorola either trolled us all or slipped up completely by listing a job opportunity for a director of product management for the X Phone team, we haven’t heard much. Well, until now, thanks to a rumor out of Australian electronics site, SmartHouse

According to sources of theirs, who claim to have spoken with Telstra CTO Hugh Bradlow on the matter, the X Phone will be a “game changer.” It’s supposed to be a “real breakthrough” that will put pressure on Samsung and Apple, something no one in the smartphone industry has done in a couple of years.

What sounds most intriguing, is the mention of Google having worked on this device for a “long time,” so that they could pack in software features and capabilities that are not available on Samsung Galaxy phones or the iPhone. This new software “pulls together Google services like no other manufacturer has done in the past.”

Their sources also claim that the phone will be unveiled in May at Google I/O and will then hit retail shelves in July. This matches up to previous rumors.

Brainstorming software that has never been seen before sounds like an impossible task, so I’m not going to even attempt it. What I will do, is start counting the days to I/O, in hopes that Google pulls out the device we have all been waiting for.

Thoughts?

I just did a Google search on recent patents… Maybe it will be a 5.5 inch phablet with a virtual keyboard…im rocking the DROID 4… Instead of having the physical keyboard a slide out virtual would be epic..according to the link it would also be able to slide shut with the screen on the outside in a tablet position. http://9to5google.com/2012/07/13/google-patent-details-hybrid-notebooktablet-with-virtual-keyboard/

  • Chris Hollenbeck

Maybe they are bringing the Netscape browser back…

    • ohdoctor

You do know that netscape transitioned to firefox right?

      • Chris Hollenbeck

        Yes.
Seems like it’s been forever since Iv’e had this icon on my computer….

  • Cgmartin33

If it has blur and is on Verizon…I will pass. I am done with Verizon bloatware and blur is just depressing. I have it on my RAZR and Bionic and if it wasn’t for my unlocked Gnex that gets updates through developers light years before VZW gets their heads out of their asses, I would have given up by now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bhain3s Brandon Haines

I have a feeling it could have the technology to display a keyboard on any surface and possibly a kickstand… Any other ideas of groundbreaking innovation

    GIVE ME NOW!

  • Famouz Starz

just when i thought my spending was going to cease!

  • topherct

I’ll believe it when I see it. Until then, I still think it has MotoBlur

    • Chris-topher

Motoblur isn’t bad at all since Google acquired Motorola. Its by far the most stock UI, which is definitely a plus. With that said, I am hoping the X phone is unlocked and pure Android. Hopefully shipping with Key Lime Pie..

  • EvanTheGamer

The mythical X Phone is tempting, but my money is for the SGS4!

You get the “MOST HILARIOUS FALSE INFORMATION” Award!

      • Jordan

        I think that’s more of a wish list than a “spec-sheet”

        • Huh

Charging from 10 feet away? huh?

          • Verizon

Wireless charging that doesn’t require you to place your phone on a stand or some kind of pad. The ability to charge your phone just by being in the same room as your charger. It will come eventually, but I’d like to see it sooner rather than later.

          • arturo_bandini

There’s no way this wouldn’t cause new and exciting forms of cancer.

        • Verizon

          Very much so.

      • Verizon

Hmmmm, the word “or” in several of the listed items didn’t give away the whole “wish list” aspect of my comment? Really? I offer you the “FAILURE TO COMPREHEND WHAT YOU’RE READING” award.

  • trbasil

    X-blur, coming this summer

    • Tom Z

I’m not so sure about that… My Droid Razr HD Maxx is pretty blur free.

  • Lte_Addict

i can’t wait, forget the htc one, and the s4, i want this x phone. its about time google has FULL control over a phone, not halfway like a nexus. i believe with this x phone that google will regain control over android and show the other oems how it’s done! go xphone

  • Steve Benson

Where the F are you people getting this skin crap? There’s been no mention of Google creating a “skin” for this phone.

  • SexciiP

Will this X-phone live up to all the hype, or will the Galaxy S-IV reign supreme over all smartphone devices??

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

you people make it so hard for me to buy a note 2 and be happy.

  • MikeCiggy

So I think we can definitely assume this is no Nexus. But a skin designed by Google is something that could be very cool. A definite requirement for the phone for me is an unlockable bootloader. I do hope something like this comes out sold in the play store for Verizon because i’ll buy it so FAST

    • Steve Benson

Don’t hold your breath for a Verizon phone being sold in the play store. Not going to happen.

      • LionStone

Because it’ll be ‘sold out’ anyway….oohhh!!

      • MikeCiggy

I’m just looking for the price that it comes from Google Play in, if Verizon sells it at full retail for the same price as Google Play that works as well.

  • Jon

Shut up, and TAKE MY MONEY!

  • SexciiP

May 24th is only a couple days away. I think I can hold out a little while longer. I’m just mainly interested in seeing how “revolutionary” this new Xphone is gonna be.

  • dcdttu

Can it be an attractive phone? That’s something never seen in a Motorola phone before.

But seriously, I hope this thing is as awesome as the hype. Wonder if it will be a Nexus? Will the ‘new’ features be AOSP, or a skin? So many questions!

  • http://www.facebook.com/smartguy0101 Anthony James

I’m hoping it has a desktop mode, so when you put it in a dock and connect hdmi to it it will look like Chrome OS, with full mouse support and all.

  • ROB

    My guess is WebOS..2..

  • Corey Foltman

hopefully game changing means it comes with a dock and wireless charger either in box or releases the same day as the phone.

  • Andrey Feldman

I just hope the N4 will be able to run said software.

  • Geoff Rodrigue

The last time I believed this from Motorola, I ended up owning an Atrix.

    • ROB

and a lot more bought Bionics…

      • Steve Benson

Feel bad for all the poor suckers that jumped on the Bionic.

        • http://twitter.com/GwSpaulding gsDroid

The Bionic got a bad rap. I love my Bionic. It is still an attractive, stable, fast device that was trashed unfairly.

  • Corey Foltman

using their patent that has mic’s and speakers on the top and bottom so it doesnt matter which way you hold the phone?

  • Tyson184

Are we really looking for ‘game changing software’ or do we really want ‘game changing hardware’???

  • cancerous_it

I just want a up to date spec’ed (processor, ram, screen, etc) motorola phone w/ an unencrypted and hackable/unlockable boot loader. moto wouldn’t be in the mess that they are in if they would just listen to customers. it’s pretty simple. hopefully the x phone can get that right. the game changing stuff is just gravy.

  • htowngtr

If they can actually sell a LTE phone on Play Store for under $500 even, that would definitely be a game changer. You can’t buy anything new for even $499 anymore (Nexus 4 isn’t a multi-carrier LTE phone).

  • mec

not to be a buzz kill, but the never before seen software/google service integration is likely this unified messaging platform. voice/talk/email/text etc. a huge step forward, but i dont know that this gets classified as revolutionary, or whatever hype words they choose to use in the lead up.

if everything turns out to be real, i doubt the hardware will be anything particularly novel…. i expect the next iteration in high end phone (like a maxx HD), with the newest OS, and this unified messaging.

IMO thats the most plausible scenario.

  • Red

I just hope community ROMs don’t suck for this phone

    • KleenDroid

If the phone is fully unlockable you will have nothing to worry about.

If its not… Just more of the same.

  • George Fayad

IF this phone turns out like the rumors, I will be purchasing on launch day. Guaranteed.

  • http://twitter.com/RavnosCC RavnosCC

So wait, we’re relying on Motorola to “wow” us by pulling together Google services? … fool me once, shame on you…

    • rocs_macho

Fool me once, shame on……. Shame on you. Ya fool me once, you can’t get fooled again.

  • overclock

I want a big battery like my Maxx. That’s what matters the most to me. Quad core, 1080p would be nice too, but not necessary.

    • Dru

      I want a phone that doesn’t suck – there’s that

      • hkklife

        What I am hoping for:
Stock KLP or JB Blur-style light tweaks that are very AOSPish
Quality camera hardware (at least HTC/iPhone/level)
Maxx-style battery (or bigger would be even better)
        5″ 1080P screen with a tiny bezel
        S4 Pro or better
32Gb internal storage + microSDHC slot. A 64Gb option would be even better
Typical quality Moto radios and build
MicroHDMI port (not MHL) for a future Webtop mode
LTE/CDMA version sold directly via Play Store contract-free for $500
Updates come directly from Google and bypass VZW’s “testing”

        What we will probably get:
        4.8″ 1080P screen
JB at launch with KLP available “in the coming months”.
16Gb internal storage w/ no expansion slot
        RAZR HD-size battery
        $299 on contract from Verizon
The same old delayed/broken testing process for updates
A variety of special edition colors, including red, white, and blue versions to coincide with its July launch. Pink, purple, and platinum versions to follow later, followed by a special employee VZW red edition.
The same mediocre Motorola camera hardware as usual, just with a new noise-filled 13Mp sensor

        • Steve Benson

Verizon will not get this phone if it’s only sold through the Play Store.

        • Dru

          X-Phone MAXX

  • Ser Ponce

Not sure if this is a hardware thing, but would love to see deep integration with Google Voice, similar to what Sprint has. That has so much potential but development seems to have fizzled out, as far as I know no new developments in a year or more, right?

    • r0lct

I believe it’s more a carrier problem. Hopefully with Google going direct this will come to pass.

  • Q’s

If everything about this phone ends up being true… I will cry, cry sweet tears of joy. Because I will be kicking Verizon Wireless to the curb!

  • RicoDelicioso

$350, Off contract. 32gb. Verizon. That’s all I want to see.

  • KleenDroid

The only thing I don’t see them saying is if the phone will be unlocked and stock. To me none of the other innovation will get me to buy the phone if its not.

I want a replacement for my Nexus, not just another locked down Motorola phone.

Innovation is nice and all but I hope Moto doesn’t continue to drop the ball at the 50 yard line.

  • trophynuts

still not drinking the koolaid yet. I just hope this isn’t a rushed device. I’d rather them not show it at I/O and get it perfect and then just hold a solo event for it.

    • Austin Warren

How do we know how long they’ve been working on it? We don’t. Could have been years.

      • trophynuts

yeah i know. I’m just saying i hope they get it right. But i doubt years. Maybe “year” i bet they didn’t start working on it until after the Moto buy out was complete

        • George Fayad

They probably had the concept and design for the phone long before they purchase Motorola Mobility. That was just a piece of the puzzle.

    • Steve Benson

Man I’m drinking the koolaid already. Spilled it all over my shirt. The Kool Aid man just busted through my living room wall. Oh Yeah!

  • droidarmy

Insider source tells me this phone will be unbelievable, stay tuned ill have some more info shortly.

  • brando56894

Can’t. Wait. Until. Google I/O. Must. Have. XPhone. Now!

  • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Also, just as an aside to the DL team: that image above puts the wrong image on this device. Even if it is not everything it is hypebeasted to be, it absolutely will not sloppy, juvenile, or sketchy, all of which the above image brings to mind. I’m certain that the intent was edgy, but I’m sure there’s a better font for that, isn’t there?

  • Chris King

By the way this is worded it sounds like Google going to get Motorola the upper hand so they can get some more market share, which I’m cool with a monopolynever helps anybody

  • steve30x

Lol I’m not counting on it too much, look how this site obsessively posted similar posts over a phone that was gonna be a monster… Dare I say the bionic 0_o

    • KleenDroid

We want Motorola to give us a phone. They have not done so since the OG. But we continue to hold out hope.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adamtruelove Adam Truelove

So this implies a non-stock Android phone doesn’t it? That is unfortunate.

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Well, maybe possibly yes and no. If they use apps (launcher, Now, widgets) to add this incredible functionality but leave the stock software intact, you could conceivably “turn off” the skin, a feature that has been suggested many times over the years. Also, it would simplify and greatly speed OS updates, in addition to allowing speedy and efficient “skin app” updates that add features, functionality, and polish without needing to bother with carrier approvals.

  • br_hermon

I’m looking forward to this but I’ll be curious to see how Google markets this thing. They’ve pushed the Nexus brand hard in a lot of their commercials, though not all (ie Google Now and Maps). Google has been known for putting a lot out there but not really having the universal branding or appearance behind it. They really don’t tout “Android” near as much as “Google” and “Nexus” is fairly strong. They finally started to reel in their look with the Holo design scheme. And they’ve tried to improve their content distribution by placing it all under the “Google Play” umbrella. But clearly with all these different brands, it’s quite clear they still have considerable room to improve.

They should really brand this as a Nexus device if they want to A. avoid further consumer confusion and B. strengthen their brand amongst consumers. Failure to do so will only weaken any kind of recognition that they (should be) trying to establish. The only other acceptable way to market this, and this is still a reach, is to sell it as a Google Play device, given it’s already loosely established roots. But again it conflicts with the Nexus brand name and may prove to be a turning point in a new direction in marketing. We will see…

  • adam king

I wonder if this “pulling together of google software” could possibly be related to google glass. Pushing an amazing phone and an innovative accessory could be a good idea. Guess we just have to wait and see.

    For the record, “X Phone” is a working title. I’m guessing that THIS will be the long-awaited DROID5. {{-_-}}

    • HotRodJohnson

DROID would imply only a Verizon phone, and you know how much Google like pure Android experience on Verizon.

      • http://twitter.com/JohnnyACE562 GRAND MASTER SEN$Ei {{-_-}}™

        Okay then. I guess that’ll be Verizon’s version of this phone. {{-_-}}

Ehhh…it just sounds to good to be true. =(

  • Bionic

The phone is currently undergoing an external rebuild but the specs and internals are the same as before.

    • hkklife

Screen still 5″? MicroSD still present? I hope the rebuild does not equal a Bionic-style delay!

      • Bionic

        No delay. Yes sd card.

  • droidarmy

This will be amazing tech and you all better be excited.
