The design of an app is something Google has been very attentive to. The current Gmail app, in some ways, sets a good example for ICS+ based apps. Sure, it’s not as flashy looking as this iOS release, but Google is just adhering to Apple’s (different) standard for design on their devices.

Let’s be honest, there are many ICS+ apps that are darned-good to look at and are designed with great consideration and aesthetic.

Both platforms care about functionality, it’s just the presentation that differs a little bit.

I’m actually already tired of the flat rectanglish graphics and bright primary colors aesthetic, TBH. I blame Win8.

All GMail apps are basically useless to me; since 80% of the time I have to reply to my apps’ customer emails and I have a few canned responses in GMail; which only works in gmail.com and no app supports that yet. So, the apps are useful only for deleting other notification mails. Looking forward to the day when “Canned response” will be supported in the app.

This is related to the acquisition of sparrow, a popular iOS email app that google acquired. The team was integrated and produced this app. I am sure they used a lot of the same code and it was therefore easier to release the iOS version first. I would expect an Android version to follow.

I’m jealous of the new features, but not of the look they gave it. It falls more in line with the iOS(read: old and stale) design.
I hope they add the features but keep with the android design guidelines.

The real question is: Does it have pinch to zoom?

Android productivity apps are pretty crap. Gmail, Email… I’ve actually had to steer my company’s phone purchases from Android to iPhones…

Apple has iCloud, and you can use one of its email accounts if you’d like, but it’s not needed — or even all that common. You mostly sign into iCloud for app and media downloads as well as backup and contact/calendar/bookmark sync.
