Sure maybe there’s room there but I like them just where they are. I don’t like how the buttons on Galaxy phones are at the very edge of the bottom. The Nexus layout it perfect for me, just enough bezel to hang onto in landscape.

Why do you like the on screen buttons so much? They shrink your screen from 4.7″ to 4.3″. There is still a chin. Just seems pointless.

after having a galaxy nexus, I never want another phone without onscreen buttons. But I gotta say I don’t like that the background isn’t solid black on the razr.

Agreed 100%. When a manufacturer releases a phone that has a bottom bezel that’s too small for physical navigation buttons, I’ll love on-screen buttons. But until that happens, give me physical buttons and full use of the screen real estate for everything (and not just for videos).

But the likelihood of bottom bezels becoming that small in the near future is probably slim to none. The space is needed to house the internal components, particularly with the thinness of most current phones. That’s why phones with on-screen buttons still have a large bezel or chin. So if the space has to be a part of the phone anyway, put some buttons there and allow the entire screen to be used.

The menu button is no longer used, so that point is moot. The back button gets rid of the keyboard, without having to change to down. I only use a custom ROM to shrink my buttons off of my display. A stock Nexus display is 4.3″ instead of 4.7, because of useless onscreen buttons. And still, the Gnex has the most bezel of any Android phone.

On screen buttons are malleable. They serve to communicate and change as you need them. If an app doesn’t have a menu button, it won’t be there. Instead of me pressing my menu button multiple times trying to figure out if something will happen, I will know not to. Want to get rid of the keyboard? The back button turns into a down arrow letting you know that you’ll be backing out of the keyboard first. Don’t even get me started on custom roms.

I like the shape of the Moto themed keys, but I don’t like how the arrow key doesn’t change orientation when the keyboard is up. I know it’s a minute detail, but it’s something I got used to.

I literally did the exact same thing yesterday. While I’m not 100% sold on the RAZR yet, it’s definitely an improvement from the GNex.
