Video: Overview of Verizon’s Galaxy Note 2 – Multi-window, All Those Logos, and More

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been one of the most anticipated devices to come to Verizon in some time. I would almost argue that a device hasn’t had this many DL readers excited since the Galaxy Nexus launched a year ago. Sure, we’ve seen the DNA and RAZR HD hit store shelves, but after Big Red passed on the original Note, this latest version was in the sights of many at an early stage.

With device in hand, we thought we’d do a quick tour of some of the differences between this version and the T-Mobile version that we reviewed a few weeks ago. Most notably is the multi-window feature that Samsung teased a while back, a feature that allows you to run two apps at the same time, adjust the screen areas taken up by each, and accomplish tasks much faster. There are also some cosmetic changes, including the branding of the home button (yikes). We cover it all in the  video below.

    Nice Post about Android overview

  • Davros

Hey, you can get Google wallet on the Note 2?

  • Brent Cooper

Is that Google Wallet on a Verizon device? Did Verizon allow it or did you side load it?

  • warren

no wifi home button nor does it carousel

  • Kurt Weber

    GOOGLE WALLET?!?

    • Brent Cooper

Thats what I just noticed. Have you heard anything about it?

  • Ethanater

Agreed. The Verizon branding on the home key is no biggie.

  • C-Law

Wtf! I love the wife toggle in the notification bar! Why would Verizon remove that! I hate Verizon so soooo much. I hope rom developers will be able to remove the notification and put the toggle back up there like it is on every other network

  • http://twitter.com/marctobolski Marc Tobolski

How come Droid Life finds it necessary to have their logo in a static bar on the top of every page? When you scroll it won’t go away! The Verizon branding is a petty complaint.

  • Leo

Since you hate it so much can you just give it to me when you are done reviewing it please? I’ll put it to good use and love it

  • feztheforeigner

I chose the DNA just because of that dreadful home button…

  • Jarrett Heintz

I’m far more pissed with the lack of S Planner and the removal of the Block options.

    • LionStone

Block options? As in ability to block calls?

  • disastrousrainbow

Hasn’t carrier information always been a standard thing on lock screens and/or the notification panel? It’s like, phone 101 that it’s going to tell you what carrier your on in the event you somehow manage to find yourself on another carrier other than your main one. That was probably the most useless bit of complaining in the entire video.

I will agree the back logo branding is hilariously bad though. Jumbo size and ridiculous, it almost screams to be replaced with the flip cover since that has almost no branding but Samsung’s. The home button is also a design disgrace if only because it detracts from the overall polished, smooth, and simple design Samsung reached their apex with on the Galaxy S3. It’s like taking the most beautiful, well-designed car and squeezing a logo from corner to corner on the hood. It just looks off.

Still, that’s nothing that can’t be fixed with a penny and patience or those stickers being sold on eBay. Also, for most of the people who come here things like the Wi-Fi toggle and all that BS shouldn’t really be an aggravating thing. I bet most of us will load up Clean Rom or something as soon as it’s available for it ,so whatever.

  • minnie

can you please confirm if indeed unlocked? can it at least use a TMO sim at 3g speeds?

  • Troy

I’m not at mad about the logos. Those can be covered, hidden, even replaced with different parts. What I can’t stand is the stupid wifi toggle. I don’t know why, but I just hate it, to the point where I would rather have a third logo somewhere on the phone instead.

Whatever, doesn’t matter, still picking the phone up tomorrow lol. Now I just have to decide whether I want it in white or grey, any thoughts?

  • moew

OK, this phone is growing on me. Coworker bought one, it’s awesome, checked it out in a VZW store, it’s awesome.

If you are talking on it, will you be `that guy`!!!!!!

Also, how is voice quality, I hope it’s leaps and bounds better than then VZW SGN!

My RAZR HD is within the extended return window of 1/15/2013… what say you all? Swap it out and get a huge awesome phone that can actually fit in my pocket?

    • FAL_Fan

      Yes

      • moew

Yes you will be `that guy`?

        • FAL_Fan

Yes, and I suggest you do the same. It’s funny though; when I was considering purchasing the original motorola razor I was told by the competitors that I would be “that guy” with the calculator sized phone on my ear…it’s funny how the size of the phone is really only perspective…Honestly though, trade it in if you can, you’ll receive a better screen and more innovative software enhancements. (Hard for me to say because I have always loved Motorola)

  • chris125

    How’s the radios and reception?

    • KSChris

      Great!

      • chris125

        Compared to?

        • Diablo81588

          The galaxy nexus… Lol

          • chris125

            hahhahahha

  • fadilkarim

wow!! when will tmobile get the multi view feature?!?!?1-___-

    • FAL_Fan

I called Samsung and they said “in the spring”. Was the guy telling me the truth? I don’t quite know but that’s what the representative said to me in regards to multi-window.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kirk-Ngo/1362282755 Kirk Ngo

Does the ATT version have it?

  • Rickerbilly

I received my device yesterday. I put a Cruzerlite case on it immediately that covers the back Vzw logo. The home button logo is subtle; it does NOT stand out to me. Kellex spent WAY too much time blabbing about it. Verizon has been branding their devices since day one, WHAT IS NEW? The device is great, beautiful display, ZERO lag, in fact very fast! S-pen is neat, but I bought it for the big display to be honest. I am running Apex launcher on it now and so far, I am really enjoying it. I charged it fully last night and as of right now I have 47% battery with 9h 40m 21s on battery with 3h 53m 28s Time on. Brightness has been at around 55% the whole time. Call quality is good, 4G data has been good. All around I really like it! Forget about the logo talk, it is so over blown.

    • scijohn

I agree. Mine was still at 30% after 13 hours of heavy use.

  • Rickerbilly

Get over it!! It is a sweet device.

  • sport

Can the note do HDMI out through a dongle in the USB slot? Anyone know??

    • Diablo81588

Pretty sure it’s MHL, so I’d say yes.

  • Gage

Really people how often do you look at the back of your phone? Who cares how many logos it has, as long as it’s a bad ass phone who cares. Most people have a case on their phone anyway so your not gonna see the logos on the back.

  • flosserelli

Nice review. Too bad Verizon will never update it. Ever.

  • Tim242

We got two Note 2’s in our house. Love them. Oddly, the Verizon version is missing YouTube and Gmail in multiwindow. Other carrier versions have them. I tried the DNA as well. It felt so antiquated. Sense needs to evolve, or die. The screen on the Note is better. With the saturation set to natural, I love it.

    • LionStone

aww buddy…it really sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself… Hope you get an update soon to fix TW so you get full function :)

  • Mark

I have no idea what all the fuss is over logo’s…. I guess when a phone this good comes out some people have to find something to complain about…. Companies want everyone to see their stuff. That’s why they spend so much money on advertising. If you don’t want the logos on there, take them off…. SIMPLE FIX

  • http://twitter.com/Dominick_7 Dominick S.

Verizon ticks me off.. no headphones, no unlimited data, now it seems there is also no wireless charging besides no wifi on off setting in the drop down… and they give us tiered data, a verizon logo on the home button and everywhere else it seems, bloat etc. When you brought up the multi window app it said edit on it, so I’m if you can add more apps like Chrome that way? Inspite of all of this if they let me keep my unlimited upgrading on another line then switching it I’m ok to get the Note 2 still. If not I guess I will have to wait to save up enough for full retail or just go to TMobile or something. Inspite of all of this, the Note 2 is amazing still though. Oh the video editor is made available via the Samsung app store btw. Looking forward to seeing how that works.

  • http://twitter.com/gorkon Joel McLaughlin

I have no problem with the brand on the button. Actually I like that….as you won’t hardly EVER see it.

    • discstu37

I got the cover so I’m fine. As per usual, it’s about the principle – no matter that VZW puts front logos on pretty much any phone these days aside from iPhone. And oh BTW, the logo is bigger on my smaller HD Maxx. So there’s that.

    • LionStone

Except when you go to push the iButton, which is only every day :)

  • Sam

am i the only one who could care less about the home button branding?

    • http://twitter.com/gorkon Joel McLaughlin

      No

    • Bigger Fish

I’m with ya man… When I get to the point that I have time to worry about something like that, my life will be pretty damn sweet…If it did bother me, either a magic marker or a dab of plasti-dip should take care of it.

    • Tim242

I couldn’t care less either. It is so small. I don’t even notice it.

      • michael arazan

People should care about the fact Verizon is trying to fork android it seems. Disabling the disable button for wifi in Jellybean, that is wrong! Did they disable the disable button for all the bloatware apps too or just wifi? People don’t need all the apps from bloatware always on or turning themselves on to send your locations and what other information the bloatware apps are sending back.
Split window only works for preloaded apps about 7 of them, not a whole heck of a lot of multitasking to be done with that, unless calendar, and browser and GMaps, and I didn’t see if Gmaps was in the list. Guess verizon only wants people multitasking bloatware only, so they can pay their vzw bill and watch their data cap.

        • Tim242

The multiwindow apps have nothing to do with Verizon. You can disable wifi. You can also disable 99.99999% of bloat.

    • Jarrett Heintz

Enough already with the branding! I get that it was excessive but it has been covered exhaustively. Everything you own is branded. If it hadn’t been pointed out to me, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. Let’s talk about something relevant.

    • http://www.facebook.com/brickjohnstone Tim Johnson

You are not the only one. I am happy with this phone and the LTE so branding doesn’t bother me.

  • http://profiles.google.com/davidukfl David Wanless

    needz moar logos

  • Jeff

I’ve heard you can’t wireless charge the note 2 from VZW…. What a damn shame!

    • LionStone

Yep, I agree…now that IS something that I’m going to use every day. I picked one up at VZW for $49.99 and it’s so nice to have it built in, while keeping the device so thin and light.

  • Kschris

I’m loving the phone. I can’t recall ever being as excited, or as satisfied with a device. It has more than lived up to my expectations. And the battery is great.. Looking at 65% right now at almost 5pm, unplugged at 6:30am, after moderate use all day using Tapatalk, flip board, Facebook, and netflix on LTE.

    • flosserelli

      Wow, that’s pretty impressive.

  • Kschris

The uproar over the home button logo is ridiculous. It’s really not any more of an eyesore than the Samsung (or whatever, for other devices) logo right above the screen. I have the white version, and it’s barely noticeable when using the phone, unless you’re looking directly at the it.

  • hfoster52

Did I see a google Wallet icon in the video??

    • Tim242

The Play Store allowed me to download it. Just have to try it to see if it works.

    • tomn1ce

Yes you did and I hope that vzw unleash it soon….or did they just happen to miss GWallet in the Gapps…..!

  • http://twitter.com/TurboNegro7791 Tyler Hills

Screw the branded logo why the heck did they kill off the WiFi toggle!?!?!? Please tell me there’s a mod being worked on to fix this…

    • CapnShiner

Don’t worry, I’m sure the dev community is on it

      • http://twitter.com/TurboNegro7791 Tyler Hills

I hope so. I worry that devs will start ditching Verizon devices altogether. And thanks to a family plan and horrible credit, Verizon is all I got. Although a prepaid N4 is sounding better every day :/

  • Nazzi_Muhammad

The audio on this video absolutely horrible….

  • S2556

my carrier does no branding and no bloat. I love it.
they charge an arm and a leg though :/

  • JB

    That sexy, sexy homebutton..

  • Ohiwastedmylife

What phone did you record this video with? I see the notification LED going off!

  • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I am looking into getting a new phone after christmas and I am absolutely stumped as to what device to get! I currently have the Droid Razr rooted and running JB on Verizon and would like to stay with Verizon just because I have unlimited data. I love the device but its just getting outdated and the battery life and camera DRIVE ME UP THE WALL (new phone needs to be able to last a normal day with moderate usage and be able to take moderately good pictures / videos)! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    • Kevin Mills

I recommend the Note2. I swapped out the DNA for it and could not be happier. Keep in mind I’m only 5’7″, and my tiny hands manage just fine. I text and check emails and such with one hand. (without the keyboard move over thing)

      • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

What was it about the DNA that made you want to trade it for the Note 2?

      • Diablo81588

You cannot reach the notification bar and use the keyboard without changing your grip. Its physically impossible, no matter how big your hands are.

        • FAL_Fan

Yes you can, and being that I’m not God, it’s obviously not physically impossible.

          • Diablo81588

You are wrong. I am 6 foot 4 with large hands and I don’t come close. It’s a two handed device, plain and simple.

          • FAL_Fan

No, I’m 6’2″ and I wear extra large gloves and I have had no problem.

          • Diablo81588

I’m glad it works for you, but for normal people with human sized hands it’s cumbersome to use one handed.

          • scijohn

I have to agree with FAL_Fan. I’m also 6’2″ and I have no problem using the keyboard and swiping the notifications bar without repositioning my hand. Naturally, it all depends on where your thumb is when you normally hold the phone.
That being said, I normally hold any smartphone regardless of size in my left hand and type with my right. It just feels more comfortable to type and swipe that way.

    • LionStone

Yesterday unplugged about 3a… gave me 19 hrs 4G the whole time… This morning I unplugged again about 3a, got up about 8a and been on it for about 2 hrs and I’m at 74%. The DNA has proven to me you don’t need a huge phablet and battery to make it through the day! And HTC cameras speak for themselves, you won’t be disappointed in that area. I’ll update with a pic, hope this helps.

    • LionStone

Here’s an unedited pic…if you look closely near the top, just left of center is an airplane.

  • John

Thx for ripping on Vzw for the stupid design choice with their logo placements.

  • Rick King

My VZW Note 2 would not accept a 64gb card nor would my wife’s. I had to downgrade to 32.

    • scijohn

Mine took the 64GB SD card. At first, I didn’t push it all the way in the slot until it clicked. Once I did that, all I had to do was choose “mount SD”.

      • Rick King

Maybe it was the specific card I used…maybe I’m not very good with technologies?

    • http://www.facebook.com/zapote21 Luis Reich

Mine did… I had it on the SGS3 and just transferred it.

  • trololol

Oooooh yea 2 at the same time

  • IanYarborough

Respectfully, the point is not how easy the logos are to remove or how little you see them, but what a trashy design decision they were in the first place. The logos are huge and ugly. It looks like a nascar. Gross.

    • scijohn

It is a far cry from Nascar logos. It’s more like buying a car and the dealership put their name on it. By the way, a blow dryer takes the dealership name off in a minute.

      • aye_winchell

its more like the dealership put there name on the back, and the front, and the headrests, and sun visors.

        • scijohn

And they are all removable. BFD

          • aye_winchell

look its not a “BFD” since i wont be buying this phone (not for any particular reason, especially not logos) but if enough people complain about the amount of logos maybe they will keep them paired down in the future, i dont mind the ones on the outside but the one on the noto bar and lockscreen i can do without, i dont want them showing up on a phone i want in the future. (and btw i was saying if the dealership had there logo embroidered on the headrests on sun visor, i dont mind manufacuturer branding just not non removable dealership branding.)

          • http://twitter.com/gorkon Joel McLaughlin

BAH….I could care less if they had a big giant VZW logo on the back or VZW wallpaper on it. I am more concerned with the SLOW AS HELL update process.

          • aye_winchell

true that. i have a razr maxx (non hd) i have big logos on the back and the front, they don’t bother me, way bigger then the home button, i jsut dont want them in the software, no one sees that but me, and believe me i know i’m a verizon customer.

          • scijohn

and this one certainly looks like it is removable.

Look, I’m not big into logos. For the life of me, I can’t understand why people wear baseball caps with the 59 fifty sticker still on it and all of the American Eagle, Hollister, Pink, The North Face, Under Armor, Beats logo junk but that’s what many people do even though the quality is no better than cheaper stuff.
I just think this tiny logo is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

    • CapnShiner

It may not be what we would call classy or tasteful but do you have any idea how popular/profitable NASCAR is?

      • aye_winchell

very, and i dont mind the NASCAR look, because that’s how they get paid, if Verizon wants to start paying me then ill advertise for them.

        • CapnShiner

I would gladly cover my phone in Verizon logos if they paid me for it or at least discounted my service for it. Actually, that gives me an idea. Many companies use referral incentives to gain new customers. Verizon should offer something like 10% off the monthly bill for each new line of service opened with you as a reference, 15% if they came from AT&T.

        • CapnShiner

Oh, I got another idea. Manufacturers like Samsung should offer a discount on their phones and tablets if you trade in an iPhone or iPad.

        • http://twitter.com/ThePhillipBee Phillip Bee

          ^^^^ EXACTLY !! +1000 to you !!

        • http://twitter.com/marctobolski Marc Tobolski

Didn’t they give you a $300 discount on the phone?

          • Nannuq

No. They just let you pay for it over the time of your contract there is no discount

          • http://twitter.com/marctobolski Marc Tobolski

Nope – retail it is $600 – Verizon sells ‘em for $300 under contract.

          • Nannuq

you nailed it “UNDER CONTRACT” and if you break that contract you have to pay an ETF and the phone is only discounted because you signed a contract the cost of the phone is factored into the monthly payments you make. This is the way the system works in America if you choose to pay full retail for it and then sign a contract you are an idiot because they will still charge you full subsidized pricing for it here in America and smile all the way to the bank. Either way you are paying just because one doesn’t want to see the truth doesn’t mean it still not the truth.
This is why the European model is better imho. Yes you pay full price but you get WAY cheaper phone plans in comparison. The American system ropes you in by thinking you are getting a $600 dollar device on the cheap when in fact you are paying more for it in the long run than a person in Europe would be for the same device and service plan.

          • Nannuq

your post infers they are “Doing us a favor” and we somehow owe them advertising space. when in fact they are not.

    • jldleo

Your screen name is Ian Yarborough. You actually might be related to one of Nascars most poplar driver from the 60’s-80’s Cale Yarborough..

  • discstu37

Can’t view the video at the moment. Is there a way to change which apps can be used in multi Window? Or just what’s loaded by default?

    • Trey Mitchell

      Loaded by default

      ;_;

      • discstu37

That’s what I thought. Disappointing, to say the least. Especially when other videos show other apps being used, presumably on other networks. Thanks for confirming.

        • Rick King

Samsung’s Facebook page shows YouTube and Google Maps being used with split screen but from what I’ve read, no carriers have either of these apps available on split screen. Not just VZW. I’m disappointed that even the native Gmail app doesnt work with this.

          • discstu37

Right, not even Chrome! How could native Google applications not even work? I mean I understand, but jeez…

        • FAL_Fan

I saw on XDA that there is a root method for the t-mobile version that allows you to use any app that you choose. This being the case there should probably be one on verizon soon enough.

          • discstu37

I dont remember – are other carriers running JB or ICS though? Because I don’t recall seeing a working JB root method out there (for locked devices)? Maybe I’m using too small of a sample size though as I’m only aware of the RAZR M being on VZW that’s been upgraded to JB outside of the Note 2 which came loaded…

  • Spoken Word™

I don’t spend a lot of time looking at the back of my phone so I only see 1 logo and it’s not as bad as I thought. It’s not like they don’t already put the logo on the front and rear of other phones.

    • FAL_Fan

Exactly! That is why I don’t understand why people are making such a big deal! Almost all the Verizon phones have Verizon logos on the front and back of the device. Yes, the GS3 doesn’t have the button branding but that was the lucky exception. I don’t know why Verizon cares to brand their devices as much as they do, especially considering this device is on every major network, because if we like the service enough we’ll tell people who our provider is. Regardless, this really isn’t the big deal that everyone is making it out to be. My big deal is the muti-window feature not allowing you to use all the apps in your arsenal, which should be corrected soon either by Samsung or our lovely developers.

  • scijohn

Chill out. You can remove the logo with your fingernail.

    • will bartlett

do you have the phone? the logo it etched into the damn home button

      • Trey Mitchell

I was under the impression it was paint

        • scijohn

          and you are correct

        • will bartlett

it is not. that dude does not know what he is talking about

      • scijohn

Yes I have it and it’s not etched in. It’s raised. (silk screen)

        • will bartlett

it is not raised. you must not have the phone. my fingernail goes IN TO the logo.

          • scijohn

I’n not scratching it off just to prove my point but it is raised silk screen.

          • will bartlett

            lol you are completely wrong.

          • scijohn

Here’s a magnified picture of part of the logo. Notice the raised edges and the shadow it casts. Who’s wrong?

          • will bartlett

Mine is different. It is engraved. Im looking right at it.

          • scijohn

            Yeah. OK.

          • will bartlett

run your fingernail over it and tell me it is not sunken in the button. if you tell me that it is raised over it you are a moron.

          • scijohn

It is raised. I just looked at it under a magnifying glass. It casts a shadow.

          • discstu37

After further review, I think the white/grey is painted on and the Verizon is etched into that paint. I think you can scratch off the color AROUND the verizon logo; how it would look once all the paint is scratched off is anyone’s guess. And since I bought this off contract, I am NOT going to be a guniea pig – especially when i bought the flap cover anyway ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Travis-Erickson/563313398 Travis Erickson

I may have screamed a bit when kellen flipped it over
