New Samsung Galaxy S4 Render Spotted, Shows Love to the Metal Community

Galaxy S4 Render Metal

No, not that metal community. Recently, a new “render” of Samsung’s next flagship device, the Galaxy S4, was released to the Internet. We can pretty much say that this is not the phone, but it does suit itself as a nice conversation piece that would look lovely on my coffee table. Not only do we get to dissect the look of the actual device, but we get to look at all of those pretty specs at the same time. We will list the specs below, and then offer up why or why not this will work for the Galaxy S4.

Supposed specs:

  • Android 4.2 w/ TouchWiz UI
  • 5″ 1080p Full HD Super AMOLED+ Display
  • 2GHz A15 Exynos 5450 quad-core processor
  • 2GB DDR3 RAM
  • ARM Mali T658 GPU
  • 13MP rear-facing camera
  • 2MP front-facing camera
  • Li-Ion 3,100 mAh battery
  • 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options
  • Removable SD card slot
  • Gorilla Glass 3
  • 4G LTE
  • Dedicated camera button
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Front-facing speakers

So, let’s get the quick ones out of the way. Android 4.2 “Jelly Bean” is hopefully a given at this point, since it has been out for almost a year now and Samsung will no doubt want to launch the device with the latest version of the Android OS. TouchWiz UI is of course, also a given. We have heard that Samsung would incorporate their new Exynos 5 Octa chip into the S4, but maybe it’s not ready for release? Given we are expecting this phone sometime in Q2, it’s hard to imagine that we wouldn’t see their newest SoC technology come aboard this device. So, let’s scratch the 2GHz 5450 quad-core for now.

A 13MP camera would make plenty of sense, given all OEM’s are currently in the process of upgrading their sensor offerings. We know HTC has something big planned, as well as Motorola, who has been sort of absent in that department in terms of picture quality.

The one spec on here that I am really hoping for is that 3,100mAh battery. We can’t enjoy these overly-powerful devices for a full day if we don’t have a sufficient power supply. That size, coupled with some battery-friendly technology from either the Octa or this Exynos 5450 would suit it well. Not that there isn’t already a manufacturer throwing huge batteries in phones, see Moto’s RAZR MAXX HD, but I think you know what I mean. HTC has been throwing in rather puny batteries in their devices for sometime and it’s starting to become an issue for potential buyers.

The two “specs” on here that rub me funny are the dedicated camera button and the front facing speakers. Samsung has been fortunate enough to find a design that sells to the public, thanks to millions of dollars in advertising, but the S3 sells nonetheless. I wouldn’t expect to see huge changeups in hardware design if Samsung wants to keep their buyers happy. To see this example in use, see Apple’s iPhone. People aren’t looking for drastic hardware changes. I think Samsung knows this and we can expect to see back-facing speakers on the S4 as well as this camera button being omitted from their design. Plus, the above image does give off a metal look. It should be safe to say that metal won’t be found on anything Samsung unless it’s a washer and dryer.

As always, this is me just rambling and I would love to hear what you think of this render. Again, just to clarify, we by no means think this is the device. The phone itself looks quite nice, so let’s hear your thoughts down below.

Cheers ItsASamsung and George!

  • Mike

Anyone else really hoping the camera button makes it back? With big screens sometimes its bloody awkward to take a picture with the screen. Probably #1 feature from my OG I wish would’ve never left…

  • http://twitter.com/DrewCPU Drew

I’m just trying to figure out how the camera button can be both “Multi-Purpose” and “Dedicated”.

  • http://twitter.com/xPARASPOLOx Anthony

    DEDICATED CAMERA BUTTON??? Awesome!!!
    FRONT FACING SPEAKERS??? Awesome!!!
    3100mah BATTERY??? Awesome!!!

    I want this phone!

  • EngineerGA

I certainly hope the new models do indeed have front-facing speakers. I have to turn my speaker all the way up on my Note 2 to hear anything because it projects the sound away from me. Meanwhile, everyone behind my phone gets blasted. That is super weird to me. The speakers on my stereo don’t face away from me when I listen to it. Why do they on my phone?

  • Liderc

About the only phone I’d replace my GNexus with. Looks very nice and front facing speakers makes sense after all this time of cupping my hands around my speaker to here videos heh.

  • Mike

If samsung built this exact device, I might consider a skinned device.

  • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

    No physical home button!!!

  • Philip A. Kaiser

Guess we don’t get a headphone jack. Lol! Guy forgot to Photoshop a headphone jack. Also the reflection is wrong on the right photo. The angle doesn’t show the charge port properly.

    • JoshGroff

Bluetooth headphones are the way of the future! (Yeah, Ok)

  • duke69111

I love the look of this phone and would love to have front facing speakers and a small dedicated camera button.

  • Nick Adamany

    Exynos 5 Octa runs a PowerVR SGX 544 MP3, not a Mali T658.

    • Nick Adamany

Protip, 5450 is the actual name of Exynos 5 Octa.

  • brkshr

Who ever made that needs to work for Samsung! That phone is just beautiful & the specs are awesome, but at the same time reasonable/do-able.

  • Shane Redman

    XPhone?

  • Captain_Doug

This is like 2 months old.

  • Brent Cooper

Will the SIV have a s-pen? because I dont want a 6.3 inch phone just to be able to have the s-pen.

    Thanks :)

  • Bigwavedave25

PLEASE for the love… let us have those FRONT SPEAKERS!!!

    • EngineerGA

This is my feeling exactly. It is stupid that I have to cup my hand on the back to hear my Galaxy Note 2’s sound when watching videos.

  • viewthis66

i would welcome speakers on the front…

  • mitch

    Bluetooth 5.0 doesn’t exist.

    • Bigwavedave25

Ha! Yeah, I thought 4.0 just came out…

    • rodney11ride

neither did gorilla glass 2 last year now gorilla glass 3… im assuming its all on its way!

  • http://www.facebook.com/TXmadeTXpaid Samson Everett

    What about the octa?

  • http://twitter.com/UtopianSnucka Eric

I may be in the minority here, but I’d LOVE to see a high-end phone like this with both the dedicated camera (or multi-function) button and front facing speakers. Also, if they really actually did ditch the home button that would be quite remarkable – that render looks like a roided-up GNex, very purty!

But yeah, no… I don’t buy this render for a second.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tylerjehills Tyler James Edward Hills

    DEM SPECS DOH!

  • Tom

    Looks like an HTC.

  • MichaelFranz

its like samsung and htc had a love child…the back render look like a GNEX back with the way the bottom almost looks lipped

  • mechapathy

    Sexy.

  • Brian Parkerson

I personally think this is one hell of a design…I like it, and would probably go with this device over the Google X with given specs.

    • KOBALT

Only if it has the Octa.

  • Butters619

    Looks like an HTC phone.

    • Bionicman

lol that was my thought exactly. i think the person who created this has HTC envy.

  • Austin Warren

    Speakers on the front…Beast!

  • Big_EZ

That is not the S4. Want to know how I know? That’s a sexy phone, thats why. Samsung has the best phones, but lack in the build quality and design (however this is subjective). If this were in fact the new S4 with metal, they would have the best software, equal build quality as Motorola, and the best styling, there would be no reason to even consider any other manufacturer.

    • Austin Warren

My Note 2 is sexy. and durable. Until i dropped it into my pool yesterday…

      • Big_EZ

My Note 2 looks okay, but definitely not sexy. It’s also no where near as durable as my old Motorola phones. Even with the crappy plastic build it’s going to be the best phone until the Note 3.

  • New_Guy

That is one sexy looking render.

    • EvanTheGamer

      AYE!

    • http://profiles.google.com/kstagg Kevin Stagg

      I’d tap that.

  • EvanTheGamer

And…if those specs are to be true, yep, the SGS4 will definitely be my next phone!

Oh HELL yeah………….and let the anticipation commence!

    • Brian Parkerson

Really, even with a 3100mah battery? I’d prefer a removable battery but deal breaker? Not for me at 3100mah.

      • EvanTheGamer

Yeah, you’re right. I sorta got ahead of myself. But even at 3100mah, the battery will still run out eventually. I gotta have power! Lots and lots of power! Gotta stay connected!

        • Brian Parkerson

A device can have all the best specs possible but without power, useless…your right!

          • EvanTheGamer

Wait…are you being sarcastic? I can’t tell. lol

        • http://twitter.com/xPARASPOLOx Anthony

It’s like buying your dream car but only getting 7 gallons of gas a day lol. You aren’t going to go very far. Haha. But just charge it when you can. While driving, at work, at home and you should be fine. It is a 3100mah battery after all. I have an off brand 3080 slim in my GS3 that fits with the original back and it lasts pretty much all day.

          • EvanTheGamer

I go to Disneyland quite a bit(among other places; all day sorta adventures) where I have no place to charge my phone so a few extra spare batteries will go along way.

Also, yeah, I should be enjoying Disneyland or whatever and not be on my phone, but you know what…waiting in long lines is extremely annoying and boring so my phone is the only thing that keeps me occupied, ie, makes waiting in line less boring. haha

  • Detonation

Fake. There’s no home button (Verizon needs it to put their branding on)

  • Asimoalex

Looks like a og HTC had sex with a galaxy phone and this popped out

  • http://them3blog.wordpress.com/ Abel

I think I came a little…. @Timotato:disqus I would personaly like most of this device.. included the dedicated shutter Heck Ill even allow for those front speakers as long as Samsung -kills it home and hardware keys with fire!!!-

looking forward to this and the Motorola X

  • http://www.facebook.com/edgar.gordon Edgar Gordon

TAKE MY MONEY. Dream phone. Onscreen buttons sexy ass design big ole battery killer specs

    • EvanTheGamer

Agreed!!!! My next phone right there above!

    • KOBALT

I got on-screen buttons on my Nexus7 and I hate them. It wastes the screen. I don’t understand why people like them so much. My Note2 capacitive’s are awesome and don’t interfere with the screen size.

      • Simon Belmont

Just one reason why I like CM10/CM10.1. You can use “expanded desktop” mode.

That is just a fancy way of saying “hide the soft buttons and notification bar.” Good times.

        • KOBALT

I don’t want to have a ‘mode’ all the time. I like my desktop and app drawer big too. On-screen’s are ridiculous.

      • http://www.facebook.com/adam.schadt.14 Adam Schadt

They can fit things like speakers on the bezel or they can make the bezel smaller.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Dye/575025297 Mike Dye

I so hope this is realish. Front facing speakers like the note 10.1 and nexus 10 would be awesome

    • Justin Winker

Agreed… After all this time of using devices with speakers on the back, you don’t realize how much sense it makes to actually have them facing the same way as the screen until you have a device that does just that.

      • http://www.facebook.com/adam.schadt.14 Adam Schadt
        • Justin Winker

Great concept.. I hope some manufacturers begin to put speakers on the front of devices.

          • http://www.facebook.com/adam.schadt.14 Adam Schadt

Ya, in ways which makes it look cool

  • jer85008

I’ll wait for the x-Phone. All Moto needs is a good camera and they are set.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Thomas-L-Wolfe/100000451164661 Thomas L. Wolfe

Look at the “ng” on the back. It’s not even the proper font or lined up right. Looks horrible.

  • WiseGuy420

5 inch display? Geez…things prettu much a PDA. This aint Texas, big isnt always better. Who knows tho, I said the same poop about the 4.8 display on my S3 and it doesnt bother me at all…we’ll see. Rest of the specs look BADASS!!! 13MP camera! YES!!

    • Austin Warren

Bigger the better. Especially when it’s faster.

      • Austin Warren

Oh my go….”That’s what she said”

  • DanWazz

Looks like the GSIV by HTC

  • Brian Inglut

I want this devic. Love the idea of front facing speakers like their tablet. Def won’t be Bluetooth 5,

  • http://twitter.com/Droid_soldier Paul Devey

I can’t see Samsung willingly getting rid of their beloved home button.

    • michael arazan

Has to be fake if there is no Home button, if Samsung was getting rid of the home button they would of done so on the Note 2 just for more screen space

    • flosserelli

Agreed. Otherwise where would Verizon slap their hideous logo?

    • CrackMonkey

The Galaxy Nexus didn’t have a Home button. Maybe Samsung has seen the error of their ways. The do read comments and if enough people have complained about the Home button perhaps they have removed it. This picture is pretty freaking awesome so I hope that is the S4.

      • http://www.facebook.com/erusha Erusha Tiranagama

galaxy nexus didn’t have a home button cos its a nexus device. Google said no home button, so no home button. And also, for every person who complains about the physical home button, there is a person who supports it. Personally, i prefer the physical home button.

I’m on an s3 running cm10.1 I went a month using the navbar. I’d hit the home button when going for the spacebar, i couldnt switch on the screen with the physical home button cos i disabled the hardware keys, always had to reach for the power button. Thing that bugged me the most though. the wasted screen space. A significant portion of the screen at the bottom was lost.

Maybe its cos i was doing this on a phone made to be used with the hardware keys, so it’s not optimised for the on screen buttons. But everything looks a little weird to me.

  • Jonathan Bunch

    Looks…meh specs…nice!

  • bakdroid

    Octa-core or GTFO! :P

  • randompsychology

    There is no Bluetooth 5.0…?

    • Dane Carpenter

That was my thinking. 4.0 just came out a couple years ago. And is finally being implemented into mobile devices.

    • Sam_K

I had the same reaction and that’s what’s got me thinking that this is fake.

    • http://twitter.com/jeffmschmitt Jeff Schmitt

Actually December of 2012 new specs and standards were released by Bluetooth.

  • Sirx

“Front-facing speakers” make as much sense as “headphone jack being on the bottom”. How neither have really caught on in phones is a complete mystery to me.

Also, that render IS pretty slick!

    • duke69111

I think the placement of the headphone jack would be tough to determine. While I like it on the bottom for placing it in my pocket, when I am playing a game or such with headphones it would be nice to have it on the side as it gets in the way, however that would not work well for placing it in your pocket, Oh well.

  • JordanMcRae

    4.2 hasn’t been out for almost a year….?

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

4.1 has – I guess that’s what Tim meant. Either way, still Jelly Bean ;)

      • ScottLaRock

and Samsung doesn’t advertise their phones with Touchwiz anymore, so you know this is FAKE!

        • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

It was always going to be fake. This is just hopeful.

I’m much more likely to buy whatever Motorola/Google are working on anyway, so meh.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      Jelly Bean in general, yeah.

  • http://twitter.com/Kenny_Larson Kenny Larson

This render looks HTC-esq to me.

  • http://twitter.com/AMiller31 A.Miller

    Love the look of that.

    • Devon Delcourt

      Go Green!

      • Butters619

        Go White!

      • StaeeSuxx

        NO

  • http://twitter.com/CrHine17 Core. E.

    want. now.

  • teevirus

What no NFC? Guess I’ll be waiting until the GS5.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Technically, if we’re making jokes about phones not having NFC, let’s call it the Galaxy S4S. ;)

      • Justin Winker

        Or the Galaxy S 5.

      • CopierITGuy

AKA the 5th generation Galaxy S.

      • ScottLaRock

AKA: The New Galaxy (Same as last years, but just a tad better)

    • Mike

Honestly, the novelty of NFC has all but worn off for me. The Beam feature is neat…but I could live without it.

      • http://twitter.com/RickyBlancoVA Ricky Blanco

I wouldnt call NFC a “novelty”. There are so many uses for it. It is a shame that android has to wait for ifone to adopt certain technologies (that android already has) before they are considered practical…

        • DC_Guy

Yep. I LOVE using NFC for Google Wallet. I can’t wait for more merchants to install the readers. It is so quick and convenient.

    • Guest

I wouldnt call NFC a ‘novelty’. There are so many practical uses for it. Too bad android has to wait for ifone to adopt certain technologies before it becomes practical…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001812257218 Daniel Perkins

    holy crap those specs

    • EvanTheGamer

I second, third, fourth, fifth that!

      • cizzlen

        1, 2, 3, FO’ FIFFFF!
