I struggled with that too, but apparently, a true haiku does not count syllables, but rather counts "ons". This is like a separate sound. For example Droid: Dr | o| ee| d where Droid is just 2 syllables. Truthfully, I'm not certain I did that right, but I am certain about the 5/7/5 referring to ons, not syllables.
